13 best sugar alternatives
Sugar alternatives, also known as sugar substitutes or sweeteners, are products used as alternatives to traditional sugar for adding sweetness to foods and beverages. These alternatives are often sought after for various reasons, including managing blood sugar levels, reducing calorie intake, and catering to dietary restrictions. Here are some common sugar alternatives:
Artificial Sweeteners:
- Aspartame: A low-calorie sweetener commonly found in sugar-free beverages and sugar-free gum.
- Sucralose: A calorie-free sweetener often used in sugar-free products, including baked goods and beverages.
- Saccharin: One of the oldest artificial sweeteners, used in a variety of sugar-free products.
Natural Sweeteners:
- Stevia: Extracted from the leaves of the Stevia plant, stevia is a calorie-free sweetener that is significantly sweeter than sugar. It is often used in sugar-free beverages and as a tabletop sweetener.
- Monk Fruit Extract: Derived from the monk fruit, this sweetener is calorie-free and is sometimes combined with other natural sweeteners to improve taste.
- Erythritol: A sugar alcohol that provides sweetness with fewer calories than sugar. It's commonly used in sugar-free and low-calorie foods.
Sugar Alcohols:
- Xylitol: A sugar alcohol found in many sugar-free gum and mints. It has a similar sweetness to sugar but with fewer calories and a lower impact on blood sugar levels.
- Maltitol: Another sugar alcohol used as a sugar substitute in various sugar-free products, including candies and baked goods.
Agave Nectar: A natural sweetener derived from the agave plant. It is often used as a syrup or liquid sweetener in baking and beverages.
Maple Syrup: While not a sugar substitute in the strictest sense, pure maple syrup is used as a natural sweetener in many recipes, especially in baking and breakfast dishes. It has a distinct flavor and is less processed than refined sugar.
Honey: Like maple syrup, honey is a natural sweetener used in cooking, baking, and as a topping for various dishes. It has a unique flavor profile and may offer potential health benefits when consumed in moderation.
Coconut Sugar: Made from the sap of coconut palm trees, coconut sugar is a natural sweetener with a caramel-like flavor. It is often used as a replacement for brown sugar in recipes.
Molasses: Molasses is a byproduct of sugar refining and is sometimes used as a sweetener in baked goods and marinades due to its rich, robust flavor.
It's important to note that the choice of a sugar alternative depends on individual preferences, dietary requirements, and intended culinary applications. Some people may prefer the taste of certain sugar alternatives over others, and some may have specific dietary needs, such as low-carb or low-calorie diets, that influence their choice of sweeteners. When using sugar alternatives in recipes, it may be necessary to adjust the quantity to achieve the desired level of sweetness, as different sweeteners have varying levels of sweetness compared to sugar.
Below you can find our editor's choice of the best sugar alternatives on the market- Contains zero net carbs, zero calories, and is zero-glycemic. Perfect for cookies, coffee, desserts, and other sweet, sugar-free treats.
- Matches the Sweetness of Sugar: A healthy cup-for-cup alternative to ordinary sugar.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the ratio of this sweetener to regular sugar for baking? Is it 1 to |
Answer: | No you’ll need to add extra. If it calls for one cup sugar you will use 1 1/3 cup Erythritol. It’s what I use to sweeten all my baked goods and I love it! |
Question: | what is the bag made of, does it contribute anything bad to the product? thanks |
Answer: | Love the product. Packaging does not contribute smell or taste to the product. |
Question: | This product is listed as 100% erythritol, but several questions answered by other buyers said it is a mixture of sugar/stevia. Which is it |
Answer: | Whole Earth makes some different products. This one that is showing is 100% Erythritol, but they make another one called Baking Blend that is sugar/stevia. |
Question: | In what country is this product made |
Answer: | USA??? How do you know? In fact -- counry of origin is far from clear. Company's FAQ on this product says only: Whole Earth Erythritol is manufactured for Whole Earth Sweetener Company, LLC. http://wholeearthsweetener.com/faqs/#collapse-3035 Don't recall seeing any statement of origin on the product's packaging, last I checked. Nor will you see Made in USA in any of the product images here. Suppose, then, that Whole Earth Sweetener Co is purchasing all of their erythritol from a US company. That doesn't necessarily say anything about product origin. The erythritol could be made elsewhere, shipped here in bulk, and repackaged in the US. Whole Earth Sweetener Co may or may not be aware of this. That issue imo goes squarely to business practices. It's the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and not the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that governs Made in USA labelling. Foods and sweeteners have no source-of-origin labelling requirements: U.S. content must be disclosed on automobiles and textile, wool, and fur products. There’s no law that requires most other products sold in the U.S. to be marked or labeled Made in USA or have any other disclosure about their amount of U.S. content. However, manufacturers and marketers who choose to make claims about the amount of U.S. content in their products must comply with the FTC’s Made in USA policy. https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-made-usa-standard As Whole Earth Sweetener Co does not publicly disclose the maker of their erythritol, consumers are -- purposefully to my mind -- left in the dark on this. One quick swipe with Occam's razor: Were this erythritol made in the USA, then why wouldn't Whole Earth Sweetener Co clearly say so -- both on their packaging and in their published FAQ? By keeping mum publicly, Whole Earth Sweetener Co is certainly staying on the right side of applicable FTC rules. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it a usa product? whre is made |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Does this product contain fructose |
Answer: | It’s a cork - the product is amazing |
Question: | Is this zero-glycemic |
Answer: | 7%. Great flavor and makes perfect vinaigrettes. As potent as Sherry vinegar but richer flavor. |
Question: | Is this non-gmo |
Answer: | According to its British/EU labeling, this vinegar "Contains sulphites." This indicates that the product has over 10 mg of sulfites per liter, or about one one-millionth of one percent. Note that all wine contains sulfites naturally; the red wine this vinegar is made from starts out with a lower concentration of sulfites than most other wines. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this unrefined coconut sugar |
Answer: | I don't know the exact weight. It is light which is my reason for choosing it. I prefer to feel cool rather than hot at night. It is quite perfect. |
Question: | so when baking do you use this for white sugar or brown sugar |
Answer: | Cool. That is why I made the purchase. It is just perfect. |
Question: | Has anyone used this for making sweet iced tea |
Answer: | 5.5" G.Liane Glass Nail File is the most popular currently . We are going to launch the larger size (longer than 5.5") and smaller size ,and also large glass foot file . |
Question: | is this a good substitue for brown sugar |
Answer: | I’ve had several glass files, all seem to be coarser towards handle but I believe that’s by design. If you have a stubborn nail or maybe be thumb nails a bit coarser is better in my opinion. I am very happy with G.Liane’s file. I have bought 3 in case it gets discontinued. The quality is good and the container is really substantial. Less likely to drop and break as has happened with others I’ve had. |

- GUILT-FREE COOKING AND BAKING - Retains delicious flavor at high temps and even caramelizes like brown sugar without the "cooling" after-taste
User questions & answers
Question: | Does it has a cooling aftertaste |
Answer: | This is almost pure erythritol, about 99%. Erythritol is about 70% as sweet as sugar. They add enough Monk Fruit to make it as sweet as sugar. Being 99% erythritol by weight would not be deceptive because Monk Fruit is 150 to 200 times as sweet as sugar. What is deceptive is that only 30% of the sweetness comes from Monk Fruit. Thus it should be call Erythritol enhanced with Monk Fruit, rather than Monk Fruit sweetener. Having stated this, other than potential digestive problems resulting from erythritol not being digestible, there is nothing wrong with a sweetener being 70% erythritol and 30% Monk Fruit by sweetness, except calling it Monk Fruit sweetener. If you want a granulated Monk Fruit sweetener with a higher percentage of Monk Fruit, you will have to look for one that is not a one for one replacement for sugar, or uses a less sweet base than erytritol. |
Question: | How many carbs in 1 tablespoon |
Answer: | Lakanto isn't truely a "Monkfruit Sweetner", except as a marketing gimmick. It is basically the same thing as Truvia, except that it is substituting in a bit of monk fruit instead of stevia to increase the sweetness so that it is more like using sugar in proportion. This is made even more obvious by their marketing it as a 1:1 substitute for sugar, while distracting people with the (erroneous) note that actual monk fruit is 300x the sweetness of sugar. It would be more honest to market their product as an "Erythritol sweetner" with monk fruit extract, but that's not as marketable. |
Question: | It has malt extract as one of the ingredients. Malt extract is made from barley or rye. That is not gluten free. How can you claim it to be glutenfree |
Answer: | Only if you are a warm natured person. Otherwise, you may need another blanket. |
Question: | Are these calories fully digested or do they pass undigested |
Answer: | That is the same size as mine and it works well |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the monk fruit and erythritol non gmo |
Answer: | Taste was fine, but made the tea cloudy looking. |
Question: | This is a question for the manufacturer. Is this made in a facility that also handles wheat or gluten |
Answer: | Yes it is. I love this Product. |
Question: | What is the country of origin? Is any of it sourced from China |
Answer: | The carbs are listed as 4g, which is the "sugar alcohols", which is the erythritol. However, NET-carbs of erythritol are zero (hence, it's also called "Zerose"), since it is excreted before it can enter the blood stream. |
Question: | the monkfruit/erythritol i use now doesn't dissolve well and leaves a gritty layer on the bottom of my finished product. does your product do this |
Answer: | I've found no difference in the taste between the golden and classic. For me they are both equally good replacement for sugar. When I use the golden for baking, the color comes out a little darker than if I use the classic. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference |
Answer: | Hello, Pyure Organic Stevia All-Purpose Blend is our most versatile product. It can be used for all applications from cooking, baking, sprinkling on cereal or sweetening coffees and teas. It is organic, non-gmo and has the same taste and feel as sugar. Pyure All-Purpose is also a 2:1 ratio, so for every cup of sugar you can replace with 1/2 cup of All-Purpose Blend. This product blends organic erythritol and organic stevia together which are both excellent options for those with sugar sensitivities/diabetics. Pyure All-Purpose also comes in a few sizes: 16 ounce Pouch, 10 ounce flip-top tub, 80ct and 1000ct sachets. Pyure Bakeable Blend on the other hand is currently not organic or non-gmo, however we are working towards having it being organic and non-gmo this year. This product is more of a sugar-reducer since we recommend that for every cup of sugar, you replace half with the bakeable blend. For example if your recipe requires 1 cup of sugar you use 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of the bakeable blend. This is to ensure for proper crispness and browning. The Bakeable Blend can also be used in a 1:1 ratio if you do not want to use sugar. Pyure Bakeable Blend is a blend of maltodextrin and organic stevia, and comes in a 10 ounce pouch. I hope that helps. Thanks for the question W. Swanton. |
Question: | item shown for $17 .86, is it 16oz. package |
Answer: | Yes, the item you are referring is one 16oz. package. However, I purchase the 2-pack offering (2 ea. 16 oz. packages) for around $25.00. |
Question: | Why is this misleadingly presented item not returnable when it contains hardly anything but erythritol and only trivial traces of stevia extract |
Answer: | Pure stevia is a powder that is super sweet and almost unusable. It is mixed with other sweeteners like erythritol as a carrying agent. I also have a small bottle of the pure powder. It comes with a 25mg scoop. 25mg is a really small amount. I use about 1/3 of the scoop to sweeten a mug of coffee. Any more than that and my coffee is too sweet. This doesn't sound so bad but just try and get that tiny bit of powder in the sccop. The powder is so fine that it clings together, coats the handle of the scoop, and as you tap the scoop against the side of your mug the powder on the scoop handle falls into your coffee also. Like I said the pure powder is not really a usable form of this item and it works much better when it is mixed with something that can be granulated. Don't let the ratios fool you. |
Question: | what is the ratio of erythritol and stevia |
Answer: | I include this comment by seller " ...lthough erythritol is the first ingredient by weight, stevia accounts for over 90% of the sweetness. Pyure Stevia Extract is roughly 350x sweeter than sugar, while erythritol is 70% as sweet as sugar. The reason that this blend is less concentrated is because this erythritol-stevia blend offers the bulk/volume that the 1 cup of sugar in your recipe would have required, without losing mass in your cakes or cookies. Erythritol is a non-nutritive carrying agent that the stevia is able to attach itself to, creating a sweetener that is easy to use, versatile and safe for those with sugar sensitivities. . . User questions & answers
Question: | Is there an after taste |
Answer: | No, there is not. |
Question: | Why does this also contain acesulfame potassium, another artificial sweetener |
Answer: | It also contains 2 kinds of sugar (dextrose & maltodextrin corn sugar) both raise insulin and blood glucose. Sweet n le added it too unless you can find the liquid. |
Question: | Is there an after taste |
Answer: | I never experienced after taste but I've been using sweeteners for over 15 years. |
Question: | Does anyone know exactly how many carbohydrate grams per packet? "Less than one" isn't specific enough for me; I'm a diabetic |
Answer: | Aspartame is 4 Calories per gram, same as sugar. A teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams, or 16 calories. But aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar, so to get the sweetening of one teaspoon, you'd need 16/200 calories worth = 0.08 calories. Aspartame is metabolized like its components, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, both of which are amino acids. Your body will do with it what it does with proteins, which are made up of amino acids. User questions & answers
Question: | What is the source of the erythritol in the anthony's erythritol & monk fruit powder - corn or cane sugar |
Answer: | Hello. We don't claim the product to be gluten free in the US as the presence of malt extract is not allowed in a gluten free product. The gluten contents in Sukrin Gold is significantly below the threshold for gluten free products (close to 1 ppm) and the product is therefore legally considered gluten free in the EU, which is where the product originates. The US packaging does not make a claim for gluten free - but if you were to purchase the product from a UK seller, it might have a gluten free claim. |
Question: | What exactly is "caramel"? (...listed ingredient in the Golden variety |
Answer: | The main ingredient is erythritol, which although it is technically "absorbed" in your upper GI, your body however can not processes/burn it, and so it is excreted/expelled by your kidneys. Because it is absorbed into your body and doesn't stay in your colon, unlike some other non-calorie polyol sweeteners (like xylitol), it is very unlikely that this would any gastric disturbances (diarrhea). Sweetener of choice for most low carb / ketogenic dieters. The 2nd main ingredient is "tagatose", of which about 20% is absorbed, and the rest passes to the large intestine where it is mostly fermented (metabolized) by beneficial intestinal bacteria into short chain fatty acids (SCFA), which are absorbed. In the human liver, that 20% of absorbed tagatose, is metabolized the same way as fructose - it is converted to glucose, which can be then either stored in the form of glycogen or broken down to produce energy. Because 80% gets to your lower intestines, it may cause gastric upset (diarrhea) Not good for low carb / ketogenic dieters. The 3rd ingredient is glycerol, which is chemically considered a sugar alcohol (polyol). There is some conjecture as to what glycerol (AKA glycerin/glycerine) actually is (a carbohydrate, or a fatty acid). It is usually part of a fatty acid chain, but when it stands alone it is a carbohydrate. The FDA treats it as a carbohydrate. From what I've read (anecdotal reports) it only gets absorbed if your liver stores if glycogen stores are empty (i.e. you are fat adapted). Like tagagose, it is probably not good to ingest when on a ketogenic diet.Next ingredient is Stevia. A natural high intensity sweetener. Probably not absorbed, but amounts used are so little it shouldn't matter. This is a zero glycemic index sweetener,a very good sweetener for ketogenic dieters. |
Question: | it's advertised as zero net carbs. the carb count on nutrition facts says 4g |
Answer: | It is right in the description as unrefined. It is good stuff. Description Unlike white sugar, BetterBody Foods Organic Coconut Sugar is unrefined. This means it retains the nutritional elements (minerals and B vitamins) that are frequently destroyed during the refinement process. |
Question: | Can you use this in place of brown sugar for baking keto recipe's |
Answer: | I use this for all my sugar needs. I love that I can use half of the called for amount and it's still as sweet and that it doesn't spike my blood sugar level. I use it in all my recipes, whether it calls for white or brown sugar. I even whirled it in my spice mill and made some powdered sugar out of it. It works well and doesn't "taste like coconut" to me. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this different from generic Erythitol |
Answer: | This is a subjective issue. Everyone's taste sense is different. I have some monkfruit confectioners sugar that has a slight "cooling taste" but I don't mind it. I detect NO cooling taste in this brown sugar product. I think it's great. My favorite use is in a good Irish coffee with Jameson's. |
Question: | Does this have a cooling taste/feeling like Swerve Confectioner’s Sugar |
Answer: | Sukrin Gold has 0 g net carbs as it is erythritol, a sugar alcohol that is not digested. 1 serving is 1 tsp (5 g) and has 5 g total carbs of which 5 g are indigestible (=0 g carbs). Best, Sukrin USA |

MADHAVA Organic Coconut Sugar is sourced directly from two non GMO and organic co-ops in Central Java with farmers who share our values of doing good for people and the earth. Each co-op consists of hundreds of small family farms where the skills to harvest and cook the sap are passed down through generations. When MADHAVA started making honey in 1973, we were shocked that food companies tinker and toil with synthetic formulas, trying to re-create authentic flavors. We knew there was a better way. So, we ventured into deserts in Mexico, climbed trees in California, and sapped flowers in Asia – in an obsessive pursuit of purity. As our company has evolved since 1973, so has our passion for purity in all foods. It’s now our mission to get clean ingredients to tables across the country – and the world. In our pursuit of purity, we’ve partnered with the Clean Label Project to double and triple check that our MADHAVA methods prevent environmental and industrial contaminants from getting in, resulting in natural, organic, rich flavors you can trust. Every MADHAVA product is Clean Label Project certified and continuously tested for hundreds of toxins and contaminants.
- ORGANIC COCONUT SUGAR—TASTE THE DIFFERENCE: Scoop or sprinkle some of our delicious organic coconut sugar with this pack of 1, 48-ounce bag of MADHAVA Organic Coconut Sugar
- INDEPENDENTLY AWARDED FOR PURITY: Continuously tested by The Clean Label Project to verify we are a leading coconut sugar brand avoiding more than 200 contaminants including heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury), pesticides and insecticides (including glyphosate)
- AUTHENTIC COCONUT SUGAR: Harvested on multi-generation family farms in Indonesia
- SUSTAINABLY HARVESTED: Our organic coconut sugar is harvested from coconut palm trees in partnership with local organic and non GMO farmers who share our values of doing good for people and the earth
- CLEAN & SIMPLE: Our organic coconut sugar is USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Kosher, gluten-free and vegan, and is packed in BPA free packaging
- 1:1 REPLACEMENT FOR OTHER TYPES OF GRANULATED SUGAR: Our coconut sugar is a natural sweetener, use it as a sugar alternative—no recipe changes needed
- UNREFINED MULTI-USE NATURAL SWEETENER: Replace refined white sugar, brown sugar and ‘raw’ sugars in all recipes and beverages (including tea and coffee) with pure and unrefined organic coconut sugar from MADHAVA
- PASSION FOR PURITY: MADHAVA started making honey in 1973 and although honey will always be our first love, we’ve made room for other clean and simple organic food like agave nectar, coconut sugar, extra virgin olive oil and culinary vinegars

Meet our Founder, Tara
Hey! I'm Tara, CEO & Founder of SmartSweets.
I started SmartSweets after my love affair with candy turned into an unhealthy relationship with food, and I experienced the negative effects excess sugar has on our health. I tried to eat less sugar, but that only led me to crave candy even more, sparking my quest to kick sugar, and keep candy. After spending months recipe testing in my kitchen with a gummy bear mould from Amazon, I innovated the first delicious candy - without all the sugar.
I can't wait for you to try SmartSweets, and join us on the mission to kick sugar.
