13 best diabetic sugar substitutes
Diabetic sugar substitutes, also known as artificial sweeteners or sugar alternatives, are products used by individuals with diabetes to add sweetness to their foods and beverages without significantly affecting blood sugar levels. These sugar substitutes are designed to provide a sweet taste without the high carbohydrate content found in regular sugar. Here are some common diabetic sugar substitutes:
Stevia: Stevia is a natural sweetener extracted from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. It is calorie-free and does not raise blood sugar levels. Stevia is available in various forms, including liquid drops and granulated powder.
Sucralose (Splenda): Sucralose is an artificial sweetener that is heat-stable, making it suitable for cooking and baking. It does not affect blood sugar levels and is often used as a sugar substitute in many products.
Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet): Aspartame is a low-calorie artificial sweetener commonly used in diet sodas and sugar-free products. It should be avoided by individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic disorder.
Saccharin (Sweet'N Low): Saccharin is one of the oldest artificial sweeteners. It is heat-stable and calorie-free. It's often used in tabletop sweeteners.
Monk Fruit Extract: Monk fruit extract is derived from the monk fruit, a small, green gourd native to Southeast Asia. It is naturally sweet and does not impact blood sugar levels.
Erythritol: Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that provides sweetness with fewer calories than sugar. It has minimal effects on blood sugar and is often used in sugar-free gum and candies.
Xylitol: Xylitol is another sugar alcohol that can be used as a sugar substitute. It has a similar sweetness to sugar and a minimal impact on blood sugar levels.Xylitol is often found in sugar-free gum and oral care products.
When using diabetic sugar substitutes, it's important to consider individual preferences and dietary needs. Some people may find that certain sweeteners have an aftertaste or affect their digestive system differently. Additionally, sugar substitutes are often used in combination with each other or with small amounts of sugar to achieve the desired sweetness.
It's crucial for individuals with diabetes to monitor their blood sugar levels and consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian to determine the best sugar substitute options for their specific dietary plan. While these sugar substitutes can be helpful in managing blood sugar, it's important to use them in moderation as part of an overall balanced diet and lifestyle.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there an after taste |
Answer: | No, there is not. |
Question: | Why does this also contain acesulfame potassium, another artificial sweetener |
Answer: | It also contains 2 kinds of sugar (dextrose & maltodextrin corn sugar) both raise insulin and blood glucose. Sweet n le added it too unless you can find the liquid. |
Question: | Is there an after taste |
Answer: | I never experienced after taste but I've been using sweeteners for over 15 years. |
Question: | Does anyone know exactly how many carbohydrate grams per packet? "Less than one" isn't specific enough for me; I'm a diabetic |
Answer: | Aspartame is 4 Calories per gram, same as sugar. A teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams, or 16 calories. But aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar, so to get the sweetening of one teaspoon, you'd need 16/200 calories worth = 0.08 calories. Aspartame is metabolized like its components, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, both of which are amino acids. Your body will do with it what it does with proteins, which are made up of amino acids. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product contain any carbs? Thank you |
Answer: | The carbs are listed as 4g, which is the "sugar alcohols", which is the erythritol. However, NET-carbs of erythritol are zero (hence, it's also called "Zerose"), since it is excreted before it can enter the blood stream. |
Question: | What is the difference, if any, between the Lakanto Golden Sweetener and the Lakanto White Sweetener |
Answer: | I've found no difference in the taste between the golden and classic. For me they are both equally good replacement for sugar. When I use the golden for baking, the color comes out a little darker than if I use the classic. |
Question: | What is the percentage by volume of erythritol and what percentage is Luo Han Guo |
Answer: | This is almost pure erythritol, about 99%. Erythritol is about 70% as sweet as sugar. They add enough Monk Fruit to make it as sweet as sugar. Being 99% erythritol by weight would not be deceptive because Monk Fruit is 150 to 200 times as sweet as sugar. What is deceptive is that only 30% of the sweetness comes from Monk Fruit. Thus it should be call Erythritol enhanced with Monk Fruit, rather than Monk Fruit sweetener. Having stated this, other than potential digestive problems resulting from erythritol not being digestible, there is nothing wrong with a sweetener being 70% erythritol and 30% Monk Fruit by sweetness, except calling it Monk Fruit sweetener. If you want a granulated Monk Fruit sweetener with a higher percentage of Monk Fruit, you will have to look for one that is not a one for one replacement for sugar, or uses a less sweet base than erytritol. |
Question: | What are all the ingredients listed for this product |
Answer: | Lakanto isn't truely a "Monkfruit Sweetner", except as a marketing gimmick. It is basically the same thing as Truvia, except that it is substituting in a bit of monk fruit instead of stevia to increase the sweetness so that it is more like using sugar in proportion. This is made even more obvious by their marketing it as a 1:1 substitute for sugar, while distracting people with the (erroneous) note that actual monk fruit is 300x the sweetness of sugar. It would be more honest to market their product as an "Erythritol sweetner" with monk fruit extract, but that's not as marketable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why did my packets come without the box? They just arrived loosely in a random postal box |
Answer: | Mine didn't come in a box like what is pictured but came in a white corrugated postal box but had stevia in the raw stamped all over it. Didn't matter to me how it came, I just wanted the packets. Wasn't worried about what type of container it came in. |
Question: | Are these 2g or 3g |
Answer: | Each packet is 1g. Hope this helps! |
Question: | It say |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | What are the fillers |
Answer: | Dextrose, which is another name for glucose, a simple sugar. There's literally more sugar in this zero calorie sweetener than there is stevia, but since each packet is only a gram, the added sugar is less than 2.5 calories, so they can round it to 0 on the nutrition facts. Pure stevia is very sweet so something has to be added to it in order to swap 1 to 1 with sugar. Because they used dextrose, this is basically just a slightly sweeter sugar packet that slips in just under the FDA rules to allow them to label it as zero calories. If you're looking for something with a lower glycemic index, try sucrose, a.k.a table sugar. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the ratio of this sweetener to regular sugar for baking? Is it 1 to |
Answer: | No you’ll need to add extra. If it calls for one cup sugar you will use 1 1/3 cup Erythritol. It’s what I use to sweeten all my baked goods and I love it! |
Question: | what is the bag made of, does it contribute anything bad to the product? thanks |
Answer: | Love the product. Packaging does not contribute smell or taste to the product. |
Question: | This product is listed as 100% erythritol, but several questions answered by other buyers said it is a mixture of sugar/stevia. Which is it |
Answer: | Whole Earth makes some different products. This one that is showing is 100% Erythritol, but they make another one called Baking Blend that is sugar/stevia. |
Question: | In what country is this product made |
Answer: | USA??? How do you know? In fact -- counry of origin is far from clear. Company's FAQ on this product says only: Whole Earth Erythritol is manufactured for Whole Earth Sweetener Company, LLC. http://wholeearthsweetener.com/faqs/#collapse-3035 Don't recall seeing any statement of origin on the product's packaging, last I checked. Nor will you see Made in USA in any of the product images here. Suppose, then, that Whole Earth Sweetener Co is purchasing all of their erythritol from a US company. That doesn't necessarily say anything about product origin. The erythritol could be made elsewhere, shipped here in bulk, and repackaged in the US. Whole Earth Sweetener Co may or may not be aware of this. That issue imo goes squarely to business practices. It's the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and not the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that governs Made in USA labelling. Foods and sweeteners have no source-of-origin labelling requirements: U.S. content must be disclosed on automobiles and textile, wool, and fur products. There’s no law that requires most other products sold in the U.S. to be marked or labeled Made in USA or have any other disclosure about their amount of U.S. content. However, manufacturers and marketers who choose to make claims about the amount of U.S. content in their products must comply with the FTC’s Made in USA policy. https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-made-usa-standard As Whole Earth Sweetener Co does not publicly disclose the maker of their erythritol, consumers are -- purposefully to my mind -- left in the dark on this. One quick swipe with Occam's razor: Were this erythritol made in the USA, then why wouldn't Whole Earth Sweetener Co clearly say so -- both on their packaging and in their published FAQ? By keeping mum publicly, Whole Earth Sweetener Co is certainly staying on the right side of applicable FTC rules. |

User questions & answers
Question: | where can I get a sample of this? I don't want tob spend money on something I might discard |
Answer: | Nice try...Nothing for free in this world. Suggest buying the smallest amount to "sample." Basically, as someone who has used only this as my sweetner of choice for the past year, it adds a nice subtle (depending on how much you use) sweetness to recipes and drinks, just like sugar without the gluc spike. Recomnend getting the fine powder over the granulated though, for more uses. |
Question: | It does taste great! But it isn't carb free, it's the same as sugar 1tsp = 4 carbs. Why buy this expensive product |
Answer: | half the sugar alcohols are subtracted from the carbs. A serving of this is 4g carbs & Erythritol (sugar alcohol) are also 4g. So there are only 2 carbs per serving. This makes a huge difference in the long term. I put 2 tsps of sugar in my coffee, that's 8g carbs just in the coffee, now its only 4. Baking.. huge difference. And any fiber you add to your recipe, is 1:1 subtraction from carbs. |
Question: | Is this as good as the Swerve brand |
Answer: | I used Swerve and enjoyed using it as a sugar substitute. Since I do a lot of cooking (Keto) I decided to look for something that was as good as Swerve but more inepensive and in a larger quantity. The Erythritol (3 lb package) is a great value and tastes the same. In my opinion it's as good as Swerve. |
Question: | Is this made from corn??? Please don’t answer “it’s made from a plant”. I specifically want to know if it’s coming from corn... thank you |
Answer: | The seller answered saying it is made from non-GMO corn and the packaged claims it is made in USA. But non-GMO corn is not grown in the U.S. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this returnable |
Answer: | If the pkg isn't opened |
Question: | How many cups is this package equivalent to |
Answer: | According to the package, 1.63 lbs. of Splenda equals 13.5 lbs. of sugar. 13.5 lbs. of sugar equals 27 cups according to a google search. |
Question: | At the supoerstores, a bag of splenda , the large size, equals about 5 pounds sugar. About how much does this size equal |
Answer: | Splenda comes in different presentations, individual Sachettes, tablets, granulated and 50/50. In the case of granulated Splenda bags, they indicate on their label the weight of the contents of the bag and its equivalent to the weight in conventional sugar. For example, a 1.2 Lbs. Splenda bag. Equals or sweeten as 10 Lbs. Of conventional sugar. The purpose of which they made it granulated is for facilitate the measuring process in recipes, so, a cup of granulated Splenda is equal to 1 cup of conventional sugar. |
Question: | Is there really some kind of fat in it or not if not I'll try it out |
Answer: | No fat but it’s 96 Calories per Cup and has 24 g Carbohydrates Per Cup. Hard to believe because they advertise “No Calorie Sweetener”. Misleading and sleazy but surprisingly legal because the rule is if a serving (Splenda uses 1 Teaspoon) is less than 5 calories then it’s okay to advertise 0 calories. I didn’t believe it either, check the facts. |

Question: | Can this be used as a brown sugar alternative or does this come in a brown sugar variety |
Answer: | It won't have the brown sugar flavor. It tastes exactly as white sugar. As far as I know it doesn't come in the brown sugar flavor. Try Sukrin Gold or Swerve Brown. |
Question: | Is this a sugar alcohol |
Answer: | Its a pentose which has a different molecular structure than xylitol or erythritol but is included in the sugar alchohol catagory. |
Question: | Does this cause a cooling effect like xylitol, erythitol or monkfruit sweetener blend |
Answer: | I have sensed the cooling in other alternative sugars, but DID NOT notice it in my sweets made with Bocha. This is made from the Kabocha squash. I guess it is an individual thing - but I was glad I tried Bocha - I liked it better than other alternatives. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have any "after taste" like some do? Thanks |
Answer: | Nope. No after taste like Stevia :) I love this brand of erythritol |
Question: | what is erythritol made from |
Answer: | Erythritol is: Fermented – it is made by fermenting the natural sugar found in corn. Heat stable up to 160 degrees C. Non-caloric – While most sugar alcohols are low calorie, erythritol has zero calories. Non-glycemic - Does not raise blood sugar – erythritol is considered suitable for people with diabetes because it does not raise plasma glucose or insulin levels. The easiest sugar alcohol to digest – more than 90% of erythritol is absorbed in the small intestine, so minimal amounts reach the colon where other sugar alcohols end up causing diarrhea and other symptoms. Studies have shown that erythritol is even easier to digest than xylitol. Noncarcinogenic– studies have shown that erythritol, like xylitol, does not have carcinogenic properties. An antioxidant – erythritol helps to fight free radicals, responsible for the aging process. It is considered to be even more efficient than other sugar alcohols because it is so readily absorbed and yet not metabolized (it is excreted unchanged). Source, see: https://bodyecology.com/articles/erythritol_what_you_need_to_know_natural_sugar_substitute.php They recommend an interesting product I have not tried. I am using a mixture of half erythritol and half xylitol, and so far I find that sweetener to be quite acceptable. |
Question: | Where is this sourced? U.S. or China |
Answer: | The source is important, pls be transparent. And made in usa is important, if the sources are from definitely will not buy. |
Question: | What is the difference? "Anthony’s uses cane sugar fermentation vs corn slurry fermentation |
Answer: | In both processes glucose (usually from cornstarch) is converted into erythritol. Anthony's Erythritol used to have a statement in their back label "Product of USA ...derived from cane sugar" but they removed this statement in mid 2019 when the compnay was sold. So it is now probably made from non-GMO corn in China or from from GMO corn in the USA. FYI erythritol is widely promoted as a natural sweetener for being found in nature but the store-bought erythritol is in fact a synthetic sweetener - it is not directly isolated or extracted from a plant or parts of a plant. |

Bon-appe-sweet!
Taste nature’s wildest gift to us yet. By fermenting sugarcane, we create pure sweetness that has no calories and no bitter aftertaste.
All natural. No dirty secrets.
Traditional sugars and sweeteners use petroleum-dependent manufacturing processes and bleaching agents, with byproducts dangerous for people and the earth. Purecane's natural fermentation process leaves out any artificial chemicals.
Making sweet right.
Purecane depends entirely on natural fermentation. That means virtually zero waste (we're almost there!) and no toxic health risks. Purecane is made from sugarcane grown sustainably in Brazil.
Sweet sugarcane taste, no sugar.
At a time when diabetes and other sugar-related health problems are on the rise, many are turning away from sugar-loaded diets to sweeteners that are missing that delicious sugary satisfaction. Purecane passes through the body with no calories and a low glycemic impact.
What is Purecane sweetener?
Purecane Baking Sweetener, also known as fermented sugarcane Reb M, is a no calorie and low-glycemic sweetener that can be used as part of a healthy diet to reduce your intake of sugar, calories and carbohydrates. It is made through a patented fermenting process, that starts with sugarcane and then converts it to a pure, no calorie sweetener without any artificial chemicals. The result is simply a pure, sweet taste that has no bitter aftertaste and is free from all the health worries of added sugar and other alternative sweeteners.
What makes Purecane better than other no calorie sweeteners?
Its pure, sweet and yummy taste! Purecane is revolutionary because it is naturally derived from sugarcane and it’s sugar-free! No calories, no impact on blood sugar levels, no carbohydrates, no artificial chemicals, no GMOs and really importantly - no weird aftertaste!
Is Purecane natural?
Purecane (or fermented sugarcane Reb M) exists in nature today and is found in the stevia leaf. We have found a new way to make Reb M from sugarcane, using the age-old, natural process of fermentation that is used to make beer, wine, bread and kombucha! It’s just a new way of making a natural ingredient.
How does my body process Purecane?
Purecane is not sugar and therefore, it is not processed by the body for energy like sugar is. Instead it passes through, free of calories and carbohydrates.
Disclaimer: Purecane is approved by the FDA and can be used as part of a normal diet to reduce your sugar intake.

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the ingredients |
Answer: | I use brewed coffee instead of water, deliberately add a little extra liquid, and cook it a few seconds longer. It comes out like a mocha lava cake. However, if you don't want that, use a little less liquid and/or cook it a little longer. |
