| Answer: | I am a type two well regulated diabetic taking1000mg of metformin twice daily. When I started using artificial sweeteners, I made a 12 oz. ice tea using either one or two packets of Splenda, Nutra sweet, and sweet’n Low, then checked my glucose level after 20, 40, and 60 minutes. There was less than a 2 point (+or) change at each testing interval. A 2 point difference is well within the normal plus or minus expectations of a single test, so my verdict is, there is no difference at all, at least for me. I only use an artificial sweetener because I am diabetic. If I was not diabetic I would use honey or sugar and stay away from all chemical products. Unfortunately, I don’t have that luxury if I choose to want a sweet beverage. Anyone thinking about using an artificial sweetener should probably check with their doctor or at the very least check their glucose levels to see if they have any significant spikes in their glucose readings when using any artificial sweeteners. If you have to monitor your glucose, you already have a glucose meter. If you don’t you own a glucose meter, you can purchase a fairly reliable inexpensive glucose meter with lancets and test strips for less than $40. Good luck, I hope this helps. |

For example in the case of cookies sugar adds a lot of texture and because it is bulky it fluffs up the cookie mix to give you the right quantity of mix. So for cooked/baked things that call for sugar not just for sweetness but also for the bulking effect, then what you are going to want is a Stevia/Erythritol/Xylitol blend which you can either buy premixed or you can but the separate components and blend them yourself. Generally, the blend would be 45% Erythritol, 45% Xylitol, 10% Stevia which will give you a bulky but yet sweet blend that is very much like regular sugar. In addition to using that blend for baking you an also use it on the table for sweetening your coffee or tea! That blend can even be powered (with a food processor or coffee grinder) and then used to powder donuts, cakes, french toast, etc. The option would be Inulin and Stevia. Like Stevia, inunlin is extracted from plants and also has many health benefits to it. Unlike Erythritol and Xylitol however, inulin has almost no detectable sweetness to it, so you will need to blend in a greater quantity of Stevia with it in order to achieve proper sweetness levels. Inulin is actually already used by many food manufacturers because of the fact that it works so well in baked goods and can actually take the place of oil/fat, flours, and when mixed with Stevia, even sugars, so inulin is incredibly flexible in it's abilities to help with your baked goods. Inulin also adds a wonderful chewy texture to foods! One thing to note... just make sure that if you are going to make any of the above blends that I mentioned that the Stevia you purchase is actually 100% genuine and PURE Stevia and not cut with other bulking substance such as Maltodextrin. Read the label carefully and check reviews to make sure it's 100% pure Stevia, that way the above recipes will come out properly. Once you start using either of the above mentioned blends, you'll be absolutely amazed at all of the wonderful treats you can make with NO ADDED sugar and still taste fantastic, and guilt free! |

| Answer: | Pure stevia is a powder that is super sweet and almost unusable. It is mixed with other sweeteners like erythritol as a carrying agent. I also have a small bottle of the pure powder. It comes with a 25mg scoop. 25mg is a really small amount. I use about 1/3 of the scoop to sweeten a mug of coffee. Any more than that and my coffee is too sweet. This doesn't sound so bad but just try and get that tiny bit of powder in the sccop. The powder is so fine that it clings together, coats the handle of the scoop, and as you tap the scoop against the side of your mug the powder on the scoop handle falls into your coffee also. Like I said the pure powder is not really a usable form of this item and it works much better when it is mixed with something that can be granulated. Don't let the ratios fool you. |
