Baking soda (and borax powder) are commonly used to safely absorb odors and as natural cleaning products and have been for generations. Because this package is a shaker to apply the soda directly on areas to absorb odor, it is probably exactly what you need (you don't ever "shake" baking soda when you are using it in food preparations/actual baking). Carpet refresher powders are simply baking soda (and sometimes soda plus borax powder) with added fragrances, but they cost more. Be warned: baking soda is a very fine powder, and can clog your vacuum cleaner's filters. Also, if you plan to use steam or liquid cleaning method after applying odor absorbing powders, be sure to vacuum the rug/carpet until you can't stand vacuuming any longer; if you leave behind any measurable amount of the soda/powder, if mixed with moisture (steam or liquids) you can end up with a paste residue deep in the carpet fiber/backing which could cause damage eventually. | Answer: | Well for one, everything is made of chemicals. Everything organic is made of chemicals. Some chemicals are good, some are bad, sometimes too much of a good chemical makes them extremely bad (like overdosing on water), while sometimes a tiny bit of a bad one can be just fine (like caffeine, a neurotoxic pesticide). To be considered an organic chemical, it must contain carbon and typically hydrogen, with a range of groups attached (or not). Being organic=/=safe though, nor does being inorganic mean it isn't safe. Table salt (NaCl) is inorganic, and you would be dead if you eliminated it from your diet. While tetrodotoxin is completely organic and only created by living species, yet just a tiny amount would kill you. Regardless of how sodium bicarb (baking soda) is made, the pure final product is indistinguishable from that made with another process. While many creatures, including humans, will form sodium bicarb in their blood, it is unreasonable and extremely expensive to extract it. It also forms naturally in water exposed to CO2, this is the cause of ocean acidification as when dissolved in water it becomes carbonic acid. Most sodium bicarb we have today comes from areas where lakes and ponds, which had a lot of dissolved bicarb, evaporated off leaving it behind often in the form of trona. We mine this and convert it to the baking soda you use today. All pure sodium bicarb is safe for humans the way we use it. |

Here are two-step instructions for opening our buckets: 2-Step Instructions For Opening the Bucket: 1. For a 1-gallon bucket, cut the tabs using a box cutter or scissors. For a 3.5-gallon or 5-gallon bucket, break loose the start of the pull tab with scissors or a screw driver and pull the band off by pulling out or back until that band is completely removed. If you are having trouble pulling on the tab with your hands, pliers can be used for an easier grip. 2. For all buckets, loosen the lid by prying it up one section at a time, working around the lid in sections using a bucket opener, screw driver, or other sturdy tool. Continue working around the lid until it pulls off easily with your hands. |
