14 best quality olive oils

Quality olive oil is a staple in many kitchens around the world. Here's what you should know about it:

  1. Types of Olive Oil:

    • Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO): This is considered the highest quality and most flavorful olive oil. It is extracted from olives using only mechanical methods (no heat or chemicals), and it has the lowest acidity level (below 0.8%).EVOO is often used for drizzling over salads, dipping bread, and other applications where its robust flavor is appreciated.

    • Virgin Olive Oil: Like EVOO, this is also extracted without the use of heat or chemicals, but it has a slightly higher acidity level (up to 2%). It has a good flavor but is considered slightly lower in quality compared to extra virgin.

    • Pure Olive Oil: This is a blend of virgin and refined olive oils. It has a milder flavor and is suitable for cooking at higher temperatures. It may lack the complex flavors of extra virgin oils.

    • Light Olive Oil: Contrary to what the name suggests, "light" here refers to the oil's mild flavor rather than its calorie content. It is often a blend of refined and virgin olive oils. Light olive oil is suitable for recipes where a milder flavor is desired.

  2. Acidity:

    • A lower acidity level is indicative of higher quality olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil has the lowest acidity, while lower grades may have higher acidity levels.
  3. Country of Origin:

    • Olive oils from countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, and Portugal are renowned for their quality. Look for oils labeled with the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), which indicate that the oil comes from a specific region known for its olive oil production.
  4. Bottle Type:

    • Quality olive oils are typically stored in dark, glass bottles. This helps protect the oil from light exposure, which can degrade its quality.
  5. Flavor and Aroma:

    • Extra virgin olive oil should have a distinct, fruity aroma and a taste that ranges from mildly peppery to slightly bitter. These characteristics are indicative of a high-quality oil.
  6. Cold Pressed and First Cold Pressed:

    • These terms refer to the process used to extract the oil from the olives. Cold pressing involves mechanically pressing the olives without using heat or chemicals. The first cold pressing is considered the highest quality.
  7. Certifications:

    • Look for certifications like "PDO" (Protected Designation of Origin) or "PGI" (Protected Geographical Indication), which indicate that the olive oil comes from a specific region known for its quality.
  8. Storage:

    • Quality olive oil should be stored in a cool, dark place to prevent spoilage. It's best consumed within a year or two of purchase to enjoy its full flavor.
  9. Price:

    • While high-quality olive oil can be expensive, it's an investment in flavor and health benefits. Be wary of extremely low-priced oils, as they may not meet the standards of quality.

Remember, taste is subjective, so it's a good idea to try different varieties and find the one that suits your palate best.

High quality Extra Virgin olive oil aids in neutralizing free radicals and diminishes the risk of many types of diseases and strengthens our immune system.

Olive Oil is the greatest exponent of monounsaturated fat (MUFA) and is a prime component of the heart healthy diet. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids that are resistant to oxidation and lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol without affecting HDL (good) cholesterol, which protects against arteriosclerosis.

Product description

Climate, geography and altitude are instrumental to grow times and quality of olives. The village, Soulinari, Greece is only a few miles from the founding epicenter of the Koroneiki olive variety; far enough inland not to be affected by the Mediterranean salt air and Soulinari rests at an altitude 300m above sea level producing incomparable Koroneiki olives. Our olives are harvested by hand using battery powered harvesters, ensuring virtually no carbon footprint. We process our olives in the absence of heat and rely on nature to recycle water and nutrients to the soil. Our olives are Ice Pressed the same day to ensure near flawless acidity! Message from the Founder, MaryRuth Ghiyam My name is MaryRuth and since 2006, I have dedicated my life to health. After my father and brother passed away from heart conditions, my mother became ill with 2 benign brain tumors, and I realized I had to find a way to help my mother heal. At that time, it was the turning point in the economy; we lost everything. Determined to take care of my mother, I traveled the country to learn about the body’s path to healing itself and became a Certified Health Educator, Nutritional Consultant, and later I started a program called The MaryRuth Method. The program helped people reach their ideal weight and better health by teaching them how the digestive tract serves as our “second brain.” In just 1 year, hundreds of people signed up with me to achieve their ideal weight, health & energy! The MaryRuth Method spread so quickly. Soon after, I wanted to develop a line of healthy supplements, made with delicious, wholesome ingredients, that I would feel good about giving my own family and clients.

User questions & answers

Question: Where was this bottled
Answer: Hi there, Great question! The organic olives used are sourced from Greece, though the product itself is bottled in Canada. All of our products are made in the United States and Canada. Please reach out to our Customer Care Team if you have any further questions. With care, Cara
Question: What does 30x colder mean? how do you measure that
Answer: Hi Luanne, Thank you so much for your question! Olives are pressed by a pressing machine to make the oil. Cold press olive oil means that there is no additional heat “added” to the pressing machine but the pressing machines run for hours and do get hot from running for such long periods (imagine you running your vita-mix or a blender for hours after hours; it gets hot!). Ice Pressing means that the press machinery is injected/filled with ice so there is no heat generated. Please reach out to our Customer Care Team with any further questions :) With care, Kris
Question: What size is it
Answer: Twelve fluid ounces. They also show date it was bottled, which I appreciate.
Question: Where are the olives grown and harvested
Answer: SLB,The Koroneiki olives are grown in the village of Soulinari, Greece. Please let me know of any other questions.Kind regards,Colleen

User questions & answers

Question: Is this really for 1 Litre? The picture shows a 750 ml tin
Answer: The one in the photo is the Organic version of the same oil, which is 750ml. The non-organic Zoe Extra Virgin is indeed 1 Litre.
Question: What is the harvest year
Answer: Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder if you can look up the number put on products so the manufacturer can identify the batch and when it was bottled, or in this case canned (in case a particular batch poisons a couple of people, they want to know). Ah, find that number and access this link http://blog.zoebrand.com/?page_id=417 (link also tells you where to look on the bottle or can)
Question: Is this ok for use in bedroom playtime...wink wink
Answer: Yes. The label "extra virgin" signifies that it works very well with one who is a virgin. Getting what ever you have into the tightest of places is not too hard with this product.
Question: I have been reading about fake olive oils - is this one that has been having problems with the oil not being real olive oil
Answer: S. Corcoran, excuse me but the Olive Oil Times does not agree with you on "firming up" being a reliable indicator of EVOO purity. They reported on research done by the University of California Davis Olive Center: "Seven oil samples, including EVOO, lesser grade olive oils, olive oil blends and non-olive oils were placed in a refrigerator and checked at intervals up to 180 hours. Although no samples fully solidified, a sample of EVOO mixed with up to 50 percent lesser grade olive oil congealed in the bottles, meaning it could be interpreted as passing the refrigerator test even though it was not pure EVOO. The study concluded that the Fridge Test is not reliable for determining oil purity or quality." User questions & answers

Question: on the large tin, the 1 liter..what is the spout like? sometimes on the tins when you pour it, it gets all over the top. picture
Answer: I use this tin also. What I do is, after pouring, before standing the tin upright I have a paper towel handy and wipe the excess. This prevents the residual oil from running all over the top of the tin. I will then use a damp paper towel to clean further.
Question: How long is the shelf life
Answer: Current Inventory has a shelf life of more than 18 months. But this changes all the time as we receive new inventory or sell thru.
Question: Is this organic
Answer: While not officially organic, my experience with similar products indicates that some European companies refrain from the expense and process of obtaining a certified organic product. Specifically, a few small business owners have mentioned that the certification only verifies that at least 70% of the product is organic; meaning, the remaining 30% is potentially unknown as to its quality. Possibly inquiring to the company directly about its harvesting techniques, pesticide usage, etc. can provide some enlightenment.
Question: Does this olive oil have a full bodied taste? Is the taste "light" on the olive oil flavor, or jam packed and heavily flavored
Answer: Ellora Farms PDO Kolymvari Extra Virgin Olive Oil has a plush, fruity bouquet of a true Cretan Extra Virgin Olive Oil and a singular peppery soupcon. The body is light and perfect for either cooking, salad dressings or applying to hair or body. This is a traceable Olive Oil and far far different than adulterated oils available in the market today. Trace the origin and health properties of this olive oil. Thank you !

Product features

Discover the full line-up of Zeytin's extra virgin olive oils!

With roots deep into the mythical region of Troy, Zeytin's #1 goal is to bring the best quality olive oils to people who are consistently seeking perfection and integrity. Zeytin's EVOOs are fully traceable and produced from a single variety of olives surrounded by the unique characteristics of the region that not only allow us to produce the best EVOO there is but also do this while maintaining a sustainable ecosystem that consistently delivers rich flavors year after year.

Our limited production allows us to focus on what's important such as integrity, quality, taste and sustainability rather than focusing on financial results, sales numbers or cost cutting measures.

With Zeytin, you always know that your EVOO comes from a single source owned by a family just like yours!

We hope you enjoy our products and make them a staple of your nutritional journey!

No Exposure to Heat

It's a proven fact that contact with heat removes polyphenols (antioxidants) from the olive oil while also reducing flavor and body. Zeytin's olives are never in contact with heat and are always cold processed. That is how we produce premium quality extra virgin olive oils bottle after bottle.

Raw and Untouched

Great extra virgin olive oils do not need to be filtered and Zeytin is no exception. Our extra virgin olive oil is the closest experience to picking the olive right from the branch and eating it with no chemical or physical filtering that occurs between harvest and bottling.

First Day Harvest of Green Olives

99% of our olives are green and picked early to achieve the low acidity of 0.2%-0.7% that makes our products unapologetically extra virgin.

Single Sourced and Traceable

No blends of different grades, seasons, regions and countries. Our product is single-sourced and made from a single type of olive that enhances the flavors unique to our brand.

When & How We Harvest

Olives are picked during the first half of October which is considered early harvest as they are still bright green.

These olives generally yield less oil but have the freshest taste profile and highest nutritional benefits.

How We Protect the Fruit

Olives are stored in crates to enable air circulation and prevent heat.

Olives are immediately transferred, stored in optimum temperatures and squeezed within 2-3 hours of being picked to preserve flavor to its utmost capacity.

How We Process

Olives are cleaned and moved through a selection process where only the best olives find their way into the plant. They are then processed by mechanical means without heat in a clean machinery. Cleanliness is key as any adulterations would strongly impact the flavor of the oil.

How We Protect Your Purchase

Olive oil is then stored in large air-tight containers in temperature regulated storage facilities. Our oils are bottled shortly after and sealed for protection.

Our bottles are coated with UV filters while our special cap blocks air contact when sealed and minimizes exposure after opened.

Our olive groves with young Memecik variety, known to yield a low acidity and rich EVOO. Look at the stunning view!

The history of olive oil can be traced back to 600 BC, where olives were first produced by a facility in west Anatolia near Izmir, Turkey. Symbolizing peace, the olive is mentioned in many parts of scripture and the fruit has always been central to the Mediterranean culture and cuisine. Speaking of the Mediterranean - this beautiful, enduring, patient and giving tree's origins can be traced back to Southeastern Turkey, from where they spread across the Mediterranean blessing every region they inhibited.

During the 2018/2019 harvest season, Turkey was the fourth largest producer of olive oil in Europe and the second largest producer of table olives in the world, which means almost one in every three olives consumed comes from Turkey. Olive oil is an essential part of Turkey’s economy, and we at Zeytin strive to find and produce the finest oils to share with the rest of the world.

We invite you to purchase a bottle and join thousands of satisfied customers who are enamored with Zeytin's EVOOs.

Partanna

Based on 3 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Produced by the Asaro Brothers Company in Partanna, Sicily, this oil is a first cold-pressed, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, but it is also an early harvest (October), single-olive varietal (Nocellara del Belice), unfiltered oil. When the tins are first opened, the oil is cloudy with a green hue, herbaceous aroma and 'pizzicante' flavor. (Pizzicante is an Italian phrase that describes the strong flavor that grips the back of your throat and is characteristic of most Tuscan olive oils.) As the oil ages it will mellow slightly and become clearer as the sediment drops to the bottom of the tin. The colorful packaging is beautiful enough to leave on your countertop and makes a terrific gift!

  • Net quantity of 101 ounces
  • Cold-pressed oil
  • When the tins are first opened, the oil is cloudy with a green hue, herbaceous aroma and 'pizzicante' flavor
  • Will mellow slightly and become clearer as the sediment drops to the bottom of the tin

User questions & answers

Question: How long will the opened can of olives, transferred to glass jars and kept in the brine, keep fresh in the refrigerator
Answer: Don't know about the fridge, but I have kept mine in large glass jars for months on my counter. I drain off the brine and make up another solution using organic EVOO, hot, whole, small peppers (for a little kick), and the olives marinate, the longer the better. I'll give some away in small jars as hostess gifts, serve as hoerderves, snack on them, whatever. For me, the olives hold up well and stay firm. That large can filled up a gallon size Ball jar and a 1/2 gal one at the same time. It makes quite an impressive display while marinating. I've kept them out on the counter for about 3 1/2 months. Delicious! Have not just opened them and placed in the fridge.
Question: Is the description wrong? I see 101 oz tin in the title and 3 oz net of oil in the description. How much olive oil is in this tin
Answer: Jo, it's 101 oz, 3 liters (not oz as in the description). The company should correct that because observant people like you may not buy when they see that.
Question: Love the oil, but don't like how it makes a mess of the can when it pours. Is there a technique to avoid a mess on the can after use
Answer: When you buy a tin of olive oil you need to make a hole with a nail at the other opposite end of the opening of the spigot. This helps the breathing of the can when pouring in to an olive oil canister. make sure to cover the nail hole with the same nail as to not permit any critters to fall in. Your problems will be solved.
Question: I see complaints about pouring, how does everyone else do it who love this oil
Answer: someone help - how do you remove the pour spout from the olive oil glass bottle?

Question: What is expiration date
Answer: This hair oil is an excellent for moisturizing hair for styling. It is very light and could be very beneficial for frizzy dry hair, but I wouldn't apply it daily.
Question: Can fully dented. Afraid to open
Answer: I use it as a detangler for my 3 & 5 yr old girls. They do not have braids. They have a lot of hair, fine, curly. This product keeps their hair from damage from brushing. It may be too oily for fine straight hair.
Question: Is this considered to be "non virgin" olive oil

Question: What is the date of harvest of the can I would be purchasing now
Answer: Based on my own experience and other reviewers, you will receive oil with a harvest date 2 or even three years prior to the year you order it. I would not recommend buying this product
Question: When is the harvest year
Answer: Don't know the harvest year on this one but as a rule of thumb Olive oil is usually harvested in the fall so you want to buy oil that is no older than 1 year old.
Question: Are there any other oils in it
Answer: As I happened to be at its sister eatery, Prime Cuts, for lunch yesterday, I stopped next door in Frankies on Court Street Brooklyn and picked up a liter can of the olive oil...its ingredient is listed as 100% organic extra virgin oilve oil grown, harvested. pressed, produced, packed by a named producer in Partanna, Sicily, Italy, with certification marks by both the Italian and USDA regulatory agencies...in short, it is the "real" stuff...also look at the grapeseed oil...it has a high smoke tolerance factor and is used in the restaurant as its cooking oil and also as the base for its salad oils...hope this is helpful...

User questions & answers

Question: What’s the expiration date
Answer: As of May 2020, my bottle states both Sucralose and Aspartame as ingredients. Blessings.
Question: Do you use this Colavita EVOO for marinades as well as cooking
Answer: RxSugar® is a low-calorie natural plant-based sugar and, per the FDA, is different from other sugars in that it is not metabolized by the human body in the same way as table sugar. RxSugar uses Allulose, which is clinically and scientifically proven to have zero net carbohydrate impact; this is why the Allulose carbohydrates are subtracted from the Total Carbs to produce zero net carbohydrates. Allulose is a natural sugar that does not affect your blood sugar or insulin levels. For all products, the Net Carb Calculation is Total Carbs less Allulose Carbs = Zero Net Carbs.
Question: Do you use this Colavita EVOO for marinades as well as cooking
Answer: There is no comparison – RxSugar is categorically superior – simply look at the ingredient list: RxSugar Organic Pancake Syrup: Three (3) USDA Organic Certified, Non-GMO Project Verified Ingredients - Organic Allulose, Organic Maple Flavor, Organic Caramel Color Walden Farms Pancake Syrup: Twelve (12) ingredients (many of which are unidentifiable or unpronounceable) – Zero Certifications – Ingredients: triple filtered purified water, cellulose gel, maple flavor, sucralose, salt, sodium acid Sulfate, xanthan gum, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate (to preserve freshness), caramel Color, Natural flavors, beta carotene. Our Premium Olive Oils

This Colavita Premium Selection Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the quintessential everyday oil that is well balanced between fruit and spice and delicate in flavor. We have sourced selections from new harvest oils to create this traditional Colavita flavor, which represents the Colavita family legacy. Cold production obtained exclusively from olives harvested in one or more of these countries: Italy (I), Greece (GR), Spain (E) or Portugal (P). Imported from Italy, this Premium Selection Extra Virgin Olive Oil bears the North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA) Quality Seal, which means it has been tested for both quality and authenticity according to the International Olive Council (IOC) standards.

As a trusted family company we want to ensure our customers that our products are authentic. The Cermet seal certifies that Colavita Premium Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil is obtained exclusively from olives harvested and pressed in Italy.

What is Extra Virgin?

'Extra' is the highest grade for olive oil. Virgin oil may be called 'extra' if it has less than 0.8% free oleic acid, and if it exhibits superior taste and aroma. Thus, the 'extra' in extra virgin olive oil means 'premium' or simply, 'the best'.

Why Olive Oil?

Extra virgin olive oils are not processed or refined. Extra virgin olive oil is essentially 'fresh squeezed' from the fruit of the olive tree, without alteration of the color, taste, and nutrients or vitamins. Because of the integrity of the product, and its antioxidant components, extra virgin olive oil will keep longer than all other vegetable oils.

Better than Butter?

Colavita olive oils can be used in place of butter or margarine in many recipes, such as on vegetables, rice, potatoes, and–yes–even baking! To try olive oil in your recipe, try our olive oil recipe converter.

Olive Oil Certification Programs

North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA).

Only organization collecting samples off the shelf at the point of retail sale, which is especially important in measuring quality, which can change over time or with handling.

Only organization performing the full International Olive Council (IOC) tests for authenticity (i.e., purity).

Participants cannot choose the samples or where they come from.

Use highly experienced IOC testing facilities, most frequently in Italy or Spain, two of the largest olive oil producing and consuming nations in the world.

Grades of Olive Oil

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The highest grade and most versatile due to the range of flavor profiles available. Virgin oil must be unrefined, have less than 0.8% free oleic acid and exhibit superior taste and aroma.

Virgin Olive Oil

Virgin olive oil is also unrefined but has a higher level of oleic acid and less bold flavor than extra virgin olive oil.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a blend of virgin and refine. Heat and chemicals are used in the process of extracting oil and removing flaws. Olive oil contains less than 1% of oleic acid and is a household all-purpose cooking oil.

Olive Pomace Oil

Olive pomace oil is a lesser quality. It is a blend of refined pomace oil and virgin olive oil. Its mild taste is the result of a refining process using chemicals.

Refined Oil

Refined olive oil is made from refining virgin olive oils that have a high acidity level to eliminate defects. It is generally tasteless, colorless, and has no odor.

Answer: I don't know but northern Africa olive oil is known to have the highest polyphenol count
Question: Does the bottle have a product date and expiration date
Answer: Yes. Both the harvest/processing or Lot date (in European format: DDMMYYYY) and the best by or BB date (in USA format: MM/DD/YYYY) are printed on the back label.
Question: will you make glass bottles in future? Plastics are not good for product, environment, and our bodies
Answer: Our bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic so we're actually helping the environment. They're also BPA free. In 2021 we're launching a limited harvest 'family reserve' in glass bottles. Please keep a look out for it. Thanks ~ Mina
