13 best organic olive oils

Organic olive oil is a type of cooking oil that is produced using organic farming practices and is derived from olives. Here's what you should know about organic olive oil:

  1. Organic Farming: Organic olive oil is made from olives that are grown using organic farming methods. This means that the olive trees are cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

  2. No Chemicals: Organic olive oil is processed without the use of chemical solvents or artificial additives. The extraction process typically involves mechanical pressing or cold-pressing, which preserves the oil's natural flavor and health benefits.

  3. Quality Standards: Organic olive oil is subject to stringent quality standards to ensure that it meets organic certification requirements. These standards often include guidelines for soil health, crop rotation, and the responsible use of natural resources.

  4. Health Benefits: Organic olive oil is well-regarded for its potential health benefits. It is a rich source of monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, such as vitamin E and polyphenols, which are believed to have various health-promoting properties, including heart health and anti-inflammatory effects.

  5. Varieties: Organic olive oil comes in various varieties, depending on factors like the olive cultivars used and the region of production.Common types include extra virgin, virgin, and regular (or pure) olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil, in particular, is highly prized for its superior flavor and quality, as it is the least processed and retains the most natural olive flavor.

  6. Flavor Profiles: Organic olive oils can have a wide range of flavor profiles, from mild and buttery to robust and peppery. The flavor largely depends on factors like the olive variety, ripeness at harvest, and production methods.

  7. Culinary Uses: Organic olive oil is a versatile cooking oil. It is commonly used for sautéing, roasting, grilling, and as a salad dressing base. Extra virgin olive oil is often used for finishing dishes or drizzling over salads to enhance their flavor.

  8. Sustainability: Many producers of organic olive oil are committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, such as conserving water, minimizing waste, and promoting biodiversity in olive groves.

  9. Certification: Organic olive oils are certified by relevant organic certification bodies to ensure they meet organic standards. Look for certifications like USDA Organic in the United States or the EU Organic Logo in Europe.

Organic olive oil is prized for its natural and sustainable production methods, potential health benefits, and the wide range of culinary applications it offers. It's a staple in Mediterranean cuisine and a popular choice for health-conscious consumers who prioritize organic and natural ingredients in their cooking.

Question: What is the expiration date? I see on the bottle in the display images a best by date of
Answer: I purchased this product in 2015 or early 2016 so I can't vouch for the expiration date, however I do check all dates on everything I purchase and their would have been an issue if something was expired upon receipt. Please take in mind the picture they use is for the product display purposes only and only showing what the current product looks like now, they do not have to change pictures according to an expiration date running out.

Our Everyday is now available in a new larger chef size, in a lightweight, recyclable plastic bottle.". Cubic: 0.031. CERTIFIED NON GMO

User questions & answers

Question: Polyphenol count
Answer: The polyphenol count is not noted anywhere. This is a good olive oil for everyday cooking. It is not bitter so my gut feel is it may not have high polyphenol count.
Question: how much is in each bottle
Answer: 16.9 (Fl Oz) per Bottle it also comes is other sizes for (Everyday EVOO) - 25 (Fl Oz) - 33 (Fl Oz) - and Chef Size 47 (Fl Oz)
Question: is this organic olive oil
Answer: not knowing your definition of "organic" I can only tell you is is NON-GMO Verified, KETO Certified, PALEO Certified, WHOLE 30 Certified. And per the website, has State of California Certification that no other substances are used to cut the EVOO, so I consider it pure.
Question: Is this from 100% california grown olives? i know what the post says, but comments on another california olive ranch product makes me wary
Answer: The bottles labled Destination Series, and harvested in the 2017-2018 harvest season are not from 100% California grown olives. The label on the basic bottle you can find in stores now says Destination Series and says the olives are sourced from growers in California, Argentina, Chile, and Portugal, then refined and bottled in California. It does NOT have the California Olive Oil Council seal. It does have a seal in place of that saying it is certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I have an older bottle on hand from the 2015 harvest. The label says it uses 100% California grown olives and it has the California Olive Oil Council seal. This is the one Cooks Illustrated recommended where they explained olive sourcing and why it is better to buy from companies that bottle close to and soon after harvest. Many loyal customers, as you can see in the reviews, are upset about this, thinking California Olive Ranch betrayed them. They have been buying for a while and probably didn't look closely at the label. I can't blame them for feeling baited and switched. If this disappoints you, as it did me, wait for the next harvest before dismissing California Olive Ranch entirely. I have no affiliation or insider knowledge but I believe this is only a temporary change due to a bad harvest. In fact, the company's CEO is on record in the NY Times as saying the 2018 California olive harvest was a disaster for growers due to the unseasonably cold winter (elsewhere, it was reported it sent CA olive oil manufactures scrambling to find olives to stay afloat and meet demand) and that they had established partnerships with other countries a few years ago in case of this very situation. He also said at least 26% of the oil in each Destination Series bottle is from California. It was also in the news late last year that California Olive Ranch is expanding their plantings by 2000 acres, which should help mitigate less productive years.

User questions & answers

Question: What harvest date is being shipped now? What expiration date
Answer: Harvest was fall of 2019 and expiration date is 12/31/2021. Also, the low acidity gives this oil a very long shelf life - it will still be good beyond that.
Question: when will the 2020 harvest be available in this size
Answer: Dear Yellow.Jacket, The harvest just finished. They are being packaged and will ship first thing 2021. They will ship and arrive about a month from now. We had the farmers pick an extra early harvest version (all green olives) which will arrive in about a week and will be available on our web site. But those will be smaller bottles. Thank you and have a Happy New Year! -The Ancient Foods Team
Question: Is there a harvest date on the label
Answer: The date is to the right lower corner of the handle Mine is: BEST. Befor/12/2021 LN/13012020
Question: Very happy to have found this extra virgin first-press olive oil from ancient olive trees ~ yet refrigeration did not solidify - what is wrong
Answer: Some olive oil producers "winterize" their oils so that it doesn't become inconveniently solid on cellar shelves during the winter. They chill the oil and filter out the wax that solidifies or clumps up. In this way, they can ensure that their oil is always pourable. Because this 100% oil does not solidify when chilled does not mean that it has been cut with inferior oils or that it is not the real thing. It just means that they used the "winterize" process so as to keep the oil fluid when cold. Different solutes within the oil solidify at different temperatures which enables the producer to separate out the solutes that become solid when chilled which leaves the solutes that do not solidify to allow for easy pouring. Hope this helps..

Question: Is this gmo free
Answer: I don't know its all gone and I don't have the can any longer
Question: Is this mixed oils from different countries

Question: Is it DOP or PDO desiganted
Answer: I went back to the Amazon listing for this item and found no mention of DOP or PDO designation and nothing is indicated on the tin of oil. I did, however, find a D.P.O. designation for a different Zoe product temporarily unavailable.http://www.amazon.com/Zoe-Select-Olive-Variety-25-36/dp/B00NJP09WM - Who can know?
Question: Is the can lining BPA free? I know the ZOE kids olive oil has a can with a BPA free lining
Answer: The label on the can says it has a BPA free lining.

User questions & answers

Question: According to the Colavita site, the Organic EVOO has a REDDISH-brown label, and is clearly marked 100% Organic. Is this one organic or not? Thank you
Answer: The one I get just says "organic", and also has the USDA Organic label on the side. The thumbnail on the left is not the organic version. I don't see it on this site. Now http://store.colavita.com/oils/extra-virgin-olive-oils/colavita-organic-extra-virgin-olive-oil-16-9-oz-glass.html has it, but the label is different from mine.I always find it tricky to locate the "organic" version: There seems to be some "versioning" going on with the labels. I spend the trouble searching as, for me, it's worth it. Hope that helps.
Question: is the 2 liter plastic bottle BPA free
Answer: It is glass.
Question: could I use this to cook with also
Answer: Yes but not at a high temperature or for a long amount of time.
Question: expiration date
Answer: Very good expiration date for the bottle I purchased. I used the entire contents well before expiration. Excellent quality by the way...I love organic olive oil.

Extra Virgin?

“Extra” is the highest grade for olive oil. Virgin oil may be called “extra” if it has less than 0.8% free oleic acid, and if it exhibits superior taste and aroma. Thus, the “extra” in extra virgin olive oil means “premium.”

Why Choose Extra Virgin?

Extra virgin olive oils are not processed or refined. Extra virgin olive oil is essentially “fresh squeezed” from the fruit of the olive tree, without alteration of the color, taste, and nutrients or vitamins. Because of the integrity of the product, and its antioxidant components, extra virgin olive oil will keep longer than all other vegetable oils.

Better than Butter?

Olive Oil Certification Programs

North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA)

ONLY organization collecting samples off the shelf at the point of retail sale, which is especially important in measuring quality, which can change over time or with handling.

ONLY organization performing the full International Olive Council (IOC) tests for authenticity (i.e., purity).

Participants cannot choose the samples or where they come from.

Use highly experienced IOC testing facilities, most frequently in Italy or Spain, two of the largest olive oil producing and consuming nations in the world. (Certified by IndLab on September 3, 2019)

Olive Oil Grades

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

The highest grade and most versatile due to the range of flavor profiles available. Virgin oil must be unrefined, have less than 0.8% free oleic acid and exhibit superior taste and aroma.

Virgin Olive Oil

Virgin olive oil is also unrefined but has a higher level of oleic acid and less bold flavor than extra virgin olive oil.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a blend of virgin and refine. Heat and chemicals are used in the process of extracting oil and removing flaws. Olive oil contains less than 1% of oleic acid and is a household all-purpose cooking oil.

Olive Pomace Oil

Olive pomace oil is a lesser quality. It is a blend of refined pomace oil and virgin olive oil. Its mild taste is the result of a refining process using chemicals.

Refined Oil

Refined olive oil is made from refining virgin olive oils that have a high acidity level to eliminate defects. It is generally tasteless, colorless, and has no odor.

User questions & answers

Question: What’s the batch date? Not just an expirations date, if possible both
Answer: I don't see a batch date on the bottle, but the expiration date is July 4, 2022. It tastes very fresh to me.
Question: When are you going to get the fresh batch from 2013 harvest
Answer: The fresh batch is 2018 crop, so I think this question doesn’t make sense. Also, the seller acn tell you, not other customers.
Question: Different label. Any difference in the oil
Answer: It comes in organic and regular. I buy whatever is available. Only oil I use. It is the best.
Question: Is this the unfiltered version
Answer: I believe it is unfiltered... Perhaps partially filtered... It is a green oil and has some fine sediment in it. Shows as cloudy when shaken up.... It is a great oil. Don't cook with it that removes the wonderful flavor.... Lew Mitchell
