14 best oil olive oils
Olive oil is a popular cooking oil with a rich history and a wide range of culinary and health benefits. Here's what you should know about olive oil in the context of cooking oils, pantry staples, and grocery gourmet food:
Varieties: Olive oil comes in several varieties, each with its own flavor profile and ideal uses. The most common types include Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), Virgin Olive Oil, Pure Olive Oil, and Light Olive Oil. Extra virgin olive oil is considered the highest quality and is often used for drizzling over salads or as a finishing oil, while other types may be better suited for cooking.
Extraction: Olive oil is extracted from olives, the fruit of the olive tree. The oil is typically obtained through a pressing process, and extra virgin olive oil is cold-pressed, which means it undergoes minimal processing and retains more of the natural flavors and nutrients.
Flavor: The flavor of olive oil can vary depending on the type of olives used, the region they are grown in, and the processing method. Extra virgin olive oil is known for its rich, fruity, and sometimes peppery taste. It's often used for salad dressings and dipping bread.
Cooking: Olive oil is a versatile cooking oil and is commonly used for sautéing, roasting, and frying. However, it's important to choose the right type of olive oil for the cooking method. While extra virgin olive oil is great for low to medium-heat cooking, it has a lower smoke point than some other oils, so it's not ideal for high-heat frying.
Health Benefits: Olive oil is known for its potential health benefits. It is a good source of monounsaturated fats, which are considered heart-healthy. It also contains antioxidants, such as vitamin E, and may have anti-inflammatory properties. The Mediterranean diet, which includes olive oil as a primary fat source, is associated with numerous health benefits.
Storage: Olive oil should be stored in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight and heat, to prevent it from becoming rancid. It is best kept in a tightly sealed, opaque container.
Quality: When purchasing olive oil, look for reputable brands and check the label for information on its origin, type, and any certifications, such as "Certified Extra Virgin." High-quality olive oil will often have a seal of approval from a relevant organization.
Culinary Uses: Besides cooking, olive oil can be used in various culinary applications, including salad dressings, marinades, and as a drizzle over grilled vegetables or pasta dishes.
Olive oil is a staple in many kitchens around the world due to its versatility and the rich, complex flavors it can add to dishes. It is not only a key ingredient but also a symbol of Mediterranean cuisine and healthy cooking.

Our Premium Olive Oils
This Colavita Premium Selection Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the quintessential everyday oil that is well balanced between fruit and spice and delicate in flavor. We have sourced selections from new harvest oils to create this traditional Colavita flavor, which represents the Colavita family legacy. Cold production obtained exclusively from olives harvested in one or more of these countries: Italy (I), Greece (GR), Spain (E) or Portugal (P). Imported from Italy, this Premium Selection Extra Virgin Olive Oil bears the North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA) Quality Seal, which means it has been tested for both quality and authenticity according to the International Olive Council (IOC) standards.
As a trusted family company we want to ensure our customers that our products are authentic. The Cermet seal certifies that Colavita Premium Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil is obtained exclusively from olives harvested and pressed in Italy.
What is Extra Virgin?
'Extra' is the highest grade for olive oil. Virgin oil may be called 'extra' if it has less than 0.8% free oleic acid, and if it exhibits superior taste and aroma. Thus, the 'extra' in extra virgin olive oil means 'premium' or simply, 'the best'.
Why Olive Oil?
Extra virgin olive oils are not processed or refined. Extra virgin olive oil is essentially 'fresh squeezed' from the fruit of the olive tree, without alteration of the color, taste, and nutrients or vitamins. Because of the integrity of the product, and its antioxidant components, extra virgin olive oil will keep longer than all other vegetable oils.
Better than Butter?
Colavita olive oils can be used in place of butter or margarine in many recipes, such as on vegetables, rice, potatoes, and–yes–even baking! To try olive oil in your recipe, try our olive oil recipe converter.
Olive Oil Certification Programs
North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA).
Only organization collecting samples off the shelf at the point of retail sale, which is especially important in measuring quality, which can change over time or with handling.
Only organization performing the full International Olive Council (IOC) tests for authenticity (i.e., purity).
Participants cannot choose the samples or where they come from.
Use highly experienced IOC testing facilities, most frequently in Italy or Spain, two of the largest olive oil producing and consuming nations in the world.
Grades of Olive Oil
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The highest grade and most versatile due to the range of flavor profiles available. Virgin oil must be unrefined, have less than 0.8% free oleic acid and exhibit superior taste and aroma.
Virgin Olive Oil
Virgin olive oil is also unrefined but has a higher level of oleic acid and less bold flavor than extra virgin olive oil.
Olive Oil
Olive oil is a blend of virgin and refine. Heat and chemicals are used in the process of extracting oil and removing flaws. Olive oil contains less than 1% of oleic acid and is a household all-purpose cooking oil.
Olive Pomace Oil
Olive pomace oil is a lesser quality. It is a blend of refined pomace oil and virgin olive oil. Its mild taste is the result of a refining process using chemicals.
Refined Oil
Refined olive oil is made from refining virgin olive oils that have a high acidity level to eliminate defects. It is generally tasteless, colorless, and has no odor.

Answer: | I haven’t used it that way, but I would imagine it is, as it is an excellent olive oil. |
Question: | does the pour bottle have a spout |
Answer: | (I’m out of town so don’t have it in front of me). It has a plastic insert that’s not a spout but just makes it a bit easier to pour. I still find it comes out pretty quick! Easy solution would be buy a spout to attach to the bottle, or transfer the oil to a bottle with a spout. |
Question: | Is it considered “three cough olive oil |
Answer: | I would say this is a milder oil. Not at all a 3 cough..no peppery taste.... |
Question: | I'm planning to use this on my face. Does it smell strongly |
Answer: | I bought this product and absolutely love it! I use for cooking, dipping, brusetta, omg delicious!! I am very fussy with smelling my food before I eat it. This product never had a rancid smell like other oils. It has a beautiful greenish color and a delicate smell of olives. I have used on my skin at times! I don't think you will be disappointed!! Produced by the Asaro Brothers Company in Partanna, Sicily, this oil is a first cold-pressed, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, but it is also an early harvest (October), single-olive varietal (Nocellara del Belice), unfiltered oil. When the tins are first opened, the oil is cloudy with a green hue, herbaceous aroma and 'pizzicante' flavor. (Pizzicante is an Italian phrase that describes the strong flavor that grips the back of your throat and is characteristic of most Tuscan olive oils.) As the oil ages it will mellow slightly and become clearer as the sediment drops to the bottom of the tin. The colorful packaging is beautiful enough to leave on your countertop and makes a terrific gift!

User questions & answers
Question: | How long will the opened can of olives, transferred to glass jars and kept in the brine, keep fresh in the refrigerator |
Answer: | Don't know about the fridge, but I have kept mine in large glass jars for months on my counter. I drain off the brine and make up another solution using organic EVOO, hot, whole, small peppers (for a little kick), and the olives marinate, the longer the better. I'll give some away in small jars as hostess gifts, serve as hoerderves, snack on them, whatever. For me, the olives hold up well and stay firm. That large can filled up a gallon size Ball jar and a 1/2 gal one at the same time. It makes quite an impressive display while marinating. I've kept them out on the counter for about 3 1/2 months. Delicious! Have not just opened them and placed in the fridge. |
Question: | Is the description wrong? I see 101 oz tin in the title and 3 oz net of oil in the description. How much olive oil is in this tin |
Answer: | Jo, it's 101 oz, 3 liters (not oz as in the description). The company should correct that because observant people like you may not buy when they see that. |
Question: | Love the oil, but don't like how it makes a mess of the can when it pours. Is there a technique to avoid a mess on the can after use |
Answer: | When you buy a tin of olive oil you need to make a hole with a nail at the other opposite end of the opening of the spigot. This helps the breathing of the can when pouring in to an olive oil canister. make sure to cover the nail hole with the same nail as to not permit any critters to fall in. Your problems will be solved. |
Question: | I see complaints about pouring, how does everyone else do it who love this oil |
Answer: | someone help - how do you remove the pour spout from the olive oil glass bottle? |

User questions & answers
Question: | on the large tin, the 1 liter..what is the spout like? sometimes on the tins when you pour it, it gets all over the top. picture |
Answer: | I use this tin also. What I do is, after pouring, before standing the tin upright I have a paper towel handy and wipe the excess. This prevents the residual oil from running all over the top of the tin. I will then use a damp paper towel to clean further. |
Question: | How long is the shelf life |
Answer: | Current Inventory has a shelf life of more than 18 months. But this changes all the time as we receive new inventory or sell thru. |
Question: | Is this organic |
Answer: | While not officially organic, my experience with similar products indicates that some European companies refrain from the expense and process of obtaining a certified organic product. Specifically, a few small business owners have mentioned that the certification only verifies that at least 70% of the product is organic; meaning, the remaining 30% is potentially unknown as to its quality. If not efficiently controlled, production can fall by 80%.Ellora Farms uses ECO-TRAP as a mass trapping method for olive fruit fly control at the Olive estates in Kolymvari, Crete in substitution for any insecticides and pesticides.
Advantages of the Eco Trap
- Olive fruit fly is controlled effectively avoiding insecticidal sprays
- No chemical residues are left on olive fruit and leaves
- No chemical insecticides are spread in the environment
- Predators’ population is not affected
- Predator and parasitoid populations are not affected
Heart Healthy
While all types of olive oil are sources of monounsaturated fat, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, from the cold extraction of the olives, contains higher levels of antioxidants, high concentration of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), and phenols, because it is less processed.
High quality Extra Virgin olive oil aids in neutralizing free radicals and diminishes the risk of many types of diseases and strengthens our immune system.
Olive Oil is the greatest exponent of monounsaturated fat (MUFA) and is a prime component of the heart healthy diet. Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids that are resistant to oxidation and lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol without affecting HDL (good) cholesterol, which protects against arteriosclerosis.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this really for 1 Litre? The picture shows a 750 ml tin |
Answer: | The one in the photo is the Organic version of the same oil, which is 750ml. The non-organic Zoe Extra Virgin is indeed 1 Litre. |
Question: | What is the harvest year |
Answer: | Hmmmmmmmm, I wonder if you can look up the number put on products so the manufacturer can identify the batch and when it was bottled, or in this case canned (in case a particular batch poisons a couple of people, they want to know). Ah, find that number and access this link http://blog.zoebrand.com/?page_id=417 (link also tells you where to look on the bottle or can) |
Question: | Is this ok for use in bedroom playtime...wink wink |
Answer: | Yes. The label "extra virgin" signifies that it works very well with one who is a virgin. Getting what ever you have into the tightest of places is not too hard with this product. |
Question: | I have been reading about fake olive oils - is this one that has been having problems with the oil not being real olive oil |
Answer: | S. Corcoran, excuse me but the Olive Oil Times does not agree with you on "firming up" being a reliable indicator of EVOO purity. They reported on research done by the University of California Davis Olive Center: "Seven oil samples, including EVOO, lesser grade olive oils, olive oil blends and non-olive oils were placed in a refrigerator and checked at intervals up to 180 hours. Although no samples fully solidified, a sample of EVOO mixed with up to 50 percent lesser grade olive oil congealed in the bottles, meaning it could be interpreted as passing the refrigerator test even though it was not pure EVOO. The study concluded that the Fridge Test is not reliable for determining oil purity or quality."
