12 best oats steel cuts
Steel-cut oats are a type of oatmeal that is minimally processed and known for their hearty, chewy texture and nutty flavor. Here's some information about steel-cut oats:
Processing Method: Steel-cut oats are made from whole oat groats that have been chopped into two or three pieces with large steel blades. This minimal processing distinguishes them from rolled oats and instant oats, which are steamed and flattened.
Nutritional Value: Steel-cut oats are a nutritious breakfast option. They are a good source of dietary fiber, particularly beta-glucans, which can help with cholesterol management and blood sugar control. They also provide vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Cooking Time: One of the key characteristics of steel-cut oats is their longer cooking time compared to rolled oats or instant oats. They typically take around 20-30 minutes to cook on the stovetop. Some people prefer to soak them overnight to reduce cooking time.
Texture: Steel-cut oats have a chewy texture and a slightly nutty taste. They retain their shape and don't become as mushy as rolled oats when cooked, which makes them appealing to those who enjoy a heartier oatmeal.
Variations: You can customize your steel-cut oats by adding various toppings and ingredients. Common additions include fruits (like berries, bananas, or apples), nuts (such as almonds or walnuts), sweeteners (like honey or maple syrup), and spices (such as cinnamon or nutmeg).
Health Benefits: Steel-cut oats are considered a healthy breakfast choice due to their fiber content, which can aid in digestion and provide a feeling of fullness. They may also help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Gluten Content: While oats themselves are naturally gluten-free, there can be cross-contamination with gluten-containing grains during processing. If you have a gluten sensitivity or allergy, look for certified gluten-free steel-cut oats.
Storage: To keep steel-cut oats fresh, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. They have a longer shelf life than rolled oats because they retain the whole oat groat.
Cooking Tips: To prepare steel-cut oats, you'll typically need to simmer them in water or milk until they reach your desired consistency. Stirring occasionally prevents sticking, and you can adjust the liquid-to-oats ratio to achieve your preferred thickness.
Availability: Steel-cut oats are widely available in grocery stores and online. They are often sold in bulk or in packages, and you can find various brands offering them.
In summary, steel-cut oats are a nutritious and hearty breakfast option with a distinct texture and flavor. They require longer cooking times compared to other oat varieties but are valued for their health benefits and versatility in customization.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you eat it raw |
Answer: | It wouldn't kill you to eat itout of the can but it would be hard and not taste good. You can soak it with water in a cup overnight in the fridge and wat it cold. You can also cook it and eat it hot. |
Question: | Where is this packaged? i had a canister a while back and called and found out that it was irish oats but packaged in the usa, with gluten in facility |
Answer: | I have used this product for at least 20 years. It is completely non-GMO and the container does not list any gluten. Ingredients are from Ireland. I'm not concerned with gluten so I don't have an opinion there. I do know that I find them the best natural oats I've ever tasted. They are great for the heart, like all natural oats and they keep my "system" regular and healthy. I either let them soak overnight in my fridge or boil them in the morning for a couple minutes, then let them sit for a couple hours before cooking. EJ |

Product description
Great River Organic Milling is located on the upper Mississippi River, in the heart of what is called the Hiawatha Valley. The natural beauty of the area is a constant reminder of the importance of our commitment to organic agriculture. Organic, or sustainable agriculture is more than the avoidance of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. An organic farm strives to protect our environment by building and maintaining healthy soil which, in turn, improves water and air quality. It has been shown that grain and other food crops grown in a healthy soil, resist pests and diseases better than conventionally grown crops and also contain more vital nutrients important to humans. Consuming organic foods promotes the health of individuals and the land on which it was grown. In supporting organic agriculture we promote the cycle of a healthy environment which includes the lives of microorganisms, plants, and humans. Most Great River flour is stone-ground. We believe the natural granite millstones contribute to the quality, taste and nutritional integrity of whole grain flour. Grain flowing into the stones becomes very thin, flat flakes which integrates all parts of the wheat immediately into the flour, allowing the flour to have more flavor. The cooler temperatures that occur during milling with stones allows important enzyme activity to continue. Protein levels are also be maintained. Our stone-ground flours are milled to order, to retain the nutritional value of the flour. Great River is Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International and Kosher approved. Obtaining our certification requires a yearly inspection of our milling facility and records to insure that our products meet industry standards.
- STEEL CUT OATS: The process of taking oat groats (the whole kernel of grain) and running them through a mill that has steel blades that chop the groats into small pieces. The thicker pieces provide a nutty flavor and a thicker texture after cooking.
- "IRISH OATMEAL": Steel-cut oats have a nuttier, chewier texture than rolled oats. There is a little bit longer cook time than with oat flakes, but it is worth the wait. Use them for versatile oatmeal or overnight oat recipes, or for crunchy granola.
- HEART HEALTHY: These clean oats are heart-healthy, contain no chemicals, and have whole grain nutrition. One serving provides about 4g of fiber. It is also a good supply of plant-based protein and iron for when you include them in breakfast or snacks.
- CERTIFIED ORGANIC AND KOSHER APPROVED: Kosher approved and Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International, made from organic grains that are Non-GMO.
- RECOMMENDED STORAGE AND USE: Steel Cut Oats are shelf stable and can be stored in the pantry but for prolonged storage we recommend refrigeration or freezing.
- One, 25-pound bag
- Certified organic; non-GMO grains

Question: | Taste with Laundry detergent smell, how about yours |
Answer: | We have eaten these for a few years. Order in qty of 6 i believe. Once before they tasted and smelled like cinnamon had been added. Now, the order we made in june or july has a very strong soap/perfume/floral or essential oil smell and taste. Have not contacted the company yet. |
Question: | how are the quick oats and old fashioned oats different |
Answer: | Essentially, quick oats are just more processed old fashioned oats. Quick oats are partially cooked rolled oats that have been cut into smaller pieces so that they cook faster. Old fashioned oats are partially cooked rolled oats and left whole and therefore take a little longer to cook. |
Question: | How can you make the glutenous oat grain, a gluten free |

Answer: | Complain to Amazon |
Question: | Im so not happy right now, it saud 4 packs 24oz each for $24 and they sent ine package for $24 ??!!!?? ohhh i am angry rigt now |
Answer: | complain to Amazon - miss-advertised |
Question: | Seller sent 1 pack not |

User questions & answers
Question: | It says packed in US, where was it grown? Also, why does it say don’t look under the bag |
Answer: | Interestingly, I can't find where it actually says where the grains are grown. The "don't look under the bag" is just a shtick. It makes you look of course and there's something cute written on the bottom. Just a funny. :-) |
Question: | Can it be made quickly in the microwave |
Answer: | No. These steel cut oats are not “quick oats”. Because they are not flakes, they take much longer to absorb moisture. If you want to prepare them quickly in a microwave for breakfast, soak in milk or water overnight in your refrigerator. |
Question: | How do you make breakfast oatmeal? There’s no recipe even though they say you can make it in advance. Water and cook time |
Answer: | Bring water to boil, add oatmeal, stir, reduce heat to low and cook for approximately 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Water to oatmeal ratio of 3 to 1. For example, 3/4 cup water and 1/4 cup oatmeal for 1 serving. One and a half cups water and 1/2 cup oatmeal for 2 servings |
Question: | is this organic |
Answer: | No GMO, gluten free. That's what I was looking for. It doesn't say Organic. The quality is good, it cooks pretty quickly and has a creamy texture. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this organic |
Answer: | These are raw, organic Garbanzo beans (otherwise known as Chickpeas) - they should sprout just fine or could be planted also. |
Question: | Is the bucket opener go with the steel oats ? if not where can i buy a bucket opener ? it is not on the amazon |
Answer: | Yes they are! |
Question: | The description says this is steel cut, but the picture of the bucket indicates that it is uncut oat groats. It can't be both, so which is it |
Answer: | Hi There! Chickpeas roughly double their weight once cooked. To get 250g cooked chickpeas you need to cook 125g (3/4 cup) dried chickpeas. Can sizes are fairly standard and about 400g/15 ounces which yields 250g (1 1/2 cups) of beans once drained. There are 453 grams in a pound so a 1lb bag of dried chick peas would equal just over 3 1/2 cans of chickpeas. Blessings! Diana @ Be Still Farms The Carolinas |
Question: | How long is shelf life of one bucket |
Answer: | Hi there! For some reason something is going on right now with prices randomly changing! Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Our 5lb bag (.31/oz) price has remained untouched if you want to buy that, otherwise I can generate a coupon for you. Just let me know. We are hoping things will settle down soon! Blessings! Organic Steel Cut Oats
Also known as Irish oats or pinhead oats, steel cut oats create a chewy, full-bodied hot cereal. While steel cut oats have a longer cooking time compared to rolled oats, they’re well worth the effort! Cooking steel cut oats in the slow cooker overnight means you’ll wake up to a delicious whole grain breakfast, no stirring required! We do not recommend cooking steel cut oats in the microwave, unless it’s the quick cooking variety.
