User questions & answers

Question: is this a cut or rolled product
Answer: cut
Question: Can I ask why you are selling for $24 when the store use to have it for $3.50 a bag, my 95 year Dad loves it but can't find it locally
Answer: Again, it is back on the Bob's Red Mill website, go there!
Question: Is this the same size bag that sells for less than $4.00 on the red mill website? If so, why is the price so high here
Answer: At the time I made the purchase, Bob's Red Mill's website did not have it in stock, nor could I find it at the store I normally buy it from. It was for my 93 year old dad who loves it, so it was a gift I was willing to pay for. It is now back in stock, so I wouldn't pay this price again.

User questions & answers

Question: Does bob's red mill farro have the husk
Answer: If it says pearled that means it is not whole (no husk). If it cooks in 30 minutes is pealed. Whole farro will take more like 60 minutes
Question: Can this be prepared in a rice cooker on the brown rice setting
Answer: My rice cooker has an oatmeal setting. I made "farrotto" using twice as much liquid as farro for 35 minutes on the oatmeal setting with an occasional stir.
Question: Should it be covered while cooking
Answer: Hello Renee, I would cook it like oatmeal. For the creamiest texture, put grain (I grind it first) in COLD water, 2 parts water to one part grain. Stirring almost constantly over med heat until thick and some lava type bubbles appear at the surface. Cover and let set for about 10 mins. I have been making bread with ground farro. Challenging as far as texture goes but GOSH, the flavor is 5 stars. My 28 yr old VERY picky eater, loves it.......shocking!I also find that any cooked grain tastes richer the second day after refrigeration. So many tricks to the trade ay?
Question: Will this grain sprout
Answer: don't know but will gladly send you like 50 grains by mail and you can experiment. Just leave me an address.

User questions & answers

Question: Is is a product of USA
Answer: Bob’s Red Mill is an employee owned business located in the USA. I am not sure where they source their grains from.
Question: I've been told that you need a special machine to get the hulls off, to make it edible. Does anyone know if this is true
Answer: HI Amazon customer: Here is what the manufacturer says: Discover the whole grain goodness of amaranth. This tiny "grain"-actually a seed-has a rich history dating back 8,000 years, when it was first cultivated in Mesoamerica. The ancient Aztecs relied on amaranth as a food staple and used it in religious rituals, earning it the names "super grain of the Aztecs" and "golden grain of the gods." In the 1500s, Spanish conquistadors attempted to outlaw amaranth in an effort to convert and control the Aztecs. Lucky for us, their efforts proved unsuccessful due to amaranth's amazing ability to grow quickly and thrive in less-than-ideal soil, making it nearly impossible to extinguish.Amaranth is a gluten-free food and a source of complete protein-it contains all the essential amino acids, including lysine, which is lacking in most grains. High in fiber and a good source of magnesium and iron, Amaranth is a spectacular addition to your diet. This little powerhouse is perfect for gluten free and vegan diets.Amaranth has an earthy, nutty flavor and can be cooked and used in breads to give a boost of nutrition and a crunchy texture. Try popped amaranth for a unique breakfast cereal or to make the Mexican candy, Alegria. Amaranth can also be cooked as porridge, used to make polenta or added to soups. If you like gardening, try planting a few amaranth seeds in your yard. The amaranth flower is truly breathtaking. Don't plant too many, however, or you may see your garden become an amaranth crop.Go to bobsredmill.com and check out their recipes for Amaranth. They have some great ones. You'll see you just use it from the bag; it's ready to cook with; no hulling needed. Happy shopping,VickiWorld Organics, Direct
Question: Is Amaranth gluten free
Answer: Hi Dandylion, Yes. Amaranth is labeled Gluten Free. Bob's Red Mill Products labeled Gluten Free are batch tested in their quality control laboratory. They use an ELISA Gluten Assay test to confirm that the product is gluten free.
Question: Did anyone try planting these seeds. Bobs Redmill site says you can. Just wanted to confirm
Answer: Hi Rakesh, you might want to call Bob's to make sure the seeds will germinate and haven't had some process done to them that prevents germination.VickiWorld Organics, Direct

User questions & answers

Question: Is this healthier than plain oatmeal
Answer: The mix of whole grains adds significantly to nutritional value over the single whole grain oatmeal. I use the 10-grain as an additive to oatmeal about a 50-50 mix.
Question: Is this crushed like rolled oats? Can I nuke it like Quaker oats? Takes more time
Answer: Not like rolled oats, kind of like cream of wheat but with more substance. Could probably be nuked but would take more time and water. It's a 3:1 ratio on the stove.
Question: I purchased a 6 pack of these for $21.41 on Amazon and now 1 is $14.99 (over 4x increase)... what is the threshold for pandemic price gouging
Answer: For the record, the price for a 25 oz. package is $19.93 in January 2021. I recommend checking your local grocery store.
Question: Why is this $19.88 on Amazon and $3.50 on Walmart? Price gouging
Answer: To answer your question. The Walmart price is offered by a “chain” that has HUGE buying power and can force suppliers to discount their price. When the product is offered on Amazon it iOS offered by (many) sellers whose sole interest by be in merely making a profit. Yet, Amazon does have many suppliers (sellers) of this. Focus on the best price & avoid people who are inflating the price (of common products) just so they can “get your gold”.

Answer: The ingredients are: Whole Grain Oats, Whole Grain Brown Rice, Corn, Soy Beans, Whole Grain Millet, Whole Grain Sorghum, Oat Bran, Sunflower Seeds, and Flaxseed. The nutrition label is available if you scroll over the images!
Question: Why can i buy this direct from bob's red mill for on $3.95 and you want almost $26.00 for one 25oz package
Answer: Yes you can find it for less money. If you can!
Question: When this product is used to make bread, are the bits of grain noticeable In the appearance and texture of the bread or does it blend in
Answer: Whenever using cereal grains with baking - the less processed the cereal grain, the more it remains intact in the finished bake. It is usually most noticeable on the tops of loaves; however, like using chopped nuts or seeds in baking...you will see some throughout the bake as well. As with everything else you bake - some partakers will be enthralled by this wonderful hodge-podge of nutritional goodness; however, some partakers - especially those who are "food texture-centric," will not care for it. To wit, Papi [me] loves the textures - while Nana [my 4-decade wife] does not. I have replaced ALL store-bought breads in our home - based on that Papi & Nana model. Keep on baking! - Papi

User questions & answers

Question: how many ounces in total for this purchase..is it 4 x 32oz
Answer: no
Question: What is the expiration date
Answer: That depends on your specific order. We have kept these unopened bags in a cool dark place for over two months. There is no oil in oats, so nothing to go rancid. Once opened, we keep the oats in a sealed storage bin. I imagine they could go stale like any product exposed to air. All in all, oats are a hearty grain. Given the limitations on some of these products due to Covid, we are buying in advance to make sure not to run out.
Question: Are these gluten free
Answer: Bob’s Red Mill also has a gluten free. The amount of gluten in rolled oats is so miniscule that it depends on the certifying organization as to whether or not they are actually gluten free. In America these would be considered gluten free, but in I think Australia or New Zealand they are not.
Question: Am I understanding the quantity correctly? 4-32oz bags, equaling 8lbs total
Answer: I asked myself the same thing and yes 8lbs. It’s not a typo it’s just a good price.

User questions & answers

Question: How is this better for you than brown rice? Thanks
Answer: Based on the shape of the berries, it actually is spelt... Emmer has a more elongated shape. On top of that, italians usually label all 3 of them as farro...
Question: How long does this take to cook on stove top
Answer: There is no expiration date on package. I am using the third of four packages that have been on the shelf for at least four months.
Question: Where was this farro produced
Answer: It is a grain, grown in Italy. I did not think that farmed products, that are not cooked or prepared, would be kosher certified.
Question: which grain is used? spelt (triticum spelta), emmer (triticum dicoccum), and einkorn (triticum monococcum
Answer: No. The farro that you eat has been harvested from the mature plants. You have to buy farro seeds for planting.

The Red Mill’s Beginnings

Bob's journey began in the mid '60s after coming across a book about an old stone-grinding flour mill. Unable to shake his vision of operating a flour mill that provided healthy and nutritious food, Bob tirelessly searched for his own set of usable millstones. With a little time and persistence, Bob and his wife found several sets of millstones and began their first mill in Redding, California.

In 1978 the couple left the mill and retired to Oregon City, but fate stepped in one afternoon when Bob came across an old mill that was for sale in nearby Milwaukie, Oregon. A few months later, Bob’s new mill was producing stone ground flours and cereals for local customers.

They enjoyed much success until 1988, when an arsonist’s fire tragically destroyed the building. Never one to back away from a challenge, Bob worked to build the business again from scratch, creating the Bob’s Red Mill you know and love today.

Our beautiful stone grinding mills are much like the ones used during early Roman times. Our quartz millstones ensure the most nutritious parts of the whole grain remain, so we can pack wholesome goodness right into your bag.

Because the millstones grind at a slow speed and cool temperature, the inherent nutrients and flavor of our grains are preserved, a production 'secret' that allows us to seal in the freshness and bring you wholesome, quality foods, just as nature intended.

User questions & answers

Question: There is a question here re:sugar where many say no sugar or raisins add a little sugar; but package pic shows 5g sugar/ 1/4 cup serving...am I wrong
Answer: 5 g sugar per 1/4 cup serving is what's on the package. The ingredients list doesn't show any added sugar but does include date crumbles and raisins.
Question: Why does it state 1:2 cup ratio on bag for hot; 1:1 ratio in description for cereal:water amounts? Also, 40 oz bags state 1:1 ratio. Which is it
Answer: I've only made this hot once, and as much as it is my all-time favorite cereal, we really prefer it cold with yogurt, blueberries and milk. Thought it was kind of boring hot. On the package it says that a serving is 1/4 cup which works for me, but my husband eats 1/2 cup with aforementioned yogurt, blueberries and milk. BTW, the cookie recipe on the side of the package makes fabulous cookies.
Question: Is there an expiration date on this item
Answer: I don't have a bag now, but I would think like any other food product there would be an expiration date on the bag. It may have a longer shelf life. Sorry, I couldn't give you the answer.
Question: Is this made with GMO ingredients
Answer: According to Bob's Red Mill's site, their products are GMO free. See below link. https://www.bobsredmill.com/non-gmo

Bob’s Red Mill Old Country Style Muesli

Muesli was invented over a century ago by Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner, a man who was way ahead of his time when it came to understanding the health benefits of whole grains. He knew that good food is the best medicine, so he created a blend of hearty whole grains, fruit and nuts to nourish his patients. Inspired by Dr. Bircher-Benner’s creation, Bob’s Red Mill Old County Style Muesli is made with a combination of five flavorful rolled whole grains—oats, wheat, barley, rye and triticale. Dates and raisins add sweetness; sunflower seeds, almond slices and walnut pieces add crunch; and flaxseed meal gives an extra nutritional boost. For a wholesome breakfast, eat muesli as a cold cereal with milk or yogurt. For a hearty hot meal, cook muesli on the stovetop like oatmeal.

Spiced Carrot Cake Muesli Energy Poppers

  1. In a food processor, combine all ingredients except the muesli and blend together until a sticky dough forms.
  2. Measure 1 cup of muesli in a medium bowl, then add the carrot mixture. Using your hands, mix together the muesli and carrot mixture.
  3. Once your dough is well mixed, take about 1 tablespoon of the mixture and roll it into a ball. Place on a plate or baking sheet, and then finish rolling the rest of the dough out. Refrigerate for 1 hour, then enjoy!

User questions & answers

Question: Is this producr non GMO
Answer: Not sure. The package says it's gluten free, and free of preservatives and chemical additives. I checked their website and didn't see anything about GMO. You might want to contact them - www.bobsredmill.com or call them at 1-800-349-2173 Pacific Standard Time (they're in Oregon). Hope this helps.
Question: Can anyone tell me how big the grain is on this? The bread recipe I have calls for a fine to medium grain
Answer: This is a fine to medium grain!
Question: What does Ala stand for, besides Alabama
Answer: ala is another word for bulgur wheat. you can look up recipes for ala pilaf, for example, and the main ingredient will be bulgur wheat. there is even a packaged version of bulgur wheat in a small red box, and the name on the front says Ala. Usually served as a side dish, but you can cook it and add it to bread recipes. The Bob's Red Mill product IS the same thing as ala. Not sure what language the word comes from, but my guess is Arabic.
Question: Are these as big as rice grains when cooked? Is there bulgur wheat that cooks whiter/ in a lighter color than this one
Answer: Bulgar is a steam cooked wheat product. The chopped grains are smaller than rice and do NOT need to be cook. Should not be cooked---MUSHY! There is a lighter bulgur---made from white wheat rather than red. My preference for preparation is the following: Soak a cup of dry bulgur in enough lime juice to cover with some olive oil and a teaspoon of salt on top. Let rest in the refrigerator---if it starts to look dry in a couple of hours put a small amount of water. Stop adding liquid when the grains are still firm, but soft enough to chew. This is an excellent base for any salad ingredients. Also it provides a superior tabouli base for a pile of chopped parsley, grated cucumber, and tomatoes. Add the grain to the fresh vegetables and eat, rather than the typical method of mixing up all the tabouli at once where the fresh veggies get soft if not eaten in a day or two. Prepared bulgur in this way will last weeks in the frig---without veggies of course.

Question: Will this work in a yogurt parfait in place of the classic granola I use now. I'm looking for a crunchy, toasted flavor without added sweeteners
Answer: This grain can break you teeth if you have soft teeth. I baked some bread and my father broke his crown off. Lesson learned: cook the grain first before using it in bread, granola or baked goods. It is a very delicious grain for breads or granola, it just needs to be steeped in hot liquid for 30 or more minutes first
Question: Is this product easy to use
Answer: Yes, very easy.
Question: price is ridiculous !!! should be around 3 dollars a bag, what's up
Answer: might be the Covid19. mine got destroyed via Shipping so I never got to try it. I was trying to replace Quakers Multigrain hot Cereal which I can't find anymore.
Question: What are the 5 grains in this cereal
Answer: Oats, wheat, rye, barley & flaxseed. This is a very good & healthy mix .

At scale, these small differences in product size and weight lead to significant carbon emission reductions.
