According to the info on the battery door,it takes a AG13/LR44 button battery. Looks like you would need a very small Phillips screwdriver to open it. Never had to replace any of them yet. (I have 2). Since there are 3 additional screws on the back of the stopwatch to hold it together,I doubt if a small child would even know there is a battery in there or how to get it out.

Hermit crabs need an average depth of at least 6 inches of substrate in order to bury themselves & molt. - You also need room for 2 dishes of water (each deep enough so that the crab can fully submerge itself)- both dechlorinated; 1 fresh, 1 aquarium salt. - No room for food or climbing or friends or an array of extra shells! - The majority of substrate materials (like playsand) will come right out of these sides. - Heat & Humidity are extremely important- if your temp. (~80°) & humidity (~75-80) are not maintained ALL the time, your crab will slowly suffocate (they have modified gills & breath the moisture in the air).
