User questions & answers

Question: Do I have to pay an activation fee, if I already have a Roku account
Answer: NO!!! I have been with Roku for 10-15 years & I've NEVER been charged an activation fee. I set up my new Express this past Friday 07/31/2020. When the screen came up, it gave me an activation code. All I had to do was go to the Roku website & log-in. Then I clicked on "Activate" in the upper right of the screen. A box came up asking for my activation code. I entered the code & in less than 30 seconds I saw the "Welcome to Roku" come across my TV screen. Any chance that you owed Roku for past charges??? During the log-in process, I did notice that they had a disclaimer that "Roku never charges to activate their boxes". I hope you have it cleared up by now!!! Since several people have asked this question, .I'm wondering IF some sellers aren't trying to scam buyers. I never call the 800 number that comes with any product. I go to their website to get the advertised toll free number. I set up my account completely online. The only thing I needed was my Roku username & password as well as my username & password for every premium channel that I belonged to like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc
Question: Do you need a smart tv to use it
Answer: We use our Roku Express (purchased in 2018) on a very old tv with no HDMI port with an RCA to HDMI converter that supports PAL/NTSC that we purchased on Amazon for about $12. We plugged in our RCA cable into one side converter and then to the TV, (It is the 3 pronged red, yellow, and white ended cable we used to use to connect our VCRs to the TV back in the 1990s that we never threw away-ha ha!). Amazon carries RCA cables for less than $6.
Question: Can i use this with a samsung smart tv
Answer: I have 2 Samsung Smart TVs--bought in 2015 and 2016. I want Disney+ but they are too old to support that app. So, for me, it is worth buying a Roku to get it.
Question: I have a lg tv but for some reason the hdmi ports don't work, can i make it work with the av port
Answer: Yes you can. Try https://www.amazon.com/Converter-Tackston-Composite-Nintendo-Integrated/dp/B07R6857Q7, It worked perfect for my old big screen.

User questions & answers

Question: So, it's a Tivo
Answer: No. There is a reason the Fire TV Recast (this product) does not have an HDMI in/out port, a Cable CARD port or many of the additional ports which a TiVo has. TiVo devices have a slot in the back for a cable card which you can get from your provider. This allows for unscrambling of whatever service they provide per their agreement with you which may include package lineups like Disney (not included in Hulu), sports, science and movies. TiVo previously had an agreement with Comcast/Xfinity allowing users in some markets to access their OnDemand though not any longer. Depending on which TiVo device you purchase they have different storage sizes and numbers of tuners which you can then pair with TiVo minis for other TVs to access and control the DVR. Tuner number determines how many shows can be recorded at the same time on ANY model of DVR. If you have 6 tuners for example like my TiVo has, you can record 6 shows at the same time. You cannot watch a 7th show but you can watch any of the 6 being recorded. Having a mini attached takes up a tuner space so I have one mini meaning my DVR can only record 5 shows at the same time. TiVo uses all of the common apps ranging from Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video through YouTube (and more) for you to search in addition to your cable or OTA TV connection. It can ONLY record from your cable or OTA connection and does not support satellite providers. You can view your DVR contents from your mobile device at any time. There is a monthly fee just for the TiVo service - for each box/mini you have unless you opt to pay the lifetime fee. This covers maintenance (which this Amazon box does not have). Notice that, as I said, the Amazon Fire Recast has no HDMI port. That's because it's only compatible with an Amazon Fire TV! If Your TV is not an Amazon Fire TV you have to purchase an Amazon Fire Stick just to use this! This device comes in a limited storage and tuner size while you can get a large TiVo and even expand upon that yourself if you need to. I did! Having a cable card slot on a TiVo might not seem like much of you are a cord cutter, we don't have any TV service anymore, but when we did it saved us about $30 monthly in rental fees for 2 boxes from our provider about 2 years ago. Prime Video does have a lot of content but it's easy to burn through and let's all be honest: this device relies heavily on other apps to provide content Netflix, Hulu, Philo, Sling, etc are all where we go! This device does NOT record from these apps. Keep in mind as well: if you buy the 2 tuner option you can record 2 shows and that is all. You cannot watch another show. If you buy another Fire Stick for a different TV, that takes up a tuner space. The Amazon box is a more expensive, limited featured, small storage OTA box. TiVo has been around for many years and their boxes have more features which are all compatible with TVs instead of "Amazon Fire".
Question: What do I have to have/do (equipment-wise) to have a setup that has live and pre-taped shows to get close to what cable provides
Answer: So for the TL/DR: Antenna, DVR, a few RG-6 cables, and TV, depending on your set up and location booster, splitter, terminators, and more RG-6 cables. The hard part to answer your question is what kind of cable TV do you have: how many channels can you watch and record at once? do you have premium channels like Bravo, HBO, or other cable-only channels? and how many TVs is it hooked to? First thing to understand is that not all cable channels are also broadcast OTA (over the air) AND not all OTA channels are available in all areas. I would first do an internet search of something like antennaweb.org or just google for what OTA channels are available in my area. Second part is the Antenna, you will need a good antenna and the choices are too numerous and application-specific (indoor, outdoor, directional, omnidirectional as a few examples) and you may need a booster depending on your location from the transmitting towers and splitters depending on how many devices you will be watching or recording the OTA channels on. You will need cable, Typically RG-6, to run from antenna to signal booster, to device and/or TVs. If you are using a really old TV or computer to watch you will also need a digital tuner (this is sort of rare case, so probably not). To record TV shows you will need a DVR (digital video recorder) and most have built-in storage with the option to expand onto some kind of external storage device this is where you get the limit of how many hours you can keep. The number of show you can watch and record at one time is limited by the number of tuners, most TV after around 2007 have at least one digital tuner built in, so you can use a splitter and run one cable from your antenna to your DVR and another cable to your TV allowing you to watch one show while your DVR records as many shows at one time as it has built-in tuners. The recast has a 2 tuner and a 4 tuner model. So using the above example you could watch one TV show live and record an additional 2 or 4 at the same time. If you use a 4-way splitter and only use 3 of the 4 splitters you will also need terminators or plugs, think of it as an open water faucet, you don't want any open holes in your lines. Each DVR has it's own kind of output type, my Tivo has HDMI, the recast use wifi to transmit to other fire capable products, and some rare and older ones will output to RG-6 meaning if your TV only has one RG-6 input you will HAVE to use that to connect your TV to your DVR to watch what is on your DVR. So OTA DVRs get their signals from the RG-6 and depending on make, model, and design can have one or multiple of several different output options to send it to your TV.
Question: Will Amazon make improvements and fix issues via updates on this device or should I wait on the next generation
Answer: Someone has commented about a possible SW or Firmware fix for ATSC 3.0. I doubt this is possible since it would involve new hardware, yet, all of those TVs we have, will now require a CONVERTER BOX to operate. I doubt they would have a converter box for this RECAST. Mine arrived today (10-2020) but I believe it will be EOL as the ATSC 3.0 standard becomes more readily available. I am looking for specs now. If anyone knows, please share! PS. Probably worth 2-3 years of free TV to me...Looking for a hardware version now (after I plug it in and get it rolling).
Question: What is the highest recording and playback resolution? 720p, 1080i, 4k uhd
Answer: The key problem is that the resolution is not consistent during playback. When there is a lot of action on the screen, for some reason the Recast scales down the resolution to an unwatchable 360p. Rewinding and re-watching can sometimes help, but not always. This is over a high-bandwidth wifi router. I can stream in any 4k show from the internet to my Firestick with no resolution issues, but the Recast is somehow unable to transmit at full 720p resolution on my own network! Hardwiring does not resolve the issue - it must be some overly cautious internal bandwidth limitation. I would love for Amazon to resolve this, because otherwise the recast is good!

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the
Answer: Yes
Question: Can you use this to stream my cable to TV's in other rooms
Answer: Disregard some of these mistaken answers. I have 4 Roku Streaming Stick+ devices in my home. All of them are setup to access all channels available from my Comcast Xfinity account! I also have a dual 2.4 & 5G wireless router and can connect the sticks to either band! I'm purchasing a 5th one today for my bathroom TV!
Question: will the remote work with the stick behind the tv
Answer: I believe the remote works over WiFi so line of sight is not needed. I have my stick behind my TV and it works fine. If it's too close to the HDMI connector on the TV, the signal may be corrupted and the remote will work intermittently. If so, Roku will send you an extension to move the stick 3-4 inches away from the HDMI connector which solves the problem. The remote will control your TV volume and on/off by Infrared so you need line of sight from the remote to your TV. The Roku can turn on your TV automatically, so I can just hit the Home button on the Roku remote and both the TV and the Roku will come on. So I use the Roku for everything (TV off/on, volume, channel tuning) and don't normally need to touch the TV controller.
Question: How is this powered
Answer: So glad I have MHL ports on my TV's. So my streaming stick is self powering without taking up HDMI ports or the USB port.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it work off of a hotspot
Answer: Yes, but will be slow and burn thru data.
Question: Whats the difference between fire stick and fire stick light
Answer: Only the Remotes are different. Go with the Lite and use the $10 for a better Remote, or a Second Remote.
Question: Can i use a firestick without the internet
Answer: You can absolutely screen mirror WITHOUT wifi. I tried to screen mirror with the roku, chromecast, our smart TVs and several other devices without a wifi connection with no luck. Unbelievably, the firestick allows you to screen mirror with nothing more than your phone and the Fire Stick. Hold down the home button until a prompt comes up allowing you to mirror your device. You don't need internet at all to mirror your device. I spent a year trying to do just that because we didn't have internet where we were. I would download movies and shows on our phone while in town where our phone had a signal then play them at home where we had zero service.
Question: Does this allow for downloads from unknown sources
Answer: Yeah, FireOS (Amazon's modified version of Android) does allow you to sideload apps from unknown sources. You can download any .apk file you want using any browser you want, and use any file manager you want to open and install it. If you happen to sideload an app not made for a TV, I recommend using a Bluetooth mouse to navigate it since d-pad controls aren't the best for mobile apps. Happy sideloading!

Answer: You can adjust the picture quality to compensate for slower speeds to avoid consistent buffering. This is accessed through a "secret menu". Press home 5 times, then rewind 3 times, then fast forward 2 times. Set to SD or experiment with what works.
Question: Can this be used with an hdmi-equipped pc monitor? if so, is there a way to get local tv channels? the weather channel? trying to help mom
Answer: There is a weather channel available from the applications menu/no charge. Different subscription offers provide channels for broadcast TV. The offering may different due to geography. In Oregon, If you get a 30 MPS internet from Spectrum, you can down load the application for a wide offering of local and cable type TV channels- free. You will need to buy a router, they supply the modem. The internet with programing is $54/month.. Shop around for that part. Roku with its top 2 newer units is fantastic, been using from the older style for years.
Question: Can u watch YouTube tv on it
Answer: Yes you can. You Tube is an app or channels that you can add to your channel list along with 1300+ other channels. Go to the Roku channel page and add, no issues. User questions & answers

Question: Can I pair bluetooth headphones directly to the box or do I have to use that terrible app for private listening
Answer: Hi there, Bluetooth® Streaming on the 2020 Ultra allows for users to cast their favorite music, podcasts, and more to their TV with a connected device, such as a phone or tablet. You'll still use the Roku mobile app to enable private listening on your own wireless headphones. Simply open the app, plug in or pair your headphones to your phone or tablet, and enable private listening on the digital remote interface. Just look for the headphones icon and you're all set!
Question: If I get the ultra, is there anything else I need to have/get over and above what’s in the box
Answer: Setup was very easy, just plug, play and follow the onscreen prompts. You will need a WiFi/Wired connection to the Internet and a computer to setup your account. While their are plenty of free streaming channels you will have to pay a monthly fee for some premium services. I'm a novice when it comes to streaming and still learning but when my Xfinity/Comcast bill hit $200 fir TV only I decided to start looking around for a more inexpensive option.
Question: Is the remote for this ir or rf? such that if i mount the roku out of sight will it still work
Answer: Hi there, the 2020 Ultra comes with a Roku enhanced “point-anywhere” remote (or enhanced remote for short). Connected over a wireless network, it does not need to be pointed directly at your Roku® streaming player or Roku TV™ when you press buttons. This allows you to install your Roku device behind your wall-mounted TV or another nearby, out-of-sight location. Hope this helps!
Question: How do i know if i am watching something in dolby vision as compared to hdr from the previous roku ultra
Answer: Forrest: Netflix offering a program in Dolby Vision does not mean the device is outputting it as such. You would need confirmation from your display. There have been a number of reports of this Roku actually not outputting DolbyVision ... or even HDR on programs which have it available. I can confirm such issues. My tv confirms HDR and Dolby Vision if I use the smart tv's own apps but not if it comes from the Roku.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use with a tv on my phone and tabet
Answer: IF YOU talking about miracast (mirror android on tv), then yes. if you referring to airplay (mirroring iphone on tv), then not right now. it use to be able to. you will need to try airplay apps on the amazon app store such as AirScreen works great and free with advertisements or AirReceiver which cost a little
Question: Does the cube work with Ring
Answer: I have the first generation Cube and hate the hting. It has connection issues with my Ring camera as do all FireTVs, I have the 1st generation Fire TV, the 2nd generation FireStick, te 4k FIreStick which is the better way to go, and the 1st generation Cube. I know on the software now there is a mic icon to push on the screen to tlk outside. The problem is it takes too long for the camera to connect with any of the FireTV devices, I have a Show, a Spot, and a Show 5 and they connect almost instantly but the FIRETV devices often time out before they connect. It isn't my WiFi as I have a Google WiFi mesh system with solid connection anywhere inside and basically within a 300' feet outside of my place. You want to see how good these things are? I just looked and they were only offering $0.99 cents for a trade in for a Cube that cost $89 on sale when I bought it, and $5 for a second generation Dot I only paid $25. That right their alone tells you these Cubes are garbage.
Question: Can i connect the cube directly to my internet router? hardwire, not wifi
Answer: I'm late, but thought I chime in. You'll never get over 500 mbps of Ethernet speed into a USB port for connection on any device. USB port won't allow over that amount. Speeds above 500 will need a straight Ethernet through Ethernet connection. Amazon always gives you the 10/100 adapter, but you can get a third party one that will give you 10/100/1000. For instance UGREEN adapters can give you 10/100/1000, and you can plug that into the Cube. This will also show you that you'll only get about 500 or so speed when you do a speed test (even if you have 1GB speed) because the connection is still through that USB port. My opnion though... You only need 150 - 200 mbps for pretty decent streaming, especially if your hardwired into your router ( I am, and throughout my house ) Consistent speed on your bandwith gets rid of the buffering...not really more speed. Some wifi signals are up and down due to interference...changing the speed...and creating buffering while streaming.
Question: Can this be controlled through another Alexa device
Answer: Yes, I have my Cube in my living room hooked up to my TV there. In my bedroom at the other end of my house I have an Echo dot. I can be in my bedroom and say "Alexa turn on the TV" and Alexa will say okay and then turn on the TV in the livingroom that the Cube is hooked to. See people tend to get things a little confused when it comes to Alexa and the devices it works with. The Cube and other Alexa devices are just listening posts but those listening posts are all tied together in the Alexa app, so when you give a command to any one of them they can turn on anything that's hooked into the Alexa/Echo network, even when the Echo device you give the command to is not the one connected to the device you are trying to turn on with that command.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the operating system is
Answer: According to Extreme Tech's 2013 article, it runs a hybrid of Android and Google TV, though official announcement from Google say it runs a modified ChromeOS.
Question: Do you have to have an iternet connection or can you use it from cell phone system data
Answer: You can use cell phone system data, but you can't stream from the same device that is providing the hotspot. That is to say, if your phone is emitting your wifi hotspot, you will need a different device connected to that wifi hotspot to control the stream. This is just limitations from how the streaming in the apps work, and is super unfortunate, but I have streamed successfully using cell phone data and a second device (tablet or laptop) connected to the phone wifi hotspot controlling the chromecast. Laptop -> Phone Hotspot
Question: Can one cast straight to a epson projector with a hdmi port
Answer: It did not work with my Epson printer. :(
Question: does it have to have a power cord connected to an electrical outlet
Answer: It has to be connected to power but you can use the usb cable that comes with it to connect to the back of your TV as long as your TV has an open USB slot. Or, you can use the power supply that comes with it to connect to an outlet to power up the Chromecast device.

User questions & answers

Question: I Can conect usb seagate external hard drive 5tb watch the movie
Answer: USB sticks definitely work and I imagine as long as the external drive is powered it should also work.
Question: Anyone try Disney plus Atmos yet
Answer: Ok...just thought I would share this though I think its more of a 'work around' than an actual permanent solution to the problem. Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 software version 8.2.0 (latest) Disney+ app version 1.10 (latest) Still no HDR nor Atmos available when trying to play content that should support it. Only HD and 5.1 available. But the fix and/or work around was this. Go to: Settings --> Device Preferences --> Display & Sound --> Resolution It was set at the top option: "4k 59.940Hz (default)". I had set it to the third option: "4k 23.976Hz HDR10 Ready" Once I set this option, I was able to get the Disney+ content in HDR and Dolby Atmos without issue. However the reason I think this might be more of a work around than a fix is because my Sony XBR75X800G 'should' be able to support 4k 59.940Hz. It doesn't have Dolby Vision (though I wish it did. :( ) but does support HDR10. Anyway, hope this little piece of information is helpful to some. If anyone has any additional info as to why this is or anything new that might be a better solution, I would love to hear it. Thanks!

Answer: The new “ Pro” version has the same 3GB RAM with 16Gb internal storage as the previous Shield TV model but includes dual USB 3.0 ports to add external storage. The previous “Pro” model with 500GB internal HDD appears to be gone now.
Question: Does netflix now supports dv and atmos? does it support dv when playing local files via plex/kodi etc? also does youtube supports hdr now
Answer: Netflix on the new SHIELDs (2019) now supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The new SHIELDs also support playback of local Dolby Vision content using Photos & Videos, Kodi, and Plex YouTube on the new SHIELDs supports 4K video, but does not support HDR at this time.
