Q: Can you use the RCWL-0516 with an ESP8266? Or will you get random false positive results?
A: I've done a short term test with the ESP8266 on a NodeMCU board. It seems to work just fine. The ESP greater Version 12-E is shielded and is FCC certified. So it should, by definition, not interfere with other electronics. However, one viewer reported random false positive results on a long shot.
Q: Is the water in the human body responsible for the detection?
A: Probably. I tested it with one empty and one water filled bottle. And even with a cat. And it seems that the bigger the object the further away it can be detected.

Answer: | I imagine it would. It picks up small animals like cats or even a half-bottle of water. If you want to test how far and "small" of an object fill a bottle of water little by little, with a sensor setup. Continue to fill the bottle of water until the sensor sees it. This will determine "how much water" an animal needs inside of it to be detectable at a certain distance. For a human, the distance is 4-5 meters for fairly reliable detection (smaller movements are LESS noticed, like fingers or turning your neck). Somewhere between 3-4 meters is where this thing really shines, almost no human movement goes undetected.. fingers, slightest movement of the neck, breathing. I would confidently recommend that these would detect small rodents. |

Answer: | Both sides should work the same. Try rotating the device and try again. The reflective environment is a real factor. |

Answer: | The device has no relay, so no dry contact. But, you can easily have the output go to the base of a switching transistor or the gate of a mosfet to switch your load on or off. FYI .... if you intend to use this outdoors, don’t bother. It needs the reflective surfaces of a indoor environment to operate correctly. |
