14 best digital radio scanners
Digital radio scanners are electronic devices used to monitor and listen to various radio frequencies, including those used by public safety agencies, emergency services, amateur radio operators, and other radio communication systems. These scanners are popular among hobbyists, enthusiasts, and professionals in fields like security surveillance and emergency response.
Here are some key features and aspects of digital radio scanners:
Frequency Coverage: Digital radio scanners can cover a wide range of frequencies, typically from low-frequency bands (like VHF and UHF) to higher frequency bands (such as the trunked radio systems used by public safety agencies). They can tune into a variety of signals, including analog and digital transmissions.
Analog and Digital: Older analog scanners could only receive analog signals, but modern digital radio scanners can decode digital modulation types such as P25, DMR, NXDN, and others. This makes them capable of monitoring both conventional and trunked digital radio systems.
Trunking Systems: Many public safety agencies and organizations use trunking radio systems for efficient communication. Digital scanners are equipped to follow trunking protocols, allowing users to listen to conversations on these systems.
Channel Memory: Scanners often have extensive channel memory to store and organize a large number of frequencies, including alpha-numeric tags for easy identification.
Search and Scan Modes: Scanners typically offer various scanning modes, including searching for active frequencies and scanning stored channels. Users can program their scanners to scan specific channels or groups of channels.
Close Call Feature: Some scanners have a "Close Call" feature that automatically detects and tunes in to nearby transmissions, even if they aren't stored in memory.
Signal Reception: The quality of reception can vary based on factors like antenna type, location, and signal strength. External antennas can enhance reception in areas with weak signals.
Programming and Software: Most modern scanners can be programmed via a computer and specialized software, which simplifies the process of adding or updating frequencies and systems.
Recording and Playback: Some scanners have built-in recording capabilities, allowing users to record and play back transmissions for reference or documentation purposes.
Legal Considerations: It's essential to be aware of the legal restrictions and regulations regarding scanner use in your region. Some jurisdictions may limit or prohibit the monitoring of certain frequencies or use of scanners for unauthorized purposes.
Digital radio scanners can be valuable tools for hobbyists interested in monitoring radio communications, but they are also used by professionals in fields such as security, emergency management, and law enforcement for real-time information gathering and situational awareness. However, it's crucial to use these devices responsibly and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work with 900 mhz |
Answer: | Hey Drakkenfyre barring any manufacturing anomalies the UV-5R accessories, including batteries and the BL-5L, should be compatible with the 5x3. Essentially they are the same radio outside, just different electronics/firmware inside. If you are unlucky to get one of the bad batteries visit the Miklor.com web site for all information about the radio, and this http://kj4ajp.mambm.com/BL5L/ for repairing the battery to make it fit. Hope this helps. |
Question: | We cannot pick anything up. All static. Occasionally fire department. What's the problem |
Answer: | This radio uses all the battery options and accessories that fit the UV-5R or the BF-F8HP. So yes. You can use both the AAA and the AA battery eliminators as well as the extended batteries.Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can I pick up police frequencies with this? I live in a high crime and would like to listen in to the chatter for pure entertainment purposes |
Answer: | All radio transmitters and some other emitters must have FCC certification. Commercial and public service require Part 90 certification. Other services like FRS and GMRS fall under other parts of the rules. As part of the certification process the FCC issues an FCC ID number for each design of transmitter. I have used the FCC ID to determine the frequency range and modulation type of radios before by doing a Google search of the number. There is also a search page on the FCC site. The only radio service exempt from these regulations is Amateur Radio. Ham radio operators are directly responsible for their emissions and have demonstrated sufficient knowledge of the rules and electronics by passing an exam. Most of the Chinese radios are therefore marketed to Ham radio operators since most do not have any FCC certification. They are also not legal to use on commercial, FRS and GMRS frequencies unless they have the FCC certification number or a sticker with the numbers on them. The UV-5X3 is a perfect example. The sticker under the battery affixed to the radio calls it an Amateur radio and there is no reference to FCC certification or ID. There are some of the UV-5R radios that have a part 90 certification sticker on them but they are mostly the older models like the UV-5RV2+. If programmed correctly so the end user can not operate the radio on frequencies they are not authorized to use they can be used for commercial and public service. They are not certified and are not legal to use for FRS and GMRS even with the part 90 certification. |
Question: | DO YOU NEED AN OUTSIDE ANTENA |
Answer: | We have a 100watt repeater (before 2013) for local / regional and achieve 200 miles every day, and a few long haul repeaters that are 1.5KW to backhaul between other repeaters and their base stations. We could use VoIP between repeaters, we are just blessed to have a mountaintop that we use, and just expanded as another liscense holder gave up their space, so we have another relay tower. For security I won't say where, but you likely have used it without knowing. So listen to everyone here and join your regional and national clubs. They fund 30-40-% of our operations. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it work good indoors a with a metal roof |
Answer: | You can use any rechargeable AA batteries for this radio. They can be purchased at Amazon or any place else that sell batteries. But there two things you need to know, one these batteries are not cheap. The other is you need to have the power cord to charge the batteries with. If you do not have this cord bring it to radio shack they will have it. Good luck with the radio. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this sds200 better than a radio shack pro-197 in shiawassee mi |
Answer: | No. This one is analog you would need digital |
Question: | Will the scanner pic up |
Answer: | Sounds like an antenna problem. Make sure the built-in antenna is securely connected. Also try an external antenna if that doesn't work. |
Question: | Does this come with the telescoping antenna |
Answer: | In 2018, most likely NO. This is an analog scanner. Most police and rescue are using digital systems these days. This isn't the fault of the scanner; you need to buy a digital scanner to hear police and rescue traffic in your area. This is the case in most of the USA in 2018. |
Question: | Does this scanner have a playback function? Sometimes I miss the calls and would like to play back a call |
Answer: | NO you do not need an "OUTSIDE" Antenna! In fact some may even DAMAGE your scanner! One Addition might be a Long Telescoping Antenna with a BNC Connection available on AMAZON that does in fact HELP your reception without damaging your scanner. Don't plan on "RUNNING AROUND" though when it is Connected and extended!! At this writing they go for $9.99 for 2. "Baosity 2pcs 7 Sections Telescopic Antennas w/BNC Connector for Portable Radio Scanner" I've used one on my RADIO SHACK Scanners for quite awhile! Happy Scanning!! |
Product description
"The BC355N is an affordable, basic mobile scanner that's great for home or mobile use, with 300 storable channels, coverage of all the ""action"" bands, convenient features like ""close call"" and program lock, and a wealth of powering options for different applications. Receives conventional channels on the following frequencies: (25-54 MHz) (108-174 MHz) (225-380 MHz) (406-512 MHz) (806-956 MHz) (excluding cellular telephone bands) "
- The Uniden Bearcat BC355N Mobile/Base Scanner is one of the most feature packed, user-friendly, entry level scanners available today. It can pick up analog receptions including 6 Service banks for monitoring Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Marine, Air, Weather, and CB frequencies.
- The BC355N features “Close Call RF Capture Technology,” which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters. This pre-programmed search makes it easier to find active frequencies and helps you stay on top of local happenings and emergencies in your area. 100 ch/sec Scan Speed (max)
- You can save up to 300 frequencies that are scanned along with the preset frequencies. So whenever you encounter a newly activated local frequency for any service category, you can add it to the bank for that category. This gives you quick access to the frequencies you want to hear.
- The BC355N comes complete with a backlit display, making it easier to read in low light conditions, along with AC adapter, a DC power cable and an automotive power outlet plug, giving you more options for supplying power at home or in your car. Frequency range for aircraft band is AM mode 8.33 STEP (kHz) at 108.0000, 136.9916(Lower and Upper)
- If you’re looking for an affordable way to jump into the world of scanners, the BC355N may be the right choice for you. (Please note: model BC355N is not suitable for trunking or digital radio system monitoring. If you live in an area where trunking or digital radio systems are used, you need to upgrade to a Uniden Digital model (“D” stands for Digital), such as models BCD996P2, BCD436HP, BCD536HP, BCD325P2, or HomePatrol-2.
User questions & answers
Question: | I know nothing about scanners in general. Is this a good scanner for beginners, and does it come with everything needed to set up and listen |
Answer: | In short, it is a good basic starter scanner. It will get you all analog transmissions from 27Mhz all the way up to 800Mhz.For a beginner scanner though, it can be a little tough to program manually. I learned through google searches and youtube videos. But if you want to just figure out what is going on around you, the scanner is preset to scanner different frequency stretches with the push of a button. So you can tell it to search just the standard police/fire/ems frequencies, or just the aircraft frequencies instead of manually programming.Oh, and yes this comes with enough accessories to permanently (wiring harness) or temporarily (cig lighter) set up in your car/truck or in your home as a base scanner (wall plug).Hope that helps.. |
Question: | What is the difference between the Uniden Scanner model number BC355N and the Uniden Scanner with model number BC355C |
Answer: | The 335N is just an updated model. The BC355C is no longer in production by Uniden instead the newer BC355N is the current production model. Both scanners are essentially the same aside from very minor technical specifications, just one is currently in production and the other isn't. |
Question: | what type of external antenna connector does it take I want to use it in my RV and I have a car type push in plug does that work |
Answer: | This is a helpful tool, now in most area police use a different type of radio. They use a p25 phase 2 to help prevent people from hearing them. The scanner for that kinda of radio comes at a high price! I work in EMS, I use this radio when I’m not working to try to avoid any road that has a MVA. I also go to calls sometimes if man power is requested |
Question: | does the scanner recieve annalog or digital transmissions |
Answer: | Perhaps the a new model was released under the same part number, because there are many answer from 2013 stating this is not a digital scanner and that this is not a trunking scanner, but today in 2017 it clearly is. The description lists P25 Phase I and II as well as X-TDMA. P25 is the digital radio standard for public safety. X-TDMA is the digital standard for multimedia data over radio. There is also a lengthy list of trunking technologies that are supported by this model. Amazon should clean up and delete the old misleading answers as they no longer apply. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I know this might sound stupid, but I am looking to get this for my Husband (a truck driver). What do sidebands do? When would you use this? Just wondering if I should get him this one or the 880... Thanks |
Answer: | If your husband wants or needs a radio capable of operating on sidebands, this is NOT radio for him. You would need to get the 980 model rather than this 880 model. Normally truckers operate on AM mode rather than sideband. However a few truckers who have Sideband capable radios will use sideband when they get further apart or can't get a good signal on AM. But the majority don't use sideband. |
Question: | can you use this CB in the house |
Answer: | Yes. You will require -1) An regulated power supply that converts AC electricity to DC. The voltage you want is a constant 13.8 VDC (not 12 volts, you won't get full power) and which can supply a minimum of 5 amps under load.2) Do NOT press the microphone button until all steps have been completed.3) You will need to mount an external CB antenna at least 9' above the roof line. If you use a mast, it must be guyed every 10' above the last (highest) physical attachement to the house.4) You will need to properly ground the antenna mast to a copper clad ground rod (between 4' and 10' long depending on soil conductivity for your location dry sand: bad: 10' / wet rich soil: excellent: 4')5) You will need to properly ground the chassis of the CB to the exact same point that the mast is grounded to on the grounding rod. This is the step that most radio noobies skip. DON'T skip it.6) It is highly suggested you purchase a ground shunt (static discharge) for your coax; and yes, connect it to the same exact spot on the grounding rod.7) Try and purchase the highest quality 50-ohm coax you can afford. If you can afford Timesmicrowave LMR-400, then that would be your best bet. Try not to use coax more then a few feet longer than you need, and beyond that always allow 2 extra feet for a 'drip loop' at the bottom just before where it comes into the house.8) Wrap the PL-259 connectors with weatherproof coax tape to seal the connections from rain/snow/condensation. If you want to overkill it, then put a shrink wrap tube over the top of the tape.9) Secure the coax GENTLY but securely every 3 feet along the mast. A UV-resistant piece of flexable plastic 2" wide by 6"long wrapped around the coax and the mast (all at once) and secured with UV-resistant tie-wraps would be a good idea.10) Calibrate your 980SSB's internal SWR meter and then check you antenna system SWR to make sure it is less than 1.5:1 (mine is 1.0:1, a perfect match). If required (never use beyond 3:1), 'trim' your antenna to get a better SWR (most don't require trimming).11) Sometimes a CB antenna will require a physical ground plane at the antenna base; but most of the times in a base setup, not.12) Re-read your Uniden BC980SSB manual to make sure nothing has been missed in your setup. |
Question: | Hello. I am looking to buy this for my husbands 1998 Jeep cherokee XJ..Will this be good for that? And also what other parts are needed |
Answer: | Hello, yes this is a nice radio that would be fine in that vehicle. With this said, along with the radio you will need the following items:Cigarette lighter 2 wire power cord, magnet mount antenna. These items can be bought on Amazon or you can get them at a truck stop.I recommend Amazon because of a lower price and free shipping and the secret nature of being able to hide your purchase if it's a surprise gift.Truck spec is a cheap brand for the 2 wire power cord and for the antenna I recommend one of the following: K40, Wilson 1000 or the Wilson 3000 magnet mount antennas. Those come with the antenna wire already attached to the magnet and all he would do is run the wire through the hatch or the rear door after mounting the antenna on the roof. It's really easy to do. Just hide the wire under floor mats and beside the seat up to the dashboard to the CB.Now if you are looking for a better radio and easier to use right out of the box, I recommend Galaxy or Connex as these are rock solid and all the knobs are right there on the front of the radio unlike this modern radio with most of the adjustments in menus which made me feel like I had to relearn everything over again. I prefer direct access. This Uniden Bearcat 980 has an annoying beep sound every time you change the channel. Those two other brands of radios I mentioned are more expensive but are what the big boys in my industry use in their big rigs. You should be able to compare the features of the Bearcat 980 with those of a Galaxy or a Connex CB and go on that alone to match up what you want. I read the other two answers you got, Why did they even bother...I hope this helps and as always just ask if you need more info. |
Question: | I asked if it was 100% new or a refurb and you deleted the question. I am now processing a refund/return on this item. Thanks for being a legit seller |
Answer: | I ordered and paid for a NEW Bearcat 980SSB from gadget-town and got a refurb/used item. If you check that seller's 100% positive reviews you will find others have had the same experience, yet Amazon has crossed out those reviews and returned the seller's 100% positive rating. Take that as you will. |
