Answer: | As the previous answer indicated, these are boost only. This means that the input voltage must always be less than the output voltage. If you are interested in a power source that can keep a constant voltage with higher or lower voltage then the output, you can search Amazon for buck/boost converters. Their are quite a few available to cover most needs. |

Answer: | Listing spec says 4 amps and 35V out max.. You dont want to push the max on things typically. My educated guess is that it depends on the input voltage and I would cap the input current at 4A max . Think about the power in/out .. This thing doesnt make energy, it converts energy from one voltage to another higher voltage - at the expense of lower output current. At best its 94% efficient so it loses 6% in heat. For example if you needed 25VDC at 3A out , thats 75 watts, plus 4.5W heat loss (75W x 0.06) , so you need 79.5W input. If your input voltage is 12VDC, you need 79.5W of input power so that's 6.6 Amps (79.5W/12) - not likely, plus 4.5Watts of heat is a lot . Lets try an input of 20V , thats 79.5W/20 = 3.975A input ... might work for a while, still putting out 4.5W heat losses. Short of any better specs, I dont think I'd push it past 3A in or out and 60W of total power transfer for a long term solution but you can probably get out more if you have good airflow and its only peaking hard for say 1 or two minutes. Try it, observe temps, watch current input, if it starts running away getting higher and higher input current at same output then you are doomed, but if it fits your needs then its ok for a while at least. These seem to be good units generally, just need to understand the limitations. Also note that these have 50V in/out electrolytic caps. Thats good, some other brands have 35V caps and you need some margin if you are near 35V , its not good design to run at the max. |

For example when charging a lithium-ion battery, its specs might suggest a the maximum charging current of 0.5A and maximum output voltage of 4.2V. So first, you set the open-circuit voltage to 4.2V. Turn the output current to minimum and connect the batery. Assuming the battery is pretty well discharged, when you first connect it you could potentially sink as much as several amps but that would hurt the battery. No problem, you've set the current to minimum (a few mA). When you connect the battery, turn up the current to 0.5A; the voltage will rise as you turn up the current, probably settling around 3.5V. (I am assuming that your power source will easily supply the required power.) As the battery charges, the voltage will gradually increase to 4.2V while the current stays at 0.5A. But once the voltage gets close to 4.2V the current will start to taper off. If left for several hours the voltage will still be at 4.2V but the current will be only a few mA. So the supply acts like constant current, then transitions to constant voltage. I hope this answers your question. I haven't seen any evidence of loss of control over either output voltage or current. FYI it's worthwhile to experiment with the unit connected to an output load resistor first, to get an understanding of which buttons to press to read the desired values. From memory, you can read input voltage and current, temperature of the heat sink in F or C, and output voltage and current. And you can also read output voltage independent of supplying power to the load (i.e. it can act like a voltmeter). |
