Question:	Several people commented on the WS 853 having low playback volume. Is the volume low only with speakers, or is it the same with earphones/earbuds
Answer:	I would say the small speaker playback volume does not get "loud". I recorded my voice and playback volume sounded the same. The default value is 30 (highest) and sounded comfortable in a quiet room by myself - though turned down to 20 and it still sounds fine. In a noisy area though, you will want to use headphones to carefully review the audio (or hold the speaker up to your ear instead of arms length away). Do not expect to the audio playback to "fill a room".UPDATE: I just noticed the "Diction" recording scene mode is definitely quieter! I was test recording in the various "Scenes" modes, and when I played the "Diction" one back on my computer it was CONSIDERABLY quieter. I would suggest sticking with the "Meeting" mode (the default) or "Off". For diction mode you probably need to speak very closely to the microphone or us an external microphone.NOTE: Set the "Record Level" to "High" as well

Answer:	Yes, you have the option of built in speaker which you can set on or off, and headphone jack for ear buds, headphones, or playing through a boom box or stereo/HiFi system. As with any external speaker/headphone pay attention to specs on impedance (which seem reasonable normal in this case)., it has a reasonably powerful speaker for such a small device. You can adjust volume from the playback interface while playing. Volume control seems awkward at first, but it is fine - actually consult manual diagram and it is easy to access and adjust once you are clear how. See the operating diagrams on volume control steps. They make it much more clear as to how to quickly operate the device properly. The menu inside the device is not overly complex and with a little clarity from the quick start and operating manual documentation it is not hard to fully set up and use the recorder. It also has jacks for stereo headphone and microphone. Three mics are built in. The speaker is on the back top of the device. Very good for such a small compact device. This is a high quality device consistent with Olympus quality. I can hear it fine with volume set halfway or less. You must control volume from the player controls on screen which is fine. There is no physical volume wheel or slide switch. Sound quality is good and adjustable with an profile equalizer for type of source like e.g., music, rock, jazz, classical. Has scenes (modes) for recording and playback. Personally, I am just unhappy about the lack of native Audible compatibility, per my review. If it had that I would be very happy with it. I will probably keep it and add buy another recorder like DM-620 for Audible. Otherwise, so far I like the recorder in terms of operation and rest of features. Choose carefully between the various models in terms of features, model line and price. It is just not what I needed it for and was misled by Olympus pre-sales. Olympus by the way makes tremendous cameras as well. Yes I know, a little more than the question you asked. internal Menu very good and easy to navigate. Control design is very good and positive. This device seems primarily designed for lectures and meetings, notes to self, transcription; With the added benefit of ability to play music or audio files or any .mp3 or .wav (with several coices of quality/compression/file size) files and the ability to add up to 32 Gb of external storage. You can move them back and forth between your computer where you can also edit them using built in USB (2.0) connector. So very convenient and self contained.

Answer:	I've left mine on for 12 hrs and the batteries were less than half drained, using regular grade batteries. My guess is you could easily get 48 hrs or more on lithium batteries

Answer:	I don't use this function but I looked through the manual and find no mention of automatic record.The VP-10 is a good recorder, which I use to dictate to Dragon. For that it does well, but you need to be aware that it has no manual pause button during recording, so when you start and stop a dictation, you create a new file. To me, the convenience of the small recorder has so far outweighed the inconvenience of having a whole bunch of files, because I can drag them one by one onto the Dragon transcription window and merge the transcription manually. But if you can't live with that, don't buy this machine.
Question:	Is there a mic jack
Answer:	No. The top of the recorder that sticks up from a shirt pocket has a headphone jack, but there is no mic jack or double function input/output. For a mic input you may want to look at some of the slightly larger pocket-size recorders made by Olympus, Sony and Tascam.

Answer:	Depending on the format/sample rate (ranging from linear PCM/ WAV stereo 16-bit @ 22kHz, to 5kbps Mono WAV,) you can get between 24 hours to 50 hours of battery life from a AAA alkaline cell. However the 4gB memory will only hold 12 hours' of PCM files because those files are so large. WMA @ 5kbps mono will take 1,620 hours of files to fill 4GB of memory, but there's only 50 hours of battery power per battery at that bitrate, so you'd have to change batteries 32 times.Bottom-lining it, at CD quality on one new alkaline AAA battery you can get 12 hours of recording, and at the lowest quality there'd be enough battery power to get approximately 24 hours of continuous recording.

Answer:	I have never tried. I don’t know the answer. My GUESS is that it would, assuming it is linked to the same ID and email.

Answer:	Not so well. Characters would randomly but frequently appear at the end of a document.

Answer:	I just transcribed an hour-long interview into Dragon. I used my iPhone to record the interview, then downloaded it to iTunes. I selected the recording in iTunes and clicked "transcribe"on Dragon. It took about a few minutes, but transcribed the whole hour. I copied it and pasted it into a WORD doc. Then, of course, I had to go through it and add punctuation and revise scrambled words. It took awhile, but sure beat me listening to the recording and typing it myself. I was interviewing two people. The one with the strongest voice had the least transcription errors. Next time I do this, I will pass the iPhone to the speaker to ensure a clear recording before transcription. This process required Apple products. Perhaps it can be done on other types of equipment as long as they have a record feature and some way to capture the sound recording on the computer.
