13 best police scanner handheld

A police scanner handheld, also known as a handheld scanner or portable scanner, is a device that allows users to listen to radio communications from various public safety agencies, including law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, and other government agencies. These devices fall under the category of two-way radios and are often used by hobbyists, enthusiasts, journalists, and emergency responders to monitor radio transmissions in real-time. Here are some key features and information about police scanner handhelds:

  1. Frequency Range: Police scanner handhelds typically cover a wide range of radio frequencies, including those used by law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, weather broadcasts, aviation, and more. They can often be programmed to scan and store multiple channels.

  2. Modes: Handheld scanners support different modulation modes, including AM (Amplitude Modulation), FM (Frequency Modulation), and digital modes like APCO P25 and DMR (Digital Mobile Radio). This versatility allows users to monitor a variety of communication systems.

  3. Display and Controls: Handheld scanners are equipped with an LCD display that shows channel information, frequency, and other relevant data. They also have buttons and controls for tuning, volume adjustment, and menu navigation.

  4. Memory and Presets: Users can program and store their favorite channels or frequencies in the scanner's memory for quick access. Some models offer preset banks for different services, making it easier to find and monitor specific agencies.

  5. Scan Modes: Scanners offer various scan modes, including conventional scanning (monitoring one frequency at a time), trunking scanning (monitoring trunked radio systems), and priority scanning (monitoring a primary channel while periodically checking other channels).

  6. Alerts and Notifications: Some handheld scanners feature alert functions that can notify users when specific keywords or tones are detected on monitored channels. This can be useful for staying informed about specific events or emergencies.

  7. Battery Life: Handheld scanners are powered by rechargeable or replaceable batteries.Battery life can vary significantly depending on usage, so it's important to choose a scanner with adequate battery capacity for your needs.

  8. PC Programming: Many modern handheld scanners can be programmed and updated using a computer, allowing users to easily customize their channel lists and firmware.

  9. Antennas: The quality and type of antenna can significantly impact reception. Some handheld scanners come with removable antennas that can be upgraded for better performance.

  10. Legal Considerations: It's important to note that while listening to most public safety frequencies is legal in many jurisdictions, there are exceptions and regulations that vary by location. Users should be aware of local laws and restrictions regarding scanner use.

In summary, a police scanner handheld is a versatile and portable device that enables users to monitor a wide range of radio communications. Whether for hobbyist interest, emergency preparedness, or journalism, these devices provide valuable access to real-time information from public safety agencies and other radio services. User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with 900 mhz
Answer: Hey Drakkenfyre barring any manufacturing anomalies the UV-5R accessories, including batteries and the BL-5L, should be compatible with the 5x3. Essentially they are the same radio outside, just different electronics/firmware inside. If you are unlucky to get one of the bad batteries visit the Miklor.com web site for all information about the radio, and this http://kj4ajp.mambm.com/BL5L/ for repairing the battery to make it fit. Hope this helps.
Question: We cannot pick anything up. All static. Occasionally fire department. What's the problem
Answer: This radio uses all the battery options and accessories that fit the UV-5R or the BF-F8HP. So yes. You can use both the AAA and the AA battery eliminators as well as the extended batteries.Hope this helps.
Question: Can I pick up police frequencies with this? I live in a high crime and would like to listen in to the chatter for pure entertainment purposes
Answer: All radio transmitters and some other emitters must have FCC certification. Commercial and public service require Part 90 certification. Other services like FRS and GMRS fall under other parts of the rules. As part of the certification process the FCC issues an FCC ID number for each design of transmitter. I have used the FCC ID to determine the frequency range and modulation type of radios before by doing a Google search of the number. There is also a search page on the FCC site. The only radio service exempt from these regulations is Amateur Radio. Ham radio operators are directly responsible for their emissions and have demonstrated sufficient knowledge of the rules and electronics by passing an exam. Most of the Chinese radios are therefore marketed to Ham radio operators since most do not have any FCC certification. They are also not legal to use on commercial, FRS and GMRS frequencies unless they have the FCC certification number or a sticker with the numbers on them. The UV-5X3 is a perfect example. The sticker under the battery affixed to the radio calls it an Amateur radio and there is no reference to FCC certification or ID. There are some of the UV-5R radios that have a part 90 certification sticker on them but they are mostly the older models like the UV-5RV2+. If programmed correctly so the end user can not operate the radio on frequencies they are not authorized to use they can be used for commercial and public service. They are not certified and are not legal to use for FRS and GMRS even with the part 90 certification.
Question: DO YOU NEED AN OUTSIDE ANTENA
Answer: We have a 100watt repeater (before 2013) for local / regional and achieve 200 miles every day, and a few long haul repeaters that are 1.5KW to backhaul between other repeaters and their base stations. We could use VoIP between repeaters, we are just blessed to have a mountaintop that we use, and just expanded as another liscense holder gave up their space, so we have another relay tower. For security I won't say where, but you likely have used it without knowing. So listen to everyone here and join your regional and national clubs. They fund 30-40-% of our operations.

User questions & answers

Question: do you have to use a computer? My husband wants a scanner to hear local fire, police, etc reports. Will this one do it
Answer: The SDS200 unit had better digital reception, more features and better circuitry than that older discontinued model you mention. The SDS200 can also receive Phase 2 digital systems, which the 197 can't do, and with optional firmware update the SDS200 can monitor DMR and ProVoice Digital, which the 197 can't do.
Question: What are the exact dimensions of this unit? I would like to mount this in my semi truck on my rack with my CB radios that are approximately 7 3/4" w
Answer: If that is 14218 kilohertz, the answer is no. If the frequency is 142.180 megahertz the answer is yes.
Question: Is this radio battery operated or can you plug into electricity
Answer: Yes, a telescoping antenna comes included.
Question: My metro area uses p25 phase ii for all trunked emergency dispatch. will this scanner be of any use or do i need a different unit
Answer: Yes! Your scanner’s Replay feature will instantly replay the transmissions you’ve just heard. You can set how long a period Replay records for instant playback. This period can range from 30 seconds to 4 minutes.

Product description

"The BC355N is an affordable, basic mobile scanner that's great for home or mobile use, with 300 storable channels, coverage of all the ""action"" bands, convenient features like ""close call"" and program lock, and a wealth of powering options for different applications. Receives conventional channels on the following frequencies: (25-54 MHz) (108-174 MHz) (225-380 MHz) (406-512 MHz) (806-956 MHz) (excluding cellular telephone bands) "

  • The Uniden Bearcat BC355N Mobile/Base Scanner is one of the most feature packed, user-friendly, entry level scanners available today. It can pick up analog receptions including 6 Service banks for monitoring Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Marine, Air, Weather, and CB frequencies.
  • The BC355N features “Close Call RF Capture Technology,” which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters. This pre-programmed search makes it easier to find active frequencies and helps you stay on top of local happenings and emergencies in your area. 100 ch/sec Scan Speed (max)
  • You can save up to 300 frequencies that are scanned along with the preset frequencies. So whenever you encounter a newly activated local frequency for any service category, you can add it to the bank for that category. This gives you quick access to the frequencies you want to hear.
  • The BC355N comes complete with a backlit display, making it easier to read in low light conditions, along with AC adapter, a DC power cable and an automotive power outlet plug, giving you more options for supplying power at home or in your car. Frequency range for aircraft band is AM mode 8.33 STEP (kHz) at 108.0000, 136.9916(Lower and Upper)
  • If you’re looking for an affordable way to jump into the world of scanners, the BC355N may be the right choice for you. (Please note: model BC355N is not suitable for trunking or digital radio system monitoring. If you live in an area where trunking or digital radio systems are used, you need to upgrade to a Uniden Digital model (“D” stands for Digital), such as models BCD996P2, BCD436HP, BCD536HP, BCD325P2, or HomePatrol-2.

User questions & answers

Question: I know nothing about scanners in general. Is this a good scanner for beginners, and does it come with everything needed to set up and listen
Answer: In short, it is a good basic starter scanner. It will get you all analog transmissions from 27Mhz all the way up to 800Mhz.For a beginner scanner though, it can be a little tough to program manually. I learned through google searches and youtube videos. But if you want to just figure out what is going on around you, the scanner is preset to scanner different frequency stretches with the push of a button. So you can tell it to search just the standard police/fire/ems frequencies, or just the aircraft frequencies instead of manually programming.Oh, and yes this comes with enough accessories to permanently (wiring harness) or temporarily (cig lighter) set up in your car/truck or in your home as a base scanner (wall plug).Hope that helps..
Question: What is the difference between the Uniden Scanner model number BC355N and the Uniden Scanner with model number BC355C
Answer: The 335N is just an updated model. The BC355C is no longer in production by Uniden instead the newer BC355N is the current production model. Both scanners are essentially the same aside from very minor technical specifications, just one is currently in production and the other isn't.
Question: what type of external antenna connector does it take I want to use it in my RV and I have a car type push in plug does that work
Answer: This is a helpful tool, now in most area police use a different type of radio. They use a p25 phase 2 to help prevent people from hearing them. The scanner for that kinda of radio comes at a high price! I work in EMS, I use this radio when I’m not working to try to avoid any road that has a MVA. I also go to calls sometimes if man power is requested
Question: does the scanner recieve annalog or digital transmissions
Answer: Perhaps the a new model was released under the same part number, because there are many answer from 2013 stating this is not a digital scanner and that this is not a trunking scanner, but today in 2017 it clearly is. The description lists P25 Phase I and II as well as X-TDMA. P25 is the digital radio standard for public safety. X-TDMA is the digital standard for multimedia data over radio. There is also a lengthy list of trunking technologies that are supported by this model. Amazon should clean up and delete the old misleading answers as they no longer apply.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the programming be done on an Apple Mac
Answer: Yes it can and it's relatively straightforward IF you have the right cable. You need CHIRP http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download (get the latest daily build) and then you need this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The beauty of this particular cable is zero drivers are needed, the Mac (at least Yosemite) automatically recognizes it. I wrote about my experience on this at my blog: https://chris.gonyea.com/2015/03/setting-up-a-baofeng-uv-5r-2-chrip-on-my-mac/
Question: Can I get basic NOAA Weather stations on this everywhere (or, everywhere 'within reason
Answer: Yes. NOAA uses 7 frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz. You can check the National Weather Service website at for specific frequencies used in your area. There are over 1000 stations, covering all 50 states. Most NOAA stations operate with fairly high power, some with as much as 1000 watts, so they should be very easy to hear.
Question: If you transmitt with this unit how can effected partys trace to the source
Answer: Bottom line is this: If you can put out an RF signal you can be found. Yes many variables go into finding the source and they can find moving signals also. Tens of Thousands of hams and or T-Hunters or Transmitter Hunters are around the globe. If you screw around with the HAM bands you will get caught.Get your Ham license it's easy and enjoy the hobby.
Question: Can this be used as a FRS 2-way radio
Answer: Reasons this makes a good "walkie talkie" (even though it is a HT - Handy Talkie 1) Removable antenna - can upgrade your antenna for your specific needs/significant improvement to performance 2) Can program the channels - not just FRS/GMRS channels 2a) Can set adjust power levels to more legal levels 2b) Can program NOAA freqs giving more value 2c) Can use/listen MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) - license free but kinda like GMRS 2d) Can set channels to receive only so nobody transmits channels they should not (NOAA) 2e) Can listen to school bus drivers, some fire departments and anybody else who uses radio (see 2d) 3) Can get test free GMRS license to legally use GMRS at full handheld power 4) Can get you a HAM license (technician class) and program Amateur UHF/VHF channels - impress your friends and ladies at bars 5) Can monitor two channels at once 6) Lots off menu options - customizable 7) Will learn about radios, "bands", frequencies and other cool stuff 8) Has more power than most walkie talkies - i.e. better range - especially if you upgrade the antenna Reasons this DOES NOT makes a good "walkie talkie": 1) To program you need to purchase the programming cable and to download CHIRP (freeware). Of course only one cable is needs for all the radios 2) Have to read instructions, try stuff on computer/radio and have it not work and you need to figure out why and maybe a youtube video or two.

User questions & answers

Question: Can even the frs work on hp
Answer: From page 63 of the UV-82HP manual available online. "You may be tempted to use FRS, GMRS, MURS (in the USA) or PMR446 (in Europe) frequencies. Do note however that there are restrictions on these bands that make this transceiver ILLEGAL for use" Don't follow the advice, based on personal opinions of those who know little about radio communications and even less about the law.
Question: can alert tones from fire and ems be programed into this radio
Answer: When fire and ems transmit they automatically send out a tone before they start talking. You can look up the RadioReference dot com website (click Databases) and it will give you the frequencies for fire and ems by state. Texas gives the tones before broadcasting the audio. I would assume the rest of the country does the same. It may be the law to broadcast tones, but not sure of other states. Try it and see. I use a UV-82hp and the tones are automatic.
Question: Can you switch the backlight on and off manually? the automatic on/off drives me crazy(er
Answer: Using CHIRP, you can extend the backlight time out.
Question: Which would you recommend more, this uv-82hp or the bf-f8hp
Answer: I own both. Offhand I prefer the feel of the UV-82HP. Same with the keypad The BF-F8HP feels "overstuffed". Advantage of the UV-82HP is the Dual PTT - Toggle up tor transmit on A and toggle down to transmit on B. Very nice for dual channel use Disadvantage of the UV-82HP - MUST reboot to change between channel and VFO mode. I don't do that much - but it's annoying. Menus pretty much the same. I have become the "radio man" for our Boy Scout Camporees - and the BF-F8HP has a very nice bulk charger available. One base 6 or 8 radios. For a "field deployment" one power and one base sure beats 6 to 8 bases, cables, power warts. For that more than anything I've been procuring more BF-F8HP and that's what the staff is familiar with. I sure wish there was a bulk charger base for the UV-82HP.

Product features

BaoFeng UV-82HP

The UV-82HP is the second generation of the classic UV-82 Series. Some new features found in the UV-82HP are the three selectable power levels (Low - 1 watt, Medium - 5 watt, High- 7/8 watt ) allowing for a high-output of up to eight watts.

What Makes it Unique?

It has 3 Power Levels (1, 5, 7/8 watt).

VFO/ MR (Frequency Mode) can be locked via software.

The Dual Push-to-Talk Switch can be synchronized via software to simplify operation of the radio.

A new 80 Page In-Depth User's Guide.

It includes the High Gain V-85 Antenna to Optimize Performance.

Full Accessory Compatibility with all UV-82 accessories.

Customize Your Operation With Channels, Programmable Buttons, And More.

You can program your UV-82HP exactly how you want it. There are 128 programmable memory channels. You can add or remove channels from scanning list using the free computer software. You can give channels alphanumeric names, using a computer. The radio has 3 power levels (8 watt maximum), allowing you to choose how far you can communicate.

Dual or Single Push-to-Talk Selectable

The UV-82 Series come with a dual push-to-talk button. The dual PTT allows you to transmit on two frequencies by the use of the rocker push-to-talk switch. By pressing 'up' you can transmit on 'Frequency A' and by pushing down you can transmit on 'Frequency B'.

Frequency A or B can also be used as a scanner of channels, frequencies, CTCSS and DTS tones.

Note: The BaoFeng UV-82HP allows you to synchronize the PTT button to re-enable a single Push-to-Talk switch. This simplifies the use for those who require only one frequency to talk on.

See the Full Comparison Chart

Click the image to zoom and compare the UV-82HP to other BaoFeng Models.

The UV-82HP is a major update to the previous UV-82 model with firmware, hardware, and even packing upgrades.

There are a variety of BaoFengs models in existence, but generally no differences exist. Some models are even re-manufactured units.

No matter the model number BaoFeng radios are based on one of these chipsets.

The UV-82HP is a upgrade from the UV-82 and UV-5R series with the addition of features, power levels, and the updated chipset revision that supports the High Power.

Versatile Radio

The UV-82HP also includes: External Accessory Compatibility, FM Radio, Flashlight, Emergency Alarm.

The UV-82HP has one built-in receiver but can 'watch' two channels/frequencies (semi duplex). The UV-82HP will monitor both frequencies giving priority to the first station to receive an incoming call.

The UV-82HP supports CTCSS, DCS, and DTMF calling methods. Tone calling (private line) is required by most repeater applications and the UV-82HP supports the latest standards.

The UV-82HP can send DTMF tones. This allows for sending ANI (Caller ID) or remote commands that require DTMF tones.

The UV-82HP is able to Transmit on Narrowband (12.5kHz) and Wideband (25kHz).

BaoFeng UV-82 Series Radio

The UV-82 series is BaoFeng's most commercialized radio series. Compared to the UV-5R and other previous series; the UV-82 radios come with a much louder speaker (1 watt), while other current BaoFeng radios use a 700mW speaker.

The UV-82 series radios also have a more solid case that employ larger buttons as well compared to the previous BaoFeng series. The UV-82HP uses the latest BaoFeng chipset and PCB board that outperforms the range, accuracy, and output of the previous BaoFeng chipsets.

It is not simply a remake but a new radio from the ground up.
