User questions & answers

Question: can you also use AA batteries to power these radios
Answer: Yes you can, however the output power will drop drastically (form 5 to I think about 2W) with no indication on the display - it would still show “H” for High power. With the included battery pack though (which is essentially 5 1.2 NiMH AAA batteries in series) it achieves 5W transmit power. Which means if you buy it because of 5W output you must use battery pack. However battery pack does not last long. It is only 700mAh. Radio consumes 42mA on standby. So about 16 hours standby time if you don’t transmit. Charding time on the other hand is 12 hours. Make your own conclusions.
Question: what is the best REAL range I can expect
Answer: There are certainly many different choices available to folks regarding radio choices. Many consumers, however, fall into the trap of believing the misleading advertising that various manufacturer’s use to help sell their products, especially when they are in panic mode due to a natural disaster (like an earthquake) or (currently) various lock-down scenarios due to the latest overseas virus. One frequently used example of this buying trap are the claims of 35 to 50 mile range from 1/2 watt UHF FRS/GMRS handheld radios with non-removable antennas (frequently seen on various Cobra, Midland, Motorola, and Uniden radios sold at various big box stores or on the internet). At UHF frequencies (and with a decent antenna), you’ll normally get around 1 mile of range for every 1 watt of power on transmit, so a 1/2 watt big box store FRS/GMRS radio is likely to get only 1/2 mile of range, nowhere near the 35 to 50 mile claims shown on the box in large type (with the phrase “under optimum conditions” shown in very small type). What that means is that if one individual is standing near the cliff face on a tall 9,000 ft. high mountain and his friend is doing the same thing 35 miles away (with nothing between the two mountains but air), then they “may” get the 35 mile range as advertised. When both individuals are at ground level, normal range is reduced to a 1/2 mile (or less) depending upon obstructions that may be in their way.
Question: How much range can I expect from these radios in rugged, mountainous and forested terrain
Answer: Expect
Question: do I need a gmrs license
Answer: I called the FCC. If the radio goes beyond 2 watts, even if you are only using the lower-power channels, you still need to spend the $70 for the 10 year license. immediate family can use radios with your license (and you on the channel). GMRS will make for a better experience. I would just get it to be safe.

User questions & answers

Question: How large of a metal ground plane (diameter of a metal disc) do I need to provide for a non-metal mounting on my Corvette (composite panels
Answer: I would say at least 6 inches. Seems to work good for me
Question: Will the 15w version still be able to operate at 5w for the frs channels
Answer: If you operate a radio that has been approved for both FRS and GMRS, and if you limit your operations to the FRS channels with a maximum power of ½ watt effective radiated power and an integral antenna, you are not required to have a license. (Note that some dual-service radios transmit with higher power on FRS channels 1 through 7; these radios can be used without a license only on FRS channels 8 through 14.)
Question: Do you need a license to use this
Answer: Yes. A GMRS license is required to transmit on this radio. It is $70 for a 10 year license. You need to purchase from FCC. This is not a HAM radio so a HAM license will not work.
Question: Is this a CB
Answer: No, it’s a 2-way radio that utilizes a different frequency band than C.B.’s. These are GMRS radios which by law you are supposed to have a license from the FCC to operate. The license is not hard to get. It’s a 10 year license for you and your immediate family that cost $70. Which averages out to $7 dollars a year. There is no test, you just go on line and register then submit your fee. I did mine on a Saturday night and it was approved on Monday.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the transmit wattage on the GMRS channels. I know 50 is allowed but what do these transmit
Answer: This particular one does not.
Question: Can I purchase two sets of walkies and have all four communicate on the same band. Or is the set only good for two people and therefor won't let you
Answer: It's not the mode (FM vs. AM) that determines the range, it's the frequency. These radios are in the 450-ish MHz range, while CB's are in the 27MHz range. The 27MHz frequencies are subject to propagation, etc. The range on a 888S is going to be a couple miles at most under ideal conditions. A CB's normal range is considerably greater, and when propagation is high, you can quite literally talk around the world on the CB. As was said in the other answer, FM is going to provide far superior clarity over AM.
Question: How well does the NOAA weather alert work? I'm wondering if this product would work well to keep for our family's emergency supply kit
Answer: Yes! SCANNINGScanning is used for hands off monitoring of your favorite frequencies. When the transceiver options are set to SCAN (via software), setting the channel selector to channel 16 directs the radio to scan the selected channels from 1-16. 1. Transceiver stops scanning when a signal is detected and continues when signal is gone.2. If there are less than 2 channels, it cannot scan. (Go figure)3. On channel 16, Press and Hold the PTT and MONI buttons while switching ON the transceiver to turn the Scanning ON or OFF.4. If FM Radio function is activated via software, the radio will not scan. Note: There is no actual FM Radio function in this radio, so this option should always remain deactivated in software.
Question: Why does it say 30 mile range if it only reaches 3 to 4 blocks in city & open space is a couple miles? Seems like dishonest advertising
Answer: Did you program the radio yet? I just two of these and the same thing happened to but until I uploaded new frequencies following the instructions at http://www.miklor.com/BF888/

User questions & answers

Question: How long do these radios last with alkaline aaa batteries? 8 hours? one day? two days
Answer: I have had to modify stock and other antenna to fit
Question: I have 1 left from a set grandson got for Christmas, can it connect with new radios on same channel
Answer: No --- I bought RT since I have other radios and RT for them. But you can use open source CHIRP. The RT dongle works better than the generic, btw. The driver for the generic is wonky.
Question: How do I remove the belt clip? I bought this and cannot put batteries since I cannot remove the belt clip
Answer: The GT3WP is the waterproof version. IP67 (Dustproof, splash proof, Rain proof, rated submersible at a depth of 3ft for 30 minutes.) The GT3WP is a completely different radio from the other GT3's
Question: Where are the input jacks located on the radio
Answer: Yes, you can do this with your radio with clear and loud results. It also operates on MURS. However, the radio is not certified to do this. So, do not do it or you will die. It is just like if you go 56 miles per hour in a speed limit 55 zone. Do not do that either. You will die.

User questions & answers

Question: How big is raido without the antenna
Answer: Low battery feed back warning! Jeezzz
Question: how many dual chager's does the 8 pack come with
Answer: Yes!
Question: Can AA batteries be used in place of battery packs
Answer: I am so glad there is YouTube for any question. If i haven’t look at video, I think I would just break the belt. I recommend to everyone who is struggling to take the belt clip off to watch YouTube video, it is actually very easy. But if you need to do it when you are camping you will need to take a screwdriver with you. It is a shame manufacturer can’t make good quality manual.
Question: I previously purchased 2 of these radios. If I purchase 2 more, will all 4 be able to communicate
Answer: on the bottom of the radio

User questions & answers

Question: What happens if you don't have a lisence
Answer: Large fines are possible, I have seen sources that say up to $10,000 and jail time. There is a pending repeal of the license requirement but is currently still required and I think the fee right now is $70 for 5 years and extends to your family for use as well. The site is a bit of a pain to figure out but you will only take a day to have your license.
Question: How long is the antenna cable
Answer: The packaged antenna cable for the MXT105 is approximately 20 ft. in length.
Question: What kind of max range does this thing have
Answer: 3 miles without repeater
Question: Will this work with midland lxt600vp3 radios
Answer: Yes it sure will, the only channels you will not be able to use are 8 - 14 which are set to .5W of power per the FCC. The GMRS MicroMobiles are not programmed with those channels. However, use channels 1 - 7 and 15 - 22 for easy communication between these units!

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this radio for a home base
Answer: Yes you can, but you'll need a 110v AC to 12v DC power converter and you'll also need a base station type antenna. I'm not sure why you would use this particular unit though because Midland makes a 40watt unit that would be much better suited to base station use.
Question: Are the privacy codes compatible with Motorola talkabout radios
Answer: Yes, however, I also have the T600 talkabouts and I was disappointed in the range between the MXT275 and the T600. I live in the city (Boston) in a neighborhood with lots of houses, so I knew that I had obstructions to deal with. But I thought I would have gotten better performance. The MXT to T600 only got about 50-75 feet further than the two handheld T600s got with each other. I am awaiting the upgraded 3db antenna to see if that helps any. Also, just a note, I did some research and the Talkabouts are limited to max power of 1.5 watts. Probably more realistically 1 watt consistently. I decided to pick up a set of the new Midland T295 handhelds.. as they are rated at nearly 3 watts.. probably 2.5 watts more realistically. But thats still a 150% power increase over the T600s so in theory.. I'm hoping the more powerful handheld.. paired with the MXT and the upgraded 3db antenna will have far better performance. I'm sure I'll have far more success with this set up when we use them on camping trips away from the city tho. Cheers.
Question: Is the internal speaker in the microphone or in the base unit
Answer: There are speakers in both the head unit and the base unit
Question: Does this radio have an internal ID that will show up on another radio or be able to be identified if used with a repeater
Answer: Don’t be fooled, most users don’t and shouldn’t be required to have a license to use this radio. The other answer that says you are required to have and use a call sign is false. You can get a GMRS license which might be a good thing to have. Now if your setting up a repeater I believe you do need to be licensed.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the range on the handheld walkie talkies
Answer: Urban is about 2 miles. Not tried in the woods yet
Question: Do you need a license
Answer: Yes, the MicroMobile requires an FCC license which is $70 and good for 10 years. It covers you and your immediate family. There is no test, you simply sign up for an FCC ID and then fill out a form and pay! We have a few blogs on the topic on Midlandusa.com - https://midlandusa.com/why-do-i-need-a-gmrs-license-how-do-i-get-it/
Question: can you add additional handheld radio to the bundle
Answer: Yes they have bundles with that available
Question: Can you use CB channels on these
Answer: No you cannot. Citizens Band or CB are programmed to function only on those frequencies, near 27MHz. Both the MicroMobile (MXT115) and the walkie talkie (T71) in this bundle communicate on the shared GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies which are in 462 MHz

User questions & answers

Question: Is it water resistant
Answer: Yes, resistant to light splashing
Question: How many watts? this model clearly has more power than other midland radios because it's listed as gmrs and requires a license
Answer: Haha, you have entered the wormhole. These radios are 2.85W according to the FCC filing for the radio FCC ID MMAT295. (Both T290 and T295 have the same ID). Watts can be misleading though, because this radio has a longer internal antenna than the popular GXT1000 and therefore performs a bit better. And to add to your confusion, there are 3 (yes 3) different FCC filing for the GXT1000. The newest GXT1000 radios made after Sept 2018 under FCC ID MMAGXT1050G are now only 2.5w. These radios are junk. If you can find GXT1000s a bit older before 2018 under the FCC ID MMAGXT1050P, those are a bit better at 3.07w. Then there's the totally discontinued GXT1000s manufactured before 2015 that have FCC ID MMAGXT950 that have the full advertised 5.33w. If you can get your hands on these older radios, they are amazing.
Question: What is -the power in watts- of these - not the bs miles which is never attainable

User questions & answers

Question: Do these have to be used with a repeater? what is the distance it can transmit with and without the repeater
Answer: Low Power on Channels 1-7 (FRS/GMRS shared channels), presumably 5 watts. No access to Channels 8-14 (FRS only channels), Medium/Hi Power on Channels 15-22, presumably 40 watts on High, unknown PEP on Medium setting. RP 15-18 Channels transmit on one frequency and receive on another (requiring a radio that can be program to transmit and receive on different frequencies, or a repeater. Transmit distances on GMRS frequencies are based on the antenna, height of the antenna, transmitter's power output (limited to 50 watts for repeaters) and the terrain. Also, UHF (GMRS frequencies) performs better in building but not as well in open field like VHF.
Question: Is this a Ham Radio
Answer: No, This is a 40 Watt GMRS Radio.
Question: When are these radios going to be updated with the new additional gmrs channels
Answer: Channels 8–14, formerly exclusive to FRS, since September 28, 2017 can be used by GMRS at 0.5 watts. Channels 15–22, formerly reserved exclusively for GMRS, can be used at up to 2 watts in the FRS. This is why. Maybe in the future they will. Hope this helps you.
Question: What kind of license is needed with this raido
Answer: There is conflicting information below. I hold both a GMRS licence, and a Amateur Radio License (Tech). This radio requires a GMRS license. No test, $70 for immediate family for 10 years. Having an amateur radio license DOES NOT qualify someone to operate on GMRS; the two licenses are for different proposes and frequency ranges. A license does help the FCC to enforce airwave regulations, something I've changed my opinion on-now believing in stronger enforcement-over the last few years. The question does come up, "Who's going to stop me?" Honestly, maybe no one. But for me, the more I see the dissolve of rule-of-law, good manners, and good sense, the more important it becomes to be a person who is fighting the real battle: whether or not to be a person if integrity. (BTW - If someone truly didn't want or can't get a license, for whatever reason, there are some other radio services that everyone is "licensed" to use (called "license by rule"; there is no "unlicensed" radio bands, so-to-speak) like Citizens Band (CB's), Family Radio Service (FRS, often packaged with GMRS, so know which channels you can use and at what power settings), etc. Radios can be great fun and good experiences for kids. Teach them well, and I hope to hear you on-the-air sometime!
