11 best gmrs repeaters
GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) repeaters are essential components in the world of two-way radios and communication systems. These repeaters play a crucial role in extending the range and coverage of GMRS radios, making them particularly valuable for individuals and organizations that require long-distance communication.
Key points about GMRS repeaters:
Range Extension: GMRS radios typically have a limited range due to their low power output. GMRS repeaters are strategically placed at elevated locations like tall buildings or towers to extend the range of communication. When a GMRS radio communicates with a repeater, the repeater retransmits the signal at a higher power, effectively increasing the range.
Enhanced Coverage: GMRS repeaters provide improved coverage in areas where direct radio-to-radio communication is not possible due to distance or obstacles like buildings, hills, or forests. They help bridge communication gaps and create a network that covers a larger geographic area.
Frequencies and Licensing: GMRS repeaters operate on specific frequencies within the GMRS radio band. To use a GMRS repeater legally, individuals and organizations must obtain the appropriate licenses from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. Licensing ensures that frequencies are managed efficiently and that interference is minimized.
Duplex Operation: GMRS repeaters use duplex operation, which means they receive signals on one frequency and transmit on another. Users communicate with the repeater on one frequency, and the repeater rebroadcasts their messages on a separate output frequency.
Private and Group Communication: GMRS repeaters can be set up for private or group communication.Private repeaters are typically used by organizations for internal communications, while group repeaters are available for use by the general public within the licensed area.
Emergency and Public Safety: GMRS repeaters are sometimes used for emergency and public safety communications. They provide reliable communication during emergencies, allowing for coordination among first responders, search and rescue teams, and other critical services.
Equipment and Installation: Setting up a GMRS repeater requires specialized equipment, including a repeater unit, antenna systems, and proper site selection. Installation often involves obtaining the necessary permits and adhering to local regulations.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance and monitoring are essential to ensure the continued operation of GMRS repeaters. This includes checking for proper power supply, antenna performance, and system integrity.
GMRS repeaters significantly enhance the utility of GMRS radios by extending their range and coverage, making them valuable tools for businesses, emergency services, outdoor enthusiasts, and other groups that rely on reliable two-way communication over extended distances. However, it's crucial to adhere to licensing and regulatory requirements to use GMRS repeaters legally.

The GMRS-V1 is easy and straight forward to use. The GMRS-V1 comes with GMRS two-way and GMRS repeater channels pre-programmed. You can easily modify the GMRS-V1 to transmit a Privacy tone, right from the radio menu. You can even require a privacy tone for incoming transmissions. You can mix and match tones for repeater usage. The GMRS-V1 will save any modification to the channel (even during a reboot) and will remember any channel change you apply in any mode.
Want to communicate with other GMRS users with other brand GMRS radios? There is no guesswork involved anymore between brands. The GMRS-V1 can work with any GMRS radio - and has every single privacy tone option available (more than any other GMRS radio). Even if other users don't know which privacy tone is being used on their GMRS radio; you are able to scan for which tone is being used. This ensures easy compatibility with all brands.
GMRS frequencies and offsets cannot be altered to allow peace of mind while using your GMRS-V1. Want to start from scratch? A simple reset menu option resets the GMRS-V1 to the GMRS-V1 defaults.

User questions & answers
Question: | So, it's a stripped down modified uv82 with fixed gmrs only channels to get the fcc certification? but why is it limited to 2 watts in the permit |
Answer: | The answer I got from BTech re: the power was "The guaranteed minimum high power output of the GMRS-V1 is 2W." I think the important word here is "guaranteed." I've heard of other owners getting anywhere from 3 to 5 watts output. The most BTech will _guarantee_ is 2. YMMV |
Question: | Does this radio have better range then the a regular gmrs radio |
Answer: | I have compared the range of this with other GMRS HTs and found that it is generally better. I replaced the antenna with a Nagoya NA-771, but even the stock antenna seems to out preform the best radios with fixed antennas. The settings on this radio have a lot more options making it much more versatile but may take slightly longer to understand than the limited settings of the ones available in most retail stores. I have a set of Midland FRS/GMRS radios that have clearer audio quality at close range but as range is increased their audio quality reduces to static over much shorter distances than this radio until this one is still able to be heard and the others are just noise. Rx range seems to be substantially better on this radio than others I have compared to. All of this is of course limited by your surroundings and terrain. For maximum range from a handheld GMRS I have been pleased with this radio! |
Question: | Are the antennas on this radio removable to allow connecting a longer antenna, or a cable to an exterior antenna |
Answer: | 1. Yes, antenna is removable. As other reviewers noted it is SMA-Female, similar to that for Baofeng etc. radios. It is different from the connector for Yaesu/Vertex, Kenwood, etc. Be gentle when you tighten the antenna. If too tight, then when you take it off the connector will stay on the radio and pull out of the antenna. 2. Agreeing with other reviewers - I believe the radio has been updated to the new GMRS rules of 2017. This is the third pair my volunteer CERT team has purchased (Community Emergency Response Team), so I know the radio well. |
Question: | When will this unit be update to reflect the new changes in gmrs rules |
Answer: | Nov. 11, 2017 The same model with updated Firmware (US32418) was released. The GMRS V1 now has all 30 channels as given in the new GMRS rules, (the additional seven FRS 467 MHz interstitials channels along with the older 23 GMRS channels including the eight repeater channels). The channels have also been moved so it now starts with the radio's Channel 01 instead of the previous firmware where the channels started with Channel 00. This helps as you can listen to the Voice announce the channels and they now correspond with the GMRS channel numbers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How large of a metal ground plane (diameter of a metal disc) do I need to provide for a non-metal mounting on my Corvette (composite panels |
Answer: | I would say at least 6 inches. Seems to work good for me |
Question: | Will the 15w version still be able to operate at 5w for the frs channels |
Answer: | If you operate a radio that has been approved for both FRS and GMRS, and if you limit your operations to the FRS channels with a maximum power of ½ watt effective radiated power and an integral antenna, you are not required to have a license. (Note that some dual-service radios transmit with higher power on FRS channels 1 through 7; these radios can be used without a license only on FRS channels 8 through 14.) |
Question: | Do you need a license to use this |
Answer: | Yes. A GMRS license is required to transmit on this radio. It is $70 for a 10 year license. You need to purchase from FCC. This is not a HAM radio so a HAM license will not work. |
Question: | Is this a CB |
Answer: | No, it’s a 2-way radio that utilizes a different frequency band than C.B.’s. These are GMRS radios which by law you are supposed to have a license from the FCC to operate. The license is not hard to get. It’s a 10 year license for you and your immediate family that cost $70. Which averages out to $7 dollars a year. There is no test, you just go on line and register then submit your fee. I did mine on a Saturday night and it was approved on Monday. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these have to be used with a repeater? what is the distance it can transmit with and without the repeater |
Answer: | Low Power on Channels 1-7 (FRS/GMRS shared channels), presumably 5 watts. No access to Channels 8-14 (FRS only channels), Medium/Hi Power on Channels 15-22, presumably 40 watts on High, unknown PEP on Medium setting. RP 15-18 Channels transmit on one frequency and receive on another (requiring a radio that can be program to transmit and receive on different frequencies, or a repeater. Transmit distances on GMRS frequencies are based on the antenna, height of the antenna, transmitter's power output (limited to 50 watts for repeaters) and the terrain. Also, UHF (GMRS frequencies) performs better in building but not as well in open field like VHF. |
Question: | Is this a Ham Radio |
Answer: | No, This is a 40 Watt GMRS Radio. |
Question: | When are these radios going to be updated with the new additional gmrs channels |
Answer: | Channels 8–14, formerly exclusive to FRS, since September 28, 2017 can be used by GMRS at 0.5 watts. Channels 15–22, formerly reserved exclusively for GMRS, can be used at up to 2 watts in the FRS. This is why. Maybe in the future they will. Hope this helps you. |
Question: | What kind of license is needed with this raido |
Answer: | There is conflicting information below. I hold both a GMRS licence, and a Amateur Radio License (Tech). This radio requires a GMRS license. No test, $70 for immediate family for 10 years. Having an amateur radio license DOES NOT qualify someone to operate on GMRS; the two licenses are for different proposes and frequency ranges. A license does help the FCC to enforce airwave regulations, something I've changed my opinion on-now believing in stronger enforcement-over the last few years. The question does come up, "Who's going to stop me?" Honestly, maybe no one. But for me, the more I see the dissolve of rule-of-law, good manners, and good sense, the more important it becomes to be a person who is fighting the real battle: whether or not to be a person if integrity. (BTW - If someone truly didn't want or can't get a license, for whatever reason, there are some other radio services that everyone is "licensed" to use (called "license by rule"; there is no "unlicensed" radio bands, so-to-speak) like Citizens Band (CB's), Family Radio Service (FRS, often packaged with GMRS, so know which channels you can use and at what power settings), etc. Radios can be great fun and good experiences for kids. Teach them well, and I hope to hear you on-the-air sometime! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these work with samcom handheld gmrs |
Answer: | It should work with any GMRS radios. |
Question: | Can anyone tell me exactly what i will need to program this, i have the 5r uv portable and the cord was wrong costing me more money |
Answer: | I recommend not programming with chirp. there are alot of restrictions on gmrs radio and limited number of channels you can only transmit on so there is really no need to use the software for the 22 rx/tx channels you have. unless you want to add a bunch of listen only channels its easy to program through the radio interface and if you use repeaters you will be forced to reprogram channels as you travel since you can only store 8 repeater channel settings |
Question: | It this radio part 95 accepted by the FCC |
Answer: | Yes this radio is part 95 accepted by the FCC. |
Question: | could i use cigarette lighter adapter for power up this radio |
Answer: | The advertised maximum amperage draw is 20 amps, and the supply wires are fairly heavy - 12 or 14 AGW; so it's probably too heavy for your typical cigarette lighter c circuit (15 A). The supply leads are fused from the manufacturer, and direct battery connection is recommended. |

The BTECH AMP-25 Series is designed to work with any BaoFeng or BTECH handheld transceivers, but it will also work with any handheld radio that outputs 2 W – 6 W with the appropriate cable. With the included Radio to Amplifier RF Cable, the amplifier will also work with Wouxun transceivers, some TYT transceivers, and some Kenwood transceivers. If the supplied cables do not connect to your radio, you will need to use adaptors or build cables with the appropriate connectors.
Your BTECH AMP-25 amplifier does not include an antenna. It is very important to not transmit without an antenna or dummy load connected to the ANT connector on the rear panel of the amplifier.
Transmitting without an antenna or dummy load may cause harm to the radio equipment.
When choosing an antenna, make sure that it is suitable for the bands you plan on transmitting and receiving on. For example, if you plan on transmitting on 145MHz, make sure that the antenna you select has an SWR of 1.5:1 or less on that frequency. Using an antenna with an SWR greater than 1.5:1 could damage the amplifier.
If you plan to use a magnetically-mounted (mag-mount) antennas, ensure that the antenna is grounded to a metal surface, such as a vehicle body. Magnetically-mounted antennas do not operate properly without a good ground.
- Easily extend the communication range of your handheld radio; Use the AMP‑U25 to create: a mobile radio with a vehicle mounted antenna, a high power field radio with a field deployed antenna, a home/base radio attached to a mast. Your handheld radio connects in seconds and can just as easily disconnect and be taken on the go.
- Kit Includes the necessary cables and interface connectors to easily connect to BTECH and BaoFeng Radios.
- Recommended Accessory: Pair with the BTECH UT-72 Antenna or NMO-72 Antenna & compatible mount for an easy mobile or field deployed solution.
- What's Included: Amp Body, Mobile Mounting Bracket & Screw set, Radio to Amplifier Antenna Cable (SMA Female to SMA Male), Control Cable (K1 to K1), User Manual, Speaker Microphone & Hanger

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this repeater have ctcss/dccss/dtmr privacy capabilities |
Answer: | Yes. It works very well. I use mine to control a set of speakers behind where I normally sit. Just used this to place the RF sensor in front of and it worked perfectly. |
Question: | Is this a booster |
Answer: | Typically you are able to see where the IR sensor of the cable box is by shining a flashlight around the front panel of the box. The sensor window should appear different in color. Also it should round abouthe size of a dime or smaller. Stick the small end on that window, flat side down. Make sure the USB port that you are connected to is always powered. Or use a USB power supply. You aim your remote to the large end. That should work. If does not try using it on another device like a DVD player. If that doesn't work then you have a defective extender. Return it to Amazon and ask for another one. Hope this helps. I had no trouble. |
Question: | Can you tune this to |
Answer: | We have no green light. Only red light on larger receiver module which is on all the time. Works great! |
Question: | You can configure it with these frequencies: low 462,725 / high |
Answer: | Yes! I have a Comcast Xfinity X1 DVR connected to it and for my Apple TV in the same area, they both work perfect. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The description says it has 16 channels, does that change the tx rx frequencies? or just the tone codes |
Answer: | This is a duplexer not a repeater. |
Question: | Will this work with the retevis rt1 uhf radios |
Answer: | This is not a booster or amplifier. This is a duplexer and really not a good one at that. It is used for a repeater that has both inputs for receive and transmit allowing for use with a single antenna. I would recommend a repeater with less than 50 watts output. The duplexer comes pre-tuned for the GMRS frequencies with 462.mhz as the transmit frequency and 467mhz for the receive. Please note: I would not use the duplexer in a facility that has a lot of other repeaters. The duplexer is a notch type duplexer and in area that has more repeaters, it’s best to have a pass/notch as it’s better for better rejection of unwanted frequencies. |
Question: | Can this be used for games radios |
Answer: | Yes it can be tuned to those frets, I have this unit on a uhf repeater and the cactuses tune well take your time . It works well. |
Question: | Can this support multiple ctcss/dcs codes so that different groups don’t hear each other all going through the same repeater |
Answer: | Thanks for your concern on this item. The item in Amazon warehouse was already set the frequency to 462MHz and 467MHz, and Amazon can not set it to other frequency and send to you. But we can tune and ship this product from China to meet your requirement 462.725/467.725. Would you accept this solution?
