10 best digital trunking police scanner
A digital trunking police scanner is a specialized communication device used by law enforcement agencies, emergency services, and hobbyists to monitor and receive radio transmissions from various public safety and emergency services organizations. These scanners are often related to two-way radios and are used for monitoring and staying updated on public safety communications, including police, fire, EMS, and other emergency services.
Here are some key features and information about digital trunking police scanners:
Trunking Technology: Digital trunking scanners are designed to decode and follow trunked radio systems, which are commonly used by public safety agencies. Trunking systems allow multiple agencies to share a set of frequencies efficiently by dynamically allocating channels as needed.
Frequency Bands: These scanners can typically receive signals in a wide range of frequency bands, including VHF (Very High Frequency), UHF (Ultra High Frequency), and digital P25 (Project 25) bands.
P25 Compatibility: P25 is a common digital radio communication standard used by many public safety agencies in the United States. Digital trunking scanners often support P25, enabling users to monitor encrypted and non-encrypted P25 transmissions.
Programming and Channels: Scanners can store and scan a large number of channels, allowing users to program frequencies and talk groups for different agencies and services in their area.
Location-Based Scanning: Some advanced scanners can use GPS to automatically adjust the channels being scanned based on the user's current location, making it easier to monitor relevant agencies as you travel.
Alpha Tags: These scanners often display user-programmable alphanumeric tags for each channel, making it easier to identify the agency or service being monitored.
Recording and Playback: Many digital trunking scanners have the ability to record audio from monitored transmissions, allowing users to review conversations later.
Updates and Upgrades: Scanner manufacturers often release firmware updates to keep devices compatible with evolving radio systems and technologies.
Legal Considerations: It's important to note that while it is generally legal to own and use police scanners for monitoring public safety communications, there may be restrictions on the use of certain frequencies and laws regarding the interception of private or encrypted communications.
Accessories: Various accessories are available for digital trunking scanners, including external antennas and software for programming and control.
Digital trunking police scanners are valuable tools for staying informed about emergency situations and public safety activities in a given area.Users should ensure they are familiar with local laws and regulations regarding scanner use and respect the privacy and security of communications they monitor.

User questions & answers
Question: | will it pickup viper |
Answer: | Yes, This Radio will receive unencrypted calls from the NC Viper system. |
Question: | Will this work with the new Des Moines Ia sytem |
Answer: | Not well. Des Moines is on the Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System (ISICS) which uses many simulcast sites. If you’re in range of two towers broadcasting the same frequency you will have issues. The SDS100 and 200 are the only current Uniden scanners to handle simulcast well. |
Question: | Is this model preprogamed |
Answer: | This uniden BCD996P2 Digital scanner is not preprogrammed, you have to program it your self, Note: it takes a little while to program ,but it can be done, I would recommend theses scanners that are already preprogrammed simply by entering your zip code and they are the Whistler WS1095 digital scanner - Uniden Home Patrol 2 scanner and the Uniden BCD 536HP. I Hope you find this answer helpful. Copsfan |
Question: | Can this 996P2 radio use the Uniden BC-GPSK Serial GPS Receiver for Scanner and Marine Products to get GPS input |
Answer: | I have the 996P2 with this GPS set but what is missing with Uniden is a Bios update as on MENU look into the GPS and on the current BIOS there is NO RANGE. I live in Raynham,Bristol, Massachusetts and why do I get , in my car a frequency of a city over 20 miles . I want to set the GPS only to 5 miles. You have to pressure Paul from Uniden to update the Bios that you may see in looking for Bios for the 996P2 |

Answer: | Hi, thanks for your question! That is correct! Hope it helps. Thanks, Sandee from TIGERSECU, Inc. |
Question: | Does it have a plug-in for Bose headphones |
Answer: | It shouldn’t be rebooting. Based on how many cameras you have and what resolution your recording at determines how many days your records stay on the drive. User questions & answers
Question: | Is this sds200 better than a radio shack pro-197 in shiawassee mi |
Answer: | No. This one is analog you would need digital |
Question: | Will the scanner pic up |
Answer: | Sounds like an antenna problem. Make sure the built-in antenna is securely connected. Also try an external antenna if that doesn't work. |
Question: | Does this come with the telescoping antenna |
Answer: | In 2018, most likely NO. This is an analog scanner. Most police and rescue are using digital systems these days. This isn't the fault of the scanner; you need to buy a digital scanner to hear police and rescue traffic in your area. This is the case in most of the USA in 2018. |
Question: | Does this scanner have a playback function? Sometimes I miss the calls and would like to play back a call |
Answer: | NO you do not need an "OUTSIDE" Antenna! In fact some may even DAMAGE your scanner! One Addition might be a Long Telescoping Antenna with a BNC Connection available on AMAZON that does in fact HELP your reception without damaging your scanner. Don't plan on "RUNNING AROUND" though when it is Connected and extended!! At this writing they go for $9.99 for 2. "Baosity 2pcs 7 Sections Telescopic Antennas w/BNC Connector for Portable Radio Scanner" I've used one on my RADIO SHACK Scanners for quite awhile! Happy Scanning!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | do you have to use a computer? My husband wants a scanner to hear local fire, police, etc reports. Will this one do it |
Answer: | The SDS200 unit had better digital reception, more features and better circuitry than that older discontinued model you mention. The SDS200 can also receive Phase 2 digital systems, which the 197 can't do, and with optional firmware update the SDS200 can monitor DMR and ProVoice Digital, which the 197 can't do. |
Question: | What are the exact dimensions of this unit? I would like to mount this in my semi truck on my rack with my CB radios that are approximately 7 3/4" w |
Answer: | If that is 14218 kilohertz, the answer is no. If the frequency is 142.180 megahertz the answer is yes. |
Question: | Is this radio battery operated or can you plug into electricity |
Answer: | Yes, a telescoping antenna comes included. |
Question: | My metro area uses p25 phase ii for all trunked emergency dispatch. will this scanner be of any use or do i need a different unit |
Answer: | Yes! Your scanner’s Replay feature will instantly replay the transmissions you’ve just heard. You can set how long a period Replay records for instant playback. This period can range from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. |
