User questions & answers
Question: | can you also use AA batteries to power these radios |
Answer: | Yes you can, however the output power will drop drastically (form 5 to I think about 2W) with no indication on the display - it would still show “H” for High power. With the included battery pack though (which is essentially 5 1.2 NiMH AAA batteries in series) it achieves 5W transmit power. Which means if you buy it because of 5W output you must use battery pack. However battery pack does not last long. It is only 700mAh. Radio consumes 42mA on standby. So about 16 hours standby time if you don’t transmit. Charding time on the other hand is 12 hours. Make your own conclusions. |
Question: | what is the best REAL range I can expect |
Answer: | There are certainly many different choices available to folks regarding radio choices. Many consumers, however, fall into the trap of believing the misleading advertising that various manufacturer’s use to help sell their products, especially when they are in panic mode due to a natural disaster (like an earthquake) or (currently) various lock-down scenarios due to the latest overseas virus. One frequently used example of this buying trap are the claims of 35 to 50 mile range from 1/2 watt UHF FRS/GMRS handheld radios with non-removable antennas (frequently seen on various Cobra, Midland, Motorola, and Uniden radios sold at various big box stores or on the internet). At UHF frequencies (and with a decent antenna), you’ll normally get around 1 mile of range for every 1 watt of power on transmit, so a 1/2 watt big box store FRS/GMRS radio is likely to get only 1/2 mile of range, nowhere near the 35 to 50 mile claims shown on the box in large type (with the phrase “under optimum conditions” shown in very small type). What that means is that if one individual is standing near the cliff face on a tall 9,000 ft. high mountain and his friend is doing the same thing 35 miles away (with nothing between the two mountains but air), then they “may” get the 35 mile range as advertised. When both individuals are at ground level, normal range is reduced to a 1/2 mile (or less) depending upon obstructions that may be in their way. |
Question: | How much range can I expect from these radios in rugged, mountainous and forested terrain |
Answer: | Expect |
Question: | do I need a gmrs license |
Answer: | I called the FCC. If the radio goes beyond 2 watts, even if you are only using the lower-power channels, you still need to spend the $70 for the 10 year license. immediate family can use radios with your license (and you on the channel). GMRS will make for a better experience. I would just get it to be safe. |

Answer: | Yes, looks like 4 batteries |
Question: | I previously purchased 2 of these radios. If I purchase 2 more, will all 4 be able to communicate |
Answer: | Yes. Ensure all radios are on the same channel and sub band (if you use sub bands), and you can communicate with all 4 radios. |

User questions & answers
Question: | If you have more then 2 will they all be able to communicate with each other or is a pair locked to each other |
Answer: | These devices have the ability to communicate with any Walkie Talkie tuned to the same channel. they have 36 channels and 121 privacy codes. They are not locked to each other. I have used mine with a buddy's set of Motorola Walkie talkies and they work fine together. I believe I have had around 8 different devices on the same channel and everyone was able to communicate with each other. |
Question: | Why does it say 30 mile range if it only reaches 3 to 4 blocks in city & open space is a couple miles? Seems like dishonest advertising |
Answer: | It's hard to answer this question without adding some basics of radio. These gadgets (FRS Band) operate @ 462+ MHz and indeed is close to "line of sight" (with no obstructions) use, as is everything in this frequency range - this is one of those "Mother Nature is a Bi&$%" things. Couple that with their 500 Mw (1/2 watt) output and it's easy to become disappointed with the range offered. Remember, manufacturers love to tout the best case scenario for their products.Bottom line, these are kiddie toys unless paired with a more powerful (and licensed, as I am) GMRS (Ground Mobile Radio Service) base station using a decent antenna. GMRS licenses are $75 for 5 years and allow operating with up to 50 watts on Ch. 15-22 in this band.de kd5zes |
Question: | What is the minimum (not maximum) range? Used with headsets, could use by 2 diners in noisy restaurant to make talking easier |
Answer: | I'd stay 5' apart while doing so. Loudest cafe I've been in is the King's Road Cafe ... 1/2 mile east of Beverly Hills and 5 block east of Cedars Sinai and the Beverly Mall on Beverly Boulevard in LA. This is a bustling, rustic place that roasts it's own coffee beans and has the best coffee I've ever had in the USA ... the equal to a typical coffee in Switzerland ... $3 for a HUGE pink cup (1/2 coffee and 1/2 steamed milk). And the food is fabulous and reasonable (try well-done salmon atop a veggie salad). The crowd is eclectic ... you may see well-known entertainers at lunch (Renee Zellweger used to hang there). But the noise is DEAFENING! Better to snag a tiny outside table on the sidewalk, just feet from the traffic. And parking is on the street and sparse. Great fun, tho ... just watch out for young gang bangers at night who sneak up and grab rich ladies' bags off their chairs at the outdoor tables ... saw this once. So at night, be sure to eat INSIDE. |
Question: | do you need a license to use these |
Answer: | In 2017 the FCC updated the rules for FRS to allow the license-free use of radios with no more than 2 watts effective radiated power on channels 1 through 7 and 15 through 22. The 1/2 watt limit remains in effect for channels 8 through 14. The FCC also added FRS channels 8 through 14 to the licensed General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) with power outputs of up to 5 watts on channels 1 through 7 and 50 watts on channels 15 through 22. So, if these radios meet the 2 watt/0.5 watt FRS power limits they should be legal to use as license-free FRS units. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long do these radios last with alkaline aaa batteries? 8 hours? one day? two days |
Answer: | I have had to modify stock and other antenna to fit |
Question: | I have 1 left from a set grandson got for Christmas, can it connect with new radios on same channel |
Answer: | No --- I bought RT since I have other radios and RT for them. But you can use open source CHIRP. The RT dongle works better than the generic, btw. The driver for the generic is wonky. |
Question: | How do I remove the belt clip? I bought this and cannot put batteries since I cannot remove the belt clip |
Answer: | The GT3WP is the waterproof version. IP67 (Dustproof, splash proof, Rain proof, rated submersible at a depth of 3ft for 30 minutes.) The GT3WP is a completely different radio from the other GT3's |
Question: | Where are the input jacks located on the radio |
Answer: | Yes, you can do this with your radio with clear and loud results. It also operates on MURS. However, the radio is not certified to do this. So, do not do it or you will die. It is just like if you go 56 miles per hour in a speed limit 55 zone. Do not do that either. You will die. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it water resistant |
Answer: | Yes, resistant to light splashing |
Question: | How many watts? this model clearly has more power than other midland radios because it's listed as gmrs and requires a license |
Answer: | Haha, you have entered the wormhole. These radios are 2.85W according to the FCC filing for the radio FCC ID MMAT295. (Both T290 and T295 have the same ID). Watts can be misleading though, because this radio has a longer internal antenna than the popular GXT1000 and therefore performs a bit better. And to add to your confusion, there are 3 (yes 3) different FCC filing for the GXT1000. The newest GXT1000 radios made after Sept 2018 under FCC ID MMAGXT1050G are now only 2.5w. These radios are junk. If you can find GXT1000s a bit older before 2018 under the FCC ID MMAGXT1050P, those are a bit better at 3.07w. Then there's the totally discontinued GXT1000s manufactured before 2015 that have FCC ID MMAGXT950 that have the full advertised 5.33w. If you can get your hands on these older radios, they are amazing. |
Question: | What is -the power in watts- of these - not the bs miles which is never attainable |

User questions & answers
Question: | What happens if you don't have a lisence |
Answer: | Large fines are possible, I have seen sources that say up to $10,000 and jail time. There is a pending repeal of the license requirement but is currently still required and I think the fee right now is $70 for 5 years and extends to your family for use as well. The site is a bit of a pain to figure out but you will only take a day to have your license. |
Question: | How long is the antenna cable |
Answer: | The packaged antenna cable for the MXT105 is approximately 20 ft. in length. |
Question: | What kind of max range does this thing have |
Answer: | 3 miles without repeater |
Question: | Will this work with midland lxt600vp3 radios |
Answer: | Yes it sure will, the only channels you will not be able to use are 8 - 14 which are set to .5W of power per the FCC. The GMRS MicroMobiles are not programmed with those channels. However, use channels 1 - 7 and 15 - 22 for easy communication between these units! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these have locking channels? Would they work well in an area where there are others using Walkie talkies, such as a campground |
Answer: | you can set the channel as far as others go you just have to find a channel that's open it has 22 so its not hard to do.thats what I do when hunting and there are a bunch of others with radios it works out fine. |
Question: | I understand gmrs band cannot be used with an fcc license. how are these walkies used legally |
Answer: | A GMRS license is only needed when you use over 2 watts of power. This radio can put out up to 0.13 watts of power, so it is well within the 2 watt limit for unlicensed usage in the USA. If you do decide to get a much more powerful radio, with an output of > 2 watts, then you would get a license (as I also have) that costs $70 for 10 years. ($7/year). |
Question: | Does it come with one radio or |
Answer: | sorry for the delay. It comes with 2 radios. |
Question: | how many feet dose it go |
Answer: | In a suburban area with houses, a car dealership and a Wendy's drive-through, approximately 0.4 miles. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this radio for a home base |
Answer: | Yes you can, but you'll need a 110v AC to 12v DC power converter and you'll also need a base station type antenna. I'm not sure why you would use this particular unit though because Midland makes a 40watt unit that would be much better suited to base station use. |
Question: | Are the privacy codes compatible with Motorola talkabout radios |
Answer: | Yes, however, I also have the T600 talkabouts and I was disappointed in the range between the MXT275 and the T600. I live in the city (Boston) in a neighborhood with lots of houses, so I knew that I had obstructions to deal with. But I thought I would have gotten better performance. The MXT to T600 only got about 50-75 feet further than the two handheld T600s got with each other. I am awaiting the upgraded 3db antenna to see if that helps any. Also, just a note, I did some research and the Talkabouts are limited to max power of 1.5 watts. Probably more realistically 1 watt consistently. I decided to pick up a set of the new Midland T295 handhelds.. as they are rated at nearly 3 watts.. probably 2.5 watts more realistically. But thats still a 150% power increase over the T600s so in theory.. I'm hoping the more powerful handheld.. paired with the MXT and the upgraded 3db antenna will have far better performance. I'm sure I'll have far more success with this set up when we use them on camping trips away from the city tho. Cheers. |
Question: | Is the internal speaker in the microphone or in the base unit |
Answer: | There are speakers in both the head unit and the base unit |
Question: | Does this radio have an internal ID that will show up on another radio or be able to be identified if used with a repeater |
Answer: | Don’t be fooled, most users don’t and shouldn’t be required to have a license to use this radio. The other answer that says you are required to have and use a call sign is false. You can get a GMRS license which might be a good thing to have. Now if your setting up a repeater I believe you do need to be licensed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of battery life/usage can I expect from rechargeable batteries |
Answer: | We use about 7 or 8 0f these radios on farm. We usually get around 2 years out of our Tenergy rechargeables. Depending on if staff remember to turn their radios off at night we get around 2 days of use per charge. All in all I'm pretty happy with both radios and batteries. If radios get really wet and don't work do not panic, simply put them in a Dry Warm place for a couple of days and bingo they work again! Good Luck K |
Question: | Does this use regular AA batteries |
Answer: | AAA batteries |
Question: | Do you need a licence for these walkie talkies |
Answer: | No, this unit is actually packaged as a 22-channel "FRS radio", meaning no individual license is needed, assuming no channel works at over 2 watts and 8-14 are limited to one half-watt. If you want a GMRS license for other units, it is currently 10 years for $70, good for the whole family. |
Question: | What all comes in the box |
Answer: | You "only" get the radio. No charger, no batteries. Good question. I had to call the manufacturer to pay for charger and batteries. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How large of a metal ground plane (diameter of a metal disc) do I need to provide for a non-metal mounting on my Corvette (composite panels |
Answer: | I would say at least 6 inches. Seems to work good for me |
Question: | Will the 15w version still be able to operate at 5w for the frs channels |
Answer: | If you operate a radio that has been approved for both FRS and GMRS, and if you limit your operations to the FRS channels with a maximum power of ½ watt effective radiated power and an integral antenna, you are not required to have a license. (Note that some dual-service radios transmit with higher power on FRS channels 1 through 7; these radios can be used without a license only on FRS channels 8 through 14.) |
Question: | Do you need a license to use this |
Answer: | Yes. A GMRS license is required to transmit on this radio. It is $70 for a 10 year license. You need to purchase from FCC. This is not a HAM radio so a HAM license will not work. |
Question: | Is this a CB |
Answer: | No, it’s a 2-way radio that utilizes a different frequency band than C.B.’s. These are GMRS radios which by law you are supposed to have a license from the FCC to operate. The license is not hard to get. It’s a 10 year license for you and your immediate family that cost $70. Which averages out to $7 dollars a year. There is no test, you just go on line and register then submit your fee. I did mine on a Saturday night and it was approved on Monday. |
