14 best handheld radio scanner
Handheld radio scanners are portable devices designed to receive and listen to a wide range of radio frequencies. These scanners are commonly used by hobbyists, radio enthusiasts, emergency responders, and law enforcement personnel for monitoring and staying informed about various radio communications. Here's what you need to know about handheld radio scanners:
Frequency Coverage: Handheld radio scanners can cover a broad spectrum of radio frequencies, including but not limited to:
Police and Emergency Services: Many scanners include frequencies used by local police, fire departments, and emergency services.
Aviation: They often feature aircraft band coverage, allowing users to listen to air traffic control and pilot communications.
Amateur Radio: Handheld scanners can tune into amateur radio bands, enabling users to listen to ham radio operators.
Weather Alerts: Most scanners have NOAA weather radio channels to receive weather alerts and updates.
Marine: Some models include marine band coverage for monitoring maritime communications.
CB Radio: Handheld scanners may also cover Citizens Band (CB) radio frequencies.
Channel Memory: Scanners typically come with memory banks or channels where users can store and quickly access their favorite frequencies.
Search and Scan Functions: Scanners often have search and scan functions, allowing users to scan through a range of frequencies or search for active transmissions.
Priority Channels: Some models support priority channels, where users can designate specific frequencies as high-priority for quick monitoring.
Programming and Updates: Many handheld scanners can be programmed using software and a computer to customize the list of frequencies and other settings. Updates may be required to stay current with changes in radio frequencies.
Display and Controls: Scanners feature LCD displays to show frequency, signal strength, and other information. They also have control buttons and knobs for easy operation.
Audio Output: These scanners provide audio output through built-in speakers or headphone jacks, allowing users to listen privately or share with others.
Rechargeable Batteries: Some handheld scanners come with rechargeable battery options, while others use standard disposable batteries.
Antennas: The quality and type of antenna can affect the scanner's reception. Some models have detachable antennas for better signal reception and portability.
Signal Modes: Scanners can receive signals in various modes, including AM (Amplitude Modulation), FM (Frequency Modulation), and trunked radio systems.
Trunked Systems: Advanced scanners support trunked radio systems, which are commonly used by public safety agencies. These systems use a set of frequencies more efficiently and require scanners capable of trunking.
Encrypted and Digital Systems: Some modern scanners can decode digital and encrypted transmissions, but this often requires specific features and may not be legal in all regions.
Legality: It's essential to be aware of local regulations and laws regarding scanner use. In some areas, listening to certain frequencies, such as law enforcement or emergency services, may be restricted.
Handheld radio scanners are valuable tools for staying informed about various radio communications in your area. They provide a means to monitor public safety, weather alerts, amateur radio, and other interesting transmissions. However, it's crucial to use them responsibly and in accordance with local regulations.

Question: | What about the GPS function? Is it installed in the radio or is that an additional charge? Also, can you attach a remote antenna to this receiver |
Answer: | Hi, thanks for your question! That is correct! Hope it helps. Thanks, Sandee from TIGERSECU, Inc. |
Question: | Does it have a plug-in for Bose headphones |
Answer: | It shouldn’t be rebooting. Based on how many cameras you have and what resolution your recording at determines how many days your records stay on the drive. My setup consists of 16 cameras running at 1080 and recording at 1080 so I only have three days of recordings before the drive start to recycle them. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What batteries can I purchase that will recharge in this unit |
Answer: | the BC125AT is easier to use, this Radio comes included with its own software which is super user-friendly. Programming the Radio manually on the Keypad is also very easy to accomplish. |
Question: | Funciona para comunicacion en 2 vias |
Answer: | This model comes with a USB cable that can be used in conjunction with any 5 volt power adapter-- both wall and vehicle-- and most people find that their phone/tablet charger works well. Please note that while the batteries are charging within the unit the scanner cannot be powered on so I would recommend using an external charger for your rechargeable batteries. |
Question: | Is this scanner analog or digital |
Answer: | Yes, there is a 1/8-inch (3.5 mm) miniplug for earphone or stereo headphones on the top of the scanner. |
Question: | my local police have gone digital will this work |
Answer: | Yes, most if not all passenger and freight operations in the USA and Canada operate around 160 mhz so you can absolutely program the scanner and listen in. The EOT (End of Train) devices, broadcast over the 400 mhz range which you should be able to hear also. (Side note: The EOT broadcast will simply be a beep every so often but helpful to know when a train is coming). |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work with 900 mhz |
Answer: | Hey Drakkenfyre barring any manufacturing anomalies the UV-5R accessories, including batteries and the BL-5L, should be compatible with the 5x3. Essentially they are the same radio outside, just different electronics/firmware inside. If you are unlucky to get one of the bad batteries visit the Miklor.com web site for all information about the radio, and this http://kj4ajp.mambm.com/BL5L/ for repairing the battery to make it fit. Hope this helps. |
Question: | We cannot pick anything up. All static. Occasionally fire department. What's the problem |
Answer: | This radio uses all the battery options and accessories that fit the UV-5R or the BF-F8HP. So yes. You can use both the AAA and the AA battery eliminators as well as the extended batteries.Hope this helps. |
Question: | Can I pick up police frequencies with this? I live in a high crime and would like to listen in to the chatter for pure entertainment purposes |
Answer: | All radio transmitters and some other emitters must have FCC certification. Commercial and public service require Part 90 certification. Other services like FRS and GMRS fall under other parts of the rules. As part of the certification process the FCC issues an FCC ID number for each design of transmitter. I have used the FCC ID to determine the frequency range and modulation type of radios before by doing a Google search of the number. There is also a search page on the FCC site. The only radio service exempt from these regulations is Amateur Radio. Ham radio operators are directly responsible for their emissions and have demonstrated sufficient knowledge of the rules and electronics by passing an exam. Most of the Chinese radios are therefore marketed to Ham radio operators since most do not have any FCC certification. They are also not legal to use on commercial, FRS and GMRS frequencies unless they have the FCC certification number or a sticker with the numbers on them. The UV-5X3 is a perfect example. The sticker under the battery affixed to the radio calls it an Amateur radio and there is no reference to FCC certification or ID. There are some of the UV-5R radios that have a part 90 certification sticker on them but they are mostly the older models like the UV-5RV2+. If programmed correctly so the end user can not operate the radio on frequencies they are not authorized to use they can be used for commercial and public service. They are not certified and are not legal to use for FRS and GMRS even with the part 90 certification. |
Question: | DO YOU NEED AN OUTSIDE ANTENA |
Answer: | We have a 100watt repeater (before 2013) for local / regional and achieve 200 miles every day, and a few long haul repeaters that are 1.5KW to backhaul between other repeaters and their base stations. We could use VoIP between repeaters, we are just blessed to have a mountaintop that we use, and just expanded as another liscense holder gave up their space, so we have another relay tower. For security I won't say where, but you likely have used it without knowing. So listen to everyone here and join your regional and national clubs. They fund 30-40-% of our operations. |

Question: | Does anyone believe this scanner is easier to use than the Whistler |
Answer: | The GPS receiver is installed but you need the plugin GPS antenna that must be purchased separate. (about $100.00)Any antenna can be used with the proper adapter. If you are using a outside antenna you just need to know what type of connector is on the end of the cable coming from the antenna and purchase the proper adapter. The stock antenna is SMA, but it comes with a SMA to BNC adapter. Adapters range in price from 5 - 10 dollars. |
Question: | Can I use an external battery such as used to recharge a iphone to power this? This is to be used at nascar race. Connected by usb |
Answer: | It will not allow most "Noise canceling" headphones as they are 600ohm, and the earphone jack is 32ohm! |
Question: | Does this scanner have a jack for earphones or earbuds |
Answer: | The BCD436HP comes with the handheld unit, a USB cable for data transfer and charging, an SMA to BNC adapter, rubber duck antenna, wrist strap, belt clip, printed manual, and 3 rechargeable AA batteries. It does not come with AC or DC adapters for the USB cable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I know nothing about scanners in general. Is this a good scanner for beginners, and does it come with everything needed to set up and listen |
Answer: | In short, it is a good basic starter scanner. It will get you all analog transmissions from 27Mhz all the way up to 800Mhz.For a beginner scanner though, it can be a little tough to program manually. I learned through google searches and youtube videos. But if you want to just figure out what is going on around you, the scanner is preset to scanner different frequency stretches with the push of a button. So you can tell it to search just the standard police/fire/ems frequencies, or just the aircraft frequencies instead of manually programming.Oh, and yes this comes with enough accessories to permanently (wiring harness) or temporarily (cig lighter) set up in your car/truck or in your home as a base scanner (wall plug).Hope that helps.. |
Question: | What is the difference between the Uniden Scanner model number BC355N and the Uniden Scanner with model number BC355C |
Answer: | The 335N is just an updated model. The BC355C is no longer in production by Uniden instead the newer BC355N is the current production model. Both scanners are essentially the same aside from very minor technical specifications, just one is currently in production and the other isn't. |
Question: | what type of external antenna connector does it take I want to use it in my RV and I have a car type push in plug does that work |
Answer: | This is a helpful tool, now in most area police use a different type of radio. They use a p25 phase 2 to help prevent people from hearing them. The scanner for that kinda of radio comes at a high price! I work in EMS, I use this radio when I’m not working to try to avoid any road that has a MVA. I also go to calls sometimes if man power is requested |
Question: | does the scanner recieve annalog or digital transmissions |
Answer: | Perhaps the a new model was released under the same part number, because there are many answer from 2013 stating this is not a digital scanner and that this is not a trunking scanner, but today in 2017 it clearly is. The description lists P25 Phase I and II as well as X-TDMA. P25 is the digital radio standard for public safety. X-TDMA is the digital standard for multimedia data over radio. There is also a lengthy list of trunking technologies that are supported by this model. Amazon should clean up and delete the old misleading answers as they no longer apply. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this as a search and rescue device and speak with others on 2 way radios whether they have this radio or Motorola’s |
Answer: | It can be used for search and rescue but 2 way are on a different band then ham |
Question: | What is the range of this radio |
Answer: | Probably 8 to 15 miles depending on terrain when used in simplex mode. Using this radio to access 2 meter and 70 cm repeaters would extend the range significantly!! |
Question: | Can you reccomend a good antenna for this as an upgrade |
Answer: | Depending upon which model you buy they also offer a high gain whip antenna which will perform better than the stock one (assuming you are not buying the high end unit at the get go). |
Question: | Can this be programmed to work with a 650 MHz frequency of a fire department broadcast |
Answer: | No, the maximum frequency of the radio is 520 MHz so it does not have enough spectrum to handle 650 MHz. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this radio as a scanner to listen to great lake freighter radio traffic |
Answer: | Yes, but if you only want to listen to voice traffic, a cheaper VHF, without DSC and GPS, will also work fine. Most are about $100 cheaper. This radio is suitable for recreational vessels involved in racing and coastal cruising. |
Question: | is this pair of radios? (2 radios for |
Answer: | Nope, it is a single radio. The two-way designation means it both receives and transmits, as apposed to, say, your car radio, which only receives. |
Question: | how far off shore will this radio work |
Answer: | Dennis, I have only used it in local waters but believe this VHF will work 15 to 20 miles away. If you go off shore (15 to 50 miles) you should rely on a VHF with large antenna etc. |
Question: | If I buy 3 of these radios can I talk and listen to others on the same channel |
Answer: | Recent FCC change makes it legal to talk from shore to a boat on the water. Must restrict oneself to marine related traffic. Effective January 2017, the use of portable VHF radio ashore is allowed, “so long as it is limited to enhancing the usefulness of marine VHF radios without negatively affecting maritime communications.” From BoatUS Magazine, April-May, 2017 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the programming be done on an Apple Mac |
Answer: | Yes it can and it's relatively straightforward IF you have the right cable. You need CHIRP http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Download (get the latest daily build) and then you need this cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HUB0ONK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. The beauty of this particular cable is zero drivers are needed, the Mac (at least Yosemite) automatically recognizes it. I wrote about my experience on this at my blog: https://chris.gonyea.com/2015/03/setting-up-a-baofeng-uv-5r-2-chrip-on-my-mac/ |
Question: | Can I get basic NOAA Weather stations on this everywhere (or, everywhere 'within reason |
Answer: | Yes. NOAA uses 7 frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz. You can check the National Weather Service website at for specific frequencies used in your area. There are over 1000 stations, covering all 50 states. Most NOAA stations operate with fairly high power, some with as much as 1000 watts, so they should be very easy to hear. |
Question: | If you transmitt with this unit how can effected partys trace to the source |
Answer: | Bottom line is this: If you can put out an RF signal you can be found. Yes many variables go into finding the source and they can find moving signals also. Tens of Thousands of hams and or T-Hunters or Transmitter Hunters are around the globe. If you screw around with the HAM bands you will get caught.Get your Ham license it's easy and enjoy the hobby. |
Question: | Can this be used as a FRS 2-way radio |
Answer: | Reasons this makes a good "walkie talkie" (even though it is a HT - Handy Talkie 1) Removable antenna - can upgrade your antenna for your specific needs/significant improvement to performance 2) Can program the channels - not just FRS/GMRS channels 2a) Can set adjust power levels to more legal levels 2b) Can program NOAA freqs giving more value 2c) Can use/listen MURS (Multi Use Radio Service) - license free but kinda like GMRS 2d) Can set channels to receive only so nobody transmits channels they should not (NOAA) 2e) Can listen to school bus drivers, some fire departments and anybody else who uses radio (see 2d) 3) Can get test free GMRS license to legally use GMRS at full handheld power 4) Can get you a HAM license (technician class) and program Amateur UHF/VHF channels - impress your friends and ladies at bars 5) Can monitor two channels at once 6) Lots off menu options - customizable 7) Will learn about radios, "bands", frequencies and other cool stuff 8) Has more power than most walkie talkies - i.e. better range - especially if you upgrade the antenna Reasons this DOES NOT makes a good "walkie talkie": 1) To program you need to purchase the programming cable and to download CHIRP (freeware). Of course only one cable is needs for all the radios 2) Have to read instructions, try stuff on computer/radio and have it not work and you need to figure out why and maybe a youtube video or two. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range |
Answer: | ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club |
Question: | what kind of range can I expect |
Answer: | With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power. |
Question: | I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter |
Answer: | You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html |
Question: | Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you |
Answer: | You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. User questions & answers
Question: | the truck i am currently driving is old and has no cig/12 volt power availible. can i charge this at night and use it without having it plugged in |
Answer: | No you have to plug it in charge it all the way up or wire a 12 v power adapter from the battery in your truck and you can charge it there |
Question: | Would this be a strong enough cb for listening to close (< 1 mile) truck drivers communicate while on the highway without an added antenna |
Answer: | No, it will not likely work. The metal body of the vehicle shields you from the signal of others. I take mine while I am driving on the Interstate. The only thing I have ever picked up is when the truckers are right next to me while I am sitting in traffic and not moving. When I am outside the vehicle, I pick stuff up within a mile or two. Most of the truckers are all using single sideband radios, and you won't be able to pick them up with this radio at all. |
Question: | what is the exact range this can be used if indoors like say im in a apartment my brother is like 2 miles away in a house will it go that far |
Answer: | There is NEVER an exact range for radio communication. The FCC rules require that CB's put out no more than 4 watts. I have accidentally talked to a guy in New Zealand from Ventura, CA and also from there to Florida. Other times you can't talk across town with the same radio. In your situation, if the two of you are in rooms with windows that face each other you can probably talk with two of these radios and no outside antenna. But put a small magnet mount outside your window, on a pizza pan (steel) and run a wire from your pizza pan to your radio and connect it to the outside of the antenna connection and now you have an ok base station antenna and ground plain, and will be able to talk much further. |
Question: | Has anyone used the uniden pro401hh? if so what do you think of it. what is the range of the device and do you think it would work in the woods |
Answer: | I have used this. In an open field was able to get .4 miles. I have not been in the woods yet. |
