14 best general cb radios
Citizen's Band (CB) radios are a type of short-distance, two-way radio communication system used by individuals for personal and sometimes business communication. They operate on the CB radio band, which is a set of 40 channels within the 27 MHz (11-meter) band. Here are some key points about general CB radios and related equipment:
CB Radio Basics:
- CB radios are popular for their simplicity and ease of use. They do not require a license to operate.
- The range of CB radios varies depending on factors like antenna height and terrain but typically covers a few miles to several miles.
CB Radio Channels:
- CB radios operate on 40 designated channels. Channel 9 is reserved for emergency use, while Channel 19 is commonly used for truckers and highway travelers to communicate about road conditions.
Features and Functions:
- CB radios typically have basic controls, including a channel selector, volume knob, squelch control, and a microphone.
- Some CB radios offer additional features like built-in NOAA weather channels, PA (public address) capability, and RF gain control.
Antennas:
- Antennas play a crucial role in the performance of CB radios. Longer antennas can provide better range and reception.
- Antennas are available in various types, including whip antennas for vehicles and base station antennas for home use.
Scanners:
- CB radio scanners are devices that allow users to scan through CB radio channels to listen to conversations.
- While CB scanners can be used for legitimate purposes like monitoring traffic or emergency channels, they can also be used for eavesdropping, which is illegal in many jurisdictions.
Two-Way Radios:
- CB radios are considered two-way radios because they allow both transmission and reception.
- They are commonly used by truckers, off-road enthusiasts, and others who need short-range communication.
Portable Audio/Video Equipment:
- Some CB radios come with features like an audio output for connecting external speakers or recording devices.
- CB radios are primarily used for voice communication, but they can also be integrated with other audio and video equipment for various purposes.
Electronics:
- CB radios are electronic devices that use RF (radio frequency) technology to transmit and receive signals.
- They are powered by DC voltage, typically from a vehicle's battery or a separate power source.
CB radios have been in use for many decades and remain a valuable tool for communication, especially in situations where cellular coverage is limited or unavailable. They are commonly used in trucking, off-roading, and emergency communication scenarios.

Question: | Does it come with everything to install? And can I install to my battery |

Answer: | For any CB radio, the tallest antenna you are comfortable with, mounted as high as possible on the vehicle, will perform best. |
Question: | What is the wattage output |
Answer: | It puts out about 4 watts. I think it gets out better than the other brand radios even after they have been “tuned”. |
Question: | why did it blow its fuse only had a bigger size i put in and works |
Answer: | It can happen if your 12v source had a power surge or if you accidentally crossed polarity. It's better to use recommended fuse size to avoid damaging your radio. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How large of a metal ground plane (diameter of a metal disc) do I need to provide for a non-metal mounting on my Corvette (composite panels |
Answer: | I would say at least 6 inches. Seems to work good for me |
Question: | Will the 15w version still be able to operate at 5w for the frs channels |
Answer: | If you operate a radio that has been approved for both FRS and GMRS, and if you limit your operations to the FRS channels with a maximum power of ½ watt effective radiated power and an integral antenna, you are not required to have a license. (Note that some dual-service radios transmit with higher power on FRS channels 1 through 7; these radios can be used without a license only on FRS channels 8 through 14.) |
Question: | Do you need a license to use this |
Answer: | Yes. A GMRS license is required to transmit on this radio. It is $70 for a 10 year license. You need to purchase from FCC. This is not a HAM radio so a HAM license will not work. |
Question: | Is this a CB |
Answer: | No, it’s a 2-way radio that utilizes a different frequency band than C.B.’s. These are GMRS radios which by law you are supposed to have a license from the FCC to operate. The license is not hard to get. It’s a 10 year license for you and your immediate family that cost $70. Which averages out to $7 dollars a year. There is no test, you just go on line and register then submit your fee. I did mine on a Saturday night and it was approved on Monday. |

Question: | does internal swr meter work well or do i need a seperate meter to tune it correctly |
Answer: | Measuring using internal SWR and external SWR, both measurements are equivalent to almost identical. But the internal SWR meter has a feature where it produces continuous sound when the measurement is 1.0/1.0, and it produces discontinuous beeps when measurement is not 1.0/1.0. This is an excellent feature from President, it does not require to read the display when tuning the antenna length for SWR. No, an external SWR is not needed, should not waste money for one |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this radio have talk back feature |
Answer: | Yes it does a bad ass radio! |
Question: | How about putting a picture of a 497 instead of the 447 would like to see what im buying |
Answer: | Hi, Richard! Thanks for pointing that out. We sellers don't control the product detail pages, we just "contribute" to them. At one time, I had Amazon update this to have correct EVERYTHING on it. The correct images are in our listing. Somehow, this degraded. I have filed a case to put it back the way it was. Amazon is very good about catalog corrections, so you should see the 497 images soon. The 447 and 497 look alike, the difference being the model number that appears on the unit. You can also go to the dot com site of strykerradios to view this. |
Question: | Can this be used on cb channels right of box |
Answer: | No. This is a 10 meter CB and it needs to be taken to CB shop to be converted to an 11 meter. It cost me $40.00 to have this done. Hope this helps you. |
Question: | What is pep watts on this unit |
Answer: | Out of the box it was 90 watts. After I had it converted and peaked and tuned it now has 175 watts |

Question: | Is rhis mic offered with a 5 pin mic plug for Cobra / Uniden |
Answer: | I contacted the seller I bought from and they were very helpful. iSave people may not have that capability though. I did have to take my mic to a CB shop and let them rewire it and it worked great. So, to answer your question, probably. But you will need to have it rewired by an experienced tech. |
