12 best cassette recorder

A cassette recorder, also known as a cassette deck or cassette player-recorder, is an electronic device used for recording and playing back audio content on compact cassette tapes. These devices were popular from the 1960s through the late 1990s, and they played a significant role in the history of audio recording and playback. Here's what you should know about cassette recorders:

  1. Basic Functionality: A cassette recorder typically consists of a cassette deck with at least one cassette compartment, playback heads, recording heads, and various control buttons and knobs. It allows users to play pre-recorded cassette tapes, record audio onto blank tapes, and sometimes features additional functions like fast-forward, rewind, and pause.

  2. Recording Formats: Cassette recorders primarily used two types of cassette tapes: Type we (Ferric) and Type II (Chrome). Type II tapes were known for better sound quality, making them popular for music recording. Some cassette decks also supported Type IV (Metal) tapes, which offered even higher audio fidelity.

  3. Recording Features: Cassette recorders provided various recording features, such as adjustable recording levels, bias settings, and Dolby noise reduction systems. These features allowed users to customize their recording quality based on the source material and personal preferences.

  4. Playback Quality: While cassette tapes were convenient for portable audio, the sound quality was limited compared to modern digital formats. Cassette recorders could produce good sound, but the quality depended on the recording equipment, tape type, and proper maintenance of the playback heads.

  5. Portability: Portable cassette recorders, commonly referred to as "cassette players" or "boomboxes," were popular for their portability. They often featured built-in speakers, AM/FM radios, and the ability to run on batteries, making them versatile for on-the-go listening and recording.

  6. Home Audio Systems: Cassette decks were also integrated into home stereo systems. These high-quality components offered better audio fidelity and additional features for audiophiles and music enthusiasts.

  7. Decline: Cassette recorders started to decline in popularity in the late 1990s as digital audio formats such as CDs and later MP3s became dominant. The compact disc's superior sound quality and convenience led to the eventual obsolescence of cassette tapes and players.

  8. Collectors' Items: Today, vintage cassette recorders and tapes have gained popularity among collectors and enthusiasts. Some individuals seek out these devices for nostalgia, and there is a market for rare or well-preserved models.

In summary, cassette recorders were widely used for recording and playing back audio content on cassette tapes. They came in both portable and home stereo system versions, with varying levels of recording and playback quality. While they have largely been replaced by digital audio technology, they remain a notable part of the history of audio recording and playback.

User questions & answers

Question: can I plug this into my computer
Answer: When recording a mono player to a your computer, use a mono to mono 3.5mm (1/8") phone cable. This will allow you to record the single audio channel from the cassette recorder to the computer's stereo with the same signal for both the left and right channels. You should also be able to set the recording software to record in mono.
Question: Want to purchase a recorder for my elderly father to tape his memoirs. Would this be a good find
Answer: Yes. This recorder is NOT THE BEST, BUT CERTAINLY NOT THE WORST. I got it for Taping Music. I am a Musician and Singer and it DOES NOT DO WELL FOR THAT, BUT. For Talking, Yes. It would be good. One tip. Don't hold the Microphone too close to your mouth, It will blur when you record. Hold it a few inches away and it will be fine. Talking records much better than singing, or music. So if you want it for that, Yes. And the price is good, and you can use Battries or the Outlet. Hope this helps. Annie/ Houston, Tx
Question: is it eletric & battery
Answer: Yes. Runs on both AC and battery.
Question: Could I plug my phone into the mic jack and then record some songs from phone to a cassette
Answer: Not easily, no. The mic jack on this recorder is mono only. So a standard 3.5mm stereo cable won't do the trick. You would need a 3.5mm stereo to 3.5mm mono cable (or adapter). The resulting audio, of course, will be in mono only. Also, the recording head on this cassette recorder is very, very poor. I wanted to record audio for my truck and the quality was just way to low for music. It is really better suited for voice recording.

User questions & answers

Question: does this have wired wired remote start and stop
Answer: No, the usb cable is just for power.
Question: Does it have an input for a microphone
Answer: In Dec2020, with my black model, it works with ferric and chrome type tapes, and technically plays metal but sounds a bit “off”. Hard to describe and many average users may not notice this at all, but for a cheap cassette player - this works
Question: does this record audio and store lots? i usually record my audio keyboard playimg with my phone but im out of storage now. It would be nice
Answer: No, I do not have cleaners. The player eats batteries like popcorn. Batteries only last for 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Have to take the batteries out after a half hour use and put back when ready to use again or the batteries go dead. Not a good buy.
Question: Is it possible to record from computer directly without holding up a mic to a speaker? is there direct line in recording, to go from mp3 to cassette
Answer: Full size cassette not the micro type.

Question: Can this Boombox be synced to be Bluetooth headset
Answer: Yes I have used them over twice that distance.
Question: Does this boombox stream data from your device such as Pandora and Iheartradio, etc
Answer: It is a 5 Amp supply @12V. As long as the total power draw of your 8 cameras is not over 5 Amps you should be fine. Most new cameras draw about 300mA (8x 300mA is 2.4Amps) so you have enough overhead left to hookup a 2 Amp DVR as well.
Question: Is it only battery operated
Answer: Mine has lasted a long time. I'd contact Amazon for a refund.

    User questions & answers

Question: Does the cassette player automatically play side B or do you need to flip the tape
Answer: Yeah. Fine for jotting down ideas. Naturally, if you were to play the amp on 20, I'm sure it would distort and sound bad. What wouldn't? The idea here, is a cheap and convenient way to electronically remember those ideas...that uses those cheap and old cassette tapes that are laying around.
Question: do you have to have the detached mic, or does this also have a built in mic
Answer: New and unopened. We needed it to play dictations back so the staff could type them up. It's worked perfectly so far!
Question: Can I record a message off my cell phone
Answer: I don't know what the other model is that's 29 dollars but I am a court stenographer and this one has a very good sound quality. But I also have as extras a brand thats 20 bucks and I always use external mic and the sound is good. It's a company with letters for a name. Jensen has been around for years. I'm happy with mine. And if the sound isnt good for recording I use ththeththem fir play back.
Question: does this recorder use regular size tapes or the mini tapes
Answer: Yes, it's about the size of a shoe box in length. Definitely not a walkman and also not stereo (mono only). Good product for voice audio recordings, transcriptions, etc.

    User questions & answers

Question: i need to know what soft wear program i need to make to work on lap top
Answer: I have used both Audiicity and WavePad by NCH software. Both are free downloads, WavePad has somwhat better documentation/Help and can be upgraded to some pretty serious sofware.
Question: What is the width of this
Answer: The width is 17" X depth 10 3/4" X height 5 3/4" (including air space of circular coasters)
Question: Does this have a "seek" function? I want to FF thru blank sections & stop at any audio on the tape. I'm archiving amateur cassettes w/o track info
Answer: Unfortunately, this tape deck model doesn't have the seek function. I've seen Sony tape decks have that feature. Try a Goodwill or a Salvation Army store to purchase a used Sony tape deck. Good Luck Mary.
Question: Does this unit record stereo (2 channel) MP3s from stereo cassettes, using Audacity as the sound program
Answer: Windows controls whether you get mono (in "both" channels) or stereo. With the deck connected via USB, open Control Panel, Sound, pick your input, and set Windows to use 44.1kHz sampling 16-bit 2 channels. (USB defaults to 1 channel, but this is where you change it.)

Answer: Actually it is neither. The DTR600 operates at 900 MHz on the ISM band and does not require an FCC license. The DTR600 will communicate with other Motorola radios that operate on the 900 MHz ISM band like the DLR, but will not communicate with UHF or VHF radios.
