User questions & answers

Question: Would a 25 watt rms per channel tube amp work with these
Answer: I purchased the 580’s, but I would think they would work,
Question: What is a good amplifier for these JBL 580?? i have heard that yamaha and marantz are both good and how many watts are recommended
Answer: I drove the 570s with avr3700. Sounded great however I don't recommend Harmon kardon amps. Buggy and their UI is horrible. Like almost unusable. Trying to do a source change is impossible without a flashlight. That's how bad it is.
Question: Can anybody that purchased these speakers recommend/tell me what cables to buy and whether they need banana plugs or clamp down exposed cables
Answer: I use dual banana plugs with these - easy connection. (Like these: https://www.radioshack.com/products/gp-dual-banana?variant=5717654085). As far as cable, I've been using this: https://www.radioshack.com/collections/maker-parts-kits/products/16-gauge-speaker-wire-1?variant=5717683781
Question: Can I use Yamaha RX-V673 for this speaker? Would this be too cheap for this speaker
Answer: Thing to note on these speakers is that they run at 6 Ohms. It will drive your receiver harder but will also simultaneously give you more power. Looking at the Spec's of the RX-V673 the dynamic power at 6 Ohms is 170W per channel. This should be able to drive it OK. These speakers do benefit from a capable and powerful amplifier. In my application I have powered them from both a receiver and dedicated 250W per channel amplifier. If you are thinking of getting these I would suggest sticking with the receiver you suggested since it is capable of driving the 6 Ohm speaker. If it feels like they are under-powered you can get a separate 2CH amp and run the receiver pre-outs to it or simply get a more powerful receiver but I think you will find the receiver will drive them just fine.

User questions & answers

Question: The long excursion powered subwoofer provides powerful, quality bass" is not correct? This is a passive speaker system
Answer: The hissing noise does exist when the receiver is on but it's really not that noticeable. It doesn't really bother me. Of note is that if you use the HDMI thru feature, the hissing sound does persist even when the receiver is off(in standby mode)
Question: can you use these in a small bedroom, a 12 x 10 or is it too much speaker
Answer: I bought mine in Nov '12 and it finally died last night. At first I thought my 1 yo nephew had randomly pushed some buttons and changed the settings, but after about an hour of troubleshooting I finally did an online search and found the Onkyo repair/upgrade website. I think it's great that this company realizes that they have a problem and are willing to make it right even 2 years beyond the warranty period! My new TX-NR646 should be here Monday!

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this for karaoke
Answer: My experience with Onkyo is that the hdmi switching is defective and the authorized service center gave the excuse that I bought too cheap of a model for the switching to work properly.
Question: What are the connection options to these speakers? bluetooth? aux? hdmi
Answer: And you are set to BD/DVD as the source on receiver? Also set to HDMI 1 on the TV? Did you do an initial setup in the receiver menu?
Question: Are these 8 ohm
Answer: well, it happened to me about 3 months ago. Totally bricked and useless. I looked it up here and all over the net... and it's just a bad unit and everybody's broke. I gave up and got my 20 year old Onyko unit out of the garage. Doesn't do much and there are limitations, but it sounds better. I don't have the $$ to fix it. Such a drag. At least it's not a SONY it might have broken sooner! :-)
Question: This is sold as a pair
Answer: I have not had any issues with the device; and, it sounds great with the speakers and sub-woofer I have connected to it. I live in an apartment so I don't get to use it to it's full potential often, but there have been a few times I cranked it up to see what it can really do, and it did not disappointed. Sure a large factor when it comes to the quality of sound has to do with the speakers that are attached, but music and movies come in crisp. All of my devices (except for Ethernet) are attached via HDMI. The HDMI pass-through works great with no loss in quality, even when the device is turned off. Having the ability to attached all of the devices to the reliever and then only have one HDMI running up to the TV makes it much easier to have a clean-looking cable setup running out of the TV. **NOTEs** 1) I'm not a fan of 3D at home, so I cannot tell you how well the HDMI pass-through would handle the increased data requirements of 3D.2) I live in an apartment which is not set up well when it comes to using the 2nd zone option on the receiver, so I cannot speak to how well that function works.

User questions & answers

Question: I just got this and i can not get this to connect to my jbl extreme.. i believe it is because the new connect button.. anybody else have this issue
Answer: Here's the most likely solution (my comments copied from another website about the JBL Connect app). I finally figured out how to make the JBL Connect app work, so that it now plays in stereo mode through my two Flip 3 speakers (left channel comes out of one speaker and right channel comes out of the other speaker) with virtually no dropouts. The key is to connect ONLY ONE speaker when you make the initial Bluetooth pairing under your device's Settings (Apple iPad: Settings/Bluetooth in my case) otherwise Bluetooth continually tries to connect with the other speaker, causing interference and repeated dropouts. It may say that one of the speakers is "not connected" but just ignore that. The important thing is to NOT have both speakers connected under your device's Bluetooth settings. Only one speaker should appear as connected here, so do whatever it takes to disconnect second speaker from Bluetooth, or make it "disappear": turn the speaker's power off and then back on, turn the iPad's Bluetooth switch off and then on again, click on "Forget this device", etc. (and DO NOT RENAME either speaker—it causes problems with the Connect function.) Then, with only one speaker paired via Bluetooth (but both speakers turned on) press the Connect button on each speaker (the button with the bowtie-shaped icon) and wait for both speakers to connect to each other. The bluetooth-connected speaker takes over and sends out the signal to the other speaker via the Connect function. Once you have done this setup procedure you don't have to repeat it. You will only have to turn on your device's bluetooth, turn on both speakers and press both "Connect" buttons (in most cases you won't have to press the speaker's bluetooth button— one speaker should pair automatically to your iPad or other device via bluetooth, once you have done the initial pairing). If you experience any problems, simply turn the power off both speakers, and then back on again and press the Connect button on each speaker again. Doing it a second time always works if the first attempt is unsuccessful, (or if, sometime later after listening for a while, you hear any dropouts) but usually the first attempt works with no problem.
Question: Can you put it in the pool
Answer: We use ours for the pool. We leave it on the edge and it has been knocked in a few times and it’s still works great. But we don’t just let it float
Question: does this have a 3.5 mm jack
Answer: The JBL Flip 3 and Flip 4 had a 3.5mm jack, the Flip 5 does not. It is 16w total, each speaker can handle about 8 watts. It weighs about 1 pound. The Flip 3 was the best of the Flip series, Loud with lots of Bass, Long Battery life, microphone and 3.5mm inpui jack. Flip 4 were not as loud and did not threw off as much bass as the Flip 3 and had less battery life. The Flip 5 has less power/volume, less bass and the worst battery life and no 3.5mm input jack and no microphone, so you cant answer calls with the Flip 5. JBL has gone down the tubes! If you are looking for good, bass booming sound, get a Harmon Kardon Onyx-1, those were the best! But avoid the Onyx-2 to Onyx-5 they are awful.
Question: can you please tell me how much it weight
Answer: I can also connect with tv this speaker?

User questions & answers

Question: Are these speakers biamp ready
Answer: All Subwoofers are powered. The rest of the system is passive
Question: Can this speaker work with just a crossover or turntable
Answer: It depends on how much space you want to sacrifice. As you place the speakers away from the walls for better sound, it might get tight. My bedroom is about the same size and I power my pair with Denon DRA-800H. I do not find them to be "too much speaker" but if I added a dedicated amplifier then sure, it would be too much.
Question: Would a Behringer pmp4000 powered mixer work with these speakers. these would be for a small church with intentions of future growth
Answer: Onkyo site? I do not have source otherwise
Question: can i connet ipad or microphone in the back on this speaker ???? thank you
Answer: Hi JT, You can find the manual at this site: http://www.intl.onkyo.com/downloads/manuals/pdf/tx-sr508_manual_e.pdf On page 26 it has these instructions: Step 1 Select the preset that you want to delete. To select a preset, use PRESET e/r on the AV receiver, or the remote controller's CH +/-.Step 2 While holding down MEMORY, press TUNING MODE. The preset is deleted and its number disappears from the display.

User questions & answers

Question: Why are there two sets of wire inputs on the back of the speaker
Answer: See this well written article on it, I am actually going to buy the wires myself after reading up on it despite the much higher price tag, but they are a good price on amazon, other have written they are $100 at Best Buy but $30 on Amazon -- http://www.chord.co.uk/help-and-information/speaker-cable-guide/bi-wire-or-single-wire/
Question: does anyone know why it has 2 sets of wire inlets on each speaker? Normally it's one set black and red
Answer: The 2 sets of speaker 5 way binding posts are for bi-wires or bi amps if you remove the bridges so you can by-pass the speaker cross-over. It's a waste of time and money since you will need an external cross-over. I wouldn't bother with it at this price point. They are as good as you can get for the price.
Question: Why do these have a set of two connections at the back? Is it for two audio sources
Answer: Oh my gosh please disregard any of the stupid people who said its benefits are debatable, or that it helps midrange. Those people shouldn’t answer questions about things they obviously know nothing about. I’m reporting those answers as not only wrong but intentionally ignorant. The truth is most people have their front 2 mains wired to the receiver. Today’s receivers are 7.1 and more 9.2.4 or 11.2.whatever. However most users choose not to wire speakers to the extra surround and Atmos channels. 5.1 being fine. So in addition to wiring the entire speaker to just the front Left and Right, you can remove the metal connecting both sets of posts. Leave the original speakers wires. Now go into your receivers set up menu and go to speaker set up. Most receivers have a selector for if you’re using the front-above speaker option. If not, now you can run a 2nd speaker wire to both speaker and connect to the 2 unused posts. The immediate benefit is that instead of only 2 of the amp’s 100w channels pushing the whole Left and Right, you now have 4 of the amp’s 100w channels pushing your speakers. Each speaker gets 200w.
Question: Is there a "practical"reason for these speakers to have so many individual speakers inside them
Answer: Yes. Oversimplifying but hopefully still useful: There's an ugly trade-off between bass quantity and quality. Larger drivers have more surface area (volume really, as a speaker is effectively an irregularly-shaped piston for pushing and pulling air). More surface area means more bass. But it also means more inertia and typically sloppy or booming (mid-)bass lacking in detail or transient response ("edges"). Smaller drivers respond faster and create tighter, punchier, more accurate (mid-)bass because it can respond faster, but less low bass due to the reduced surface area. Using multiple smaller drivers is an attempt to retain the tight and accurate mid-bass but also team the drivers up to move enough air to extend the bass down low. It's an attempt to keep the best attributes of both approaches. However, real bass-heads might still want a little more low bass. Fortunately, really low bass (say 20-60 Hz) isn't particularly critical and you can get away with a massive woofer like 12" or even 15". For this, a subwoofer is perfect. If you add a subwoofer to a speaker like this, be sure to cross it over well below 100 Hz, as you paid for bass accuracy and you wouldn't want to degrade it by too much overlap. Think of the subwoofer as turning your 3 way speakers into 4 way speakers. You don't want much overlap. As with any free audio advice, take nobody's word for anything and experiment for yourself. Every room and every ear is different, so I might be all wet. That said, there' s the rationale, in a nutshell.
