11 best preamps
A preamp, short for "preamplifier," is an electronic device used in audio systems and home theater setups. It serves several important functions related to audio signal processing and amplification. Here is what you should know about preamps:
Signal Amplification: The primary function of a preamp is to amplify weak audio signals. These weak signals may come from various sources, such as microphones, musical instruments, turntables, or other audio sources. The preamp increases the signal's voltage level to a level suitable for further processing and amplification.
Signal Conditioning: Preamps often incorporate equalization (EQ) controls that allow users to adjust the tone or frequency response of the audio signal. This can be used to enhance or attenuate certain frequency ranges to match the desired audio output.
Low-Noise Operation: A good preamp is designed to provide clean and low-noise amplification. This is crucial for maintaining audio quality and minimizing unwanted background noise or interference.
Input Selection: In some cases, preamps may include multiple input channels or inputs for various audio sources. This allows users to switch between different sources easily.
Output Connectivity: Preamps typically have both input and output connectors. The output signal is usually passed on to a power amplifier, receiver, or another amplification stage in an audio system.
Phono Preamps: Phono preamps, also known as phono stages, are a specialized type of preamp designed specifically for turntables. They include a built-in equalization curve to properly reproduce the audio from vinyl records.
Home Theater Integration: Preamps are often used in home theater systems as part of an AV receiver. They can handle multiple audio sources, provide signal processing for surround sound formats, and manage volume control.
Tube vs.Solid-State Preamps: Preamps can use either vacuum tubes (valves) or solid-state components (transistors). Tube preamps are known for their warm and vintage sound, while solid-state preamps are generally more reliable and have a cleaner, more accurate sound.
Rack-Mountable Preamps: Some preamps are designed for professional audio setups and are rack-mountable, making them suitable for studio recording and live sound applications.
Integration in Audio Systems: Preamps are often integrated into larger audio systems, such as stereo systems, recording studios, and concert sound systems, to ensure optimal signal quality and control.
Compatibility: When choosing a preamp, it's important to consider compatibility with other audio components in your setup, such as microphones, instruments, and amplifiers.
In summary, preamps are essential components in audio systems, home theaters, and professional audio setups. They provide signal amplification, signal conditioning, and noise control to ensure high-quality audio output. The choice of preamp depends on the specific audio sources and preferences of the user, as well as compatibility with other components in the audio system.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this thing have an/off switch or do you need to plug/unplug everytime you use it |
Answer: | no switch. You can plug/unplug, I leave it plugged in all the time. |
Question: | Unit works fine for awhile and then starts outputting static, even with no input connected. I've tried it with several amps with the same results |
Answer: | Most likely people who are having noise problems it is because of ground loop isolation problem. If you have a ground loop isolation problem grounding the preamp box is unlikely to help. Without getting technical, what you want to buy is a ground loop isolator or a humm eliminator; both the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator tackles the cause of the noise at the fundamental source of the problem, depending on your audio setup, one maybe easier to use than the other. To use the ground loop isolator or the humm eliminator they generally come with instructions, or you can google this topic. If the noise in your audio system isn't fixed by using this solution the first time, try putting the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator at various points in your audio system. Also you can talk to audio people and get advice about how to fix ground loop problems from people who setup big audio systems, for concerts and such; if you talk to the average electronic garage shop audio enthusiast you are likely to get bad advice, i.e., meaningless explanations. Also caution must be used when Googling this topic, much of the discussion, advice and explanation on this topic is bogus, you can get a general correct feel of this topic if you read a number of explanations. Also one more thing that can cause a "popping noise" is that you have too much gain, this is a phono amp and the gain is huge, it takes a 3mV and makes it 2Vp-p this is a gain of around 100 to 200, if you gain up the audio signal too much then the signal out of your amplifier runs out of head room and clips, this can cause a popping sound, essentially you have too much gain. If this is occurring you need to either buy a preamp with less gain or attenuate the signal before it gets to the preamp. If this is a problem, too much gain, you can buy preamps with gain control. |
Question: | My turntable has very quiet output. Will this device help boost the volume |
Answer: | Yes, indeed. If your need was like mine (no built-in pre-amp on the turntable and no specifically dedicated phono input on your amplifier) you will find this unit to be the perfect solution to needed amplification of the turntable's output. Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio. |
Question: | My amp DOES have a Phono Input, but my cartridges are low output. Can I use this to boost the signal using the Phono Input to reduce audible hiss |
Answer: | No, you can't. This is a phono preamp with RIAA playback equalization that amplifies the signal about 100 times, so it essentially does what your built-in phono preamp does. The output signal from the separate preamp is equalized to a nominally "flat" frequency response and the amplified signal level will overload and probably damage your built-in phono preamp. Plug it into any other stereo line input on your system (AUX, CD, DVD, TAPE, VCR, etc.), but NOT the PHONO input! If you need higher signal gain, maybe look at phono preamps from ART or TCC that have output level controls. If you use moving-coil (MC) cartridges, you need a preamp specifically designed for them...they require at least 55 dB (over 500 times) signal gain vs. about 40 dB (100 times) for moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. Noise becomes a critical issue with MC cartridges because of their extremely low signal output, so good-quality cables and good turntable grounding are essential. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Been using a simple input/output type, so does this model come w/ detailed instructions |
Answer: | You really don't need instructions as this unit is clearly marked. Just be sure to connect the ground wire from your turntable to the preamp to stop any hum. |
Question: | Can this be used to boost signal output from a digital tuner box on the way to amplifier |
Answer: | No. This pre-amp is strictly for pre-amplifying (hence the name) the very low voltage output signal from a magnetic (MM) cartridge. The output of the pre-amplifier is then connected to an auxiliary input jack of a receiver. |
Question: | Will this work so i can listen to my vinyls with headphones |
Answer: | Yes, there is a 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel. If your headphones/earbuds us a 1/8" plug you will need a 1/8" to 1/4" stereo headphone adapter which are readily available. Also, for best results make certain that your turntable is grounded to the unit. |
Question: | can this be used for ripping vinyl |
Answer: | This small unit is strictly for providing power from your receiver to your turntable. I had an old receiver that had an outlet for my turntable to plug into, so the power source came from there. I recently had to purchase a new receiver (previous one mentioned was 40 years old and owed me nothing) but it did not have an outlet for my turntable. I needed to purchase this item to connect the two components. Now I am good to go. It has nothing to do with ripping or recording. |

Fresh Sound for Vintage Record Players
The GOgroove Phono Preamp Pro boosts your turntable's phono audio level up to a more speaker/stereo receiver-friendly line level , giving you better volume and increased sound quality. If you're planning on hooking up your turntable to a computer , stereo receiver , bookshelf speakers , or any other modern audio equipment , you're going to want thew new pro preamp to get the high sound quality that you expect from vinyl.
Modernize Your Equipment
You'll want the preamp to connect to the phono output of the turntable and the line input of the receiver/speakers. And even newer turntables that may feature a built-in preamp probably aren't going to give you the highest quality sound that could be achieved from an external preamp. The new pro preamp is equipped with both RCA and DIN outputs that you can connect to amplifiers, mixing units, and recording units. The RCA plugs provide a better balanced sound with less distortion and the DIN outputs give you the ability to stream even the oldest of your vinyl records. The DIN outputs give you the freedom to connect to your old school record player without losing the sound quality.
Clear Sounding Audio
Complete with RIAA equalization which recognizes that the phono preamp creates smooth equalization for balanced, clear audio. This certification also gives the pro preamp less emphasis on low frequencies and more on high frequencies.
On-Board Controls
The front of the preamp has a built-in in 1/4 headphone port with a monitor knob that controls the volume of your music so you can listen in peace. A clip indicator blinks letting you know what parts of your music are the loudest and the input gain lets you control the sound so there is no distortion. Included is a filter button that rolls off the low end and eliminates "turntable rumble" that frequently occurs with other low-end preamps. Not sure if it's on or off, no problem! Our new enhanced preamp comes quipped with a power button that lights up when it's on. Now you can shut off the unit without having to unplug it!

User questions & answers
Question: | If I have a record player without a Preamp, will this help me with hooking it up to a Sonos |
Answer: | You can hook it up to anything with a red and white connection. Or if you get the rca to 3.5mm jack then you can hook it up to anything with an input slot. I used this on my realistic lab 440 which doesn't have a preamp. Once I connected the ground from my turntable into the ground slot on this amp, my music sounded loud and clear. |
Question: | mp |
Answer: | Turntables (with typical magnetic cartridges) have very low signal output (a few thousandths of a volt). Records have the bass reduced to provide enough room on the surface for the recorded grooves, and the treble boosted to reduce the surface noise level when played back. A phono preamplifier performs two jobs: - It boosts the small signal from the turntable by about 50 to 100 times (producing a "line level" signal) so it can be used by typical receivers or amplifiers.- It also boosts the bass and reduces the treble according to an industry standard (the RIAA equalization curve) to restore the signal from the record to its original frequency response. The Pyle PP999 is just an inexpensive phono preamp, nothing special. Phono preamps can range from $20 on up to whatever you're willing to pay for ultra-high quality. Some manufacturers make "USB" phono preamps that have A/D (analog-to-digital) converters built in and connect to a computer's USB port. Most of these provide "CD quality" conversion (16-bits at 44kHz or 48kHz). These may be adequate for digitizing your vinyl, but many computer sound systems can provide up to 24-bit, 192 kHz conversion depending on the software you use (much higher quality), by connecting the preamp output to the computer's line input. Don't just convert directly to MP3 files...you'll lose too much detail compared to the original vinyl sound. It takes almost no time to make an MP3 copy of a high bit-rate WAV or FLAC (lossless) file, but it'll take you an hour to make ANY digital copy of an LP, so do it the best you can the first time! |
Question: | So this is a stupid question, I plug my RCA wires coming from my turntable into the Amp. But where do I plug the speaker wires into on the Amp |
Answer: | TurnTable==>PreAmp==>Receiver/Amplifier==>SpeakersThe 'Pyle PP999' is the "Preamp". The Turntable is plugged into the PP999 INPUT and the PP999 OUTPUT plugs directly into any (non Phono) INPUT on the receiver. Your Receiver allows you to switch between different music-sources, contains the primary-amplifier and distributes the final sound out to the speakers(and subwoofer). The Receiver should have multiple inputs for receiving signals from eg. CD, Tape, VCR, etc. In my experience those labels are for convenience and interchangeable with the exception of a "Phono" input. NOTE: If the receiver has a "Phono" input then there's a built-in preamp. If your using an external preamp (Pyle PP999) do NOT plug it into the Receiver's 'Phono' input, it could cause damage. I plug the preamp for the turntable into the Receiver's 'VCR' or 'TV' inputs. |
Question: | I have the Pyle turntable and Pyle stereo but they don't work together--VERY low sound--so is this the missing piece |
Answer: | Turntables (with typical magnetic cartridges) have very low signal output (a few thousandths of a volt). Records have the bass reduced to provide enough room on the surface for the recorded grooves, and the treble boosted to reduce the surface noise level when played back. Most modern receivers DO NOT have the right inputs to deal with this signal (no "phono" input). Question: | How easy is it to replace the tube sockets in this unit? Some were screwed up on receipt and I may have damaged others replacing tubes |
Answer: | Solid state, uses discrete components. Very neutral sounding and has a very open soundstage. |
Question: | How many dB of gain can it add to the input signal |
Answer: | I've no idea. I gave it away. It wasn't what I needed. It did work fine, but it didn't have a actual On/Off switch which was a bother. |
Question: | ax7 tubes are noted for a treble shrillness. is this noticeable on this unit? can the 12ax7 tubes be rolled to lower-gain 12at7 tubes |
Answer: | Yes, the RCA out on your tape deck will connect directly into the PA550 and the adjustable treble will give it more boost. |
Question: | Can you tell me what size is the pot shaft for the knobs on the front - if I wanted to order nee knobs. This would be the size opening on the backsid |
Answer: | Yes, plug your turntable into the PA550 phono input. Plug the output of the PA550 into the input of the SE560 then use the output of the SE560 to go to your amp or preamp. Works perfectly. When first set up, set the level controls of both units half way up. |

Question: | Can i connect this to a audio interface via xlr |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Can i use this as a preamp for my presonus audiobox usb |
Answer: | Yes, it should work fine. Your mic or instrument goes direct into the pre-amp and then just run a short cable from the output of the pre-amp into the channel input of the audio box you want to use. I got one of these recently and am pretty happy with the sound and ease of use. I did take others advice though and swap out the tube for a higher quality one which is pretty easy to do. |
Question: | How to do I connect this to a Audio Interface |
Answer: | This is a microphone preamp, not an audio interface. You would run your microphone to an input on this Presonus, and then there is either an XLR or 1/4 output that you would plug into another USB-type audio interface to go into a computer. |
Question: | Can you run a line and XLR input through this at the same time and have each go to their respective outputs (separate)? Sort like a 2 channel pre |
Answer: | I do not know if this is possible as it is a one channel pre. I would imagine the input /output is either/or. Can't say for certain without trying but I only have one mic. |

Question: | Can i play vinyl from my B&O 3400 turntable & cartridge thru a vizio soundbar model# s4251w-b4? Do I need to use my pyramid sea2500x preamp too |
Answer: | Most likely. I go from my record player to this to a mixer. So I'm guessing your receiver probably has an aux in which is what you plug into from the art. |
Question: | Do i need to buy this for yamaha A-s801 integrated amp or that amp has a phono |
Answer: | Sansui? Ceramic's, as I recall, can run close to 1 V output. This preamp is designed for moving magnet cartridges (not moving coil) that produce ~ 5 mV output. Even at -10 dB on the gain/attenuation knob, it would still be too hot. 1 V with -10 dB attenuation is ~ 300 mV which is far more than supported. Per manufacturer, max input is 40 mV. So, no, this won't work with your ceramic cartridge. |
Question: | Just to be clear, my AVR (Onkyo tx-nr535) doesn't have a phono input. Do I connect the turntable to this device and plug this device into my AUX port |
Answer: | Without a ground wire, there may be a discernible hum. I have a Yamaha PF 1000 and the ground wire is is a must. |
Question: | How can i tell if my pioneer pl-460 is mm or mc |
Answer: | I've had both, and kept the DJpre. There's a thread on an audio science forum where a user conducted a thorough level-matched test of both the Pluto and the DJpre with an oscilloscope and other precision instruments. They both performed very well, but the DJpre came out decidedly on top in several key categories. Whether that translates to a noticeable difference in sound quality depends on the listener, but the DJpre is empirically better than the already good Pluto. He also found that the DJpre performed best when the low cut rumble filter was on--not only did it kill the sub-20hz sounds, it actually boosted the audible frequency response across the board (particularly the highs where the Pluto tends to roll off). This is easily the best phono pre at $50 and under, and performs better than units costing twice as much. You'd have to spend $250+ to get a better pre, and even then it'll only be a miniscule improvement. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is the Input located on this? I only see output |
Answer: | Mine appears to be coated aluminum... |
Question: | Will this system increase the volume of my phono |
Answer: | I have not used a wireless sub of any kind with this unit, but I would be surprised if this worked with a BT sub. The BT on this unit as far as I have read will pair with a device as an “input” to the receiver for audio but will not transmit to an external device. I would not count on using it this way. |
Question: | Can the amp wake up from standby when it receives a signal |
Answer: | Yes I am driving elac unifi ub5 with this. Kept it on 8ohm but can be switched to 4 ohms if you don’t want to live adventurously |
Question: | Does the volume control the output of the line levels, as well as the headphone |
Answer: | I just purchased this receiver. N803 and YES, hooked up my EQ. Here is how. 1st depends on how many INPUTS you have on your EQ. Mine has 6. Plug in devices you have into INPUTS you have on back of EQ. Phono, Tape, Tuner, Aux, etc. Device name is only to help you remember what is hocked up. where. You could plug in CD player into Tuner INPUT. It's just a memory thing. Now your OUTPUT on the EQ, hook to the back of your RECEIVER IN LINE 2 OR 3. NOT 1. You need an OUTPUT. This would be like adding a reel to reel to tape to. But you don't have to. [1 doesn't have an output.] I hooked up to [Line2] on receiver. Turn dial on receiver to [Line 2]. Control your devices you want to listen to on EQ, not the receiver. Receiver will always be [Line 2]. this set up allows you, if your EQ has memory to program each device, save the settings from one device to another. Change settings by a push of a button. You get double the punch. EQ plus the base and treble on Receiver. No sub-woffer needed. Good luck, have fun. I am |
