10 best phono preamps

A phono preamp, also known as a phono stage or phono amplifier, is an essential component in a home audio system, particularly when playing vinyl records. It serves a crucial role in amplifying the low-level signals produced by a turntable's cartridge, making them suitable for input into a standard line-level audio amplifier or receiver. Here are some key aspects of phono preamps:

  1. Purpose:

    • Phono preamps are designed to compensate for the unique characteristics of vinyl records. When a stylus tracks the grooves on a record, it generates a weak electrical signal, which is typically much smaller than the line-level signals from other audio sources like CD players or digital devices.
  2. RIAA Equalization:

    • Vinyl records are cut with a specific equalization curve known as the RIAA curve. This curve boosts the bass frequencies and attenuates the treble frequencies during recording to overcome the limitations of the medium. A phono preamp includes an RIAA equalization stage to reverse this curve and provide a flat response.
  3. Gain:

    • Phono preamps feature a gain stage to amplify the weak signal from the cartridge to a level that can be further processed by your amplifier or receiver. The amount of gain required depends on the cartridge's output voltage and sensitivity.
  4. Cartridge Compatibility:

    • Phono preamps come in two main types: Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC). MM phono preamps are more common and are suitable for most consumer-grade turntables.MC phono preamps are designed for high-end turntables with low-output MC cartridges.
  5. Connection:

    • Phono preamps typically have RCA input and output connectors. You connect the turntable's output (usually via an RCA cable) to the phono preamp's input, and then connect the preamp's output to an amplifier or receiver.
  6. External vs. Built-In:

    • Some turntables and receivers include a built-in phono preamp, eliminating the need for an external unit. However, dedicated external phono preamps are often preferred for their potential to provide better sound quality and flexibility in upgrading components.
  7. Noise and Distortion:

    • Phono preamps must have low noise and distortion characteristics to faithfully reproduce the delicate details of vinyl records. High-quality phono preamps use quality components to minimize unwanted noise and distortion.
  8. Adjustability:

    • Some phono preamps offer adjustable settings for cartridge loading, gain, and capacitance. These settings can be fine-tuned to match the specific characteristics of your turntable and cartridge.

In summary, a phono preamp is a critical component in a vinyl playback system, ensuring that the unique characteristics of records are faithfully reproduced. It provides the necessary gain and RIAA equalization to make vinyl records sound as intended when played through a modern audio system. When choosing a phono preamp, it's important to consider compatibility with your turntable and cartridge, as well as the unit's build quality and features to match your audio preferences.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this thing have an/off switch or do you need to plug/unplug everytime you use it
Answer: no switch. You can plug/unplug, I leave it plugged in all the time.
Question: Unit works fine for awhile and then starts outputting static, even with no input connected. I've tried it with several amps with the same results
Answer: Most likely people who are having noise problems it is because of ground loop isolation problem. If you have a ground loop isolation problem grounding the preamp box is unlikely to help. Without getting technical, what you want to buy is a ground loop isolator or a humm eliminator; both the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator tackles the cause of the noise at the fundamental source of the problem, depending on your audio setup, one maybe easier to use than the other. To use the ground loop isolator or the humm eliminator they generally come with instructions, or you can google this topic. If the noise in your audio system isn't fixed by using this solution the first time, try putting the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator at various points in your audio system. Also you can talk to audio people and get advice about how to fix ground loop problems from people who setup big audio systems, for concerts and such; if you talk to the average electronic garage shop audio enthusiast you are likely to get bad advice, i.e., meaningless explanations. Also caution must be used when Googling this topic, much of the discussion, advice and explanation on this topic is bogus, you can get a general correct feel of this topic if you read a number of explanations. Also one more thing that can cause a "popping noise" is that you have too much gain, this is a phono amp and the gain is huge, it takes a 3mV and makes it 2Vp-p this is a gain of around 100 to 200, if you gain up the audio signal too much then the signal out of your amplifier runs out of head room and clips, this can cause a popping sound, essentially you have too much gain. If this is occurring you need to either buy a preamp with less gain or attenuate the signal before it gets to the preamp. If this is a problem, too much gain, you can buy preamps with gain control.
Question: My turntable has very quiet output. Will this device help boost the volume
Answer: Yes, indeed. If your need was like mine (no built-in pre-amp on the turntable and no specifically dedicated phono input on your amplifier) you will find this unit to be the perfect solution to needed amplification of the turntable's output. Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio.
Question: My amp DOES have a Phono Input, but my cartridges are low output. Can I use this to boost the signal using the Phono Input to reduce audible hiss
Answer: No, you can't. This is a phono preamp with RIAA playback equalization that amplifies the signal about 100 times, so it essentially does what your built-in phono preamp does. The output signal from the separate preamp is equalized to a nominally "flat" frequency response and the amplified signal level will overload and probably damage your built-in phono preamp. Plug it into any other stereo line input on your system (AUX, CD, DVD, TAPE, VCR, etc.), but NOT the PHONO input! If you need higher signal gain, maybe look at phono preamps from ART or TCC that have output level controls. If you use moving-coil (MC) cartridges, you need a preamp specifically designed for them...they require at least 55 dB (over 500 times) signal gain vs. about 40 dB (100 times) for moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. Noise becomes a critical issue with MC cartridges because of their extremely low signal output, so good-quality cables and good turntable grounding are essential.

    User questions & answers

Question: If I have a record player without a Preamp, will this help me with hooking it up to a Sonos
Answer: You can hook it up to anything with a red and white connection. Or if you get the rca to 3.5mm jack then you can hook it up to anything with an input slot. I used this on my realistic lab 440 which doesn't have a preamp. Once I connected the ground from my turntable into the ground slot on this amp, my music sounded loud and clear.
    Question: mp
Answer: Turntables (with typical magnetic cartridges) have very low signal output (a few thousandths of a volt). Records have the bass reduced to provide enough room on the surface for the recorded grooves, and the treble boosted to reduce the surface noise level when played back. A phono preamplifier performs two jobs: - It boosts the small signal from the turntable by about 50 to 100 times (producing a "line level" signal) so it can be used by typical receivers or amplifiers.- It also boosts the bass and reduces the treble according to an industry standard (the RIAA equalization curve) to restore the signal from the record to its original frequency response. The Pyle PP999 is just an inexpensive phono preamp, nothing special. Phono preamps can range from $20 on up to whatever you're willing to pay for ultra-high quality. Some manufacturers make "USB" phono preamps that have A/D (analog-to-digital) converters built in and connect to a computer's USB port. Most of these provide "CD quality" conversion (16-bits at 44kHz or 48kHz). These may be adequate for digitizing your vinyl, but many computer sound systems can provide up to 24-bit, 192 kHz conversion depending on the software you use (much higher quality), by connecting the preamp output to the computer's line input. Don't just convert directly to MP3 files...you'll lose too much detail compared to the original vinyl sound. It takes almost no time to make an MP3 copy of a high bit-rate WAV or FLAC (lossless) file, but it'll take you an hour to make ANY digital copy of an LP, so do it the best you can the first time!
Question: So this is a stupid question, I plug my RCA wires coming from my turntable into the Amp. But where do I plug the speaker wires into on the Amp
Answer: TurnTable==>PreAmp==>Receiver/Amplifier==>SpeakersThe 'Pyle PP999' is the "Preamp". The Turntable is plugged into the PP999 INPUT and the PP999 OUTPUT plugs directly into any (non Phono) INPUT on the receiver. Your Receiver allows you to switch between different music-sources, contains the primary-amplifier and distributes the final sound out to the speakers(and subwoofer). The Receiver should have multiple inputs for receiving signals from eg. CD, Tape, VCR, etc. In my experience those labels are for convenience and interchangeable with the exception of a "Phono" input. NOTE: If the receiver has a "Phono" input then there's a built-in preamp. If your using an external preamp (Pyle PP999) do NOT plug it into the Receiver's 'Phono' input, it could cause damage. I plug the preamp for the turntable into the Receiver's 'VCR' or 'TV' inputs.
Question: I have the Pyle turntable and Pyle stereo but they don't work together--VERY low sound--so is this the missing piece
Answer: Turntables (with typical magnetic cartridges) have very low signal output (a few thousandths of a volt). Records have the bass reduced to provide enough room on the surface for the recorded grooves, and the treble boosted to reduce the surface noise level when played back. Most modern receivers DO NOT have the right inputs to deal with this signal (no "phono" input). User questions & answers

Question: I have a 1990 sharp stereo cabinet that has a phono input but no preamp installed. so, i could theoretically plug the preamp into that port
Answer: I would think if it is from1990 it would still include a preamp phono stage. In any case though, yes it would work if u don't have one built in. Or if u just don't like the sound that comes from your built in preamp u can run this to any other audio in rca jacks on the receiver.
Question: Would a jensen jta-230 3 speed stereo turntable work with this
Answer: As long as your turntable has RCA inputs, this should work just fine. Hookup is simple and amplifier is easy to use.
Question: does this unit have an on/off stwich
Answer: There is no on-off switch. The unit draws very little power from its wall-wart power supply which would remain powered-up even with the unit switched off. I recommend leaving it on or controlling it along with the other audio equipment. Powering it up while monitoring its output results in a loud "thump."
Question: how do i know which capacitance option to use (100pf or 200pf
Answer: You can't "hurt" anything with any of these settings. Of course, you want to use the 'phono' or direct output of the turntable, not the 'line level' or amplified output. just try the 100pf (I think this is more 'standard') and listen for a while. Then try the 200pf setting and see if it sounds better. I think the effects would be mainly small, possibly none.
Question: Is this what I need to plug an older turntable into a new receiver/amp that does not have a phono jack? When I plug in AUX, there is no sound
Answer: Yes, you need a preamp to drive the aux channel on your amp. This one work great.

    User questions & answers

Question: is the power supply autovolts (110-220V
Answer: The power supply we provided is for the USA market only, you could use the 220V adaptor as long as is DC 9V / 150mA spec.
Question: Can audio from a connected analog turntable be sent directly to my home theater pre-amp via the optical output
Answer: You can connect the analog turntable between UA2D and home theater preamp directly via the RCA connector, not the optical.
Question: What size is the headphone input quarter inch or stereo mini
    Answer: 3.5mm (mini) headphone jack
Question: How many ohms does this preamp power? Also, will connecting this to an amp be better
Answer: This is pre-amp, so it cannot power speakers. Ohms are not relevant in that sense. It probably can power many headphones from the monitor jack on the front, but volume may be limited. Also can drive powered speakers that have their own internal power amplifiers from the RCA outputs on the back. Yes, you definitely need a power amp to drive non-powered speakers. Now, the amp can be a standalone basic or integrated into another device such as a receiver, or as I indicated, powered speakers. But don't let that fool you. You need an amp somewhere in the system, and this is not one since it is a pre-amp.

    User questions & answers

Question: Would adding one of these to a headphone amp + turntable setup reduce popping/crackling when listening with headphones
Answer: No, this does nothing to clean up the sound of the record due to pops and clicks. I would recommend an ultrasonic cleaner for that. You can buy ready made kits, or you can create a DIY kit at home.
Question: Does this get power from a standard home outlet
Answer: Yes. It comes with a 5 volt power supply that plugs directly into a standard wall outlet.

    User questions & answers

Question: Sorry can’t reply, I plan on switching setting from line to phono will that work
Answer: Thanks for your question. The output from the Solo should be connected the a line input (not a phono input) on your receiver or integrated amplifier. World Wide Stereo is 41 years old and a proud authorized Cambridge Audio dealer.
Question: Can I run a cable from this into a Sonos 5 if I get an red white converter cable for the jack
Answer: Hello, Thank you for contacting Cambridge Audio. You should be able to run the Solo preamplifier's output into the 3.5mm jack of the Sonos 5 to playback records through this speaker. The type of cable needed would be a stereo RCA connection that changes to a 3.5mm connection, and this is often described as an RCA to 3.5mm "Y" splitter. Best Regards, Cambridge Audio USA
Question: Which power cord should I be using, the 7a or 10a
    Answer: Both.
Question: Why are there two power cords included
Answer: Good Morning - it is also European rated. DEDICATED AUDIO

    User questions & answers

Question: Been using a simple input/output type, so does this model come w/ detailed instructions
Answer: You really don't need instructions as this unit is clearly marked. Just be sure to connect the ground wire from your turntable to the preamp to stop any hum.
Question: Can this be used to boost signal output from a digital tuner box on the way to amplifier
Answer: No. This pre-amp is strictly for pre-amplifying (hence the name) the very low voltage output signal from a magnetic (MM) cartridge. The output of the pre-amplifier is then connected to an auxiliary input jack of a receiver.
Question: Will this work so i can listen to my vinyls with headphones
Answer: Yes, there is a 1/4" headphone jack on the front panel. If your headphones/earbuds us a 1/8" plug you will need a 1/8" to 1/4" stereo headphone adapter which are readily available. Also, for best results make certain that your turntable is grounded to the unit.
Question: can this be used for ripping vinyl
Answer: This small unit is strictly for providing power from your receiver to your turntable. I had an old receiver that had an outlet for my turntable to plug into, so the power source came from there. I recently had to purchase a new receiver (previous one mentioned was 40 years old and owed me nothing) but it did not have an outlet for my turntable. I needed to purchase this item to connect the two components. Now I am good to go. It has nothing to do with ripping or recording.

Fresh Sound for Vintage Record Players

The GOgroove Phono Preamp Pro boosts your turntable's phono audio level up to a more speaker/stereo receiver-friendly line level , giving you better volume and increased sound quality. If you're planning on hooking up your turntable to a computer , stereo receiver , bookshelf speakers , or any other modern audio equipment , you're going to want thew new pro preamp to get the high sound quality that you expect from vinyl.

    Modernize Your Equipment

You'll want the preamp to connect to the phono output of the turntable and the line input of the receiver/speakers. And even newer turntables that may feature a built-in preamp probably aren't going to give you the highest quality sound that could be achieved from an external preamp. The new pro preamp is equipped with both RCA and DIN outputs that you can connect to amplifiers, mixing units, and recording units. The RCA plugs provide a better balanced sound with less distortion and the DIN outputs give you the ability to stream even the oldest of your vinyl records. The DIN outputs give you the freedom to connect to your old school record player without losing the sound quality.

    Clear Sounding Audio

Complete with RIAA equalization which recognizes that the phono preamp creates smooth equalization for balanced, clear audio. This certification also gives the pro preamp less emphasis on low frequencies and more on high frequencies.

    On-Board Controls

The front of the preamp has a built-in in 1/4 headphone port with a monitor knob that controls the volume of your music so you can listen in peace. A clip indicator blinks letting you know what parts of your music are the loudest and the input gain lets you control the sound so there is no distortion. Included is a filter button that rolls off the low end and eliminates "turntable rumble" that frequently occurs with other low-end preamps. Not sure if it's on or off, no problem! Our new enhanced preamp comes quipped with a power button that lights up when it's on. Now you can shut off the unit without having to unplug it!

    User questions & answers

Question: Does this thing have an/off switch or do you need to plug/unplug everytime you use it
Answer: There's no on/off switch. Doesn't seem to draw much current so I left it plugged in all the time and didn't bother powering it down.
Question: Does it need the AV receiver to work or can you plug it Into a wall and the turntable to work
Answer: i think you need a receiver because it has a in and a out plug and you would need speakers
Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio. see less
