3 best home audio phono preamps

Home audio phono preamps, also known as phono stages or phonograph preamplifiers, are crucial components in a vinyl record playback system. They play a vital role in converting the low-level electrical signal produced by a turntable's cartridge into a line-level signal that can be amplified by a home audio amplifier or receiver. Here's what you need to know about phono preamps:

  1. Function:

    • Phono preamps amplify the weak signal generated by the turntable's cartridge, which is much smaller in magnitude compared to other audio sources like CD players or digital devices.
    • They also apply a specific equalization curve, typically the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) curve, to correct for the frequency response of vinyl records during playback.
  2. Types:

    • There are two main types of phono preamps: built-in (integrated into a turntable or amplifier) and standalone (separate components).
    • Standalone phono preamps are often preferred by audiophiles because they offer more flexibility and can be upgraded independently.
  3. Compatibility:

    • Phono preamps come in different configurations to match the type of cartridge used. The most common types are Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC). Make sure the preamp matches your cartridge type.
  4. Gain Settings:

    • Phono preamps may offer adjustable gain settings to accommodate different cartridge output levels. Proper gain matching is essential for optimal sound quality.
  5. Connectivity:

    • Phono preamps typically have RCA input and output connections. Some may also have grounding posts to reduce hum and interference.
  6. Phono Stage vs. Built-in Preamp:

    • Some turntables come with a built-in phono preamp. If your turntable has a built-in preamp, you can connect it directly to an amplifier or receiver's line-level input. Otherwise, you'll need a standalone phono preamp.
  7. Sound Quality:

    • A high-quality phono preamp can significantly impact the sound quality of your vinyl records. Audiophiles often invest in premium phono preamps to achieve the best audio fidelity.
  8. Budget Considerations:

    • Phono preamps are available at various price points, from budget-friendly options to high-end models. Your choice should align with your budget and audio preferences.
  9. Installation:

    • Connecting a standalone phono preamp typically involves attaching the turntable's output cables to the preamp's input and connecting the preamp's output to an amplifier or receiver's line-level input.
  10. Maintenance:

    • Phono preamps generally require minimal maintenance, but occasional cleaning of the RCA connectors and switches can help maintain signal integrity.
  11. Upgrades:

    • Audiophiles may choose to upgrade their phono preamp over time to improve sound quality or accommodate different cartridges.
  12. Additional Features:

    • Some phono preamps offer features like adjustable loading impedance for MC cartridges, subsonic filters to remove low-frequency rumble, and mono/stereo switching for mono records.

Phono preamps are essential components for vinyl enthusiasts, ensuring that the delicate analog signal from vinyl records is properly amplified and equalized for an enjoyable listening experience. The choice of phono preamp can significantly affect the quality of sound produced from a vinyl playback system.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this thing have an/off switch or do you need to plug/unplug everytime you use it
Answer: no switch. You can plug/unplug, I leave it plugged in all the time.
Question: Unit works fine for awhile and then starts outputting static, even with no input connected. I've tried it with several amps with the same results
Answer: Most likely people who are having noise problems it is because of ground loop isolation problem. If you have a ground loop isolation problem grounding the preamp box is unlikely to help. Without getting technical, what you want to buy is a ground loop isolator or a humm eliminator; both the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator tackles the cause of the noise at the fundamental source of the problem, depending on your audio setup, one maybe easier to use than the other. To use the ground loop isolator or the humm eliminator they generally come with instructions, or you can google this topic. If the noise in your audio system isn't fixed by using this solution the first time, try putting the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator at various points in your audio system. Also you can talk to audio people and get advice about how to fix ground loop problems from people who setup big audio systems, for concerts and such; if you talk to the average electronic garage shop audio enthusiast you are likely to get bad advice, i.e., meaningless explanations. Also caution must be used when Googling this topic, much of the discussion, advice and explanation on this topic is bogus, you can get a general correct feel of this topic if you read a number of explanations. Also one more thing that can cause a "popping noise" is that you have too much gain, this is a phono amp and the gain is huge, it takes a 3mV and makes it 2Vp-p this is a gain of around 100 to 200, if you gain up the audio signal too much then the signal out of your amplifier runs out of head room and clips, this can cause a popping sound, essentially you have too much gain. If this is occurring you need to either buy a preamp with less gain or attenuate the signal before it gets to the preamp. If this is a problem, too much gain, you can buy preamps with gain control.
Question: My turntable has very quiet output. Will this device help boost the volume
Answer: Yes, indeed. If your need was like mine (no built-in pre-amp on the turntable and no specifically dedicated phono input on your amplifier) you will find this unit to be the perfect solution to needed amplification of the turntable's output. Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio.
Question: My amp DOES have a Phono Input, but my cartridges are low output. Can I use this to boost the signal using the Phono Input to reduce audible hiss
Answer: No, you can't. This is a phono preamp with RIAA playback equalization that amplifies the signal about 100 times, so it essentially does what your built-in phono preamp does. The output signal from the separate preamp is equalized to a nominally "flat" frequency response and the amplified signal level will overload and probably damage your built-in phono preamp. Plug it into any other stereo line input on your system (AUX, CD, DVD, TAPE, VCR, etc.), but NOT the PHONO input! If you need higher signal gain, maybe look at phono preamps from ART or TCC that have output level controls. If you use moving-coil (MC) cartridges, you need a preamp specifically designed for them...they require at least 55 dB (over 500 times) signal gain vs. about 40 dB (100 times) for moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. Noise becomes a critical issue with MC cartridges because of their extremely low signal output, so good-quality cables and good turntable grounding are essential.

User questions & answers

Question: How much gain does this preamplifier have? Thanks
Answer: A preamplifier's purpose is to enable a user to play a turntable through an amplifier (or receiver) that either does not have a phono input, meaning a left an right RCA jack (and many newer amplifiers do not have phono input in rear of unit), or if you want to use two turntables with the amplifier and the amplifier only has one phono input. Thus there is no "gain." Only regular amplifiers have a "gain." It is NOT a waste of money if there is no phono input for the turntable. It is actually NECESSARY in such case.
Question: I think i have mc tt. it has line level out but missing riaa eq. is this what i need to get bass back into the music and tone down the harsh treble
Answer: You asked the right question about equalization(and level matching) because m/m requires one circuit ,and m/c requires another. Your existing gear determines what you need .You must verify your cartridge type, picking m/m is a lazy fall back. Yes a m/m circuit will often carry a m/c signal but at a poor sound quality pass through, reduced signal, reduced response. Many dubious preamp sellers use a single fits all cheap m/m circuit claiming it covers both because of that. Then like myself you will find your $450 Audiotechnica MkIII suddenly SOUNDS LIKE CRUD. That said if you have m/m already your set,and thats fine then your matched up. When you get good with test equipment you can seee a difference when a pre amp has both dedicated circuits instead of scamming m/c users.
Question: Will this substitute the main amp device on a Panasonic console if I just want to hear the turn table and nothing else
Answer: No it's a pre amp for stereo that doesn't have a phono input. It's not a stand alone amplifier.
Question: when connecting a turntable to a phono preamp/preamplifier dodoes one connect the rca jacks from the turntable to the output or the input on the pream
Answer: The signal path is 1# energy out of the turntable (record player) 2# into the preamp (preamp's in) 3# out of preamp -preamp's out- into receiver ,amplifier, or etc the device your going into.
