13 best open headphones
Open headphones, also known as open-back headphones, are a type of over-ear headphones that have a specific design to allow air to pass freely between the ear cups and the outside environment. Here are some key points about open headphones:
Design: Open headphones are characterized by the perforated ear cups or grilles on the back of the ear cups. This design allows air and sound waves to flow in and out, creating a more natural, open soundstage.
Sound Quality: Open headphones are known for their superior sound quality, especially in terms of spatial imaging and naturalness. They tend to produce a more accurate and wider soundstage, making them popular among audiophiles and for critical listening.
Sound Leakage: Because of their design, open headphones allow sound to escape both in and out. This means that people nearby can hear what you're listening to, and you can also hear external noises to some extent. As a result, open headphones are not ideal for noisy environments or for situations where privacy is important.
Bass Response: Open headphones typically have a more natural and accurate bass response compared to closed-back headphones. However, they might not produce the same level of deep bass as some closed-back models.
Comfort: They often prioritize comfort, with padded ear cups and headbands designed for long listening sessions. The open design also reduces the heat buildup around the ears.
Usage Scenarios: Open headphones are often favored for home listening, studio monitoring, and critical listening environments where the utmost sound quality and accuracy are desired. They are less suitable for use in noisy public places or on-the-go due to their sound leakage and lack of isolation.
Durability and Portability: Open headphones tend to be less rugged and portable than closed-back headphones. They are typically designed for stationary use and may not fold or collapse for easy transport.
Price Range: Open headphones are available in a wide range of price points, from budget-friendly options to high-end, premium models catering to audiophiles and professional audio engineers.
Brands and Models: Many reputable audio companies manufacture open headphones, including well-known brands like Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, AKG, and Audio-Technica, among others.
Personal Preference: The choice between open and closed headphones is largely a matter of personal preference and intended use. Open headphones are favored for critical listening and situations where natural sound reproduction is paramount.
Remember that while open headphones have distinct advantages, they may not be suitable for every situation, and the choice between open and closed-back headphones ultimately depends on individual preferences and specific use cases.

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the differences between the 500x and the 700x? And how are these with movies |
Answer: | They are the best headphones I've ever owned. The only difference is what drivers are actually used, I've never owned the 700x but I'm sure they would more than likely be sufitient. |
Question: | are they good for gaming |
Answer: | I added an Antlion to mine and it works great for gaming. The positional audio is solid. If you want ground-rumbling bass, well, don't use a headset. My sounds card has a good EQ and the bass and overall sound is excellent. |
Question: | Does the cord have the option of detaching (unplugging) from the headset |
Answer: | Yes, if you want to mod it |
Question: | How does the sound quality on these compare to the ath-m40x? If you had to choose between the two for piano practice/orchestras, which would you pick |
Answer: | As the m40x is closed, I would imagine your question is about recording and monitoring? A closed monitor headphone would suit that objective very well. If you meant you were planning on enjoying music in a quiet and comfort of a room somewhere the ad700x will definitely open your ears and blow your mind a bit if you've never had an experience with open headphones before. Closed for monitoring or noise area, open for quiet and most enjoyable sound. Closed may have better bass. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, how is this in terms of bass |
Answer: | Don’t think so. May well not work if you do. Or result in a flash fire or worse. As in Zippos, the “cotton” serves as a sponge from which the wick draws the fuel to the flame |
Question: | Can anyone compare these to Grado headphones? I have a pair of sr-60's and was wondering if these are any better |
Answer: | It's more of an antique light brass color. And yes it's the same size as a standard zippo for the body, the top is smaller and only goes over the wick. It's a very interesting piece. |
Question: | are these good to block out loud conversation and music say on a school bus |
Answer: | It comes with one installed, but no extras. |
Question: | How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD |
Answer: | It doesn't say but I can tell ya if you intend on using it for Extracting its junk the neon has much better results and that's about as cheap as you can get so it tells ya a lot about the quality of this product!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can any recommend an amp for these? i was thinking of getting the objective 2 but if anyone else has a better one please tell me. p.s. i'm on a budget |
Answer: | I powered the HD599s with my LG-G4 smartphone, an Acer Chromebook R-13 (excellent headphone section for a laptop), a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/ Vali 2 (Genalex Gold Lion 6922 tube) stack that I use at work (I also used a Schiit Magni 2 Uber with the Magni 2 Uber), and a Schiit Bifrost Multibit/Valhalla 2 (Genalex Gold Lion 6922 tubes)stack I have at home (I also used a Schiit Asgard 2 with the Bifrost). I did/do not apply any equalization or effects when I listen. Like all the higher end Sennheiser headphones, the HD599s improved noticeably as the driving components improved. After a lot of listening to the 598s and 599s I concluded that they both sounded best when run through my Bifrost/Asgard 2 stack (The Modi 2U/ Magni 2U pairing was also excellent), so this is how I listened when doing my analysis. Like most lower impedance headphones, they both seem to prefer solid state amps to OTL tube amps, but they did pair well with the Vali 2 (a hybrid tube amp) as well. I know the O2 is a brighter amp (and solid state) and would probably pair quite we with these. |
Question: | How is the bass on these headphones? Does it effect the mids/highs at all |
Answer: | While these aren't "bass head" headphones, they have noticeably more bass than their predecessor the HD 598s. I always found the HD 598s to be a little "bass light", where the HD 599s have a much richer sound. The HD 599's are more musical where the HD 598s are more analytical. Depending on the track and your listening level there may be some noticeable intermodulation distortion where the bass frequencies will distort the mids and highs. On Deadmau5's new track "Let Go" the effect is very noticeable when you turn them up (and not all that loud). Playing the same track on my HD 600s, HD 650s, and HD 700s does NOT result in this distortion. It isn't that the bass is distorting, it just interferes with the mids and highs. These HD 599s are my daily driver (at work) and I REALLY like them. They are a far more versatile than the HD 598s, they sound fantastic, and I don't regret the purchase at all. At work I run them on a Schiit Modi 2 Uber/Magni 2 Uber stack and the pairing with the HD 599s is excellent. The highs are also better on the HD 599s than the HD 598s (which struggled with "Sh" and "F" sounds). |
Question: | Can you use these on a phone |
Answer: | I do So everyday at work. No external DAC or Preamp, and its just an iPhone 6. |
Question: | How do these compare to the 598s |
Answer: | I think the sound is tighter, the base is slightly more pronounced, again, tighter with some snap but not boom box silliness. The sound is more focused as if you were close to the stage and not several rows back. The soundstage or separation is very close to the 98 but not that noticeable unless you're very observant. The build is better, and these phones will not have to be handled like rice paper or egg shells. Overall, just a better headphone, really. It is said, by many, the 599 shares some values present in the Senn 600 with its clinical clarity and separation of instruments present. The highs are well rounded, not sharp or shrill. The midrange presence is very solid, and not released. These are not V sounding phones like your M50 Audio Technica. To me, those phones are offensive. The V sound is pronounced base, kind of extreme, and ditto for the offensive treble while the mids are not really projected. The Senn is the opposite, a very balanced headphone in all respects, with wonderful separation, clarity, and build. It is a great all around jack of all trades headphone. That is, TV movies sound really good with these and music, well, I like them better for the focus and presence compared to the 598. Hope this helps. As far as the 598, those are cheaper if you buy the black model. And the 558 sounds a lot like them, and even cheaper if money is an issue. You may also, for a few dollars more, look into the Shure 1440 headphones. They are within affordable range, just as good as the 599 in every way, but do not have that dark and sometimes veiled sound as the Senn does. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these stay on while working out |
Answer: | 1, but reversible |
Question: | How do these fit while wearing thick prescription glasses |
Answer: | Only one, but two colours because it is reversible. |
Question: | what are the significant differences w/ M3? I'm hearing impaired & looking for a headphone for music I can wear at the beach without my hearing aid |
Answer: | I measured mine, which when flat measures about 7 inches on one side. The circumference when unstretched measured about 17 inches. Given that it stretches what I would say is fairly significantly, it's fair to say that it will stretch well beyond the approximate 17" baseline. I hope that's the width you were referring to. -Autumn survivorathletics.com |
Question: | My daughter only has 1 eardrum. Will she be able to hear music through both ears with these headphones |
Answer: | No - I have a small head and it was so small, that I knew a headache would be forthcoming if I continued to wear it. I returned it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How LONG in feet is the detachable cord |
Answer: | 9-10 Feet. |
Question: | Is this an original brand? or It is made in China |
Answer: | The inside sticker on a pair of these purchased in 2020 shows that it is "Made in China". The production country doesn't always indicate the quality as many name-brands have been outsourced to China. |
Question: | These being 55 ohm models, can you really get by without a headphone amp? I'm coming from Grado SR80s which sound fine without an amp, imho. This is for personal use, no mixing or DJing. Probably using a laptop or my Cowon MP3 player usually |
Answer: | Note : I'm hard of hearing (severe to profound, with more loss in the higher frequency) Comparing these to a Sennheiser HD 280 Pro that I am replacing (the right side died from a bad wire after just a year), using my desktop computer and my Samsung Galaxy J7 Star phone as a reference (using Google Music). On my desktop PC, which is basically your typical RealTek type of integrated sound card, they are a bit on the quiet side, but possibly audible enough for most people with a normal hearing range, but I am able to hear the vocals and bass, just more quietly than I like. The HD280Pro above was a louder by default (but has a higher impedance oddly enough). On my mobile phone, it's louder and while it may not be cranking it out, it's definitely loud enough for me to enjoy without a problem. When paired with my Tascam DR60Mk2 4-channel audio recorder, using the computer output into CH1/CH2 XLR inputs at a 'LOW' gain setting, and headphones plugged into the Phone monitoring 3.5mm jack with an output volume around 6~8 depending, it is much louder and closer to what I prefer. Also with the amplication provided on the tascam (Which is overkill for computer purpose, and meant more as a field recorder) with a Low gain setting is a very clean signal to the headphones and definitely loud enough for someone who is close to deaf as I am. Nutshell : even with me being hard of hearing, using the headphones with a mobile phone or computer directly, it's loud enough for me to hear it, even if it's not like "jamming". Sidenote : Compared to the Sennheiser, these are semi-open backs (versus a closed back), which means not only do the K240 exhibit sounds that other people in the room will be able to hear what you're listening to easily, it also means that as I'm typing on a mechanical keyboard with 'red' switches, I can hear my clacking typing while music is playing on the headphones. |
Question: | What is better for recording and mixing guitar, vocals (for metal). And mixing them. AKG 240 or Audio-Technica ATH-M50? Why |
Answer: | I can't comment on the ATH-M50, as I haven't used one yet. The AKG 240 however is a very good set, but I wouldn't use headphones to mix final masters. Especially not when you have to listen to screaming guitars. For tracking vocals you should be carefull as a sensitive mic would "listen" to the headphones too. Not always welcome when recording soft passages. Hope this helps |

User questions & answers
Question: | Comparing to hifiman he 500,whats better in bass, sound stadge, highs |
Answer: | I'm have no first-hand experience with the Hifiman, but I can tell you that this is what most would consider "flat" response. It does not emphasize bass or treble unless you use your amplifier to do so. Personally I love these because out of the box they produce full range, realistic sound. However, you can use your amp or other equipment to push the bass, the treble, or customize the sound in any way you'd like as the range and response on these are studio quality. I also like that they are very light and the ear cups are actually large enough to go over my "elephant" ears and not just sit on top of them. I hope that helps! If not, I suggest checking the Audio-Technica website as it provides extensive details about their equipment. If you have technical questions, you can also contact their technical support. They were very helpful when I was selecting equipment! I highly recommend any of the AT products! Just a matter of selecting the one that best matches your preferences. |
Question: | Can these work with out an amplifier? are they still enjoyable without one connecting them directly to a smartphone or a computer? Thanks |
Answer: | These headphones do not need an amplifier to work with any source. They are at 470 ohms, studio quality and will need more signal, but still capable of working with any source. |
Question: | I have a large head, 7 3/8th fitted hat. Will these fit me comfortably |
Answer: | I have an even larger head (7 5/8) and these are comfy. The two pads on top move easily enough to not push onto your head too hard. And the spine doesn't push the pads too hard into the side of your head. Though, if you get a bad set of headphones, like I did, the pads can feel stiff and pointy by the stitching (which intensifies the pressure into a single point on the side of your head). It gave me a headache not long after putting them on. I exchanged them with another pair through Amazon, and the new pair of phones are great. They're currently my favorite to wear for long periods of time. |
Question: | Do these fit smaller heads decently |
Answer: | I have a large head, but minimum width is 4 inches from earcup to earcup, and the wings that rest on top of the head have a minimum span of about 8 inches from the top of one ear to the other. If your head is smaller than that you may prefer one of the AT headphones without the wings as those adjust using standard sliders. They are super comfortable, very light, and the open air design keeps them cool (my biggest complaint with most headphones is how hot my ears get). The sound is excellent, though some would describe as flat response, at least from the perspective of what the ear hears. If you like to drive the bass you'd probably want to use some sort of amp with them. Bear in mind ooen air also means you can hear if someone calls your name, the phone rings, etc (which I prefer to isolating, noise-cancelling, but depends on your situation), and depending on volume others near you may hear what your listening to (albeit very faintly). Extra details, but I hope it helps! I have numerous headsets and these are my favorite as they're easy to use for long periods of time (more than 8 hours) with no headache, ear fatigue, etc. More importantly the sound reproduction is very close, if not spot on, to being present in person for the recording. |

Answer: | My head is not very sensitive, so I have no problem wearing these for a couple hours at a time. I've never worn them longer than that. |
Question: | Can everyone in the room hear what you are listening to |
Answer: | Yes, these are totally open-back headphones. Everyone in the room will be able to hear what you are listening to. Do not use these in public as it would be very rude. On the flip side, if you are alone in your room or something they are amazing sounding and benefit from being open-back. |

Open earcups that open minds
The HD 560S features an open-back design that provides natural propagation of sound waves. The E.A.R. (Ergonomic Acoustic Refinement) angled driver alignment recreates the optimal triangular listening position you would find in hi-fi loudspeaker setups and high-end recording studios. This combination creates a wide, articulate soundstage without the need for room treatment, letting you hear the neutral version of your music unaffected by the artifacts of a confined space.
Signature sound
The HD 560S transducers are specifically tuned for accuracy, offering dependable A/B comparisons of components, mixes, and media formats. The entire frequency range is honest, complemented by smooth, deep bass extension that reveals what nearfield loudspeakers often struggle to reproduce. Whether grading a new hi-resolution master or revisiting a vintage audiophile preamp the HD 560S offers a fatigue-free listen that you can depend on.

From the singer’s breath to fingers squeaking on a fretboard, these audiophile-grade open-back headphones match feather-light comfort with pristine tuning. Discover new layers of transparency and detail every time you slip them on.
Engineered for exceptional performance:
The Philips Fidelio X3 headphones boast double-layered ear shells that reduce resonance and vibration. The neodymium drivers are engineered to tilt at 15 degrees, fitting the natural geometry of your ear for optimal accuracy at high frequencies. The result: flawless performance, with exquisite detail.
Feel the passion. Premium design:
These over-ear headphones aren't just built to sound spectacular: they feel incredible too. The light, soft inner headband adjusts to fit perfectly. The outer headband adds a reassuring weight, while the snug fit of the feather-light memory foam ear-cup cushions creates a perfect seal. Ideal for long listening sessions.
Open-back design. Wide, natural soundstage:
The open-back ear-cup design is covered with acoustically transparent Kvadrat speaker fabric. Air is able to flow freely through the fabric-eliminating air pressure build-up behind the diaphragm and creating immersive, spacious sound.
The art of balance. Exquisitely tuned 50 mm drivers:
The 50 mm acoustic drivers boast diaphragms composed of multiple polymer layers, and filled with damping gel. The flexibility and smoothness of each diaphragm delivers perfectly balanced sound. The bass is impactful without being overpowering. Midrange frequencies are full and smooth. High frequencies are exquisitely detailed.
Hi-Res Audio. Hear every detail:
Twinkling pianos. Blistering rock. Whatever you love, these Hi-Res Audio headphones let you feel the full impact of every note. When wired to a high-resolution source, you’ll get the full benefit of lossless audio that’s recorded at a higher sample rate than CDs—for a brilliantly lifelike performance.
Acoustically transparent Kvadrat fabric:
The clean, elegant design of these premium over-ear headphones beautifully updates their predecessor-the legendary Fidelio X2. The dark satin finish of the metal frame seems to float over the durable, black Kvadrat fabric that covers the ear cups.
Sumptuous Muirhead leather. Responsibly sourced:
The black Muirhead Scottish leather that covers the outer and inner headband is sustainably and ethically sourced. Beautifully soft and textured, this high-performance leather lends a sophisticated touch to the headphones.
Authentic sound from any source:
Immerse in your favorite albums—however you like to listen. The included cable boasts a 6.3–3.5 mm jack adapter, so you can listen on your smart device as well as your home setup.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a serial number on the item itself? If so, where |
Answer: | The store "HIFIMAN" is the only HIFIMAN official store on Amazon. All the products bought from our store will come with the manufacture's warranty. If you have any problem regarding the headphone purchased from us, feel free to message us through Amazon or contact our official support team. We will try our best to assist you. |
Question: | Do these comfortably fit a head that wears a hat size of |
Answer: | I have both. They both sound phenomenal, with great separation, wide sound stage, balanced sound, for my hobbyist sound engineer's ears (20+ years). To me both sound better and more detailed then Sennheiser HD600, DT770 or any dynamic phones I tried. I found that Sundara needs a preamp, or a very hot input signal, otherwise the sound is very soft probably due to its high impedance (by design). Love the USB-C/Bluetooth dongle of Deva - very versatile! Sound quality is almost identical using analog, digital or Bluetooth (AptX). Bluetooth introduces about .5 sec delay though, so you cannot track/mix in them on BT, but the freedom to move around while just LISTENING to music is great. So because of this connectivity galore I'd take Deva over Sundara (if I had to have just one - but I kept BOTH!). |
Question: | How much do they weigh? are they lighter than the philips fidelio x2hr |
Answer: | A good one! With LDAC BT, or a USB C cable to the phones, it's phenomenal! I've compared it positively to my Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt, Massdrop CTH & SDAC hybrid and now with my Monolith THX AAA. The DAC in the headset compares very nicely! |
Question: | How do these differ and how similar are they compared to the x2's? and in what ways? my fav are the x2s. thanks for any detailed feedback |
Answer: | Try opening the "drawer" underneath the oven. Mine is located on the frame of the oven, but I had to pull the drawer open to find it |
Question: | Do I need an amplifier for this |
Answer: | Control... 3-turns will give you less heat on a high, medium or low setting. Four turns are the most effective for 6 and 8 inch burners and 6 turns for larger. Chefs will tell you gas but some of us are stuck with electric stove tops and have to make do. Gas provides better control but you need an even heat element under the pot and four turn gives that to you for 6 and 8 inch electric burners..... Good Luck. |
Question: | I didn't find the 599se version on their official website. What is the difference between the standard version? The only difference I see is the color |
Answer: | Just the burner. |
Question: | The HD598's pads were known to flake over time. Has this been fixed in this updated 599 model |
Answer: | Yes OEM Part - Manufacturer #318372211 is the 6" Heating element for the above listed model. Thank you! |
Question: | what is the frequency response |
Answer: | 1 6" |

User questions & answers
Question: | how long is the cable |
Answer: | I've not actually done this as I have a different novation device for this, but as this device's buttons are assignable, the answer is yes. Depending on your DAW's compatibility with this device though, you might find yourself needing to do a good bit of device registration customization. For instance I use Studio One and there was not a direct device match in it's available profile. I can use the keyboard and some of the knobs as a default midi device, but have to customize the device profile to assign all of the functions. Something to be aware of. |
Question: | Would these pair well with the dragonfly red dac/amp |
Answer: | Hi Amin, It has higher quality components, as well as full RGB pads. - Pixel Pro Audio |
Question: | Can the balanced cable be used with an onkyo dp-x |
Answer: | No, it does not have speakers, and does not create sound on its own. It is a MIDI controller, not a synth. It needs to be plugged into a computer, or a tablet, running music software. I use it with Ableton Live on a Mac, and it works with Animoog on the iPad. |
Question: | Would the LG V30 power these well without a amp |
Answer: | Novation doesn't make one directly, but there are after market cases that would work.If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us on Amazon. We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio |

User questions & answers
Question: | hi any recent buys here that can tell if it's still the made in Austria models |
Answer: | Okay, I have actually returned several units for issues like this. I ordered just about every inexpensive body kun on Amazon, and ALL of them had some issue. My son says that you can actually brush a little diluted glue on the ball of the joint and allow it to dry, then try placing it back in. Repeat until you've built up enough to get a firmer joint fit. He learned this from Gundam models and then proved it with one of these, it works, but is time consuming. So is a return though, lol. |
Question: | hi , are they wireless |
Answer: | My daughter bought the set and it was both genders I just recently purchased a set my set has not come in yet takes about six weeks if not up to 10 weeks to come in I’ve been told been waiting a month |
Question: | Do these K702 have substantially more bass than the Q701 (which I found to be very light in the bass |
Answer: | I have listened to the SR60 and SR80 Grados. I have the discontinued SR125 Grados which are much better than either the 60's or 80's And were essentially SR225 drivers sold for less because they were matched to a less stringent tolerance. Cut to the chase. I am a long term audiophile and have listened to many good headphones. These Samson SR850's are giant killers for the price. Comparing to headphones in the 300-500 dollar price range. In fact they are better in my opinion than several in the 600 dollar price range. The Grado SR125's are slightly more detailed but also more edgy. These are in the same sound quality of the SR125's in my opinion and they don't exaggerated digital noise as much. They are much better and either the Grado 60's or the 80's. The 60 s are muddy and closed in by comparison. THe 80's are better but not as good as these from my memory. Perhaps they are now. It's been a long time since I listened to the 80's. These have a relaxed well balanced sound and good bass. You will have to select a pair of headphones in the 300 dollar or higher to get significantly better. The build quality is not first rate but better than represented in the media. Most 300 dollar headphones are still built to low standards. |
Question: | Looking at the 712 and 612. I am a musician who also does production. Why would I want to spend the extra money for the 712s? Thanks |
Answer: | As for the set we have for sale, yes, the velour pads are standard on this set. |

AKG Varimotion Membrane
The heart of any headphone or microphone is the diaphragm. It’s the component that handles the challenging task of turning its mechanical motion into the electrical signal that delivers the sound. Varimotion from AKG is a unique technology that allows the production of a diaphragm whose thickness varies along its diameter. With the help of this innovative diaphragm, AKG is able to precisely tune the capsule for the highest level of performance to provide powerful, accurate, clear and feedback-free sound.
AKG Flat-Wire Voice Coil Technology
AKG’s flat-wire voice coil technology is what gives the K702 reference headphones the transient response that delivers amazingly accurate and spacious sound. Conventional voice coils use round wires, but AKG’s flat-wire technology allows the company to build very rigid yet lightweight voice coils, which improves the pulse response. Furthermore, using flat wires provides higher packing density in the magnetic gap, which increases the efficiency because less power is lost to heat.
Phenomenal Comfort for Complete Immersion
Nobody wants to endure pain or discomfort when working in the studio or listening to music. That's why the K702 Headphones were built to fit you. Unique 3D-Form ear pads and an ergonomic padded genuine-leather headband ensure that you remain pain-free and comfortable, even during the longest of sessions. The ear pads feature an innovative gel construction with a super-soft lining. Plus, with the self-adjusting headband design, you'll never have to worry about fiddling with positions ever again.
The AKG Legacy - Inspiring Greatness for Decades
