If it's not connected, I retrace my steps while attempting to connect. Once I know it's connected, I go to youtube and play a track with a high pitched sound or old school modem sounds. Turn off everything else around me to make my surroundings as quiet as possible, turn the volume on my phone all the way up and listen for the sound while searching for the bud... This usually works.
