13 best pro headphones
Pro headphones are a type of audio equipment designed for professional audio work, such as recording, mixing, and monitoring in music studios, post-production facilities, and live sound applications. They are typically high-quality, closed-back headphones that offer accurate and detailed sound reproduction, making them suitable for critical listening and audio production tasks. Here are some key features and considerations related to pro headphones:
Sound Quality: Pro headphones prioritize accurate sound reproduction, providing a clear and balanced audio representation. This helps professionals make precise decisions when recording, editing, and mixing audio.
Closed-Back Design: Many pro headphones have a closed-back design, which isolates the listener from external noise and prevents sound leakage. This feature is crucial for monitoring in noisy studio environments or on-stage during live performances.
Comfort: Since professionals often wear headphones for extended periods, comfort is essential.Pro headphones usually have padded ear cushions and adjustable headbands for a comfortable fit.
Durability: Pro headphones are built to withstand the rigors of professional use. They often feature robust construction materials, reinforced cables, and replaceable parts to extend their lifespan.
Detachable Cables: Some pro headphones come with detachable cables, allowing users to replace damaged cables or switch between different cable lengths and types to suit various studio setups.
Impedance: Pro headphones may have higher impedance compared to consumer headphones. This can be an advantage when used with dedicated headphone amplifiers, ensuring optimal performance and fidelity.
Sensitivity: Sensitivity refers to how loud the headphones can get with a given amount of input power. Pro headphones often have higher sensitivity, which means they can be driven to higher volumes without distortion.
Sound Isolation: The closed-back design of pro headphones provides a degree of passive sound isolation, but some models may also incorporate active noise-canceling technology for even better isolation in noisy environments.
Reference Monitoring: Pro headphones are often used as reference monitors, allowing audio professionals to assess the accuracy of their work. Many studios have specific models they trust for this purpose.
Compatibility: Pro headphones typically have a standard 3.5mm or 1/4-inch headphone jack, making them compatible with a wide range of audio equipment, including audio interfaces, mixing consoles, and headphone amplifiers.
Price Range: Pro headphones can vary widely in price, from affordable models suitable for home studios to high-end, studio-grade options used by professional audio engineers.
Overall, pro headphones are a crucial tool for audio professionals, enabling them to make critical decisions and achieve high-quality audio results in various production and monitoring scenarios. The choice of pro headphones depends on the specific requirements of the user and the intended use cases.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this airpods pro connect to huawei or samsung |
Answer: | i have found that after the airpod shows as being connected and is active on my Google Pixel, if I close the wireless case, the airpod is disconnected. Why is this happening? I thought this was compatible with Android. |
Question: | Is the noise cancelling feature sufficient enough to drown out the sound of a lawnmower |
Answer: | Drown out 100% no. However they eliminate a lot of the noise, for example I can’t hear the mower running/idling but I can hear it (very muffled) when the blades are engaged. |
Question: | How is call (mic) quality? (i currently use the plantronics 5200 which has amazing (mic) noice reduction |
Answer: | When it comes to others being able to hear you in noisy environments Nothing beats plantronics 5200 headsets. Only others comparable would be the fast food order taker style headset like the parrot ones. As far as sound quality for you as the wearer absolutely amazing. If you want people to hear you noisy environments Plantronics is better if you just want to be heard in quiet environments these will do perfectly fine and you get the greatness of audio also. |
Question: | Why does it look like a hairdryer |
Answer: | The answers here are funny, but the real answer is that the dangling part is the battery. The nice thing about this Pro version is that the battery is much shorter -- the original AirPods looked like snot was hanging out of your ear. These are much more compact and subtle than that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these headphones come with a carrying case |
Answer: | No, they don't come, but I suggest to buy a case just in case. If you don't want to, buy it without a case, those are durable headphones, but you never know if you'll need the case to carry them in a bag, back pack, carry on. |
Question: | How does this compare to the ATH-M30? And how comfortable is it for extended hours of use |
Answer: | I can only respond to the 2nd part of your question as I have not tried the ATH-M30, but the ATH M20X was (for me) extremely uncomfortable even after using for only a short period of time. This was due to the, IMO, excessive heat build-up which literally caused pools of sweat to collect inside the earpieces. I returned the headset after a few days. |
Question: | are these good for big heads? i have trouble finding headphones that fit comfortably over my big head. also i wear glasses if that helps |
Answer: | They are pretty tight on the head, and they go over the ear, so if you're wearing glasses the soft part will push on your frames. I can't wear my glasses with them because I find it too uncomfortable. It might be better to look at on ear, rather than around ear headphones. That said, I've been able to loosen the headphones a lot by bending the the metal headband. If you're not afraid to do that with $50 then you might be able to get them to a comfortable "clamp" amount, haha. |
Question: | Are these noise-canceling enough to wear on a plane and not hear the plane noise |
Answer: | They do NOT have electronic noise canceling. They are over the ear. The cups absorb outside sound but not enough that would be considered "noise cancelling". They're mainly for DJ's, home, and professional studio producers who use them because electronic "Noise Cancelling" tech interferes with recordings. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these suppress engine noise |
Answer: | They suppress all noise by virtue of the seal around the ear, but they won't block it out because they're not technically noise canceling (no active noise suppression). They also do better with high frequency noise and aren't as good in low frequency where much engine noise lies, which is true of all things that only passively block noise eg ear plugs. So the answer is yes to a limited degree, but it won't be a complete suppression by any means and more in the high frequencies. I've found the combo of these with earplugs to be very effective for airplane noise. |
Question: | Is the cord detachable? The description says it is detachable, answers here say otherwise |
Answer: | The cord is not detachable but it is replaceable. If you're handy with a soldering iron you can however easily add a 3.5mm headphone jack to use a removable cable. |
Question: | How is the sound leakage? l need portable headphones to use in the bus, library, and such. I don't want to bother people around me |
Answer: | There is "sound leakage". At the moment, I have them hooked up to my computer. No special amplification, just on-board Realtek. At 75-100% volume, I can slightly hear them over ambient noise (such as my heater, which is kind of loud) while standing about ten feet away. I don't know if everyone else that answered this question listens to their music at low volume, or if their headphones have some insulation that mine doesn't but in my experience, there is plenty of "sound leakage". Also, you could actually use these as speakers while you're not wearing them. They wouldn't be loud enough to entertain anyone, but you could still listen to something while they sit on your desk. |
Question: | How durable are they in cold weather |
Answer: | I’m a professional location sound mixer in Alaska. I’ve had these headphones out in -50 F weather for 12 hour shoots. These headphones can withstand the cold |

User questions & answers
Question: | Anyone know where these are made? Are they made in China like many competitor's models |
Answer: | These are made at Beyerdynamic factory in Germany. All of Beyerdynamics large on-ear headphones are made in Germany. Some of the companies in-ears are made in China but 90% of their products are made in Germany. |
Question: | Given the prices $180 for 32 ohms, $278 for 80 ohms, and $170 for 250 ohms, which one should I buy for 98% amp-less listening |
Answer: | For an amp-less setup the 32 Ohm are the way to go. Yes you can use the 80 Ohms non-amp'd (the 250s are not recommended for this), but your listening levels are going to be limited (how many dB you get out of them). Beyerdynamic created a set of low-impedance for a reason - and if your laptop / phone / or PC with no external amp/dac or amp'd internal card are your primary use...then you have your answer. |
Question: | Does the 30 ohms have the same bass output if it is connected to an amp compare with the 250 ohms |
Answer: | I am looking at this 250 ohm headphone because it has a high impedance. I build a vacuum tube amplifier with a nominal impedance of 600 ohms. Although it seems to drive 32 ohm headphones, it will work better with headphones closer to 600. The high voltage changes needed to drive high impedance headphones do not carry a lot of current, but they do carry much detail. I tend to believe that high impedance headphones will be more responsive and defined than lower impedance headphones, but their hardware requirements are different. Small mobile devices don't have high voltages in them to generate signals for high impedance headphones, which is why low impedance is standardized, and even then, many devices lack the power to drive the bass on them. A dedicated amp is the extra hardware to fill out a quality signal. So even poor quality headphones can sound better when driven by the appropriate source. In the end, your headphones will not improve the sound significantly if you do not have an amplifier to back them up, though I still think higher impedance phones will result in a better sound. |
Question: | How does this compare to the Audio Technica M50x |
Answer: | For me, the 2 sound very different from each other. The soundstage of the M50x is pretty narrow while the soundstage of the DT 770 (I’ve only heard the 250 ohm) is very wide for a closed-back. The sound signature of the DT 770 is actually more neutral than the M50x. The M50x is commonly attributed with a V shaped signature, but it’s a pretty wide/flattened V (more like a smile or reverse check mark). The DT 770 (250 ohm) has one of the more neutral signatures out of headphones in this price range/class (you can look up the sound graphs for it to see it’s pretty neutral). I like the velour pads of the DT 770 way more than the pleather pads of the M50x (I will say it’s a big improvement over the M50 pads). The M50x folds up quite well while the DT 770 doesn’t fold up at all. If you plan on packing it, the M50x will take up less space even if you used a case for it. The detachable cable of the M50x also allows it to be stored without risking damage to the cable. Of course, if you’re getting the 250 ohm DT 770, you’re going to need an amplifier while the M50x can be run without one (though it does sound better with one). I’d honestly recommend that you pick out between 5-10 tracks from your library that you know really well and listen to how both headphones reproduce the audio because 1) your ears are unique to you, 2) your preferences for certain specific details are unique to you, and 3) the more headphones you try the more you’ll be able to pick out the sound that you like the most. I modified my M50x with the hybrid Brainwavs Pads and added 2 small vents in the cups to cut the low and high down and make it more neutral as well as open up the soundstage to have better separation (and velour-leather hybrid provides benefits from both worlds regarding comfort-to-leakage). I power the DT 770 with a Phil Jones Big Head DAC/amp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | since there are the vents on the side, does the sound leak? can others hear it |
Answer: | These headphones are semi open back design. They sound much airier and natural compared to the closed back kind design. However on the downside, they do leak to some extent, specially on higher volumes. Others will be able to hear the higher freq. but will not be able to distinguish what is being played. Hope this helps. |
Question: | How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones |
Answer: | I own both sets. The Sennheiser HD 598 and their predecessors HD 595 (see my review) are extremely SMOOTH, headphones you can fall asleep to. The Beyerdynamic DT 990-Pro 250 ohm are ANALYTICAL headphones. You will not fall asleep with these as they demand your full attention. Different purpose I would say. |
Question: | I see alot of reviews saying these headphones fatigue fairly quickly. I saw simuliar views on the grados and after an hour they began to really hurt |
Answer: | This is a common complaint, but let me clear things up a bit. Treble can sound fatiguing for two reasons: 1. energy storage in the treble, 2. loud treble. Energy storage is very bad, think of when you ring a bell. After the initial strike the bell continues ringing for several seconds. You don't want your headphones to do this, because not only will you get loud fatiguing treble, all the notes will blend together. An eq will not fix this. The second reason is having clean treble that's just louder than the rest of the spectrum. Grados are fatiguing for the first reason, DT990s for the second. The DT990 actually have very fast treble (no ringing), there's just a good 4-6dB bump from roughly 4 or 5khz up to about 8 or 9khz. If you tune that down with an EQ they sound great. Honestly I don't even use an EQ anymore, but if it bothers you and you have an eq, it's easy to fix. |
Question: | Are these better than beats are they more comftorable and do they have better sound quality, also does it have a mic |
Answer: | The point of these is purely sound quality and comfort, not portability. For the 80ohm you might be able to use ur phone, but for the 250s u need a dac/amp. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anyone please recommend a usb adapter for this to plug into a PC? Thanks |
Answer: | A small, cheap usb DAC adapter probably won't work well for these. They need a bit of power to drive them properly. Power supplied solely from a PC USB port probably won't be enough (500mA max for USB 2.0 and 900mA max for USB 3.0). You will get much better results from an external audio interface and/or a headphone amp. |
Question: | comfort |
Answer: | They are very comfortable for the first hour or so. I sometimes wear my glasses rather than my contact lenses while using these headphones, and have found that with glasses the comfortable period is much shorter due to pressure on the wire earpieces. The The coiled cable is fairly long, and if you move around in a chair while using these with a laptop, the cable will eventually snare you. The cable connects to the left earphone, and if your earphone connector is on the right side of your computer, receiver, TV or whatever, that means the cable has to be draped across the front of your body. You could reverse the phones on your head, but that would put the left channel into your right ear and vice versa. There's probably a way to reverse channels to correct this. |
Question: | How is noise leakage out of these headphones? I am interested in using them for vocal recording so mix leaking out is a no-no |
Answer: | Even with loud volumes, the leakage is generally non-existent. The volume needs to be uncomfortably loud for me to start hearing a very slight sound leak. |
Question: | Are these a good choice for listening to music at home? I work from home, and I need music to concentrate |
Answer: | I love these headphones for listening to music as well as TV. I had a pair of MDR-V6 phones I bought from Tower Records in Nashville years and years ago in the early 90s that just died after almost 30 years of service, and these are very very similar. These don't have quite the bass that the V6s did, and the highs are a little brighter, but that will be in my best interest if they last me 20+ years like the V6s did! There's a reason the MDR7506s became an industry standard soon after they were released by Sony in 1991 and it's not because they're bad to listen to. If you want to listen to your music the way the engineers and artists probably heard it in production, grab a pair of these. Hit YouTube and watch the in-studio recordings of Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales songs and look at the headphones everybody is wearing. Everybody. Mix of both MDR-V6 and MDR7506, the MDR-V6s having been released six years earlier in 1986. All the way up to current times like the video for "Times Like These" with Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Ellie Goulding and all those other artists that was released a few weeks ago had a couple of people wearing them. That's longevity. I found that they are more comfortable with the aftermarket lambskin leather earpads that you can find for around $20. They aren't super easy to put on, but are very comfortable. I love the headphones for listening to music as well as television when I don't want to keep people up at night. |

User questions & answers

User questions & answers
Question: | What size are the drivers |
Answer: | I find I like the 'D' handle more than the 2 knobs, it gives me more control. Plus it allows the use of the 'trigger' to turn it off and on. I installed the standard base in my router table and use the 'D' handle and plunge bases for hand-held use. I have no been disappointed with this set. |
Question: | Which jack should i use if i want to use the headphones on my macbook pro |
Answer: | This router system includes both 1/4- and 1/2-inch collets. You can use both 1/4 and 1/2 inch shaft bits. Each collet is connected to a nut. To change sizes unscrew the collet nut assembly from the motor and replace with the desired size. |
Question: | Do you need to purchase the audio amplifier with these for great results? Or are they this good right out of the box |
Answer: | Definitely not this one. Keeps going blank and has to be restarted and we tried setting our own password and keeps forgetting it so it only works with the manufacturer password provided in the back label |
Question: | When will this be available for purchase |
Answer: | Hi, Thanks for contacting D-Link! Yes, this router will work with any internet service, including Optimum Cablevision and Verizon. Thanks again and let us know if you have any other questions. Best regards, D-Link Customer Service |
