11 best pro audio headphones
Pro audio headphones are high-quality headphones designed for professional audio applications. They are commonly used by musicians, sound engineers, recording artists, and audiophiles who demand exceptional sound quality and precision. Here are some key features and characteristics of pro audio headphones:
Sound Quality: Pro audio headphones are engineered to provide accurate and transparent sound reproduction. They aim to reproduce audio as faithfully as possible, allowing users to hear every detail in their music or audio recordings.
Closed-Back vs. Open-Back: Pro audio headphones come in two main designs: closed-back and open-back. Closed-back headphones provide isolation from external noise and are suitable for tracking and recording in noisy environments.Open-back headphones offer a more natural and spacious sound but may not isolate sound as effectively.
Frequency Response: These headphones typically have a wide frequency response, covering the full range of audible frequencies (20 Hz to 20 kHz or more). This ensures that users can hear both deep bass and crisp treble.
Impedance: Pro audio headphones often have higher impedance values, typically ranging from 32 ohms to 600 ohms or more. Higher impedance headphones may require dedicated headphone amplifiers to achieve optimal performance.
Comfort and Durability: Comfort is essential for professionals who wear headphones for extended periods. Pro audio headphones often feature padded ear cushions and an adjustable headband for a comfortable fit. They are also built to withstand heavy use and may have replaceable parts.
Detachable Cables: Many pro audio headphones have detachable cables, which can be convenient for storage and replacement. These cables may come in various lengths and connector types to suit different audio equipment.
Noise Isolation: Closed-back pro audio headphones provide passive noise isolation, which helps block out external sounds. This is crucial for critical listening and recording tasks.
Brand and Model Varieties: Several reputable brands manufacture pro audio headphones, such as Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Beyerdynamic, Sony, and AKG, among others. Each brand and model may have its unique sound signature and features.
Price Range: Pro audio headphones come in a wide price range, from affordable options suitable for home studios to high-end models used by professionals in recording studios and live sound applications.
Reference Monitors: Some pro audio headphones are designed as reference monitors, intended for accurate monitoring during recording, mixing, and mastering tasks. These headphones aim to reproduce audio with minimal coloration.
In summary, pro audio headphones are designed for professionals and enthusiasts who prioritize accurate sound reproduction, durability, and comfort. They are an essential tool for musicians, audio engineers, and anyone who demands high-quality audio playback.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these headphones come with a carrying case |
Answer: | No, they don't come, but I suggest to buy a case just in case. If you don't want to, buy it without a case, those are durable headphones, but you never know if you'll need the case to carry them in a bag, back pack, carry on. |
Question: | How does this compare to the ATH-M30? And how comfortable is it for extended hours of use |
Answer: | I can only respond to the 2nd part of your question as I have not tried the ATH-M30, but the ATH M20X was (for me) extremely uncomfortable even after using for only a short period of time. This was due to the, IMO, excessive heat build-up which literally caused pools of sweat to collect inside the earpieces. I returned the headset after a few days. |
Question: | are these good for big heads? i have trouble finding headphones that fit comfortably over my big head. also i wear glasses if that helps |
Answer: | They are pretty tight on the head, and they go over the ear, so if you're wearing glasses the soft part will push on your frames. I can't wear my glasses with them because I find it too uncomfortable. It might be better to look at on ear, rather than around ear headphones. That said, I've been able to loosen the headphones a lot by bending the the metal headband. If you're not afraid to do that with $50 then you might be able to get them to a comfortable "clamp" amount, haha. |
Question: | Are these noise-canceling enough to wear on a plane and not hear the plane noise |
Answer: | They do NOT have electronic noise canceling. They are over the ear. The cups absorb outside sound but not enough that would be considered "noise cancelling". They're mainly for DJ's, home, and professional studio producers who use them because electronic "Noise Cancelling" tech interferes with recordings. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can anyone please recommend a usb adapter for this to plug into a PC? Thanks |
Answer: | A small, cheap usb DAC adapter probably won't work well for these. They need a bit of power to drive them properly. Power supplied solely from a PC USB port probably won't be enough (500mA max for USB 2.0 and 900mA max for USB 3.0). You will get much better results from an external audio interface and/or a headphone amp. |
Question: | comfort |
Answer: | They are very comfortable for the first hour or so. I sometimes wear my glasses rather than my contact lenses while using these headphones, and have found that with glasses the comfortable period is much shorter due to pressure on the wire earpieces. The The coiled cable is fairly long, and if you move around in a chair while using these with a laptop, the cable will eventually snare you. The cable connects to the left earphone, and if your earphone connector is on the right side of your computer, receiver, TV or whatever, that means the cable has to be draped across the front of your body. You could reverse the phones on your head, but that would put the left channel into your right ear and vice versa. There's probably a way to reverse channels to correct this. |
Question: | How is noise leakage out of these headphones? I am interested in using them for vocal recording so mix leaking out is a no-no |
Answer: | Even with loud volumes, the leakage is generally non-existent. The volume needs to be uncomfortably loud for me to start hearing a very slight sound leak. |
Question: | Are these a good choice for listening to music at home? I work from home, and I need music to concentrate |
Answer: | I love these headphones for listening to music as well as TV. I had a pair of MDR-V6 phones I bought from Tower Records in Nashville years and years ago in the early 90s that just died after almost 30 years of service, and these are very very similar. These don't have quite the bass that the V6s did, and the highs are a little brighter, but that will be in my best interest if they last me 20+ years like the V6s did! There's a reason the MDR7506s became an industry standard soon after they were released by Sony in 1991 and it's not because they're bad to listen to. If you want to listen to your music the way the engineers and artists probably heard it in production, grab a pair of these. Hit YouTube and watch the in-studio recordings of Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales songs and look at the headphones everybody is wearing. Everybody. Mix of both MDR-V6 and MDR7506, the MDR-V6s having been released six years earlier in 1986. All the way up to current times like the video for "Times Like These" with Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Ellie Goulding and all those other artists that was released a few weeks ago had a couple of people wearing them. That's longevity. I found that they are more comfortable with the aftermarket lambskin leather earpads that you can find for around $20. They aren't super easy to put on, but are very comfortable. I love the headphones for listening to music as well as television when I don't want to keep people up at night. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How LONG in feet is the detachable cord |
Answer: | 9-10 Feet. |
Question: | Is this an original brand? or It is made in China |
Answer: | The inside sticker on a pair of these purchased in 2020 shows that it is "Made in China". The production country doesn't always indicate the quality as many name-brands have been outsourced to China. |
Question: | These being 55 ohm models, can you really get by without a headphone amp? I'm coming from Grado SR80s which sound fine without an amp, imho. This is for personal use, no mixing or DJing. Probably using a laptop or my Cowon MP3 player usually |
Answer: | Note : I'm hard of hearing (severe to profound, with more loss in the higher frequency) Comparing these to a Sennheiser HD 280 Pro that I am replacing (the right side died from a bad wire after just a year), using my desktop computer and my Samsung Galaxy J7 Star phone as a reference (using Google Music). On my desktop PC, which is basically your typical RealTek type of integrated sound card, they are a bit on the quiet side, but possibly audible enough for most people with a normal hearing range, but I am able to hear the vocals and bass, just more quietly than I like. The HD280Pro above was a louder by default (but has a higher impedance oddly enough). On my mobile phone, it's louder and while it may not be cranking it out, it's definitely loud enough for me to enjoy without a problem. When paired with my Tascam DR60Mk2 4-channel audio recorder, using the computer output into CH1/CH2 XLR inputs at a 'LOW' gain setting, and headphones plugged into the Phone monitoring 3.5mm jack with an output volume around 6~8 depending, it is much louder and closer to what I prefer. Also with the amplication provided on the tascam (Which is overkill for computer purpose, and meant more as a field recorder) with a Low gain setting is a very clean signal to the headphones and definitely loud enough for someone who is close to deaf as I am. Nutshell : even with me being hard of hearing, using the headphones with a mobile phone or computer directly, it's loud enough for me to hear it, even if it's not like "jamming". Sidenote : Compared to the Sennheiser, these are semi-open backs (versus a closed back), which means not only do the K240 exhibit sounds that other people in the room will be able to hear what you're listening to easily, it also means that as I'm typing on a mechanical keyboard with 'red' switches, I can hear my clacking typing while music is playing on the headphones. |
Question: | What is better for recording and mixing guitar, vocals (for metal). And mixing them. AKG 240 or Audio-Technica ATH-M50? Why |
Answer: | I can't comment on the ATH-M50, as I haven't used one yet. The AKG 240 however is a very good set, but I wouldn't use headphones to mix final masters. Especially not when you have to listen to screaming guitars. For tracking vocals you should be carefull as a sensitive mic would "listen" to the headphones too. Not always welcome when recording soft passages. Hope this helps |

Question: | What's the difference between these and the sennheiser hd 25-1 ii that these replace |
Answer: | Studio quality. Heavy duty. |
Question: | What materials are the ear cushions made of? Are both pairs the same |
Answer: | I could not read the question, but here is my opinion anyway. The headphones work as advertised. The price is reasonable also. However, I think the headphones are way too heavy. I have another set of headphones I got from Sweetwater Music that are half the weight and work just as good. Besides, the Seller promised me either a partial rebate or another set of the phones. I sent the required information but I never got the rebate, or even another set of the pones. |
Question: | This are the same as the sennheiser hd25-1 ii |
Answer: | I use them with my IPHONE SE, this headphones have a screw off adapter, so Yes to your question. . They sound good for $100 I have had better but had to pay a lot more. I use them with heavy bassline music such as House music and they don't distort under high volumes. For the money you can't go wrong and built well. |
Question: | Truly good for monitoring with a flat response? In other words, not ideal for consumer music listening |
Answer: | Yes you can. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will i get a good frequency response from using these on a onkyo a/v receiver without any eq? my use is to route my tv audio via toslink to my onkyo |
Answer: | Microphone is pretty good. Callers on the other end of the line have been able to hear me with out any issues. |
Question: | Do i need a amp for these headphones |
Answer: | It says it is around-ear, however, I had to send these back because they were very obviously On-Ear headphones. I have small ears and these hardly touch my head, 95% of the pads are on my ears just like an on-ear headphone. I have the HD598's and they are very large - they don't touch my ears at all. I've had some around-ear headphones that are on the small size and barely clip the top or the lobes - This is not what's happening with these HD 4.40 BT - They are literally just sitting completely on my ears like an on-ear model would. I even had to check the box to make sure they didn't send me an on-ear model - but nope - the box says 'Around-Ear'. Definitely not. Sent these back and just grabbed a second pair of HD598's, but this time the closed-back version and I'm much happier. You can't go wrong with the HD598's. |
Question: | Can I use these for voice recording |
Answer: | it is a problem with a lot of bluetooth headphones and iphones. Here is an apple discussion about it https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7532276?start=0&tstart=0 |
Question: | How do 300 sound compared to hd |
Answer: | The opening itself is 2.4" going across vertically and 1.47" hoizontally. The cup's thickness is 0.8" |

HD 300 PRO Professional monitoring headset series
Capable of locating everything. Reproducing every detail. Staying precise when it comes to both fine subtleties and maximum sound pressure levels: the newly developed acoustic system in the HD 300 PRO enables neutral, delicate sound reproduction. The high level of wearing comfort and efficient ambient noise attenuation ensure that nothing will disrupt your concentration.
Did you know? The HD 300 PRO headphones are manufactured in Ireland.
Viscoelastic Earpads
The design represents a smart combination of wearing comfort and ambient noise attenuation. To achieve this, we have designed the acoustic unit to be more isolated than a monitoring set has ever been. Even after sessions lasting several hours, you will detect only its sound – not its weight.
Viscoelastic earpads and specially sealed acoustic elements provide efficient shielding against external noise. A high level of wearing comfort is ensured by optimum pressure distribution and a recess for the fontanelle. Structure borne noise is filtered out through a coiled cable directly by the earpiece.
Active Gard: Smart protection
Available on the HD 300 PROtect and HMD 300-XQ-2 models, Active Gard technology does not simply switch off at peak levels above 110 dB but reduces signals that are too loud down to a safe level. Other design elements also protect the user’s concentration. For example, the maximum shielding of ambient noise and a sound pattern that is everything you could want when it comes to intelligibility, differentiation or resolution. The ergonomic design guarantees that, even after hours of work, only one thing ‘carries weight’: the sound.
BMD 404 microphone
The acoustic elements of the HMD 300 PRO-XQ-2 have been systematically adjusted for maximum intelligibility, even in demanding environments. This is ensured by highly sensitive transducers with precision diaphragms, which reproduce the input signals in a crystal clear manner, free from distortion.
For the clear transmission of speech, a supercardioid, dynamic microphone is used. It is guaranteed to generate a detailed sound which can be relied on even in the loudest of environments. Includes wind and pop screen.
Cables Included!
Due to our established modular concept the cables of the cable 26-II series are compatible
- HD 300 PRO // HD 300 PROtect include a 1.5 meter cable with 3.5mm jack and 1/4" adapter jack
- HMD 300-XQ-2 include a straight copper cable with coiled segment to eliminate structure born noise. Reinforced with Aramid for improved durability, and softer shield for greater flexibility. XLR-3 connector and 1/4” jack plug with gold plated contacts
Professionally precise
The acoustics of the HD 300 PRO series are systematically tailored to the requirements of professional use. Its linear frequency response provides a neutral, high-resolution sound. With its highly sensitive transducers and precision diaphragms, the HD 300 PRO series achieves a phenomenal depth of detail which it reproduces – even at maximum volumes – in a crystal clear manner without distortions.
Measuring the truth
Distortion, wobbling motions and partial vibrations of the diaphragm have been reduced to a minimum. Together with highly sensitive transducers, this construction guarantees powerful and distortion-free reproduction even at high sound pressure levels. Not to mention the recalculated air volumes in front of the ear. The HD 300 PRO series gives the sound a remarkably natural, three-dimensional quality.
As meticulous as you
Capable of locating everything. Reproducing every detail. Staying precise when it comes to both fine subtleties and maximum sound pressure levels: the newly developed acoustic system in the HD 300 PRO series enables neutral, delicate sound reproduction. User questions & answers
Question: | How do these compare to Bose noise cancelling headphones in terms of noise cancellation capability |
Answer: | Comparing these headphones directly to the Bose QC15, the Bose do a better job at blocking out noise. This is because the Bose have electronics to "cancel" noise, the K271's only isolate noise by a closed back design and thick ear pads. It's kind of an unfair comparison. Compared to other noise isolating headphones these cans do not stack up as well. Some other options you might consider are the ATH M50, HD280, SRH840 or the DT 770. Below I have linked some measurement graphs, the graph on the top right is for isolation. The bottom line is the K271 do not do the best job at isolating noise from the outside world so if that is your primary reason for purchasing headphones look elsewhere.http://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AKGK271MkII.pdfhttp://www.innerfidelity.com/images/AudioTechnicaATHM50B2012.pdfhttp://www.innerfidelity.com/images/SennheiserHD280Pro.pdfhttp://www.innerfidelity.com/images/BeyerdynamicDT770.pdfhttp://www.innerfidelity.com/images/ShureSRH840.pdf |
Question: | How well does the auto-mute feature work? Does it mute when you don't want it to and not mute when you do want it to? Thanks |
Answer: | It mutes when there is no pressure on the headband. I have had the headphones for a few months and never had a problem with the feature. I find it very useful especially in a live or studio environment. |
Question: | Do I need an adapter to connect to a 3.5 mm jack or does this cable already connect to a 3.5 mm jack |
Answer: | cables are (straight and coiled) 3.5mm with screwing adapter to 6.3mm |
Question: | What does MK ll mean |
Answer: | Actually, MK II denotes that these were designed by Michael Kors when he was 11-years old and working in the basement of his family's Swedish bakery. It's not widely known that the pre-teen Mr. Kors was a brilliant audio design engineer (graduated MIT at 10 years old) before he sold-out to the mass-market/low-end fashion industry. The K271 MKII reflects Mr. Kor's impeccable taste and elegant "evening gown" sensibility. |

User questions & answers
Question: | hi any recent buys here that can tell if it's still the made in Austria models |
Answer: | Okay, I have actually returned several units for issues like this. I ordered just about every inexpensive body kun on Amazon, and ALL of them had some issue. My son says that you can actually brush a little diluted glue on the ball of the joint and allow it to dry, then try placing it back in. Repeat until you've built up enough to get a firmer joint fit. He learned this from Gundam models and then proved it with one of these, it works, but is time consuming. So is a return though, lol. |
Question: | hi , are they wireless |
Answer: | My daughter bought the set and it was both genders I just recently purchased a set my set has not come in yet takes about six weeks if not up to 10 weeks to come in I’ve been told been waiting a month |
Question: | Do these K702 have substantially more bass than the Q701 (which I found to be very light in the bass |
Answer: | I have listened to the SR60 and SR80 Grados. I have the discontinued SR125 Grados which are much better than either the 60's or 80's And were essentially SR225 drivers sold for less because they were matched to a less stringent tolerance. Cut to the chase. I am a long term audiophile and have listened to many good headphones. These Samson SR850's are giant killers for the price. Comparing to headphones in the 300-500 dollar price range. In fact they are better in my opinion than several in the 600 dollar price range. The Grado SR125's are slightly more detailed but also more edgy. These are in the same sound quality of the SR125's in my opinion and they don't exaggerated digital noise as much. They are much better and either the Grado 60's or the 80's. The 60 s are muddy and closed in by comparison. THe 80's are better but not as good as these from my memory. Perhaps they are now. It's been a long time since I listened to the 80's. These have a relaxed well balanced sound and good bass. You will have to select a pair of headphones in the 300 dollar or higher to get significantly better. The build quality is not first rate but better than represented in the media. Most 300 dollar headphones are still built to low standards. |
Question: | Looking at the 712 and 612. I am a musician who also does production. Why would I want to spend the extra money for the 712s? Thanks |
Answer: | As for the set we have for sale, yes, the velour pads are standard on this set. |

AKG Varimotion Membrane
The heart of any headphone or microphone is the diaphragm. It’s the component that handles the challenging task of turning its mechanical motion into the electrical signal that delivers the sound. Varimotion from AKG is a unique technology that allows the production of a diaphragm whose thickness varies along its diameter. With the help of this innovative diaphragm, AKG is able to precisely tune the capsule for the highest level of performance to provide powerful, accurate, clear and feedback-free sound.
AKG Flat-Wire Voice Coil Technology
AKG’s flat-wire voice coil technology is what gives the K702 reference headphones the transient response that delivers amazingly accurate and spacious sound. Conventional voice coils use round wires, but AKG’s flat-wire technology allows the company to build very rigid yet lightweight voice coils, which improves the pulse response. Furthermore, using flat wires provides higher packing density in the magnetic gap, which increases the efficiency because less power is lost to heat.
Phenomenal Comfort for Complete Immersion
Nobody wants to endure pain or discomfort when working in the studio or listening to music. That's why the K702 Headphones were built to fit you. Unique 3D-Form ear pads and an ergonomic padded genuine-leather headband ensure that you remain pain-free and comfortable, even during the longest of sessions. The ear pads feature an innovative gel construction with a super-soft lining. Plus, with the self-adjusting headband design, you'll never have to worry about fiddling with positions ever again.
