Answer:	No not really. When you first put the ear buds in your iOS device runs a calibration routine. It samples the general background noise and reduces it substantially. Other intermittent sounds are rejected by the acoustic seal of the earbuds in your ear. Note that there is also an adjustable setting to 'pass' some of the surrounding sound though to the earbuds mixed in with program content. This allows you hear what is going on around you when its important.
