10 best wi fi access point

A Wi-Fi access point (AP) is a networking device that allows wireless devices such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets to connect to a wired network. It plays a crucial role in extending the reach of a wired network to provide wireless connectivity within a specific area, such as a home, office, or public space. Here are some key points about Wi-Fi access points:

  1. Wireless Connectivity: A Wi-Fi access point enables wireless communication between devices and a wired network. It acts as a bridge, translating wired Ethernet data packets into wireless signals that devices can understand and vice versa.

  2. SSID (Service Set Identifier): Each Wi-Fi access point is associated with a unique SSID, which is the network name that users see when searching for available wireless networks. Users select the SSID of the access point they want to connect to.

  3. Security Features: Wi-Fi access points typically support various security protocols, including WPA2, WPA3, and others, to encrypt data and protect the network from unauthorized access.

  4. Coverage Area: The coverage area of a Wi-Fi access point depends on factors like its transmit power, antenna design, and environmental conditions. Multiple access points can be used to create overlapping coverage areas for larger spaces.

  5. Deployment: Wi-Fi access points can be deployed in various ways, including as standalone devices, integrated into routers, or part of a larger wireless network infrastructure.

  6. Management: Many access points come with web-based interfaces or mobile apps for configuration and management. Network administrators can control settings like SSID, security, and channel selection.

  7. Frequency Bands: Access points can operate on different frequency bands, including 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Dual-band access points support both frequencies, offering greater flexibility and reduced interference.

  8. Roaming Support: Some Wi-Fi access points and networks support seamless roaming, allowing devices to switch between access points without losing their connection. This is essential for maintaining a stable connection in larger spaces.

  9. PoE (Power over Ethernet): Some access points support PoE, allowing them to be powered and connected to the network using a single Ethernet cable. This simplifies installation and reduces cable clutter.

  10. Guest Network: Many access points offer a guest network feature, allowing network administrators to create a separate network for guest users with limited access to the main network.

  11. Mesh Networking: In mesh Wi-Fi systems, access points work together to create a seamless and extended wireless network, improving coverage and performance in larger areas.

Wi-Fi access points are integral components of wireless networks, and their capabilities continue to evolve with advancements in wireless technology. When setting up or configuring a Wi-Fi access point, it's important to refer to the device's documentation and follow best practices for network security to ensure a reliable and secure wireless network.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it possible to replace one of the omni directional antenna with an RP-SMA cable from one of those 24dbi antenna and use this AP as a repeater
Answer: If it's anything like the amped repeater/extenders (old REC10 for example) as long as you plug them within range of your router (REC10 recommends at least 70% router signal strength) you can have each extend your router's signal in the direction they are located. That gives you an access point at each (for example in opposite directions from your router, plus extending the wifi around each. In fact, I have extended my router's range by configuring one REC10 to extend another REC10 which is extending the router's original signal. I would be will to bet you can do all of this with this Netgear unit.
Question: Confused. It says "wireless" but yet asks to be hooked to computer. Can someone explain please
Answer: No. But it can be if your ability to extend diminishes quickly from the router due to walls, floors, tall furniture; etc. That's where wiring to the Extender (set to Access Point mode) helps
Question: Can this access point have the same SSID as my main router in order to be able to access the same network
Answer: It can be used in two different ways. If you just plug it into the wall and connect it to your existing WiFi, it creates a new SSID. Alternatively, you can run an ethernet cable to its location, where it will act as an access point to extend the existing wireless network.
Question: I need to have internet in a device that only takes ethernet. Can this device pick the wireless signal and give internet to my device using ethernet
Answer: I straight out bought mine the old American way with my money, unhindered by any promotional or free offers. Also be wary of very good or very bad reviews wherein you do not see the words "Verified Purchase" by the posters name. I'm seeing a lot more of those these days and by my thinking they must be fake reviews because why would someone even post a review here on Amazon if they didn't buy it here? Makes no sense to me. Enough of that but yes I did buy it myself and had it almost a week now and am very happy and impressed with the NETGEAR N300 WiFi Range Extender (EX2700). Mine is fulfilling my purpose for it by providing a strong and solid WiFi signal to my AmcrestPro HD WiFi camera overlooking the outside of my house. My camera's live video feed is now constant and uninterrupted and my screens on my pc, my Android phone, and my laptop all no longer freeze up while I'm watching the live feed. The NETGEAR N300 WiFi Range Extender (EX2700) is a success for me. As for the bad reviews for it I can only surmise they are from user errors in trying to use this device. It's been solid for me and I'm thrilled with it.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you hook an external antenna to unit
Answer: I do not see any mention of hooking an external antenna to this unit in the owner's manual.
Question: I don't see a wan port on this ac, it doesn't have one
Answer: This product is a wireless access point, often called simply an AP, or Access Point, and as such it doesn't have a WAN (wide area network) uplink port. You would connect this product to a regular LAN (local area network) port on an Ethernet (wired) router which in turn would be connected via its uplink port to a source of Internet access such as a cable modem that has been supplied to you as part of your cable company Internet access plan.
Question: How do I get this to work as an access point with my Xfinity gateway/modem/router? It's connecting but no internet
Answer: 1. You have to program the AC1200 using the admin account to act as an access point. Connect your pc directly to the AC1200. Turn the AC1200 on before you turn on your pc so that your pc gets a tcpip (internet) address that is compatible with the AC1200. 2. Login to the AC1200 with the admin account. Use your web brouser to get to the admin account. The default web address is usually 192.168.0.1 3. You have to disable the dhcp function on the AC1200. The Xfinity router needs to be the only device to assign dhcp addresses. If you don't disable the AC1200 from assigning dhcp addresses it will create a subnetwork that is separate from the Xfinity network using a different address range. (Usually starting with 192.168.000.002 to 192.168.000.255). 4. Setup any security settings and network names before you enable the access point mode. 5. Save your new settings and write down any passwords that you may have changed. 6. I also usually put a static IP address in the access point that is in the range of the Xfinity router. That way you can gain accesss to the AC1200 later because you know its address. 7. Plug in an ethernet cable from the Xfinity router to one of the 4 lan outputs of the AC1200. It might also work if you use the wan port (yellow connector) if Netgear updated their software. If you use one of the 4 outputs it guarantees that the access point will be part of the existing Xfinity network.
Question: Can this set up.as a repeater (wifi extender
Answer: A WAP or Wireless Access Point is different than a "repeater or WiFi extender". The primary function of this device is to plug a Cat 5/5e/6 cable into one of the ports. It connects by "hardwire" to your network first, then broadcast the WiFi signal. A WiFi Extender/repeater on the other hand connects by wireless to another wireless access point. You must determine "where" you want to connect first. The "range" will determine the antenna selection. User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with MS Windows
Answer: Placement of the router is key, the center of the house would be best. That being said, mine is upstairs close to center of 2700 sf home, and get pretty good signal. 5G is a little lacking at the furthest points, but works.
Question: Will this work with TP Link one mesh
Answer: I have had the N900 for almost 2 and a half years and I am finding the limitation is really the number of devices and the amount of data it can handle. I am streaming HD content to 2 Xbox360's and 3 streams from an HD Home Run Prime Cable card tuner. I had to put both Xbox360's on the wired Ethernet because the wireless could not handle it. That is why I am looking at the AC68u.
Question: Will this work with Verizon router + modem combo
Answer: If I go to Asus website, you can pull up the specs for each. See http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC68R/ and http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTAC68U/ respectively. Best to do this in separate windows to do a side-by-side comparison.Though almost everyone will tell you both units are exactly the same, except that one is sold online and the other retail, I would have to ask then, "Why are there differences in the specs?" You might have noticed the first difference is in the classification of each unit when you clicked on "Compare List" at the top of the webpage. The RT-AC68U is identified as a WiFi "Router", whereas the RT-AC68R is identified as a WiFi "Client". I'm no networking guru but the specific name classifications would suggest that they are different. The argument or statement that one is retail and the other online could simply be an easy way out for Asus techs to explain the difference. As one person noted in the Q&A section, they purchased a "U" version from Best buy - the vary store that everyone is saying is the exclusive seller of the "R" version. LoL.As you scroll down the comparison lists of each, it would appear that both units are up and up, the same. But, compare and scrutinize the specs carefully.1) Under "Data Rate" the AC68R says "802.11n: up to 600Mbps", whereas the AC68U indicates "802.11n: up to 450Mbps" as well as "802.11n TurboQAM: up to 600Mbps". The AC68R does not mention TurboQAM in the specs.2) Under "VPN Support" the AC68U lists Open VPN Server, PPTP Client, L2TP Client, and Open VPN Client, whereas the AC-68R does not list any of these. 3) A couple of days ago, as I compare the lists, the AC68U showed "86x64" after each of the Windows OS systems under the "OS Support" section but the AC68R did not. That seems to have been updated and removed from the AC68U spec list.4) Also, as mentioned by others elsewhere on amazon and other websites, the AC68U lists DLNA under Management Support. Or it did until a couple of days ago. That seems to have also been removed. So, if both units are reported to be the same, then why are there noted differences in specs as noted in Asus own website? Would like to have an Asus engineer chime in on this. I would suspect that the "U" and "R" actually denotes a different version of the same model, where in the "U" is a more updated version.Update:I posted the same write up above to the Asus Tech Support. This is the answer I received from a tech, via email:"Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service. My name is Joe and it is my pleasure to help you with your problem.Thank you for your question. They are same. But the firmware of them are different and could not be installed by each other. And any other things like hardware are all same. Welcome to refer Troubleshooting & FAQ for ASUS products in ASUS website: http://support.asus.com/servicehome.aspx?SLanguage=en"If anyone can derive justification to say one is an "online" version and the other is "retail (exclusive to Best Buy) based on the answer provided by Joe, I applaud you. I still think the "U" and the "R" denotes different release dates (hence different firmware as claimed by Joe) of the same or similar models, which would also explain differences in published specs. So which unit is the more recent release with the most recent firmware?
Question: Can you bridge wifi and lan to use as a wifi card for lan only computers? router to router over wifi
Answer: Bottom line: 2300 sq. ft. two story house. In downstairs kitchen prior Linksys model, best you could buy a little over a year ago, signal went in and out with the router upstairs on the other side of the house. This gives me 28.7 Mbps on wireless in the kitchen, same as a direct ethernet connection in the computer room. I am amazed!

Question: I have a relatively new hp printer that i cannot connect as it uses wps. is there a way around this? if not, i will have to return. unhappy with this
Answer: Hi Jason,Thanks for reaching out and for your question! If you'd like to use an Airport device on an eero network, you will need to bridge the Airports. eero's cannot mesh with other routing devices. For more information, we recommend viewing this help center article: https://support.eero.com/hc/en-us/articles/208315013-Connecting-AirPort-Extreme-Time-Capsule-or-Airport-Express-to-your-eero-networkI hope this helps! Question: Hi, i have an integrated modem and router from comcast xfinity. how would eero replace the router
Answer: Hi Jeff! Thanks for your question. With eero, you can definitely use Ethernet to connect each eero. This will eliminate any potential interference, and let you get the most of your speeds from each eero throughout your home. eeros also work in a mixed wired/wireless network, so you can even mix-and-match your eero connection types. It should be noted that eero Beacons do not have Ethernet ports, so for a completely wired set up, you will only be able to use eeros.I hope this helps! Question: Is this the same as a netgear wifi extender
Answer: Hi Macjune,Thanks for reaching out and for your question about eero.If I understand your question correctly, you are wondering if you can use eero with another router? The answer is yes and also no.If you'd like to use another router in front of your eero, you can do so. You would have two options here—running two networks or running your eero in bridge mode. With the latter, you would lose many of eeros advanced features, and all the networking settings will be handled by the upstream router. You would still get the benefits of eeros mesh.If you are asking if you can start with an eero and then add another router to expand the mesh, this isn't possible. eero's can only work with other eero and eero Beacons.I hope this helps! Question: Do the bacons plug into an electric outlet
Answer: Hi Dan!Thanks for reaching out and for your interest in eero. In a 2700 square foot home, you would likely be just fine with an eero and eero Beacon. With that said, it really depends on your home, the materials used, and the overall layout.Getting started with an eero and eero Beacon is a good start, and you can of course always add additional eeros where needed.I hope this helps!
