Answer: | This access point requires a POE injector or POE switch. POE stands for Power Over Ethernet, meaning that it gets it's power over the network cable that it also gets it data from. Check the specs on your switch/router/gateway and see if it has 24v POE. If not you can pickup a Ubiquiti POE injector on Amazon for less than $10 (just search for POE and look for 24v or more). A POE injector plugs into a standard outlet, then you plug your cable from your switch into the "in" port and connect your Ubiquiti access point into the "out" port. On a side note I have a couple of these units at work (I'm an IT professional) and they work REALLY well! |

Answer: | Yes, this is sort of unclear labeling. The device will work fine as an AP and with non-POE connected devices powered by 802.11af POE, it doesn't actually require POE+ (at) like it seems to suggest in the marketing and specifications. The reason it says it requires the higher power is because the device has a POE port itself on one of the two available LAN ports, and with that additional power draw it would require a POE+ supply. I have 3 AP's powered by the US-8-60W and they each draw 3-4W with both 2.4ghz and 5ghz active. |

Answer: | You have to understand that this is above consumer grade equipment. This utilized the UniFi controller, and works under the WiFi roaming concept. Think of it like your cellular phone, when you travel from point A to point B over any long distance, you clearly move from one Cell tower to another, seamlessly. This is the same concept, and is part of the WiFi standards. UniFi devices are managed by a single controller, therefore you only create 1 set of settings, not one for each access point. The controller then passes those settings down to each access point that has been adopted in to the network, so they have the same SSIDs. The 802.11 accounts for moving from one access point to another using the roaming standards. |

Answer: | First of all you need a power outlet (120 VAC) in the barn. The POE adapter that comes with the unit will plug in to the power outlet and supply power to the antenna through the Ethernet. The adapter also has 2 Ethernet connections. (Shielded Cat 5 or 6 is recommended.) One connection goes to the antenna. The other you could connect to a computer or to a wireless access point (or router - An ap should be easier to configure if you are new to networking.) That will create a wifi access field in the barn that will be sent to this antenna that will link to the house antenna and to the Internet router/modem. Instructions are straight forward. Basic networking knowledge will be helpful (see youtube). I recommend not standing close to the unit while powered up on the bench. They are powerful enough that you may start feeling the effect of the signal. |

There are dedicated repeaters on the market; and dd-wrt flashing can convert some old routers into a working repeater. |

Answer: | YES, As long as the connection in the basement is routed properly and the WIRELESS SECURITY SETTINGS EXACTLY MATCHES the primary wireless signal EXCEPT FOR THE WIRELESS CHANNEL which must be DIFFERENT on this device than your primary wireless signal's CHANNEL. Regarding the wireless channel, you'll want to make sure that your primary router's wireless channel is FIXED (SET) to a channel (usually you'll want Channel 1, then 6, or 11 for your UBNT device so that both devices are on "non-overlapping" channels). You'll want to set this device's channel to a different channel (1, 6, or 11; whichever, channel of these you didn't set for the primary router). Step-by-Step:First, connect this device to a computer directly via ethernet cable and assign a static IP address to your computer's Ethernet card in the 192.168.1.X range such as 192.168.1.10 (but not 192.168.1.1 which will be your default gateway nor 192.168.1.20 which is the default IP address for the UBNT device); also set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and your default gateway to 192.168.1.1 on your computer's network card (you'll want to reset these settings back to your previous settings after you're done configuring the UBNT device). A lot easier to just have a 2nd router at the other side of the wireless ethernet-bridge, IMHO. Lot less settings to get a remote camera up and running securely. If you do the WDS-repeater mode, turn off Airmax, you lose WPA2 security... all the way back to WEP. Stay in secure ether-bridge mode, IMHO. |

Answer: | If your modem from ISP does not include some sort of router function I would recommend a router of some sort. Does not have to be same brand. This only provides wireless access to network. Will not handle dhcp. Nor will it act as a firewall. |

Answer: | The unscientific answer is not as good. I use it to cover a 20x30 room and some adjacent rooms and it does the job well. However my ceiling AC-PRO easily penetrates 2 floors vertically in my town house and still performs well. I’m sure if you had a wide open room, it’d be fine. Because this is mounted low on my wall it seems to lack penetrating distance. Given similar price and no mounting difficulty, I’d probably choose the ceiling Pro first; however, I wouldnt dissuade anyone from purchasing the IW pro if that’s the form factor you need. |
