14 best ceiling mounted wireless access point
Ceiling-mounted wireless access points (APs) are crucial networking devices used to extend and improve wireless network coverage in homes, offices, and other environments. Here's what you need to know about them:
Purpose: Ceiling-mounted wireless access points are strategically placed on ceilings to provide wireless connectivity in specific areas. They are commonly used in larger spaces or where wall-mounted APs may not be practical.
Wireless Network Extension: These devices are used to expand the coverage of a wireless network. By placing them strategically, you can eliminate dead spots and ensure that Wi-Fi signals are strong and reliable throughout a building.
Enterprise and Commercial Use: Ceiling-mounted APs are often used in enterprise and commercial settings, such as offices, schools, hotels, and shopping malls, where maintaining a robust and high-capacity wireless network is essential.
Installation: Installing a ceiling-mounted AP typically involves mounting it on a ceiling tile or directly onto a ceiling surface. Proper positioning and cabling are crucial for optimal performance. In many cases, professional installation may be required.
Power Over Ethernet (PoE): Many ceiling-mounted APs support Power over Ethernet (PoE), which means they can receive both data and power through a single Ethernet cable. This simplifies installation and reduces the need for additional electrical outlets.
Multiple Antennas: Ceiling-mounted APs often feature multiple antennas, which allow them to provide Wi-Fi signals with various frequencies (2.4GHz and 5GHz) and multiple spatial streams. This results in improved data throughput and reduced interference.
Security: Security features, such as WPA3 encryption and guest network options, can be configured on ceiling-mounted APs to ensure that your wireless network remains secure and protected from unauthorized access.
Centralized Management: In larger deployments, multiple ceiling-mounted APs may be used. Centralized management software or hardware controllers can be employed to monitor and configure these APs from a single interface, making it easier to manage the entire wireless network.
Scalability: Ceiling-mounted APs are scalable, meaning you can add more APs as needed to accommodate a growing number of devices and users. This scalability is particularly important in busy commercial environments.
Mesh Networking: In some cases, ceiling-mounted APs can be part of a mesh network, where they communicate with each other to extend coverage without the need for wired connections between APs.
Cloud-Based Management: Some modern ceiling-mounted APs offer cloud-based management options, allowing network administrators to monitor and manage the network remotely, even across multiple locations.
Ceiling-mounted wireless access points are a fundamental component of modern wireless networking, offering reliable and seamless connectivity for both businesses and homes. When planning the deployment of these devices, it's important to consider factors such as coverage area, capacity requirements, and the specific needs of your network to ensure optimal performance.

User questions & answers
Question: | I would like to run a wired connection from my existing router to another end of my home in order to extend the wireless signal. Is this appropriate |
Answer: | I purchased this 5 pack and it DID NOT come with POE injectors. It was easy enough to order 5 of the 48V 0.5A (POE-48-24W-G) injectors for about $20 each. I have also purchased a couple of the single units, and as others have said, they DO come with a POE injector. |
Question: | What is the range on this before there is any drop off |
Answer: | Ubiquity Edgerouter Lite or X are both good but are slower performance. At this moment Mikrotik hEX RB750Gr3 appears to offer much better performance. I have this unit and it actually was VERY easy to setup. Took me only about 30 minutes since they now load a standard configuration that is ready to go much like a Netgear, Asus, or Linksys consumer router. Sure, it can be complex if you want all kinds of special rules and such but certainly no more than the Edgerouter but of course you can ignore all that stuff if you don't need it. The web interface is quite easy to use and they actually have a very complete and easy to use detailed manual both online and for download that you can't even get with the consumer level products. I found performance to be amazing right out of the box and was about to get over 898 mbs using Speedtst.com on my 1gig service up from 350 with my old Netgear 7000. And, of course you get "all the firewall stuff" and no licensing fees. I've since upgraded to the RB3011 which is about double the price but allows me to get rid of my Netgear switch and has more headroom for future DOCSYS 3.1 services |
Question: | How can i configure this for seamless transition from one wap to another? can i use the same ssid for router and more than one wap |
Answer: | It does come with power adapter, however, it can be power up by standard 802.3af PoE Switch |
Question: | Does this Product come with the power adapter or do you have to use POE device? Thank you |
Answer: | This is a newer and More powerful Model with Wireless A/C |

User questions & answers
Question: | what kind of square footage / range does this cover |
Answer: | yes you can install the same ssid and password, and it works. there is a feature that allow them to work together - I did not try that. |
Question: | Is the power injector included |
Answer: | Yes it does ship with a power adapter but also works well with a poe power source |
Question: | Can you do mac address filtering directly in the ap or is that something that can only be managed externally |
Answer: | Like other 801.11ac access point, 1300mb/s is a marketing statement that is true if you take the combination of the max 2.4GHz radio bandwidth with a 3x3 MIMO client and the max bandwidth of a 3x3 5GHz MIMO client. Essentially 433Mb/s + 866Mb/s = 1300Mb/s. |
Question: | Can you use this wap with any router or must you use a cisco router for it to work |
Answer: | There is no way to give a useful estimate of range. It depends on many factors such as building contruction/layout, your tolerance for speed loss at the edge of coverage, how many devices on the network, and how many other networks are around. I've seen a quarter mile in open space with zero interference. Most recently I did a 3500 square foot space with three of these, to get total, excellent high-speed coverage. Deploying access points is more than just a plug-and-go affair. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this access point able to utilize 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands at the same time |
Answer: | Yes. You can restrict or permit a particular client joining your network by enabling the MAC Filtering on the AP. For more information you can refer to the product administration guide (Configuring WLAN Security section): https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/csbap/CBW_Admin/Admin/en_US/b_Cisco_AP_Admin_Guide.pdf |
Question: | Can i connect this ap to a netgear ad7200 model r9000 router |
Answer: | Yes, the Cisco Business 140AC access point can work with any router and using Cisco router is not a "must". Be aware that the access point is powered via PoE (802.3af/at capable device) or power injector. Management is done through Cisco Business Mobile App (Android or iOS) or Cisco Business Dashboard. More information about the product you can find in the following link: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/business-100-series-access-points/smb-01-bus-140ac-ap-ds-cte-en.html |
Question: | Support Mu-Mimo? wave |
Answer: | Yes, the wired connection will carry the power over Ethernet (POE) required to power this device. The router must first connect to.the supplied POE adapter which will provide the power with the signal from the router. This Acess point will then extend your signal to the area you wish to use in your home. |
Question: | What is the power consumption? I have a POE switch with 30W max at each port. Thanks |
Answer: | Without obstruction the effective range (before drop off) is ~60 ft, line-of-sight, and if the AP is either mounted on the ceiling or high on a wall. EMI radiated from commercial-grade laser printers will significantly degrade the signal as will wireless landline phones that transmit at 2.4 GHz. Transmission at 5 GHz is effective at a shorted range; in my experience, it's around 40 ft line-of-sight. Be aware that many WIFI device have a max transmission speed of 150 Mbps for a N-type WIFI network. To get higher speeds (up to 300 Mbps) a USB N-type adapter is required. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi. i need two pack. but i am returning to argentina on monday. i'm in miami beach. what is the possibility that they will arrive on sunday here |
Answer: | This access point does not support MU-MIMO wave 2. |
Question: | Do these access points hand off clients gracefully when configured with the same ssid or will they each need their own ssid |
Answer: | To follow up on this question, the published specs, depending upon specific revision, list an absolute maximum power consumption of either 17 or 18 watts, though I have never witnessed mine drawing anywhere near that much power, so that is probably only at an absolute extreme that is not remotely typical of normal operation. So far I have not witnessed greater than 10W of power consumption and I have tested them with both a 15W/port 802.11af Fast Ethernet switch and 30W/port 802.11at Gigabit switches and neither has had any issues powering them. However, I only use them with a 30W/port 802.11at standard Gigabit switch configured for a maximum draw of 20W on each port connected to these APs just to play it safe and because I wanted the gigabit speed for these APs anyhow. |
Question: | how's the shipping time |
Answer: | The AP would cover 2500 square feet. You should place each AP every 50 feet each other and consider 10-20% cell overlap to optimize roaming. |
Question: | What are the specs for Outdoor use as far as temperature and any other pertinent information |
Answer: | No, the power injector is not included in the package. It is sold separately and part number is CB-PWRINJ-NA. Powering options are 802.3af/at ethernet switch and the aforementioned power injector. User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to use the switch to make this work |
Answer: | It can configure via web browser without ezmaster. |
Question: | Not tech savvy here, if I run my CAT6’s to a POE switch will it power these devices and any other software needed to run? Thanks |
Answer: | It come with Power Adapter and compliant with standard PoE IEEE 802.3af. |
Question: | Can this access point sit on a desktop |
Answer: | The hardware specs are the same. The most significant difference (other than the physical dimensions) is the location of the RJ45 jack. On the 1250, the RJ45 jack is oriented facing the side of the AP. If mounted on a ceiling, the cat6 cable will be visible. On the 1300, the RJ45 jack faces the rear of the AP and the cat6 cable can be connected to the LAN port and isn't visible if the AP is mounted directly under the hole for the cable penetration. However, if your setting up the 1250 in a mesh or WDS configuration and not planning to have a hardwired connection to the LAN, then cable visibility won't be an issue. In addition to the different RJ45 jack orientation, I also prefer the low profile of the 1300. The cylinder-like design of the 1250 makes it more noticeable while the tapered face of the 1300 is more discrete from a visual perspective. |
Question: | Does the 2-pack come with poe injectors |
Answer: | Sorry for misunderstanding. You can either use included Power Adapter(Supply) or connect to PoE Switch |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does eap1250 have a config page like the eap1300, or is it necessary to use the ezmaster software to configure |
Answer: | the lite is fine. works great! |
Question: | Does it come with poe adapter |
Answer: | It supports B/G/N at 2.4GHz, and A/AC/N at 5GHz |
Question: | How is this different to eap1300 besides dimensions and led indicators |
Answer: | The unifi manager is required if you have any meshed AP's. If you shut it down, they will lose connectivity, but the wired AP's will remain working. |
Question: | This is dumb! why doesn't it say if it comes with a poe injector or just a ac power supply? some here say it comes with poe and others say no |
Answer: | It comes with a 24v injector brick. The lite came in both a 24v only version and a 802.3af/24v version that was released in 2017 or 2018. The latter is what is currently manufactured so unless someone pawns new-old-stock off on you as new you should get an 802.3af compatible WAP (the box will have a "PoE+ compatible!" sticker on it). I have one of the old style 24v and one of the newer PoE ones. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this extend my signal if connected via cat6 to my asus ac3200? will i be able to keep network name and password same for seamless transition |
Answer: | I can not say with a specific model. As long as it is true POE with sufficient output per port then it should. I use mine with a BV Tech 8 port POE switch that has 130W Max Power (up to 30W per port) and this works perfectly with the POE line extended 100 ft per line. |
Question: | will this unit work seamlessly with the fios home router model: g3100 wi-fi 6 (802.11 ax) or are additional accessories required |
Answer: | I don't know the precise definition of "extender", but I know that you can set up two WAC5xx units in bridge mode, with one connected to the wired network and one freestanding, to "extend" your network. If there is a bridge mode option on the wnd930 ap, it may be compatible. |
Question: | Does the AC1200 access point have to be powered by poe or is it a led to be plugged in to an outlet |
Answer: | Yes, the second port can be used to connect to another device. I have a cat8 Ethernet cable coming from the second port to a 1 gb switch and have three other computers connected to that switch and the throughput is 1000mbs just as it is from the switch that this access point is connected to. No speed loss. My cable from switch that has xfinity internet up to the Netgear access point is cat7 heavy duty outdoor. I have had no issues or drops in speed. |
Question: | How many devices can this support, I saw a stat that said only 32 this seems low |
Answer: | WAC510 has better rateVsrange than uap-ac-lite and uap-ac-lr. WAC540 is a 4x4 and is better than uap-ac-pro. |
