13 best 8 port routers

An 8-port router is a networking device that provides multiple Ethernet ports to connect various devices to a local area network (LAN) or the internet. Here are some key points about 8-port routers:

  1. Port Count: As the name suggests, an 8-port router has eight Ethernet ports. These ports can be used to connect wired devices like computers, gaming consoles, printers, and more to your network.

  2. Routing Function: The primary function of a router is to route data between your local network and the wider internet. It does this by forwarding data packets between devices on your LAN and external networks, like the internet.

  3. Network Address Translation (NAT): Routers typically use NAT to allow multiple devices on your local network to share a single public IP address. This provides a layer of security by hiding the internal IP addresses of your devices from the internet.

  4. Firewall: Many routers have built-in firewall features to protect your network from unauthorized access and threats from the internet. You can often configure firewall rules to control incoming and outgoing traffic.

  5. Wireless Capabilities: Some routers with 8 Ethernet ports also have built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, allowing wireless devices to connect to the network in addition to wired ones.

  6. Quality of Service (QoS): QoS features in routers allow you to prioritize certain types of traffic over others. For example, you can give priority to video streaming or gaming traffic to ensure a smooth experience.

  7. Management Interface: Routers typically come with a web-based management interface where you can configure settings, update firmware, and monitor network activity.

  8. Security Features: In addition to firewalls, routers often include security features like WPA3 encryption for Wi-Fi, VPN support, and guest network options.

  9. Port Forwarding: This feature allows you to open specific ports on your router to direct incoming traffic to a particular device on your network. It's useful for hosting services like web servers or online gaming.

  10. Parental Controls: Some routers offer parental control features, allowing you to restrict access to certain websites or set time limits for internet usage for specific devices.

  11. Gigabit Ethernet: Many modern 8-port routers come equipped with Gigabit Ethernet ports, which offer faster data transfer speeds compared to traditional 100Mbps Ethernet.

  12. Wired vs. Wireless: While 8-port routers provide ample wired connectivity, if you need more, you can also expand your network by adding network switches to these routers. Network switches allow you to connect more wired devices.

8-port routers are suitable for small to medium-sized networks where you need to connect multiple wired devices. When selecting a router, consider factors like your internet speed, the number of devices you need to connect, security requirements, and any specific features you may need for your network setup.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this hardware revision A1 or A
Answer: great question and only luck , wins here, no matter what store you buy from, box is sealed and only the bottom sticker of said router (any) shows HW versions, a2 is newest HW version.( or higher, some have 5 or more versions) might be only ESD upgrades , ask maker that. the more important fact in this topic is firmware upgrades we do day 1, new, out of box. do not use wrong upgrades A1 or A2 or what you have, or you will brick the thing. read the sticker and match the rom.bin file to correct version. just like on PCs or well , gee anything on earth with firmware inside..
Question: Is this wired or wireless
Answer: It's just a wired router.
Question: The picture of this router shows antennas, however the description doesn;t mention wireless. Is it? Speed
Answer: warning amazon likes to mix up reviews and questions, now no regard to the actual model sold. yup that is what they do, like leak of data from one to the other. there is no wifi in wired only router. sorry. but both are sold, for those that love slow wifi.
Question: Is it possible to deactivate the VPN feature and to simply use it as a traditional wired router
Answer: you'd do that for a faster router. very few good fast wired routers are sold now for sure modern new faster chips inside (dig?). less than 16 ports, or 8. so we pay more for newer faster router and VPN. (vast performance new? LoL)

Efficient Green Technology

D-Link Green Ethernet features save power and help cut energy costs. The D-Link Green WLAN Scheduler shuts down your wireless network automatically according to a schedule you define, allowing you to turn off your wireless network during off-peak hours, saving energy and keeping your network secure. User questions & answers

Question: can i use proxy server on this
Answer: Yes without problem
Question: Why do we want a network router that works with Alexa
Answer: My TP-Link products, including my Wi-Fi router, operate 'solidly'. I don't use 'Smart Connect', because my devices did not ask for, nor do they deserve, a buffet of choices. I do not use automatic channel, because I am waiting for automatic empty channel. As to Alexa, I bought a new Amazon fire tablet for My Lady, a 70 year old retired school teacher. The included Silk Internet browser is perfectly adequate for installing Chrome. I downloaded about 25 APKs and finally got the correct ones, in the correct order, which lead to upgrades and yada, yada. THAT gave her, her bookmarks and passwords!!! in Chrome. WELL, I cleaned up her Home page by putting just about everything into a folder1. And I left Alexa out there! She has Amazon Music on an Amazon tablet, and the Alexa is sitting on her home page. I am a Kindle and actual books reader and I left that on her home page, although she probably hasn't read a book in half a century. I can put her on Amazon Music on her own pages/playlists/favorites, but alas, my digital library cannot be shared without more work than I am willing to do, and I just side loaded APKs to load Chrome on an Amazon fire tablet. Still, she's going to make Alexa work for her, with timers and alarms and weather and Amazon Music, maybe. As to Alexa and a router, it would be way cool to command, "Alexa, log into my Wi-Fi router, go to Advanced, get to the DHCP Server, and reserve such and such MAC to such and such IP address, and make it active, SAVE, and reboot the router, and btw, Alexa, I am the Pope and you may kiss my ring."
Question: Can i summon the dark lord using this
Answer: If the question is whether the dark lord is able to be summoned online (and many would argue that he regularly posts in forums on Tor and on Breitbart), then yes, this router would work for that.
Question: How many aliens can fit inside this spaceship
Answer: The answer from TP-Link just sold me on them being my next company. A company that can have fun is a company that will support their products while having fun. Have a top of the line Linksys right now and the last and only firmware update was back in 2017. Never again Linksys. My new router is a TP-Link.

User questions & answers

Question: I am using cat 8 cables. Will this product work? If not what other switch do i need
Answer: I think it sounds most like an MI Audio crunch distortion, which it is supposedly a clone of. The Crunch Distortion is supposedly based on the Rat. I've never played a rat, so I don't want to make the comparison. I will say for like $30 the joyo sounds really good, and after about six months of playing its had no issues. hope I helped a little
Question: Should this connect to arris tg1672g without any configuration on either side? the arris combines "..a 4-port gigabit router.." not working for me
Answer: Mono output , and why wud u use headphones???
Question: Do i have to have 1gig internet speed to have this or no
Answer: Yes, i have used it for bassPretty cool, very agressive ...noisyBut if you dig that for bass it will work.If you're into gutter punk its perfect
Question: how to get plug and play to work? 14 ports not putting out IP, have modem and wifi router connected, but cant get other ports to work
Answer: Go for it. My son uses one with a small Crate ss practice amp, and it sounds phenomenal. He has to keep the volume on the pedal very low though - set above 9 o'clock it was not pleasant. Set around 8 o'clock sounded great. I tried it through a JC-120 and I thought it sounded as good as my George Dennis Wizard Rock, which is normally my favorite distortion pedal for JC. But again, finding the sweet spot in the pedal's output level was important.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this get a wifi 6 update
Answer: I don't think so. This is an 802.11AC router, not an 802.11AX (wifi6) router. AFAIK Asus has already released an 802.11AX version of this router model. Means, if you want the AX type, then you should order that type.
Question: did they fix the bugs that everyone are talking about
Answer: Yes, most bugs seemed to occur with June update. It took them until August to fix. Router now works as intended and better than my previous ac5300. GT 5300 is definitely a step up. Let's hope no more breaking updates.
Question: Is there a port for using an internet sim card
Answer: This router is for home internet, not cellular internet.
Question: How is the range differ from Ac
Answer: @29db If I remember correctly so the range is pretty good 2500 Square feet + should be expected. However, it's already been pulled out of my network. Personally, when adaptive QOS is turned on in my environment, the router reboots every few minutes to an hour including gigabit auto negotiation issues, etc. Again, the range is great but the software has made this a purchase filled with regret. Merlin doesn't have anything out for alternative firmware flavors for the rog rapture either. In short, I would recommend avoiding the headache until 3rd party firmware is able to address the instability issues and user reviews reflect that. In my case, this is the first ASUS network product I have purchased and it's going to be several years before I look back in their direction.

User questions & answers

Question: Is one of the 5 ports used to connect to the router, so that only 4 are available for other device use? Thanks
Answer: Hi TomKM. You are correct - 1 port is used to connect to the router leaving 4 available for other devices. The GS108 offers 8 ports & is just a tad larger than its little brother if you needed a few more ports.
Question: What is the difference between unmanaged and unmanaged
Answer: On Netgear's website, they offer the following features of an Unmanaged Plus switch:-Network monitoring-Gigabit speed-VLAN support for traffic segmentation-Auto "denial-of-service" (DoS) prevention-Troubleshoot connection issues via cable test-Quality of Service (QoS) for traffic prioritization-Loop prevention and broadcast storm controls-IGMP snooping v1, v2 and v3 support for multicast optimization-Rate limiting for better bandwidth allocation-Port mirroring for network monitoring-Jumbo frame support
Question: can I run a line from my router to the switch, then from switch to receiver, blue ray, xbox 360 and Xbox1? will xboxs run ok? dont need both on togthr
Answer: Yes Bertt, you can, and you definitely should, run a twisted-pair ethernet cable from your router to the switch. After you connect the router to the switch, you can run twisted-pair cables to any device that has an RJ45 ethernet port. You've probably maxed out on your router's RJ45 ports, and so adding a switch will greatly expand your capacity to distribute hard-wired internet access to every device in your house that has an RJ45 ethernet port. May I suggest that you buy a switch with as many RJ45 ports as you can afford. The more RJ45 ports your switch has, the more devices (computers, TVs, A/V receivers, DVD and Blu-Ray players, Xbos etc.) you can connect to it for fast, reliable, secure internet access. You won't be sorry that you buy a switch with extra ports. You may not need them now, but eventually you'll probably acquire other devices that have RJ45 ports. It you don't have your house already wired for ethernet distribution, your biggest challenge will be finding wiring paths to every location where you have a computer, TV etc. One last topic: how well you device operate after you've made all of the cable connections through the router to the switch will depend more on the speed of your router and on the speed of your Internet service. Switches are very fast, so they're not likely to be the bottlenneck in a slow Internet connection. Best wishes. JKL
Question: Althought the spec states cat5, does this GS116 also support cat
Answer: Yes this devise will support Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6. Not that Cat5 does not support gigabit speed and is mostly found in older or systems not utilizing gigabit speeds. All systems i have worked on in the last 10 years are Cat5e or Cat6.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it work with a Cisco cablemodem (Cox
Answer: As long as the cabinet has some air space you should be fine. I have not noticed a heat issue while using this switch.
Question: Does anyone know if it has holes on the bottom for wall mounting
Answer: All switches act as repeaters or "boosters" to utilize your term. Cat-5 is limited to 100 meters which is about 330' . In the past I have placed switches at about 200' distance in large factory warehouses to run long distances. They recompile the wave length as attenuation starts around the 300' mark.
Question: what does it do
Answer: Yes, this is my exact setup. You can not only plug these into the Google Wifi puck that is acting as your main router, but also into any of the pucks you're using to create a stronger Wifi signal elsewhere. The small form factor actually makes these ideal for this scenario.
Question: Which port do I connect my router to
Answer: Odd that both answers managed to give a completely wrong answer (or, rather, an answer that ignores the reality of the situation). Yes, you can do that, in the sense that the switch doesn't have a dedicated input, so you can connect an Ethernet cable from your modem's output to a port on the switch, then another cable from another port on the switch to the input on the router, then a third cable from the router's output to a third port on the switch, and it should function the same as if you connected the router's input directly to the modem's output, assuming you don't actually plug anything else into it. However, and this is where the other 2 somehow managed to get the answer completely wrong, neither the switch, nor a modem that isn't also a router, is going to function as a DHCP server. As far as consumer devices go, that will require a router. So the above, which is a total waste of 2 of the 5 ports (as well as requiring an otherwise unnecessary cable), is the only sense in which the answer to your question is "yes". In every other sense, including, presumably, the way you actually meant it, the answer is "no", because something needs to act as a DHCP server for all of the devices connected to the switch. And, in your case, that thing is going to be a router. Put another way, your modem, if not acting as a router, is capable of assigning 1, and only 1, IP address. That's why a modem that's not acting as a router has 1, and only 1, active Ethernet port. A router functions as a DHCP server, which means that it's capable of assigning IP addresses to other devices that connect to it. Put even more simply, only 1 device can get to the Internet via a modem that isn't functioning as a router. Multiple devices can get to the Internet via a router. Therefore, logic dictates that you make the router the 1 device that can access the Internet via the modem and then connect everything else to the Internet through that. A switch like this isn't going to remove that limitation. So the router needs to be the only thing connected to the modem's output, so it unquestionably receives the single opportunity to access the Internet. Then a switch like this can be used to connect other devices to the router's output, since, unlike the modem, it's capable of granting multiple devices connected to it access to the Internet.

User questions & answers

Question: My family has two appartments next to each other, both separate electrical installations. Would this work if we wanted to split the internet bill
Answer: Yes the EX8000 used as a wifi extender you have the option of having a guest network. You can use same SSID name as your main router or use a different SSID altogether. I did have issues with more than one extender on the same network using same SSID name as main router so I had to change one of the extenders to a different SSID.
Question: Has anyone connected a ps4 of xbox one to the wifi from the range extender? if so, signal and game play any good
Answer: If you mean an AT&T router signal, yes. If you mean cell tower signal, then no.
Question: Does it create a new sid or does it exteneded your current sid, so one does not have to switch to differing networks when in range
Answer: the input voltage is from 100 to 240 volts
Question: I don't understand how some people give this 4-5 stars and others can't get it to work and give it 1 star
Answer: there are 4 ports. I use multiple ones as this is the only system I can find that does not change the network name but once a year I also have one break and have to replace it or hard reset it myself.

User questions & answers

Question: Need to run distant wap from this router and divide both router ethernet ports and wap into home/guest networks. possible with just this and wap
Answer: A lot of the newer devices have their default passwords listed on the bottom of the device. A factory reset should change the password back to that value.
Question: Need any license for vpn connection? any kind of license
Answer: Hi, Rudi. It is recommended that you only connect 32 devices at the same time for optimum use, but it can handle more than that. You shouldn't have a problem with your setup.
Question: Rv260 wants me to set pptp ip range to a different subnet from vlan... can i connect and remote desktop into an existing vlan pc through this router
Answer: My unit does not get hot and runs mildly warm. I have lots of open space around the Linksys for ventilation. I have experienced no instability with three users.
Question: Rv260 won't let me set pptp ip range within same vlan1, i need this to work for business? no excuses
Answer: Nope, Tomato has not been ported to these newer routers. Shibby Tomato might be in the future....but he is slowing down and might be out of the game, haven't seen anything from him for a while anyway. I am running the most current as of this writing release of DD-WRT on two of these routers with no problems. I have two WRT3200s as bridged clients on 5ghz connected to a WRT1900ACSV2 access point, and use the 2.4 radio for my devices. This configuration works very well for me and I'm covering about half my 10 Acres with solid connectivity. I've been pretty happy with them, and DD-WRT is magnitudes more stable and has far more options than the stock firmware. If you do go with DD-WRT.....follow the download links to the betas directory, then drill down in that for the current Linksys devices. Take a gander at the DD-WRT forum for the Marevel chipsets for up to date install directions and tips for this router.
