10 best wired routers
Wired routers are networking devices used to manage and direct network traffic within a local area network (LAN). These devices are closely related to routers, networking products, computer accessories, and electronics. Here's what you need to know about wired routers:
Routing Network Traffic: A wired router is primarily responsible for routing data packets between different devices within a local network. It serves as the central hub that directs data traffic between the devices connected to it.
Wired Connections: Unlike wireless routers, which support both wired and wireless connections, wired routers primarily rely on Ethernet cables to connect devices. They typically have multiple Ethernet ports for connecting computers, printers, servers, and other networked devices.
Local Area Network (LAN): Wired routers are commonly used in small to medium-sized LANs, such as those found in homes, offices, and small businesses. They provide a stable and high-speed wired connection, which can be advantageous for tasks that require low latency and high bandwidth, such as online gaming or large file transfers.
IP Address Assignment: Wired routers often include DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) functionality, which automatically assigns IP addresses to devices on the network. This simplifies the process of setting up and managing a LAN.
Firewall and Security: Many wired routers come with built-in firewalls and security features to protect the network from external threats and unauthorized access. These security measures help safeguard the data and devices within the network.
Port Forwarding: Wired routers can be configured to allow specific types of traffic to pass through to designated devices within the network. This is useful for hosting services such as web servers, online gaming, or remote desktop connections.
Quality of Service (QoS): Some wired routers offer QoS settings that allow users to prioritize certain types of network traffic, ensuring that critical applications or devices receive the necessary bandwidth and low latency.
Management Interface: Wired routers are typically configured and managed through a web-based interface. Users can access this interface to set up network settings, security configurations, and other options.
Internet Connectivity: Wired routers are used to connect a LAN to the internet. They often have an "uplink" port that connects to the internet via a modem or other broadband access device.
Performance and Stability: Wired routers are known for their stability and consistent performance, making them a reliable choice for networks where a consistent and fast connection is essential.
Compatibility: Wired routers are compatible with various devices and operating systems, making them versatile for different network setups.
In summary, wired routers are networking devices that play a crucial role in directing and managing network traffic within a LAN. They provide stable and high-speed wired connections, offer security features to protect the network, and allow for the efficient sharing of internet access among multiple devices. These routers are commonly used in homes, offices, and small businesses to establish and maintain local networks.

User questions & answers
Question: | I would like to use this router for a public space using ubiquiti access points. how many ip address can this router handle |
Answer: | I have not had a requirement to do that, but I have created 5 vlans, and 5 L3 sub interfaces. Each interface has a /24 dhcp address range, not all have all have been issued out but potentially 1254 addresses, this has not caused the router any issues. |
Question: | does this have the DHCP server functionality |
Answer: | Yes, it does have DHCP and is a router. The firewall, as deliverd, is pretty limited and your really should build your own firewall rules. |
Question: | Is the AC power adapter included in the purchase |
Answer: | Yes! This does come with a 12 volt DC power supply. It can also be powered by passive PoE (Specifically, Ubiquiti's proprietary 24 volt Passive Poe injectors and switches. In addition to the passive Poe going into to eth Port 0, you can pass that out of Eth port 4 and power another ubiquiti device that supports their passive Poe (Think their unifi AP lines, Airmax outdoor radios etc.) One other side note to keep in mind is that if one uses the included 12 volt DC adapter, pass through Poe is not supported from Eth port 4, as there is not enough wattage. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Its the same edgerouter x advanced gigabit ethernet routers er-x 256mb storage 5 gigabit rj45 ports |
Answer: | There are 2 EdgeRouter X units listed on Amazon. They are both the same. Amazon seems to default to the more expensive one when you search for it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am using cat 8 cables. Will this product work? If not what other switch do i need |
Answer: | It should work fine. Keep in mind this is a gigabit switch and cat8 would more typically be used for 10gb networking but its all compatible. |
Question: | Should this connect to arris tg1672g without any configuration on either side? the arris combines "..a 4-port gigabit router.." not working for me |
Answer: | Your configuration should look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1, 2, 3, or 4 -> Netgear 8-Port Switch Your Cable Modem provides 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports and when you connect the Netgear 8-Port switch you lose 2 ports (one on the cable modem & one on the Netgear and end up with 10 Gigabit Ethernet Ports instead of 4. No configuration is needed. If one of the devices you're adding is a Wi-Fi router, then your configuration will look like this: (Internet) Cable -> ARRIS TG1672G -> Port 1 -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 8-Port Switch. If you want all devices to be able to see each other, then you can have up to 7 of them plugged into the Netgear Router. |
Question: | Do i have to have 1gig internet speed to have this or no |
Answer: | No. It's top speed is Gigabit (1000 Mbps), but it will work with 10/100 Mbps devices well. It's not just limited to Internet but any devices that wish to communicate with each other i.e. computer to Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, etc ... and usually those devices have gigabit Ethernet ports so they can communicate with each other at the gigabit speeds. |
Question: | how to get plug and play to work? 14 ports not putting out IP, have modem and wifi router connected, but cant get other ports to work |
Answer: | Make your flow as follows: Modem -> Wi-Fi Router -> Netgear 16-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. All your devices (up to 15 of them) will get their IP address from the Wi-Fi Router. You may also want to consider labeling your cables. I have two 16-port switches, one Unmanaged (for Internet) and one Managed (for private network), and all the cables are both color-coded and labeled. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is one of the 5 ports used to connect to the router, so that only 4 are available for other device use? Thanks |
Answer: | Hi TomKM. You are correct - 1 port is used to connect to the router leaving 4 available for other devices. The GS108 offers 8 ports & is just a tad larger than its little brother if you needed a few more ports. |
Question: | What is the difference between unmanaged and unmanaged |
Answer: | On Netgear's website, they offer the following features of an Unmanaged Plus switch:-Network monitoring-Gigabit speed-VLAN support for traffic segmentation-Auto "denial-of-service" (DoS) prevention-Troubleshoot connection issues via cable test-Quality of Service (QoS) for traffic prioritization-Loop prevention and broadcast storm controls-IGMP snooping v1, v2 and v3 support for multicast optimization-Rate limiting for better bandwidth allocation-Port mirroring for network monitoring-Jumbo frame support |
Question: | can I run a line from my router to the switch, then from switch to receiver, blue ray, xbox 360 and Xbox1? will xboxs run ok? dont need both on togthr |
Answer: | Yes Bertt, you can, and you definitely should, run a twisted-pair ethernet cable from your router to the switch. After you connect the router to the switch, you can run twisted-pair cables to any device that has an RJ45 ethernet port. You've probably maxed out on your router's RJ45 ports, and so adding a switch will greatly expand your capacity to distribute hard-wired internet access to every device in your house that has an RJ45 ethernet port. May I suggest that you buy a switch with as many RJ45 ports as you can afford. The more RJ45 ports your switch has, the more devices (computers, TVs, A/V receivers, DVD and Blu-Ray players, Xbos etc.) you can connect to it for fast, reliable, secure internet access. You won't be sorry that you buy a switch with extra ports. You may not need them now, but eventually you'll probably acquire other devices that have RJ45 ports. It you don't have your house already wired for ethernet distribution, your biggest challenge will be finding wiring paths to every location where you have a computer, TV etc. One last topic: how well you device operate after you've made all of the cable connections through the router to the switch will depend more on the speed of your router and on the speed of your Internet service. Switches are very fast, so they're not likely to be the bottlenneck in a slow Internet connection. Best wishes. JKL |
Question: | Althought the spec states cat5, does this GS116 also support cat |
Answer: | Yes this devise will support Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6. Not that Cat5 does not support gigabit speed and is mostly found in older or systems not utilizing gigabit speeds. All systems i have worked on in the last 10 years are Cat5e or Cat6. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this have an inbuilt firewall and rule set customization with ciscos OS, and is this direct from cisco or is it rebuilt |
Answer: | The RV160 is not rack-mountable but a desktop model. You can place it on a cabinet/rack shelf but it does not have rack-mount brackets. More technical information about the product is available at https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/rv160-vpn-router/datasheet-c78-741410.html |
Question: | Can I mount this in a server rack |
Answer: | No. Depending on what type is your Internet connection you can have either DHCP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP or L2TP type of connectivity. Only the static IP address remains constant, whereas, all other types of connectivity may use DHCP or static IP address. More information about how to configure the device you can find at https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/routers/csbr/RV160/Administration_Guide/b_RV160x_AG.pdf Device online emulator is available at https://www.cisco.com/assets/sol/sb/RV160_Emulators/RV160_Emulator_v1-0-00-14/index.htm#/systemSummary |
Question: | Does this constantly change my ip address? if not how is it a vpn |
Answer: | No, the RV160 is wired only router which means that it does not support wireless connectivity. The iPhone will need Wi-Fi connectivity via a Wireless Access Point or Wireless Router like RV160W to connect to the Internet. |
Question: | Can an iphone access internet through a configuration on the model of cisco rv 160 vpn router, not the rv 160w model |
Answer: | I have bonded/VDSL Windstream and it does not appear to be working with mine. Windsteam is charging me $10 a month to rent their modem, and this is the third modem I've purchased now that claims to work with Windstream, that does not. But, none of them are VDSL compliant. So you need to check with Windstream to see if your service is bonded/VDSL and if it is make sure you purchase a modem that supports that. |

Question: | What is the difference between the Black version and the non black version of the router other than the price offered |
Answer: | I believe the white one is a unifi controller and the other is edge max. It’s really, again, I think, just the software used to configure and control each. |
Question: | Can I separate networks, eg. Guest and private |
Answer: | You can have those separated by creating different Vlans. |
Question: | Can i assign multiple ssid's |
Answer: | This router does not support wireless routing itself. You would connect a wireless router to one of the network ports and set the SSID on that router. You could connect an additional wireless router to another port to set up another SSID. |
