14 best fiber optics modems
Fiber optics modems are integral components in modern networking, providing high-speed data transmission capabilities over fiber optic cables. Here's some information about fiber optics modems and their relevance to network transceivers, networking products, computer accessories, and electronics:
Network Transceivers: Fiber optics modems often incorporate network transceivers, which are devices that transmit and receive data signals between optical fibers and network devices like routers, switches, and computers. These transceivers enable the conversion of electrical signals into optical signals for transmission through fiber optic cables.
Networking Products: Fiber optics modems are a subset of networking products. They play a critical role in long-distance and high-speed data communication within networks. They are commonly used in various networking environments, including data centers, telecommunications networks, and broadband internet connections.
High-Speed Data Transmission: Fiber optics modems are known for their ability to transmit data at incredibly high speeds over long distances. They use light signals to carry data, which can travel at nearly the speed of light through optical fibers, making them ideal for applications requiring rapid data transfer.
Secure and Reliable: Fiber optics modems offer enhanced security and reliability compared to traditional copper-based communication systems. Fiber optic cables are immune to electromagnetic interference and eavesdropping, making them a secure choice for sensitive data transmission.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the polish on the st connector? apc or upc |
Answer: | Will work if your camera has an ethernet cable connection. This is not for a wireless device. |
Question: | Will this cable plug into the 41085-mwc? if so, which end of it? both ends? i am looking for a cable to go from a wall 41085-mwc to my toslink |
Answer: | The 200 amp service is the maximum current your circuit breaker panel will provide. This would not be what you are concerned about. The device is for typical 3 prong outlets supplying 110v-120v. |
Question: | Can i use this to extend at&t fiber cable type (4.8 indoor/outdoor riser io48-001d-drk-4-wpvc) from the wall where it come through to the ont |
Answer: | I believe the above answers are not exactly true. The rated speeds are the maximum theoretical speeds possible for the chip, but not what you would ever see in real life. Take a look at these comparisons of two TP-Link AV500 / 600 units: https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-reviews/32454-tp-link-homeplug-head-to-head?start=2 In actual tests, both of them were significantly below 500 Mbps, with the cheaper one averaging more like 70 Mbps. With that in mind, I would expect a faster chip to give better performance, even if you are limited by ISP speed. You will not see the full bandwidth from your ISP in any case due to losses in the system. Since the two compared above had the same (or at least very similar) rated speeds but very different real-world speeds, it seems to indicate that the newer chips and whatever other hardware and firmware go into these things simply perform better than the old ones. My recommendation is to look for sites that give actual measurements of these things' performance and decide from there which one is the best value for you. As a personal note, I have a couple of these ones (the AV1000 model). My ISP gives 100 Mbps download speed, and I am seeing between 50-80 Mbps in actual use, depending on which plugs I use. I haven't been able to test LAN speed yet for local transfers, because I need to order a couple more first. |
Question: | what type of lc connector is on the "simplex - os1-9/125um (1m, sc/apc to lc)" patch cable -- is the lc connector lc/upc or lc/apc type connector |
Answer: | As long as one is connected to your router you don't need any other extenders. I current have one hooked up to my router and have 5 other ones plugged in different outlets around the house with no issue . I hope that helps you out. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Confirming that only one device can be connected to the modem, despite additional lan ports? you can't connect, say your pc and a router at same time |
Answer: | The MB8600 will allow for one device. You can connect your PC to the MB8600, or connect a router to the MB8600.If, in the very unusual situation, you are paying for and receiving more than one IP address from your provider, then you can directly connect up to 4 devices to the MB8600. |
Question: | I also need wifi, what do you recommend |
Answer: | The MB8600 modem will work with any WiFi router. Given the speed of the MB8600, you should be using at least an AC1900 router and given the other devices in your network, you might be able to take advantage of a wireless speed even faster than AC1900.The Ethernet port on the MB8600 simply plugs into the WiFi router of your choice. The router should be current enough to have a Gigabit WAN port (10/100/1000 Ethernet port), since you will need that for the speeds that the MB8600 can deliver. And for now, 1 Gbps service is the fastest cable service Comcast is providing in the US. When Comcast or other cable Internet service providers begin providing service speeds over 1Gbps, the MB8600 has the bonded Ethernet ports which will allow the MB8600 to deliver speeds above 1 Gbps. We are not aware of a consumer-home/small office router that does Ethernet port bonding today, but they are coming. Ethernet port bonding is available on Enterprise level routers (routers used in large organizations), but we can't recommend that class of product for a consumer at this point. They are more complicated than you need and more expensive. Bonded Ethernet ports for consumers will appear by the time Comcast is ready to begin delivering speeds above 1Gbps and the MB8600 will be ready to deliver those speeds. In summary: Use at least an AC1900 wireless router Be sure the router you choose has a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port. |
Question: | Does this use the now-notorious Intel Puma 6 chipset |
Answer: | Model MB8600 and all Motorola products use Broadcom chipsets and do not have the problem associated with the Puma 6 chipset. |
Question: | Do all four Ethernet ports on this modem output the same amount of bandwidth or are there only certain ports that operate at maximum capacity |
Answer: | The reason for four ports on a modem requires some explanation. It is important to understand the MB8600 does not do routing. The MB8600 is a modem only. A router can be connected to any of the MB8600 GigE ports. The link between the router and the modem is then capable of using the full rate of the one Gbps service Comcast currently can provide with their new DOCSIS 3.1 service. In the future, Comcast and other cable services are expected to offer services faster than on 1 Gbps. When those faster services are offered, the additional ports in the MB8600 will be needed. Ports 1 and 2 can be bonded to allow up to 2 Gbps to be delivered by the MB8600. The other two ports on the MB8600 are there to allow additional port bonding for speeds over 2 Gbps. When Comcast has service speeds over 1 Gbps, the router connected to the MB8600 also needs to do port bonding to take advantage of the port bonding in the MB8600. Routers used by consumers today do not support port bonding. Some routers used in corporate networks do support port bonding. In the future, routers used in homes and small businesses will be sold that support port bonding so they can take advantage of future service speeds that will be faster than 1Gbps. In summary, the four ports on the MB8600 are there to allow the MB8600 to deliver service speeds above 1 Gbps WHEN THOSE SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE. That is good design. Think twice before you buy a modem that pretends to offer speeds above 1Gbps and does not have multiple ports that can be bonded. You can not get a speed above 1 Gbps unless you have a way to get the fast speed out of the modem. The MB8600 is designed to allow speeds above 1 Gbps to be delivered to a router with bonded GigE ports. Other modems are not as well designed. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this model different than the arris surfboard sb |
Answer: | The sb6121 only has speeds of 172 Mbps download and up to 131 Mbps upload. This model has up to 343 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload. |
Question: | Going with the cable modem option what’s the best router to pair this with for spectrum |
Answer: | It depends on your needs. Needs are based on the number of devices connected and the size of area you are trying to cover. I would highly recommend a mesh network unless your home is 1200sqft or smaller. A centrally located router could cover that. The biggest problem is getting the 5ghz frequency to reach throughout the home. The 5ghz gives you speeds over 30mbps on wireless devices. 5ghz will reach roughly 40ft in all directions from your access point (ap). A mesh system gives you multiple ap and thus more area covered by the 5ghz. |
Question: | How many devices can connect at once? Is that that the 8x refers to |
Answer: | The 8x doesn't refer to the number of devices you can connect to it. You only want to connect one device and that's your WiFi router. You wireless router determines how many devices can be connect based on the available number of ip addresses on the wireless device. The 8x refers to the speed of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Its informing you on the speed of DOCSIS 2.0 vs the newer DOCSIS 3.0. Ultimately your speed will be determined by how much you want to pay your internet provider. And you can determine how many devices you want to connect by the router you choose. |
Question: | Do I also have to buy a router for the modem? And to make sure it obviously speeds up internet connection right |
Answer: | If you only need to have one computer hooked up to the internet you do not need a router. If you want to hook up more than one computer or if you want a wireless network, you will need to buy the appropriate router. My internet speed went from 20mb to 100mb(the speed I pay extra for). TWC has also stopped charging me $8.00 a month for the use of their inadequate equipment. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why does it say 4x ethernet ports in your description where there is only one |
Answer: | Because Amazon hasn't corrected their product subscription. I submitted one two weeks ago and has yet to be done. If you need more than 1 ethernet port, then this one is not for you. This has only (1) 2.5 Multi-Gig port. |
Question: | Does netgear cm500-1aznas work with tds provider |
Answer: | Yes. But you need to call the TDS customer service and provide your CMAC or SN to register your device. These numbers are on the box and the unit |
Question: | Can you use a phone to ethernet splitter for voice to work |
Answer: | I have never heard of a phone to internet splitter, at least not expressed in those terms. However, for VOIP (which means Voice Over Internet Protocall), you must have at least one phone jack in a modem, or a modem-router combination. Some modems have two such jacks, which could provide two different "lines." Most importantly, you must have your internet service provider's PERMISSION to install and use such a modem, or modem-router combination! My own ISP (Wow, aka Wowway.com) REFUSED to give such permission because that would cut into their profits, since they would no longer receive a monthly FEE to RENT their age-old junk, much of which are at least five years old, which is like a millenia in this day of super-fast-paced electronic offerings. I had to send back every VOIP-capable modem I bought from Amazon and other places because my ISP REFUSED to enable them to work with their so-called service(s). Talk about anti-competitive business practices ... U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are you paying any attention? |
Question: | I understand that this modem says it will only work with xfinity. but has anyone tried this with spectrum? (aka time warner cable |
Answer: | Hello. I am writing this Dec 2, 2020 and just activated this modem 2 days ago with Spectrum. It is not on the list of approved modems, but oddly enough the CM400 is. I just told the tech support who activated it that it was compatible and it's worked fine with no problems. I went from 100-120 mbs on my 100 mb plan to 250 to 450 mbs, still on the 100 mb plan. This modem is not on the list of approved models but it seems to work fine so far without periodic latency/drops like the Arris model from Spectrum had. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this a pair device? meaning it brings 2 devices |
Answer: | You can as long as your IP camera does not use Power over Ethernet. This device converts Ethernet to fiber, that's all, but does it nicely |
Question: | Is the signal type ttl? or does it use some kind of non-return-to-zero signaling |
Answer: | I do not know. https://www.tp-link.com/us/products/details/cat-43_MC200CM.html This is the url to the device |
Question: | Unit uses 5v dc. how many amps does it require? is the case steel |
Answer: | Yes and better stability. Switch your cable to cat 7 for better speed. If your willing to spend the money, get a 3ft cat7 cable connect that cable from modem to this converter, get a FO cable for 100 ft run ( they are about $40 to $50 on eBay) connect the cable to a second converter at the end of the run and use a 3ft cat 7 cable to connect to your device. By the way on the back of the converter there is a switch that says auto and force, switch it to force. Auto means if your only going to connect this converter to another device and not to another converter. To learn more, go to YouTube for videos on the installation and use of this great product! Good luck! |
Question: | What is the warranty on this device |
Answer: | I contacted TP-Link to ask them this question. Version 4 of the product supports 10/100/1000 auto-negotiation. Version 3 and older only supports gigabit. |

Question: | Can i connect from this media converter to a fiber gbic in an hp switch (assuming correct connectors, fiber type |
Answer: | The MCM1110SFP allows you to convert and extend different networks over a Gigabit fiber cable connection using the SFP of your choice. Please contact us directly for a recommendation based on your specific configuration requirements. Malcolm, StarTech.com Support |
Question: | does this come as a pair |
Answer: | Hi,With two of these media converters you can convert back to RJ-45 on the other end of the fiber line.Let us know if you have any other questions.Thank you, NickCustomer SupportStarTech.com |
Question: | How many watts does the power supply consume |
Answer: | In short, yes. However I would point out that unless your cable runs exceed ~350ft; running fiber would be overkill. Most homes in the US can get away with CAT6 cable runs and still be within the 350ft range. A good use example for this type of device would be connecting two network segments separated by thousands (or tens of thousands) of feet; like two buildings on a college campus. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the diameter in mm |
Answer: | Theoretically you can, but there is more to check in specifications other than correct fiber type and connectors. You also need to check if wavelength of HP matches converter (it should be 850 nm (and not 1310nm - some MM transceivers are 1300/1310), AND - even more importantly, and this is not always obvious - datarate (speed) must be Gigabit (or 1.25G in some specs) - because fiber ports, unlike UTP ports can't do autosensing. If HP GBIC is Gigabit speed (1.25G), 850 nm - then chances are, that it can work |
Question: | Does this need a coupler to extend verizon fios ont cable |
Answer: | No, the price you see on the listing is per unit price. if you need a pair of units, you need order 2 units. |
Question: | Can this be used outdoors in hot climate |
Answer: | 4 watts |
Question: | Is this cable suitable for outdoor runs |
Answer: | The operating temperature for the ET91000SFP2 is 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F) Atha, StarTech.com Support |
