Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) are electronic devices or integrated circuits (ICs) used in various fields of electronics, including networking products and computer accessories. DACs play a crucial role in converting digital signals into analog signals, which can then be used to produce audio or other analog output. Here's what you need to know about DACs in the context of networking products and computer accessories:
Functionality: DACs are primarily used to convert digital audio signals or data into analog signals. In the context of networking products, they may be used for converting digital data streams into analog signals for transmission over analog communication channels.
Audio Applications: DACs are commonly used in audio equipment, such as sound cards, amplifiers, and headphones. They convert digital audio files or streams into analog signals that can be played through speakers or headphones.
Network Transceivers: In networking products, such as network switches or routers, DACs are used to convert digital signals into analog signals for transmission over copper cables. This is often seen in the context of Ethernet connections, where DACs help transmit digital data over copper wires.
Resolution: The quality of the analog signal produced by a DAC depends on its resolution. Higher-resolution DACs can produce more accurate and higher-quality analog signals.
Compatibility: DACs need to be compatible with the digital source they are connected to and the analog equipment they are feeding. This includes considerations like signal formats, voltage levels, and connector types.
Applications: DACs are used in various applications beyond networking and audio. They can also be found in instrumentation, industrial automation, and more, where there is a need to convert digital data into analog signals for control or monitoring purposes.
Bit Depth and Sampling Rate: The quality of the analog signal is determined by the bit depth and sampling rate of the DAC. A higher bit depth and sampling rate generally result in better audio quality.
External DACs: Some computer accessories, such as external USB DACs, are designed to improve the audio quality of computers and mobile devices. They connect via USB and provide high-quality audio output for headphones or external speakers.
In summary, DACs are essential components in the world of electronics, particularly in the context of audio equipment and networking products. They enable the conversion of digital data into analog signals, allowing for the transmission of audio and data over various communication channels and ensuring the compatibility of digital sources with analog equipment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone know if this works under linux |
Answer: | It's a DAC... so of course it does. Not sure about MQA since I don't bother with that... but USB and Optical inputs work fine. Haven't tried BT from Linux, so that might have problems - works fine from Windows however. No drivers needed on either platform. |
Question: | No Trigger output to turn on an amp |
Answer: | You has to pepare what output you want to use b4 using and setup on output setting on the units |
Question: | Can i connect this unit to my android cell phone (lg v30+) using an otg usb cable? i want to use the amazon hd music service via my phone |
Answer: | Why use otg? Just use usb c to usb b cable for direct connection. I used a JSAUX 3.0 usb c to b cable. |
Question: | Will signal output to both xlr and rca simultaniously, as to run to amp via xlr out and powered sub via rca out and retain preamp functionality |
Answer: | It does output both simultaneously. I run in preamp mode outputting the xlr to preamp, and rca to headphone amp. I don't know if you can do what you describe with a sub |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have powered speakers that I plug into my laptop 3mm headphone jack. Can I use this product to get more volume & better audio quality |
Answer: | That's what I use the Dragonfly (Black) for. I expected a subtle improvement, but found it to be night and day! The cheapo DAC and output stage circuitry that's built into the laptop was really limiting the sound quality. |
Question: | Can you still use inline headphone controls when using the dac with an iPhone |
Answer: | No you cannot nor can you use the mic in the headphones for making or recieving calls ...luckily you do get notification ...and you can just pull the lightning connector to answer the call ..using iphone in normal manner ..i had this exact Q after recieving my unit .. |
Question: | What's the difference between red and black |
Answer: | In performance, both models incorporate the 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC chip, the 9010 in Black and the higher-performance 9016 in Red. While the Black uses the same headphone amp and analog volume control found in previous version, the new Red includes the latest ESS headphone amp and a bit-perfect digital volume control that resides on the 9016 DAC chip itself. In power the Black puts out 1.2 volts: enough power to drive all preamplifier input circuits and a wide range of efficient headphones. The red with its higher 2.1-volt output will be compatible with a wider range of headphones, including power-hungry, low-efficiency model. |
Question: | i know these DACs are mainly for high end headphones , but anyone know if it will make a better (or slightly better) audio on $10 -$30 earphones |
Answer: | I hesitated to answer this question since it's about 4 years old now, but I'm sure somebody else will be wondering the same thing. I must say it's one of the most illogically comical questions that I've ever read. Let me explain. It's like asking if using jet fuel will improve the grass cutting performance of a lawnmower. Obviously, it won't. You just need a more efficient lawnmower. The DAC + preamp + plus headphone amp merely will make the headphones louder but NOT make them sound better. In fact, most low-cost headphones (in the $10 - $30 range) typically suffer from sibilance (hiss), muffled bass, tinny highs, too dominant mid-range, and distortion at higher volumes due to using low-quality components. Therefore, it's highly probable that the AudioQuest DragonFly will make cheap headphones sound exponentially worse. As the old saying goes: "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." |
Question: | I want to use this for my Audio Technica M50xs. Worth it |
Answer: | Let the specs speak for themselves: FiiO E10 Specs Power Supply Standard Micro USB port Output Power 200 mW @ 32 Ω Sample Rate Maximum of 24-bit/96 kHz supported Signal to Noise Ratio ≥108 dB Digital Output 1x Coaxial digital output, stereo PCM format Frequency Response 20 Hz to 20 kHz Impedance Recommended Headphone Impedance: 16 to 150 Ω ATH-M50x Headphones Frequency Response 15 Hz to 28 kHz Sensitivity 99 dB Impedance 38 Ohms Maximum Power Handling 1600 mW |
Question: | What's the Difference with the E10K & E10? I loved my E10 but it's starting to fail, so I'm looking for a new one |
Answer: | I have both E10 and E10K,1) E10 uses a mini USB cable, and E10K uses a micro USB cable (same as Android phone's)2) E10K uses different chips, which makes its output power bigger3) E10K's bass boost is betterIf you are satisfied with E10, I recommend you to buy the new model E10K |
Question: | What outputs does it have? I see only one headphone out (small jack). Does it perhaps have RCA in the back |
Answer: | there are total three outputs in E10K1. Front: 3.5mm headphone out port - you can use volume control2. Rear- 3.5mm Line Out port - no volume control, you can use 3.5mm stereo to RCA converter cable to connect your RCA devices.3. Rear- Digital Coaxial Audio Output. |
Question: | so you plug this in any usb port and voila?, how do you eq |
Answer: | If you are on a Windows machine, you'll want to download foobar2000 to use as your dedicated music player. There are many forums online which go into great detail on how to set up foobar2000 as it does appear to be quite complicated at first glance so I won't bore you with any of the specifics here; but once you get the hang of things it does get a bit easier to understand and follow the UI and the possibilities you have with foobar2000. You just have to do your research; Amazon is not the best place for this sort of thing if you ask me. I personally prefer ASIO over WASAPI; FiiO has their own proprietary ASIO driver uniquely designed for the E10K which you can download the firmware for on their website. You will also have to download and install the necessary ASIO support component which is available on foobar2000's website. If you do buy this DAC/AMP and plan on using FiiO's ASIO driver like I do, be aware that you have to close out of all applications using ASIO before disconnecting the E10K, otherwise this may result in a BSOD. They explicitly state this in the owner's manual as well. Lastly, but most importantly you will want to listen to high quality audio sources (READ: Lossless audio). I prefer FLAC encoded music files, but lossless is lossless; it doesn't really matter what codec the files are in. I won't discuss bit depths or sample rates here because that's just another can of worms, but do your best to avoid listening to lossy audio files such as MP3s; you will only be doing yourself a disservice. And of course you want to have some decent headphones :) If you fancy closed back headphones, I can strongly recommend the SRH1540s by Shure. It's what I'm using at the moment. So as you can see, there's just a little more to it than just 'plugging in the E10K and voila' ;) Happy listening! |

User questions & answers
Question: | When will these be available to purchase |
Answer: | It’s available now |
Question: | Can it run while charging |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Hi it’s supports iPod and iPad? thank you |
Answer: | For iPad Pros and the latest ipadOS, you can just directly use the usb-c to usb-a that comes with this dac. For iPhones and iPods you do need the camera connection kit. I am using it with my iPad pro 2018 with the included usb-c cable |
Question: | can this be used for my car stereo |
Answer: | I strongly advise against doing so. I'm assuming your question is "can I plug this into the auxiliary input on my car?" In which case, no. Doing so would be "amping and amp" and that's a no-no in electronics. You run a really high risk of burning up both things when connected in this way. The Hip-Dac is one of the few products in this product category that does not provide a line out or a pre-out. It also does not do bluetooth. Typically I find that a phone's or mp3 player's headphone output is sufficient to plug directly into a car stereo. The road is not a great place for hearing that last 10-20% of fidelity these products provide. However, if you still need the option, the Topping NX4-DSD and the Fiio Q1 mkII are similar products that offer a line-out that you can use to plug into your car stereo. |

Answer: | Yes, it will work on both USB2.0 and 3.0. As long as the input voltage is 5V, which is standard for USB, the device will operate as intended. |
Question: | Will it power the dt 990 pro 250ohm to max volume with usb connection |
Answer: | Yes it will no problem, I've used it with 300 ohm headphones like the hd600 before |
Question: | The case for this is so ugly and impracticle. Are there plans to design a better stackable case |
Answer: | What exactly isn’t stackable about this case? It’s flat now n bottom and on top. |
Question: | Does this include the power adapter? Thanks |
Answer: | It doesn't come with one unless you buy the bundle that I've noticed on here. I didn't buy one with it and although it runs on USB power I was experiencing some crackles and pops. Just got a cheapo power supply for it (Belker 36W Universal 3V 4.5V 5V 6V 7.5V 9V 12V AC DC Adapter Power Supply) no more crackles and pops 👍👍 |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the output impedance |
Answer: | The Recommend headphones for this device is between 32- 600 ohms. Some reviewers suggest 600 ohms, As for the RCA output I'm not sure but it has enough gain to drive my Denon amp |
Question: | What recommended to do? plugging the dac with usb or dc power? what will be the best option |
Answer: | Hi. As far as I know, this DAC can be connected only with the power cable. No USB charge available. |
Question: | I have a pair if beyerdynamic dt900! will this amp improve sound quilty and volume? using headphone for playing while drumming |
Answer: | It will depend the impedance of the headphone itself, because of the fact that the amp is relatively low power, but I can’t say if it will be an improvement if I don’t know what you are comparing it to. But compared to a phone or a laptop, it is a significant improvement |
Question: | Is there any line noise or pooping sound when taking in optical audio output from a computer? Any popping when music stops playing |
Answer: | I’ve never had any line noise or popping using optical. That is via a TV not computer but can’t imagine it would be different. The only popping I’ve ever had was if the power was pulled from the unit and then plugged back in while the volume was up but you shouldn’t ever need to unplug it, it doesn’t run hot or draw power when the switch is off. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need drivers for this to work properly |
Answer: | If you have Windows 10, your computer will automatically download and install driver once you plug in the K5 Pro (and turn it on). However, I think this will limit to 24 bit and 192K. To get 32 bit and 768K, you will need to down load Fiio's own driver. Google "Fiio's Support" to find the driver. |
Question: | Will this improve the quality of music streamed from Spotify? I currently have my sound card setting to 24bit 192khz |
Answer: | No. Music streamed from Spotify will always be compressed. To really notice this Fiio DAC you will need a FLAC audio file and a good pair of headphones. |
Question: | Would this would be an upgrade from the creative sound blasterx g |
Answer: | That depends, the G6 is a clean sounding dac/amp, surprisingly good for a "gamer" oriented device, people think creative, gamer type device and think its junk without trying it, its actually very good. Its has a high quality dac and amp. If you're using the k5 pro or g6 for gaming, the g6 wins. The k5 has no mic input so that is a major issue especially on console, pain on PC. Also the G6 can easily drive headphones up to 300 ohm, i mean really push em hard. For music both are good, the k5 pro has more power so if youre only using it for music and you have 600 ohm headphones Then k5 pro all the way. I have both. I was using my k5 daily until I got my schiit hel, now i use the hel as its much simpler to keep it hooked to my PC for gaming and music. My G6 is hooked to my ps4. The difference in sound quality isnt big at all, and software for the g6 is really good, you can do so much with it and tweak the sound to your liking. With the k5 you're stuck with no software, you cant save different sound profiles to it. Even if creative SB stops support for G6, we still have the current software which is good and theres been zero need to update it. Unless you have high ohm cans, you will likely be disappointed going G6 to k5. If its just music or you don't need a mic, k5 pro is very good |
Question: | What cables doni need to connect this to my PC |
Answer: | To connect to your PC you only need the included USB-B cable (looks like a printer cable). You will also obviously need a power cable (also included). |

Question: | Anyone know if these are compatible with the unifi 48-port switches (with sfp+ ports |
Answer: | Yes. I'm using several of the 5 meter cables to route through the CMA on each of my servers to a couple Unifi 16-Port Aggregation switches. I've also used them on my 48 port 750w switches' SFP+ ports before. It's a different model variation, however I'm still pretty certain it will work for yours. Also, I'd like to add, I'm using a bunch of different SFP+ cables for my Unifi equipment. I'm yet to run into an SFP+ compatibility issue across the different variations I've used. Including cables made for Cisco, Mellanox, Intel and brands from 10Gtek, Cable Matters, Wiitek, ipolex, QSFPTEK, to Ubiquiti's own SFP+ transceivers/DAC's. TL;DR, honestly, Ubiquiti SFP+ ports seem to be compatible with just about every cable on the market. If it fits, it should work. Also, if it for some reason doesn't, you should be able to return the cable and get a refund. |
