User questions & answers

Question: So how do control the cable modem if comcast doesn't provide one
Answer: Once you install the modem you can either go online and register the device or call Comcast with the serial number. It will then activate and you are good to go. I’ve had no issues with mine at all. And online registration was very easy.
Question: Quick start quide says it doesn't have wifi capability or router. so, can i get to xfinitywifi wirelessly or not
Answer: Model MB7621 is a bridge modem, or a Cable modem without a built in WiFi router. You can either purchase an all in one (modem with the built in WiFi router) such as a Motorola MG7700, or purchase a a WiFi router to connect to the MB7621.
Question: Which one is better for my needs - the mb-7621 or the mb-7420? comcast highest speed for home use is 150 mbps and 100 for downloads
Answer: 3 things I can tell you. 1. The 7621 is 24 x 8 channels vs 16 x4 for the 7420. More channels means better flow of the data. 2. The 7621 can handle 1000 Mbps vs 643 Mbps for the 7420. Good for future upgrades of your internet speed if needed. 3. The 7621 came out in Dec 2017 vs 2015 for the 7420, newer tech, longer support from right now.
Question: What chipset is the mb7621 utilizing? intel or broadcom or other
Answer: Model MB7621 and all Motorola modems utilize the Broadcom modem chipset.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does it say 4x ethernet ports in your description where there is only one
Answer: Because Amazon hasn't corrected their product subscription. I submitted one two weeks ago and has yet to be done. If you need more than 1 ethernet port, then this one is not for you. This has only (1) 2.5 Multi-Gig port.
Question: Does netgear cm500-1aznas work with tds provider
Answer: Yes. But you need to call the TDS customer service and provide your CMAC or SN to register your device. These numbers are on the box and the unit
Question: Can you use a phone to ethernet splitter for voice to work
Answer: I have never heard of a phone to internet splitter, at least not expressed in those terms. However, for VOIP (which means Voice Over Internet Protocall), you must have at least one phone jack in a modem, or a modem-router combination. Some modems have two such jacks, which could provide two different "lines." Most importantly, you must have your internet service provider's PERMISSION to install and use such a modem, or modem-router combination! My own ISP (Wow, aka Wowway.com) REFUSED to give such permission because that would cut into their profits, since they would no longer receive a monthly FEE to RENT their age-old junk, much of which are at least five years old, which is like a millenia in this day of super-fast-paced electronic offerings. I had to send back every VOIP-capable modem I bought from Amazon and other places because my ISP REFUSED to enable them to work with their so-called service(s). Talk about anti-competitive business practices ... U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are you paying any attention?
Question: I understand that this modem says it will only work with xfinity. but has anyone tried this with spectrum? (aka time warner cable
Answer: Hello. I am writing this Dec 2, 2020 and just activated this modem 2 days ago with Spectrum. It is not on the list of approved modems, but oddly enough the CM400 is. I just told the tech support who activated it that it was compatible and it's worked fine with no problems. I went from 100-120 mbs on my 100 mb plan to 250 to 450 mbs, still on the 100 mb plan. This modem is not on the list of approved models but it seems to work fine so far without periodic latency/drops like the Arris model from Spectrum had.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this modem have five portholes and does it take my comcast phone
Answer: Yes
Question: does this modem have a time warner cable phone port
Answer: The switch will not respond to snmp query. It only has a packet counters on its web management page.
Question: Is this modem an upgrade to 5341J? What is the difference between them
Answer: This switch is unmanaged and most likely won't function the way you're going to want. There may be some uplift if you can configure LAGG in the Synology software and let the NAS handle it. I would recommend going to a 2.5gb nic, if capable and just run it to one of the 2.5gb ports on the switch.

User questions & answers

Question: How warm does this modem run? Some of the more recent SB modems ran too hot, leading to early failure
Answer: Handling of heat was definitely considered in the MB7420 design. All cable modems generate heat, the good designs get rid of the heat efficiently. The MB7420 is very well ventilated on both sides and on the top, and has robust heat sinks on the circuit board to dissipate the heat. The vertical design also helps air circulation. The two year warranty is the longest in the industry and speaks to the durability of the product. With that said, definitely do not operate the MB7420 on its side. The MB7420 is intended to be in a vertical position.
Question: Are the leds insanely bright like on other motorola modems
Answer: Whether the LEDs have the right amount of brightness is an opinion. The MB7420 LED brightness was reduced in response to user reviews on earlier modem designs. Definitely attention was paid to the output level and the electronic design throttled back the brightness. You will probably find it a good, but can't say for sure. Your opinion would be welcome.
Question: Can the stabilizing foot be removed so the modem can lay on its side? Is it screwed/clipped on
Answer: The foot is attached with 2 screws under the label. It is designed to stand up on the foot to allow for adequate cooling for the modem at high speeds. It is not designed to lay flat on its side with one panel blocked. It is recommended that both side panels and the top not be blocked. Laying it on its side and blocking the ventilation could produce improper operation and unit failure.
Question: Is this part of the arris motorola surfboard line up of modems
Answer: No, it is not. This is a much newer design. The MB7420 has a Full Band Capture Digital Tuner, upgraded power handling to protect against lightning and power surges, robust heat sinks to handle a broad temperature range. And the MB7420 looks a lot better than the Arris SB6141.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it compatible with Mac Sierra
Answer: The power light is obviously indicating the modem is getting AC power. It should light up solid gren. The DSL light indicates the status of connection with the ISP's DSL equipment. It should also be solid green. It will flash green as the training or synch process is underway. The flashing green will speed up as the training process completes. Solid green is normal, solid red indicates no connection to the ISP's DSL equipment. The internet globe determines the authentication of the modem to the ISP's network. A properly authenticated modem will show the globe green and will flash according to the amount of data flow. An amber or red globe indicates an authentication problem. Typically the PPP user name or password is incorrect. If the globe does not light up at all then the DSL is probably incorrectly wired at the ISP's facility. Power and DSL will light up if the modem is connected to any port at the ISP's equipment. However the globe won't light up if the wiring to an unassigned port or a port that hasn't been properly provisioned. Lights 1 thru 4 are Ethernet port activity lights. They light up and flash with data flow anytime and Ethernet cable is plugged into the yellow ports on the back of the modem. In some computers the motherboard isn't always "hot" so shutting down the computer will turn out the corresponding port light on the modem. The wireless light indicates the wireless broadcasting is turned on. This light will flash anytime there is data flow. The WPS light indicates the wireless broadcast is using Wi Fi Protected Security. This can be disabled in the modem interface accessible via a browser page address of 192.168.0.1
Question: Have you corrected the issue of use with mac os sierra
Answer: All the WPS button is doing is Enabling security for your modem. That way your connection wont be open for just anyone close to your home can jump on and use. It will not Effect your ROKU OR COMPUTER. Only thing it may do after pressing the WPS button is make you 1 time on each device type in the default password or Pin, which All that info is on the bottom of your Modem. I have had to have 5 diff Modem/routers replaced by Centurylink! They either stop working fully on their own, or lighting seems to only hit the modem, even though its on a surge protector that cost a bunch cause if the electricity goes out the type of surge protector I have keeps juice going to everything plugged into it for about 2hrs depending on what all is on and running. But I have I think 6 other devices plugged to my surge protector and non of the others ever r hurt only the POS Centurylink Modem blows. Anyway sorry to get off track, U 100% need to have your security enabled in the first place! An thats just what WPS is.= WIFI PROTECTED SETUP.
Question: How long is the cord that comes with it
Answer: You can use any Modem/router as long as its ADSL OR ADSL2. I would Recommend getting the ' TP-LINK TD-W8980 N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ (Non-Cable) Modem Router, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5Ghz 300Mbps, 2 USB Ports for File Sharing, IPv6 Compatible' Its 2.4ghz and 5Ghz(Dunno if you need that or not but its a better brand than ANY of the modems CenturyLink Offers! I have been with them since 2014 And have had to have 5 replacement modems sent!! They just stop working, start acting nuts, or with the least little bit of lighting seems to always hit it and blow, even though I have it connected to a surge protector along with a PS4,BASIC TALK,TV, PHONE BASE and nothing else has ever been fried but that damn CenturyLink ZXEL PK5001Z has blown 3 times. I have even had a Tech that had to come out and work on a speed issue and told me their equipment is Garbage and Its def best to find a diff brand than the ones by CL. Only upside about if you do use a CL modem/router combo, is your only gonna pay 100bucks for the modem is you buy it, but luckly I was renting the modems I had when they stopped working or were hit by lighting, so Free brand new replacement. I just bought the TP LINK modem a month ago and its 100000% better. Only other Modem I would suggest that is decent from CL is the ' C1100T Technicolor Modem' or ' Technicolor C2000T Modem'
Question: Apple's fax modem doesn't work on new 64-bit iMacs. Does this one
Answer: I don't believe so, if I understand the question correctly. It only operates on a 2.4 GHz frequency. Following is a link to the product page on the Zyxel website so you can confirm. http://www.zyxel.com/us/en/products_services/pk5001z.shtml?t=p

User questions & answers

Question: I want to buy this latest model mg7700 asap, when is gonna available
Answer: Not sure about the answer to your question. The MG7700 is very popular at the moment and all you can do is keep monitoring availability.
Question: What is the range of this modem? I'm looking for a strong signal throughout a 4,000 sq ft home
Answer: Model MG7700 should provide coverage to a large house. Unfortunately, because of so many variables involved, there isn't a way to measure the range (or speed) experience a user will have. Factors, including positioning of the Gateway, building materials, obstruction or even your neighbors WiFi usage, play a role in what will both range and speed. That said, model MG7700 is equipped with a sophisticated built in Dual Band AC 1900 WiFi router. Support for concurrent 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with AnyBeam beamforming at those bands, focuses the signal on wireless clients to allow further improvements to wireless performance, including range. Model MG7700's built in WiFi router will increase your chances for a better WiFi experience over other Gateways on the market.
Question: Do you have to pay for extended phone tech support in the event it stops working
Answer: Motorola has a pretty decent 2 year warranty, with good phone support even through this Novel Corona-virus causing many companies to lessen customer support. This is a solid modem that saves me $185 every year with Comcast. It's interesting as I had Comcast service 12 years ago and back then one could own their own modem to save you $15, but they would charge you the same $15 for the access card a month. I went back to Comcast as Frontier is at deaths door. These days Comcast doesn't charge for the access card as the FCC put the kibosh on cable companies being in the cable rental business. At the end of the day, this Motorola's paid for itself twice over and still counting.
Question: Are you able to install firmware updates? When I owned a combo modem+router, Cox locked out firmware updates because it was a cable modem
Answer: No, you can't personally update the firmware, apparently, the cable company gets it from Motorola, and updates it for you. I guess for compatibility or maybe some other reason.

Motorola MB8600 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem, 6 Gbps Max Speed. Approved for Comcast Xfinity Gigabit, Cox Gigablast, and More, Black

No cable modem is compatible with fiber optic, DSL, or satellite services, available from Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, Frontier, and others.)
  • Flexible Compatibility - Pair with any Wi-Fi router you’d like, including Whole Home Wi-Fi or Mesh routers like eero, Google Wi-Fi, and Orbi. This cable modem does not have a built-in wireless router or telephone call capability.
  • Proactive Network Security - A broadcom chipset provides advanced security from denial-of service attacks.
  • Active Queue Management (AQM) - AQM significantly reduces Internet latency on both DOCSIS 3.1 and 3.0 services, resulting in faster page loads for all Web traffic and enhanced interactive applications like online gaming and video conferencing. User questions & answers

Question: Confirming that only one device can be connected to the modem, despite additional lan ports? you can't connect, say your pc and a router at same time
Answer: The MB8600 will allow for one device. You can connect your PC to the MB8600, or connect a router to the MB8600.If, in the very unusual situation, you are paying for and receiving more than one IP address from your provider, then you can directly connect up to 4 devices to the MB8600.
Question: I also need wifi, what do you recommend
Answer: The MB8600 modem will work with any WiFi router. Given the speed of the MB8600, you should be using at least an AC1900 router and given the other devices in your network, you might be able to take advantage of a wireless speed even faster than AC1900.The Ethernet port on the MB8600 simply plugs into the WiFi router of your choice. The router should be current enough to have a Gigabit WAN port (10/100/1000 Ethernet port), since you will need that for the speeds that the MB8600 can deliver. And for now, 1 Gbps service is the fastest cable service Comcast is providing in the US. When Comcast or other cable Internet service providers begin providing service speeds over 1Gbps, the MB8600 has the bonded Ethernet ports which will allow the MB8600 to deliver speeds above 1 Gbps. We are not aware of a consumer-home/small office router that does Ethernet port bonding today, but they are coming. Ethernet port bonding is available on Enterprise level routers (routers used in large organizations), but we can't recommend that class of product for a consumer at this point. They are more complicated than you need and more expensive. Bonded Ethernet ports for consumers will appear by the time Comcast is ready to begin delivering speeds above 1Gbps and the MB8600 will be ready to deliver those speeds. In summary: Use at least an AC1900 wireless router Be sure the router you choose has a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port.
Question: Does this use the now-notorious Intel Puma 6 chipset
Answer: Model MB8600 and all Motorola products use Broadcom chipsets and do not have the problem associated with the Puma 6 chipset.
Question: Do all four Ethernet ports on this modem output the same amount of bandwidth or are there only certain ports that operate at maximum capacity
Answer: The reason for four ports on a modem requires some explanation. It is important to understand the MB8600 does not do routing. The MB8600 is a modem only. A router can be connected to any of the MB8600 GigE ports. The link between the router and the modem is then capable of using the full rate of the one Gbps service Comcast currently can provide with their new DOCSIS 3.1 service. In the future, Comcast and other cable services are expected to offer services faster than on 1 Gbps. When those faster services are offered, the additional ports in the MB8600 will be needed. Ports 1 and 2 can be bonded to allow up to 2 Gbps to be delivered by the MB8600. The other two ports on the MB8600 are there to allow additional port bonding for speeds over 2 Gbps. When Comcast has service speeds over 1 Gbps, the router connected to the MB8600 also needs to do port bonding to take advantage of the port bonding in the MB8600. Routers used by consumers today do not support port bonding. Some routers used in corporate networks do support port bonding. In the future, routers used in homes and small businesses will be sold that support port bonding so they can take advantage of future service speeds that will be faster than 1Gbps. In summary, the four ports on the MB8600 are there to allow the MB8600 to deliver service speeds above 1 Gbps WHEN THOSE SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE. That is good design. Think twice before you buy a modem that pretends to offer speeds above 1Gbps and does not have multiple ports that can be bonded. You can not get a speed above 1 Gbps unless you have a way to get the fast speed out of the modem. The MB8600 is designed to allow speeds above 1 Gbps to be delivered to a router with bonded GigE ports. Other modems are not as well designed.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference between this modem, the SB6183, and the SB
Answer: The SB6180 enables channel bonding of up to 8 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels, which allows an operator to offer their customers advanced multimedia services with data rates of well over 300 Mbps in DOCSIS mode and 400 Mbps in EuroDOCSIS mode for downstream and 120 Mbps upstream. The SB6183 has 16 download & 4 upload channels. Download speeds up to 686 Mbps and upload speeds up to 131 Mbps based on your Cable provider service. That is the main difference I could find. I hope it helps.
Question: do most users need such a fast cable modem? I have comcast performance....is this over kill or futureproofing with docis 3.1 on horizaen
Answer: DOCSIS 3.1 is here, true. And the first set of cable modems using the standard will offer some improvements. As with many technologies, they don't saturate the market overnight. In most cases the availability and maturity of a technology in the marketplace can take years - as much as 3 to 5 years. Even if 15 to 20 percent of the market goes to DOCSIS 3.1 in the first or second year, that says 80 percent hasn't. Future proofing your technology is nice, but a measure of sensibility should be used too. I went to the ARRIS SB6183 knowing that my ISP service is 200 Mbps. It allows a considerable cushion for growth. If my ISP's average speeds jumped to 500 Mbps, and I were to consider another cable modem upgrade, I would focus on a faster cable modem that uses the DOCSIS 3.1 standard or any newer and more powerful standard - allowing me to benefit from the latest standards and speeds. The DOCSIS 3.0 standard may well be nearing its End-of-Life in 2 to 3 years. Therefore, I would see no value going to a 1.4 Gbps DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
Question: Does ARRIS/Motorola support firmware upgrades for the 6183 via downloads to the consumer's computer
Answer: The Cable Operators (MSOs) have complete control of what cable modem/gateway hardware they will allow installed and the firmware it uses, on their cable plant. This means anything directly connected to the cable plant (COAX) in your house. They do this to ensure that nothing happens to anyone upstream from your connections. Cable Operators follow the DOCSIS Specifications that control this methodology of firmware upgrades as well as providing security for the firmware upgrades. Cable Operators also run both the products and firmware through their own test cycles to approve any manufacturers' modems, wireless gateways, and the associated firmware updates for deployment. This is not an ARRIS only implementation, but the required implementation of any cable device manufacturer. After an MSO has tested and approved a new version of firmware for a cable device, they will then "push" that new firmware out to the devices. So upgrades to the modem firmware will be made automatically but you cannot download them to your computer and perform the upgrade yourself.
Question: I purchased this item almost 8 weeks ago 8 August 2014 will i receive this item in my lifetime or will i need to leave this item in my will for my kid
Answer: Purchased SB6183 a week ago, My invoice says estimated shipping between Oct 1 to 10th. What was your estimate date? If i don't see any update by Oct5th i'm going to cancel my order and stick with SB6141.

User questions & answers

Question: is this compatable with belkin routers
Answer: Yes.
Question: Doe it work with Century link
Answer: This modem is for use with Cable Internet, not DSL. If CenturyLink offers cable internet in your area, it should work. I know this modem works with Suddenlink cable.
Question: Will this modem work with Time Warner triple play internet and their telephone service
Answer: In my area, currently, if you have Time Warner 'triple play' (TV, Internet, phone) and you have your own supported modem, TW provides the same modem they would for triple play and uses that for phone service only - at no monthly equipment charge - and disables their modems Internet connection/ wifi. So you do need that TW modem in addition to this unit and a cable box for TW triple play, but your only equipment fee if you have your own modem is for the cable box / DVR. I am using this modem and a TW modem with a high bandwidth splitter and good, short coax patch cables (or you can use different cable wall outlets for phone and Internet if you prefer) with TW triple play, and am not charged any monthly rental fee for Internet or phone hardware. Contact your TW representative and confirm their policy for your area (may take more than one call to get a representative who can give you the official answer).
Question: Will this modem work with at&t uverse ??? if not which modem will
Answer: No it definitely will not. AT&T Uverse uses modems that have an RJ-11 connector in the back (phone cord plug). This is COAX, and is only used for Cable Internet providers. What you need to look for is a 2Wire or other common Uverse modems. Hope this helps. If you call AT&T they can also give you a list of compatible modems for the services offered in your area.

Answer: It works really well with my new time capsule! Details on time capsule here: http://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
Question: Is this compatible with Time-Warner cable and will this work with Google Voice? Can i use the Netgear 7550 for its router
Answer: I live in Queens New York, and I have this modem for a few months with time warner cable . I got 100 Mbps with no issues using the Asus Wireless Router .That's what I paid for, I don't know if we the modem can take the 200 or 300 Mbps. It will work with Google voice
Question: Any advice on the steps to set it up? Is the serial number necessary? (I am having Comcast
Answer: I have Comcast and the SN is necessary to get it setup (call them). Mine had the SN blacked out so I had to plug it into a computer, then use a browser to see the SN by logging into the admin screen (192.168.0.1)
Question: will this work with comcast (xfinity) hi speed internet & vonage home phone? thanks
Answer: I bought it specifically to replace the comcast supplied modem after I terminated my landline. It is supposed to work with comcast hi speed internet, but it performed poorly. I returned it and replaced it with the equivalent Motorola model which has been far superior in performance (cost about $20-30 more.) I suspect that this model works better with satelite, but this is merely speculation. I would not recommend it.
