11 best wireless cable modems
Wireless cable modems, also known as modem-router combos or gateway devices, are all-in-one networking devices that combine the functions of a traditional cable modem and a wireless router. These devices are used to connect to an internet service provider (ISP) using a cable connection, such as coaxial cable, and then distribute that internet connection wirelessly within a home or office.
Key features and aspects of wireless cable modems include:
Modem Functionality: The cable modem part of the device connects to the ISP's network through the coaxial cable. It demodulates the incoming signal, allowing your computer or network to access the internet.
Router Functionality: In addition to modem capabilities, the device also functions as a wireless router. It manages the local network within your premises, enabling multiple devices to connect to the internet wirelessly (via Wi-Fi) or through wired connections (via Ethernet ports).
Wireless Connectivity: Wireless cable modems provide Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing various devices like laptops, smartphones, tablets, and smart home devices to connect to the internet without needing physical cables.
Ethernet Ports: These devices typically have multiple Ethernet ports, allowing users to connect wired devices directly for a more stable and faster internet connection.
Dual-Band or Tri-Band Support: Many modern wireless cable modems support dual-band or tri-band Wi-Fi, providing multiple Wi-Fi networks operating on different frequencies (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). This helps in reducing congestion and optimizing performance.
Security Features: Wireless cable modems often come with built-in security features such as firewalls, encryption, and parental controls to enhance network security and control access.
Setup and Configuration: Setting up a wireless cable modem typically involves connecting the device to the cable outlet, configuring the modem with your ISP's credentials, and configuring the Wi-Fi settings for your home network.
Compatibility: It's important to ensure that the wireless cable modem is compatible with your specific ISP. Different ISPs may have different supported devices and specifications.
Wireless cable modems offer convenience by integrating the functions of a modem and a router into a single device. They are a popular choice for residential users and small businesses, providing a simple and streamlined solution for setting up an internet connection and a local network.

User questions & answers
Question: | How is this model different than the arris surfboard sb |
Answer: | The sb6121 only has speeds of 172 Mbps download and up to 131 Mbps upload. This model has up to 343 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload. |
Question: | Going with the cable modem option what’s the best router to pair this with for spectrum |
Answer: | It depends on your needs. Needs are based on the number of devices connected and the size of area you are trying to cover. I would highly recommend a mesh network unless your home is 1200sqft or smaller. A centrally located router could cover that. The biggest problem is getting the 5ghz frequency to reach throughout the home. The 5ghz gives you speeds over 30mbps on wireless devices. 5ghz will reach roughly 40ft in all directions from your access point (ap). A mesh system gives you multiple ap and thus more area covered by the 5ghz. |
Question: | How many devices can connect at once? Is that that the 8x refers to |
Answer: | The 8x doesn't refer to the number of devices you can connect to it. You only want to connect one device and that's your WiFi router. You wireless router determines how many devices can be connect based on the available number of ip addresses on the wireless device. The 8x refers to the speed of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Its informing you on the speed of DOCSIS 2.0 vs the newer DOCSIS 3.0. Ultimately your speed will be determined by how much you want to pay your internet provider. And you can determine how many devices you want to connect by the router you choose. |
Question: | Do I also have to buy a router for the modem? And to make sure it obviously speeds up internet connection right |
Answer: | If you only need to have one computer hooked up to the internet you do not need a router. If you want to hook up more than one computer or if you want a wireless network, you will need to buy the appropriate router. My internet speed went from 20mb to 100mb(the speed I pay extra for). TWC has also stopped charging me $8.00 a month for the use of their inadequate equipment. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can i track individual device' data usage? i bought it for this reason but i dont see that option in the app or webpage |
Answer: | You can, you have to log into the 192.168.1.1 and sign in. It is under WiFi usage. |
Question: | How do we set this up to use instead of the Comcast modem rental? The Comcast customer service rep said he doesn't believe it's compatible |
Answer: | You will need the MAC address for the device ready to go before you call your cable provider. After you plug it in and hook it up to your internet feed from your provider and power it on, call their help desk and tell them you have a new cable modem and need this device (MAC) it to be set up under your account. You provide them the MAC address and they should be able to see your device on their network. Once they get it set up, you can connect your WIFI router to the cable modem and they should be able to see the WIFI router connected to your new cable modem. Enjoy saving $ by not renting a cable modem from the provider. |
Question: | if i already have a modem installed, would i just have to unplug that modem and plug this one in to work or would i have to contact my ISP |
Answer: | It is a simple swap, however you do have to contact your ISP to activate it. It's actually one of the easiest things to do with my cable company and you might actually be able to do it online from a smartphone via the ISP's website. |
Question: | Can this router handle gigabyte internet service |
Answer: | No. NO. Nooooooooooo! I will try to submit a picture with speed trials but in short- it is a complete lie and false advertising to state openly or even imply that this can handle 1 Gig speeds. Directly connected with a 6ft Ethernet cable I cap out at around 576 Mbps (roughly half of a Gig service) but when I swap to Wifi it drops by an order of magnitude to ~ 50 Mbps or 1/20th of a Gig service. Xfinity technicians came out 3 separate times and verified that we are getting 1 Gig speeds but I was told that you need DOCSIS 3.1 to handle 1 Gig service. Really regretting paying so much for this junk. It looks sharp, I will say that but for two people trying to teach via Zoom this device can't handle it. Loses connection and/or poor service DAILY! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this item Wireless |
Answer: | My advise, buy a solution,, 7.0 and a 4.01.., it does come with a storage solution which is a one time use. If you plan on using your ph meter every week or more your gonna want the solution. It's best to know your ph is on point all the time especially for certain plants.. you can get away with just one solution (7.0), I personal like to use to calibration solutions cause it gives you 2 different readings, that way you know your pen is on point,, some future advise, use 2 shot glasses and pour each cali solution in each,, that way to much isnt wasted in a cup, also if you put plastic wrap or something to top the shot glasses you can use that same solution for up to a month, that way your not constantly pouring new solution in your shot glasses everyday or week. They say you only calibrate once a month, thats false, you calibrate it when it needs it, I have this same pen and its ok, but I have to calibrate it every 2 weeks and I use it twice a week. Thats why its good to have those shot glasses on standby so you dont have to pour and waste more. Oh and when you put in shot glass just make sure it fills up enough to cover the whole rod which should be right above the slit (the opening to the right of the circle shape hole) which is like the halfway mark between the HM logo and bottom. All in all good luck and enjoy |
Question: | Can i use this with spectrum wifi |
Answer: | If the PH range you're looking for is between 0 and 14 it will work. Just make sure you rinse off the probe with distilled water before and after each use and that the cap has enough storage solution in it after each use. |
Question: | Is this a modem/router combo |
Answer: | First thing I suggest is make sure you have a gallon of distilled water and purchase some small, plastic, testing cups. You can find them on Amazon. Distilled water is important for rinsing, the cups are so you don't dip into the testing solution and contaminate your supply. Pour some in the cups you get to test. This can be tricky so you might not get it right the first couple of tries- rinse the tip with distilled water, use clean paper towel to dab off, I wave it around to get excess out. with it on dip into the 7.0 testing solution and wait for it to read 7.0. Then press the power/calibration button and hold for 2 seconds until you see cal flash, when you release the M will be on the screen. I pressed and released too soon, or double clicked it, and that killed the power and did not save the calibration. two seconds is not long so you just have to work with it. After testing with one solution, rinse, dry, go to low or high but do the same process. You should have all your stuff lined up ready to go and just flow through the process. The solution will be marked with what the pH reading should be. |

Question: | Does this modem have netgear genie |
Answer: | Hello Thank you for contacting us. It has Netgear Genie App Management. Any questions please contact us again. Thanks. |
Question: | I see many ppl asking about a router and answers say “modem only” but the description says wifi modem combo. what am i missing |
Answer: | The confusion is due to the illogical way Amazon links questions and answers to products. There are several different products listed on this one product page. Some are just modems, others are modem/router combos. Unfortunately, all the different products on this page share the same questions and answers which aren't relevant to one another. If the description on the product you have selected says it's a modem/router combo, then it's a modem/router combo. The people saying it's only a router are answering the question based on the product their viewing or have purchased. This is a problem that effects many products throughout the Amazon site. |
