It is in the up position (12 o'clock) for normal operation. rotates the lock to the correct combination and push the black button to open the lock. While holding the button down, turn the screw slot to the three o'clock position. I don't remember turn it clock wise or counter clock wise. After turning the screw, rotate the combination to the new number and then rotate the screw back to 12 o'clock. release the button and rotate the tumblers. The new number should be set then.
