Answer:	No, it is just heavy nylon. If it were ballistic it would probably be lighter weight. I haven't had problem with falling apart that the other person answering did, and I've used this one and the one I had before which lasted 6 years in international travel and daily office forays.

Answer:	There are basically six pickets. Two of them are just large pockets with no internal compartments or separators. Assuming you pack your clothes there, you can probably packs 2 days clothing or 1 change and a light outerwear. If you are some sort of travel jedi, you could probably pack a bit more. This is a rather heavy backpack, so don't buy this as a clothes carrier, buy it for its laptop TSA pocket, heavy duty construction and decent carrying capacity.

Answer:	I don't know if they are machine washable, I usually spot clean them or wash it in the sink. More gentle than a washer. These are great backpacks and can handle a lot of roughy and tumble wear and tear. Hope it helps.

If the student is capable and wants to carry more (and wants more different pockets), the High Sierra Loop backpack has a larger capacity while still being fine for a high school student.I purchased both for different aged students and they seem to be pretty good so far.
