    User questions & answers

Question: Am I able to set the permissions so people can read and write data but not delete anything
Answer: Contrary to HIS answer I got my Linkstation of to work with Windows 10. When it comes out of the box the SMB option is in the OFF position. You have to go to Advanced then File Sharing. The SMB setting is there. I switched it on. After that mapping network drives and running backups to the NAS went without error.
Question: Does it support IP cameras like the synology surveillance station? If no, which other models do
Answer: Don’t buy buffalo, I’ve had two crash and lost most of my data. It does support cameras but I will never buy anything from buffalo. I have a Synology that also supports cameras and has run flawlessly.
Question: Can i backup/upload photos from my iphone? if yes, then does it store the photo in same format(eg.: heic) with exif metadata & same size as in iphone
Answer: Yes, you can backup/upload your iPhone photos with our WebAccess-I app. It does not alter the files in any way.
Question: standard drives" does not sound like a nas (iron wolf) rated 24x7 duty drive. if "standard" desktop model drive, can they be upgraded to nas spec
Answer: Yes, the Buffalo LinkStations use what I would call common home computer drives. Yes, you can replace those drives with any similar size SATA drives. But, I see no need as I have five Buffalos running 24/7 on my network, the oldest purchased in 2009, the newest in 2018. I have had no failures - zero. If you configure the Buffalo to RAID 1 you have no problem even if a drive dies as they are hot-swap and the system does automatic restore on insertion of a new drive.

    User questions & answers

Question: What is the selection of raid i want so i have 4 cloned drives of my information
Answer: If you have 4 drives, RAID 1 will clone the data to all 4 drives.
Question: Do the drives spin down when not in use
Answer: It has a variable sleep option. It does slow down initial response time if they need to spin up before use.
Question: This may be a naive question but
Answer: I've used the in-house and it's quite acceptable. I believe you can set it up via remote but you'll have to deal with all the firewall settings, etc. I've got remote access to my server so it's easier to open a browser from there than mess with security settings.
Question: Can I use different size drives together in this device or do they all have to be the same size? I'm not concerned about using a RAID setup
Answer: If you elect to use Seagate's SimplyRAID (or JBOD, which gives you no data protection), you can use any size drives. If you elect to use RAID 1, 5, 6, or 10, then you'll either need same-sized drives, or you'll end up wasting space on the larger drives, since the array will only be as big as your smallest drive.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can this accept a pci-e 10gb spf+ nic card
Answer: Yes , Chelsio cards are the best option. However check if there is good support in FreeBSD for your card.
Question: What is the usable capacity of this system
Answer: depends of what do you choose i belive i get like 37 tb of usage with zfs4
Question: What specific drives come in the 50tb version
Answer: on mine came western digital red sata 6g/s the 2 ssd are unbranded cant tell may be special ones that are used in this kind of envirome t?
Question: what is the purpose of the 2 2.5 bays
Answer: They are for 2.5" drives (ie, laptop standard), rather than 3.5" drives (ie, desktop standard). You can use them however you'd like...I use them for doing R/W caching via SSD's, so I don't have to spend 10-100x to get full SSD speeds, when the network being used to move data to/from the server will be the speed limiting factor most of the time anyway.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can I connect a usb cable to this drive to access what's stored on it via computer or tv? or can you only access stuff through a network connection
Answer: if you really want to access via USB, just get a harddrive docking station. They are so much cheaper then networked attached storage anyway, less electronics to fail...just better all the way around unless you are dealing with someone who can't cope with connecting and disconnecting stuff, it's far better. You can sway in and out many drives and store them...
Question: questions: does it by default appear in windows 10 pro file manager? can the contents be encrypted? can i directly copy to the drive via usb
Answer: This is a network attached storage device. In order to use this with Windows 10 you'll need to map it as a network drive. Yes, the contents can be encrypted. No, it's not a USB device, it's a network device.
Question: does this support time machine
Answer: Yes, all Buffalo NAS support time machine.
Question: Anyone use this successfully as a Plex media server
Answer: To clarify, this can absolutely be used as storage for the media you host on a plex server but you will need to run the plex server on another device. Kind of Similar to DC Mike's setup; I have a an old AMD PC that hosts my plex server (Athlon x2 4400+, 8gb DDR2, and Radeon HD 6870 *can't remember if video card helps with plex decoding at all, but it's there anyway and has no other use to me) I do have a couple TB worth of media on HDDs in that box but the majority of my data is on similar NAS devices like this buffalo Linkstation. Literally any USB external or NAS drive can host media for a Plex server with extremely little chance of limited performance. The limiting factor in Plex performance comes with the capability of the computer hosting the server to decode and encode media to play on the device you're trying to stream to (for instance, accessing your plex server from another pc takes much fewer resources than on your ipad would require because the server pc has to reencode the media to a format that iOS can utilize) and, in the case of remote streaming, your internet connection. The 10+ year old pc I described can stream multiple 1080p video remotely with no visible lag and I've tried as much as 7 local network 1080p streams and had not issue there.tl;dr - This can host all of your music, video, pictures for a plex server to access but not run the plex server itself.

    User questions & answers

Question: Can attached devices be read as network drives directly on a computer without a proprietary app?.(windows 10 e.g
Answer: Yes, that is exactly how it operates. Mounts to your computer without needing to physically attach it to your computer.
Question: Will kwilt3 work like a nas for playing video files on my fire tv using kodi? can i see the drive as a network drive
Answer: It sounds like you're asking if it transcodes the video files (like a dedicated SOHO/Pro NAS). If that's what you're asking then the answer is an emphatic "no". You'll be able to play the files, but you are going to be downloading the entire file, not a scaled down version for your device (if the file is a 4K video that's 10 GB, the entire 10 GB will be streamed to your device). Transcoding (especially on the fly) is something that requires a fair amount of processing power and RAM to accomplish. There's just no way to include that kind of hardware at this price point. If you want to use your bandwidth efficiently, buy a dedicated NAS. If you're the only one utilizing said bandwidth, this should work for you.
Question: Is kwilt depend' to any 1 file system: fat32, ntfs or mac extnd'd journl'd? w both win and macos in use, r there any issu w using 3r party software
Answer: All Kwilt products support ExFat, MS-DOS (FAT), FAT32, NTFS, HFS+. It is all dependend on how the 3rd party software connects/operates. Kwilt is meant to be mapped to your local network and any drive you plug in will become a Network Attached Storage device. The Kwilt device does not have its own built-in storage or provide cloud server storage.
Question: So for the “unlimited” storage, it’s not unlimited right? Just depends on how much storage u have for hardrive
Answer: The device itself has no storage. You provide the storage, so yes it is unlimited except to the extent you purchase storage. Use your brain.

    User questions & answers

Question: How noisy are these? Would it be a good choice for quiet high-performance workstation
Answer: I've had two of these WD Gold (2TB) HDD's installed in separate computers, both purchased together in 2016, both are very quiet when compared to the high performance (SATA-2) Caviar Black. Until that point, had been running mostly WD RE4 (SATA-2) drives for data, in a couple of PC's, for OS also. Mainly because I could get these at low cost, often new pulls from servers for $50 or less (500GB to 1TB). Did buy a couple of used ones less, these also held up well. None has died. Yet back to the point & WD Gold, it's as good of a data/desktop drive as it gets. 128MB cache on all models which upgrades to 256MB around 4GB & larger, it beats the current gen WD Black hands down. While the WD Gold does have features for RAID usage, if used as a single desktop drive (or paired with SSD for data, how I use my pair), the performance is nothing less than Outstanding. If one has their PC plugged into a UPS emergency power (highly recommended), for best performance, go into Device Manager & find the drive, under Policies, check 'Turn off Windows write caching buffer flushing for this device' (or similar wording). As far as noise goes, unless in the rare event that the WD Gold has gone bad, look elsewhere, maybe a fan. Mine are installed using the rubber bushings provided with my heavily sound insulated Fractal Design case. If one doesn't have these bushings or grommets, can be found in a bulk back at most any local hardware store. Just carry the screw intended for installing, can match with one that fits the screw well. Ideally one which has a groove in the middle to place in the mounting hole, may have to wet to slide into place (I use saliva, works great!). This absorbs any vibration & also helps to protect the WD Gold or any HDD. BTW, these drives are rated for 550TB writes per year, a factor in my purchase decision. I have zero regrets as to purchasing the WD Gold, only $5 more & 2x the cache versus the same sized WD Black. In summary, I cannot recommend the WD Gold enough to anyone who wants a long lasting, quality HDD.
Question: Can this hdd be used as a desktop drive for hp z240 machine
Answer: Well, according to WD ADVANCED Technical support, they do not guarantee the drive will work correctly in a desktop. I had one that would cause the HD activity light to stay on intermittently and I had to reboot the computer when it happened to clear the issue. Keep in mind I ran a WD 4TB Gold for 21 days without the LED activity light issue but encountered this problem with the NEW replacement drive. Needless to say I do not own a 4TB Gold drive any longer. I gave up after getting 3 drives with 3 different problems. Oh, my system has been running fine with a known good WD Black 1TB in it so no it was not my computer causing any of the issues.
Question: Any significant difference between the gold drives and the red nas drives
Answer: Reds are usually 5400 RPM and perhaps lower power consumption with the idea of several drives being in the same NAS bay. Reds are also usually 3 year warranty with 1 million hours MTBF. Golds are 7200 RPM, 5 year warranty, 2.5 million hours MTBF.
Question: Can you open the hard drive
Answer: You can if you desire to convert your hard drive into a paper weight. But there far less expensive paperweights you can get.

    User questions & answers

Question: Is there a way to transfer all my Plex metadata in Windows to the F2-221 and how
Answer: 1. You may use Samba to transfer the metadata to the NAS first, and then SSD to the back end of the NAS, and put the metadata to the Plex directory in the NAS. 2. You may use scp that available in Windows PowerShell to transfer the metadata to the Plex directory in the NAS. Please feel free to contact the support team via [email protected] if any problems.
Question: Does the f2-221 include an hdmi port? the product picture shows that it has one, but i couldn't find any mention of it in the descriptions. thanks
Answer: Yes, it has an HDMI port but it's for showing the codes for developers who may log in the background of the NAS to run commands. The HDMI port is not for displaying videos.
Question: Do drives need to be the same size
Answer: If the drives will be created as a RAID mode, it's suggested to use the drives in the same brand and size. The WD red hard drives and the Seagate IronWolf hard drives are recommended. If you use these drives as individual ones, you may use drives in different sizes.
Question: Can this device be used as a backup destination for files and system images from my wireless win10 laptops using the win10 file history feature
Answer: Yes, it supports. 1. You will need to map the shared folders in the NAS as a network drive to your Window 10 PC; 2. it Windows Key + Q to bring up the search. 3. Type in "backup". 4. Choose Backup settings. 5. Select More options. 6. Choose See advanced settings. 7. Select Add network location. 8. Choose a folder on the network drive. 9. Choose Select folder. 10. Hit OK.
