Question:	what if the NAS device fails? Can you remove the drives and put in another device to recover data or are they hardware layer encrypted
Answer:	Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected!

Answer:	2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration.

Answer:	Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-)

Answer:	I am going to buy the 4 bay version. If I can stream from Plex using 2 old Lenovo IX4-300D's than I am sure the ARMADA 388 1.6ghz chip will be fine for steaming from Plex. The Lenovo only has a 1.2ghz chip and ARMADA XP chip in it.

Answer:	Technically you can but not recommended. You will likely get terrible performance because the CPU and memory is not designed for this use case. 512MB RAM is very low for a datastore. This model is really geared towards traditional file sharing and media streaming. You want something with higher CPU and read/wrtie caching like the DS218/DS218+.

Answer:	The DSM software come with a number of features to prevent malicious attacks. One of my units was hit with a ransomware attack. Nothing import on the unit as it was used for security camera video storage. I believe I was hit with what is called man in the middle hack. My credentials were taken when I periodically logged in to view the camera images. I was not taking the security seriously. Now I have turned on HTTPS and 2FA (two factor authentication). Point is that the features are there to secure you NAS but you have to make use of them. Hope this helps.

Answer:	manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. Answer:	I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache.

Answer:	In the 8 bay area i have 8 3.5 hdd (5) 10tb (1) 8tb (1) 6tb (1) 4 tb, the avg temp stays around 34-35 c. I replaced (1) 5.25 drive bay with icy dock 4 x 2.5 ssd and the other 5.25 drive bay with startec 5.25 trayless hot swap rack. The system is for unraid server with several vm's run 24/7, file sharing , plex along with docker containers etc. The only time i have seen any temps above 40c was on the 8tb drive when doing parity check and then never near the manufacturing max of the drive. Note that I did replace the fans with Noctual fans, i did this based on some of the articles i had read about air flow not being the best in this case.

Answer:	This is normal. I did extensive research on why this happens as I was very concerned as well. It turns out that this is normal for the head to be reading and writing. I have mine for over 2 years and no problems. I have since gotten 3 more of these drives.

If you buy the 6 TB version today, that may not be what’s inside. I routinely run a full surface scan of new hard drives with StableBit Scanner. With external drives like the G-Drive I arrange a pair of 120mm fans above and below the case with the top fan blowing on a heat sink bigger than the fan to keep the drive cool during the scan which can last many hours. After 2 hours of scanning, The G-Drive’s aluminum shell was cool to the touch, but StableBit Scanner reported the drive’s temperature at 123.8 degrees F. After the scan completed successfully, the drives idle temperature fell to 114.8 degrees F. Two other 6TB USB 3 drives (both WDs in well ventilated plastic cases) ran at 91.2 and 93.2F respectively during scans. Curious as to why the G-Drive ran so hot, I opened up the case. Inside the thick aluminum shell, the hard drive itself is held in an un-vented, thick plastic 'boat' that wraps around all but the top side. The seeming vents on the front panel are fake and blocked off by the plastic boat. There is a dead air space between the top of the drive and the aluminum outer shell. The drive is held in the plastic boat by flexible tabs with rubber shock bushings. If you buy a G-Drive that comes in this housing, you are paying extra for style, but not for function.
