User questions & answers
Question: | Can this support raid 10 with four ssds (happened to have four samsung 1tbs evos |
Answer: | No idea. Mine failed and I could get no response from them or the extended warranty I bought on Amazon. Totally useless. |
Question: | Does the tvs-x72xt series support 64gb (32gb x 2) memory |
Answer: | Yes. It's a bit of overkill as it's designed to run 24/7/365 along with other drives that will vibrate at their own frequencies. A desktop drive can be purchased for a lower price. |
Question: | What are the largest capacity drives this system will accept |
Answer: | Short answer: No Seagate Ironwolf Pro HDD's do not support the obsolete AAM protocols. They have rotational vibration sensors and dampers which make the drive quiet. Long answer: Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) was a feature popularized by WD in which the spin up rate of the disks in a HDD was slowed down to reduce vibration and noise. This feature was declared obsolete in the 2010 ATA protocols because it made the drive spin up slowly and increased access times. Seagate Ironwolf Pro NAS drives are made to run 24/7/365 @ 7200 rpm. These drives spin up as quickly as any HDD that I ever tried including 15,000 rpm drives. They are not "green drives" which spin down and back up to conserve energy. The drives have rotational vibration sensors and self correct for drive eccentricities. The result is that the Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro HDD's are very quiet. I have WD Reds, HGST's, and Toshiba drives along with Seagate Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro 4TB, 6TB, 8TB, 10TB and 12 TB drives. The Seagate Ironwolf and Ironwolf Pro drives are the quietest drives of all the drives I own. Note: I am not employed by Seagate. I do not have any financial interest in the company. I am not paid to endorse Seagate drives nor have I ever been given Seagate drives for free to evaluate and write positive reviews. My opinions and statements are based on experiences with drives I paid for and use in my own equipment. |
Question: | can this device support 4x 16tb hdds and 2x 2tb nvme ssds |
Answer: | This will require active adapters for monitors 3 and up. So, the first two will run with direct HDMI lines, but any more will need adapters. |
Question: | I had to replace a seagate st3000m001 in my synology ds212j, will the seagate 4 tb ironwolf pro work |
Answer: | This product will require a full form factor system, an sff system will not be large enough to house it. For all other inquiries please do contact us at [email protected] or by phone at (866)883-5411 |
Question: | This has failed after 4 months of use, how do I go about getting it replaced under warranty |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Can this NAS drive be used as a desktop drive |
Answer: | Not if the DDR5 version is available. I purchased mine during the crypto mining craze. It was Ok for that but the DDR5 version has 8x better shader performance and performs twice as well in most DX11+ games |
Question: | Does the ironwolf line suppor automatic acoustic managment |
Answer: | Yep it is |

User questions & answers
Question: | How can I obtain a replacement rackmount rail kit? We moved our data center, and left part of the rails behind - where can I purchase just the rails |
Answer: | The TVS-x72xt says in the documentation a max of 32GB. Maybe the other user got it to work anyway or read it wrong? I can only confirm 32gb. |
Question: | will i be able to install Plex |
Answer: | Hi D. Verdin, Currently, the largest hard drives compatible are 16TB. You can see all compatible hard drives here: https://www.qnap.com/en-us/compatibility/?model=357&category=1 Thanks! |
Question: | about the ram Can be increased? And to what extent |
Answer: | Hi Satisfiedcustomer, Yes, it does support those drives. Thanks! |
Question: | Can this unit be used with active directory for folder permissions |
Answer: | It should work fine. My recommendation were to change the other drives as well - assuming you have more than one drive in there. In case you are running a prior existing drive in a raid 1 configuration and are replacing a failed mirror drive you wont be able to use the full drive size. As i said before I recommend using same drive type with preferably same firmware across all drives in a Nas unit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is my 10tb drive saying it only has 8.73 tb of useable space? it should be roughly 9.3 tb |
Answer: | Yes I have this issue as well. When running a raid it will set up to A safe cache to a largers size due to all the drives. How many drives are you using? Check out the Manufacturer website. This is how I found why I was getting this as well. I'm running 5 drives in a Z2 config. |
Question: | What's the difference between st10000vn0008 and st10000vnz008/n |
Answer: | don't know... looks like someone had ambiguous or conflicting information |
Question: | Will it work for a MacBook Pro |
Answer: | I am not sure. These drives (RED label)work for NAS devices for a specific need. They good for video; photos and music storage. They are a bit more expensive. I honestly do not know why you want them for a macbook. Since you have the cash, buy an SSD drive instead. |
Question: | Why are the prices constantly changing |
Answer: | Stock and Demand for Materials change the price. |

Question: | How do you replace a drive in a raid 1 configuration, and ensure that it mirrors the data on the good drive |
Answer: | I don't have the 960GB version, but 480GB instead, but my answer should help you anyway. As any other manufacturer, Seagate uses gigabytes (i.e. 10^9) for the capacity, while most OS use gibibytes (i.e. 2^30). My NAS recognizes the 480GB model as 447.13GiB, which is exactly as expected. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what if the NAS device fails? Can you remove the drives and put in another device to recover data or are they hardware layer encrypted |
Answer: | Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected! |
Question: | Is the 8tb option include 1 drive at 8tbs or 2-4tb hdds |
Answer: | 2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration. |
Question: | Im assuming any advertised capacity would be half using raid |
Answer: | Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-) |
Question: | Has anyone used this nas with plex |
Answer: | I am going to buy the 4 bay version. If I can stream from Plex using 2 old Lenovo IX4-300D's than I am sure the ARMADA 388 1.6ghz chip will be fine for steaming from Plex. The Lenovo only has a 1.2ghz chip and ARMADA XP chip in it. |
