User questions & answers
Question: | Am I able to set the permissions so people can read and write data but not delete anything |
Answer: | Contrary to HIS answer I got my Linkstation of to work with Windows 10. When it comes out of the box the SMB option is in the OFF position. You have to go to Advanced then File Sharing. The SMB setting is there. I switched it on. After that mapping network drives and running backups to the NAS went without error. |
Question: | Does it support IP cameras like the synology surveillance station? If no, which other models do |
Answer: | Don’t buy buffalo, I’ve had two crash and lost most of my data. It does support cameras but I will never buy anything from buffalo. I have a Synology that also supports cameras and has run flawlessly. |
Question: | Can i backup/upload photos from my iphone? if yes, then does it store the photo in same format(eg.: heic) with exif metadata & same size as in iphone |
Answer: | Yes, you can backup/upload your iPhone photos with our WebAccess-I app. It does not alter the files in any way. |
Question: | standard drives" does not sound like a nas (iron wolf) rated 24x7 duty drive. if "standard" desktop model drive, can they be upgraded to nas spec |
Answer: | Yes, the Buffalo LinkStations use what I would call common home computer drives. Yes, you can replace those drives with any similar size SATA drives. But, I see no need as I have five Buffalos running 24/7 on my network, the oldest purchased in 2009, the newest in 2018. I have had no failures - zero. If you configure the Buffalo to RAID 1 you have no problem even if a drive dies as they are hot-swap and the system does automatic restore on insertion of a new drive. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I connect a usb cable to this drive to access what's stored on it via computer or tv? or can you only access stuff through a network connection |
Answer: | if you really want to access via USB, just get a harddrive docking station. They are so much cheaper then networked attached storage anyway, less electronics to fail...just better all the way around unless you are dealing with someone who can't cope with connecting and disconnecting stuff, it's far better. You can sway in and out many drives and store them... |
Question: | questions: does it by default appear in windows 10 pro file manager? can the contents be encrypted? can i directly copy to the drive via usb |
Answer: | This is a network attached storage device. In order to use this with Windows 10 you'll need to map it as a network drive. Yes, the contents can be encrypted. No, it's not a USB device, it's a network device. |
Question: | does this support time machine |
Answer: | Yes, all Buffalo NAS support time machine. |
Question: | Anyone use this successfully as a Plex media server |
Answer: | To clarify, this can absolutely be used as storage for the media you host on a plex server but you will need to run the plex server on another device. Kind of Similar to DC Mike's setup; I have a an old AMD PC that hosts my plex server (Athlon x2 4400+, 8gb DDR2, and Radeon HD 6870 *can't remember if video card helps with plex decoding at all, but it's there anyway and has no other use to me) I do have a couple TB worth of media on HDDs in that box but the majority of my data is on similar NAS devices like this buffalo Linkstation. Literally any USB external or NAS drive can host media for a Plex server with extremely little chance of limited performance. The limiting factor in Plex performance comes with the capability of the computer hosting the server to decode and encode media to play on the device you're trying to stream to (for instance, accessing your plex server from another pc takes much fewer resources than on your ipad would require because the server pc has to reencode the media to a format that iOS can utilize) and, in the case of remote streaming, your internet connection. The 10+ year old pc I described can stream multiple 1080p video remotely with no visible lag and I've tried as much as 7 local network 1080p streams and had not issue there.tl;dr - This can host all of your music, video, pictures for a plex server to access but not run the plex server itself. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it normal the Drive noise (sounds like raining on an window AC) when accessing the drive heavy. I deleted 70,000 files of 111 gig of test data |
Answer: | The DriveStation Duo comes set up in RAID 1. Under heavy access, the drive will make noise since it is deleting from both of its HDDs att he same time. |
Question: | I have a wd my book and i wish to use the drives (wd nas reds 3tb) in a drivestation, but i hear that wd encripts there drives, what to do |
Answer: | We are not sure about the encryption, but it is unlikely that the RAID would function across both units anyway. |
Question: | Does this product have 2 4-TB drives or 2 2-TB drives |
Answer: | Capacity for 2 drives. Each 4 TB. Can be configured mirrored for capacity of 4 TB or a single partition across drives fro 8 TB.Mirrored means if one drive fails you don't loose any data. |
Question: | I understand the drives are formated in Unix, if the box craps, will Windows10 directly read the drives or is all lost |
Answer: | If a drive fails, easy to drop in a new one. If hardware fails, I would suggest searching buffalo's support site for user experiences with that. Data recovery of individual drives is not easy if I recall. I have owned 4 over more than decade, only had one drive failure. Recommend their products |

User questions & answers
Question: | what if the NAS device fails? Can you remove the drives and put in another device to recover data or are they hardware layer encrypted |
Answer: | Yes. A long story short, my WD My Cloud Mirror suffered a "blown out" ethernet port due to a lightening strike. I purchased the EX2 Ultra (diskless) and placed my old WD Red drives, that were in the My Cloud Mirror, and it worked flawlessly. It didn't skip a beat. I was up and running like nothing happened. I was so relieved that the content on the drives were unaffected! |
Question: | Is the 8tb option include 1 drive at 8tbs or 2-4tb hdds |
Answer: | 2 4TB drives wich can then be run in a raid configuration. |
Question: | Im assuming any advertised capacity would be half using raid |
Answer: | Well, this is an old question, so nobody will see my glorious contribution; but here goes anyway! In order to use RAID 1, the two drives in use for that must be of the same size. They should be identical --- well nearly so. But, if one of the drives is slower than the other, the slower drive controls the speed (obviously). Two 6 TB drives in RAID 1, however, does not give you exactly 6 TB. There is a small part of the discs that gets assigned overhead duty to keep track of the status of the mirroring and to manage the mirroring. You could assume a high percentage --- maybe even more than 99%. I can't find any real figures for it, but since a 6 TB drive doesn't hold 6 TB anyway, you might just assume something like 5.98 TB for two nominal 6 TB drives in RAID 1. Keep in mind that RAID isn't free!! Not only is the capacity of the RAID array less than the combined capacity of the drives, there is also a performance hit because everything has to be written more than once and depending on which RAID (n) you choose, it may be split across several drives. Another consideration which I had not previously considered is the age of the drives. If you start with two identical drives, four years from now each of those drives will have been in service for, guess what, four years. If one of them fails, the other may not be long behind. Some folks (what we usually refer to as "THEY") would suggest a mix of drive ages. Your mileage may vary, as "they" say. :-) |
Question: | Has anyone used this nas with plex |
Answer: | I am going to buy the 4 bay version. If I can stream from Plex using 2 old Lenovo IX4-300D's than I am sure the ARMADA 388 1.6ghz chip will be fine for steaming from Plex. The Lenovo only has a 1.2ghz chip and ARMADA XP chip in it. |
