10 best solid state hard drive

A Solid State Drive (SSD) is a type of data storage device used in computers and electronic devices. Unlike traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs), which use spinning magnetic disks to store data, SSDs use NAND flash memory to store data electronically. Here are some key points about SSDs:

  1. Performance: SSDs are known for their superior performance compared to HDDs. They offer faster read and write speeds, which means quicker boot times, faster application launches, and improved overall system responsiveness.

  2. Durability: SSDs have no moving parts, which makes them more durable and less prone to mechanical failure. This also makes them more resistant to physical shocks and vibrations.

  3. Reliability: SSDs typically have a longer lifespan compared to HDDs. They can endure a higher number of read and write cycles, reducing the likelihood of data corruption or loss.

  4. Energy Efficiency: SSDs consume less power compared to HDDs, leading to longer battery life in laptops and lower energy costs in desktop computers.

  5. Form Factors: SSDs come in various form factors, including 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch, and M.2, making them suitable for different types of devices, from laptops to desktops to ultrabooks.

  6. Capacity: SSDs are available in a range of storage capacities, from small sizes (e.g., 128GB) to large capacities (e.g., 4TB or more). The choice of capacity depends on your storage needs.

  7. Price: SSDs used to be more expensive per gigabyte compared to HDDs, but prices have been steadily decreasing. They are now more affordable and offer better value for their performance and reliability.

  8. Data Transfer Interfaces: SSDs use different data transfer interfaces, such as SATA, NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express), and PCIe, each offering varying levels of performance. NVMe and PCIe-based SSDs are faster than SATA-based SSDs.

  9. Wear-Leveling: To prolong the lifespan of NAND flash memory, SSDs employ wear-leveling algorithms that evenly distribute write and erase cycles across the storage cells.

  10. Trim Support: Modern SSDs often support the TRIM command, which helps maintain performance over time by marking data blocks as no longer in use.

  11. Data Security: Some SSDs come with hardware encryption features, adding an extra layer of security to your data.

  12. Gaming and Multimedia: SSDs are popular among gamers and multimedia professionals because of their quick load times for games and large media files.

  13. External SSDs: In addition to internal SSDs, there are external SSDs that connect via USB or Thunderbolt, providing fast and portable storage solutions.

Overall, SSDs have become the preferred choice for data storage due to their speed, durability, and reliability. They are used in a wide range of devices, from personal computers to data centers, and have significantly improved the computing experience for users.

User questions & answers

Question: What am i missing, when i plug it in, nothing happens - my computer doesn't show it at all. do i need to download something
Answer: I have two of these and am about to get a third. No, you don't need to download anything (at least on windows and linux computers). I reformat mine to NTFS because I switch between OS's. One thing to note the usb "A" adapter is "notched" and will only fit on one way completely, you probably got a bad one, it happens, send it back if no luck.
Question: Can I use this to backup my PC AND also save files from my macbook? Id like to save files from both on one HD?!?! (2012 macbook & HP Desktop
Answer: Basically, my home setup is an all-Mac setup. What I did immediately after I got it out of the box was to format it and partition it 200 GB HFS+ and 800 GB APFS. The HFS+ partition is used for Time Machine, and the APFS partition has four volumes (capacity is allocated dynamically between volumes within the APFS partition). How I would use this in a mixed environment: one HFS+ partition for Time Machine (you can't use APFS partitions for Time Machine); one APFS partition for the files that will be used only with a Mac; and one ExFAT partition for instances where you need to be able to access the file in Windows and on a Mac. Also, make sure you keep that USB-C to USB-A connector that comes with the drive; it comes with about a 6-inch cable with USB-C connectors at both ends.
Question: Is this drive good for running an OS from
Answer: YES! I have 2 that I use for this, be aware you may have to change your system setup to use, On mine I have to change SATA controller mode to AHCI from RAID and UEFI to Legacy support and boot priority to Legacy first (Lenovo). Once you have those setting fixed you will be amazed how fast it will run. I run fedora on a 1TB for storage and Fedora Securrity Spin on a 500 GB drive to use to recover data and fix customers machines. I have also run CentOS and Linux Mint with no issues.
Question: Can you please tell me if this storage is in Solid state or is it a spinning disc? Thank you
Answer: The name of this item is: "Sandisk Portable SSD (SOLID STATE Drive)"......... That clearly means it's NOT SOLID STATE. No they're/I am just joking. In all serious-ness though: it is indeed a "Solid State drive" with no moving/spinning disks.

User questions & answers

Question: My pc has a i7 8700k with 16 gigs of ram with a nvidia 2080 graphics card and already has one of these 1 tb ssd in it. Cab I install 1 more
Answer: Almost certainly yes: you may need to purchase a cable to connect it to the sata port on the motherboard, and go into the bios to update the settings and ensure your primary drive remains the boot drive
Question: Does this come with free cloning software
Answer: I think so (on their website), but you seriously shouldn't be purchasing any WD Green storage options anyway. Sequential write speeds on them are famously low. I just got a new Samsung 970 Evo drive and it's literally 10x faster than this Green SSD.
Question: What's the difference between this an a wd blue ssd? furthermore, would this be ideal as a boot drive on a desktop pc
Answer: Performance and longevity, the Blue is faster than the green and has a higher endurance rating (lasts longer). WD Green is essentially the economy line, which tends to also use less power, thus being an ECO line. I wouldn't recommend the green line unless web-browsing and office is the extent of your computer usage. The Blue has 5 times the endurance rating, 400TBW vs 80TBW, which is enough of a difference alone, for me.
Question: What's the difference between this an a wd blue ssd? furthermore, would this be ideal as a boot drive on a desktop pc
Answer: All the negatives of a WD green HDD, brought to you in SSD form! But you are saving $11 ☹️

I will leave you a PDF below that will go into more detail of these limitations. MX500 Warranty: http://www.crucial.com/wcsstore/CrucialSAS/pdf/product-flyer/crucial-mx500-ssd-productflyer-en.pdf
Question: Will this drive work with a mid 2012 macbook pro? I haven't seen this model addressed yet. Thanks
Answer: Yes. I just installed this drive in my son's mid-2012 13" Macbook Pro (non-retina) and the speed difference is amazing! I would recommend first updating your operating system to Mac OS X High Sierra which also updates the recovery partition on your Mac. When you install your new drive, hold down Option-Command R when powering on to boot into the recovery partition which will then allow you format and install the OS. If you happen to see a message that the Recovery server is not available, you probably just need to set the Macbook clock to the correct time with the command: date mmddhhmmyy. For example: date 0128140018 will set the date to January 28, 2pm, 2018. The date is set through the Terminal app, also available on the Recovery partition.
Question: Does it include the 7mm to 9.5mm adapter
Answer: Hello, Thank you for contacting Crucial. Yes, every new purchase of the MX500 will come with the 7mm to 9.5mm spacer. You will also receive a download link for free cloning software, as well as a link for online instructions to copy all of your data from your old drive, and move it over to the new one. User questions & answers

Question: Clone software available or not? desc "ssd dashboard and cloning software download (4) " would like to clone my c drive to it
Answer: The Acronis WD Edition (a special eidtioin of Acronis Backup) did not work for me as it did not see the SanDisk drive on the USB dongle. I ended up using the full version of EaseUS Todo Backup but the free version of it would do the job as well. Both are Windows solutions but with Todo Backup you should be able to create the bootable CD/DVD on a WIndows machine then use it on anything else that will let you boot. Clonezilla is a Linux based solution that I've also used before but it's not as intuitive. You burn an ISO image to a CD/DVD or a USB stick (different version for the latter) and boot to it and follow the instructions. You create a bootable CD or DVD with Todo Backup after the Windows installation and boot to it (you may need to change your boot options in BIOS to be able to do that) with the SanDisk plugged into the USB. Choose the source drives (there's a small partition ahead of the drive C partition that you need to check), and any other partitions you created, then continue and choose the destination drive, the SanDisk. Choose "optimize for SSD" and then proceed and wait a long time (a few hours). The remaining time left indicator, like it is with many of these backup programs, will tel yo there's only 5 or 10 minutes left in the copy operation when it will take a few hours. I left mine go overnight and it was finished in the morning but in my experience, it would have taken only a few hours (I just didn't check until morning). You can continue to use the Todo Backup CD/DVD you created to back up your PC/laptop to an external hard drive for regular backup. The full (paid) version allows you to restore incremental backups so I feel it's worth the money, but if you always only make a full backup, the free one will do nothing more for you.
Question: Is this compatible and does it fit a late 2011 macbook pro to replace the sata disk hard drive
Answer: Yes. The "Unibody" MacBook Pro models are compatible with a 2.5-inch (notebook) SATA drive at as much as 9.5mm thick. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/macbook-pro-unibody-faq/macbook-pro-13-15-17-mid-2009-how-to-upgrade-hard-drive-ssd.html This Sandisk SSD is the 7mm form factor, however, I don't think it's significant because Apple uses the screw heads to hold the drive in place. You can view the installation (instructions) for free at OWC https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/ -- the "Early 2011" revision is identical in procedure to your "Late 2011"
Question: Does it come with the required sata cable
Answer: I have MANY SSD's in MANY older laptops and in MANY 2.5" USB drive cases, and have never had to worry about a SATA cable. For laptops and such USB cases, you just slide the drive as is, into the SATA interface pins -- it only will go one way, and you're done. If you're going to install this 2.5" form factor drive into a desktop or tower machine, you should get a kit to do so. It should come with proper adapters and the needed SATA cable for THAT specific application. I have never, ever, seen such a drive come with a SATA cable, as in the vast majority of cases, it simply isn't needed. My laptops span the 2008 to 2014 manufactured date range.
Question: Mlc or tlc? thanks
Answer: The old models (those with MLC), the "G25" in its name and the new TLC-based devices instead called "G26". https://pcpartpicker.com/forums/topic/214469-sandisk-ssd-plus-120gb240gb-models-with-the-model-number-ending-in-g26-have-different-nand-flash-quick-rant

Question: My computer has a usb 3.1 port, will that be compatible with thunderbolt
Answer: No. Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 are different formats. And if you got an adapter, you would create a bottleneck effect on its performance and end up causing slow access and transfer speeds
Question: Can the hard drive be replaced easily (opening the enclosure) in case it fails
Answer: That depends on what you are referring to. Its usually not difficult to install a new Hdd, Though that depends on your ability to work with Tech. That being said, if the drive fails, it would be replaced, not opened. So, in summery, installing new drive, not difficult. Opening the drive... not possible for most. And not advisable as the chances of success are nearly nil. Good luck
Question: What is the rpm
Answer: From the description: "Ideal for consoles, gaming laptops and mini PCs, FireCuda SATA SSHD hard drives feature SSD performance and HDD capacities. Enjoy 7200 RPM speeds" I doubt they'd include the part about consoles, gaming laptops and mini pcs if this was for the 3.5 version.

User questions & answers

Question: So, how fast is this actually, in comparison to an average SSD
Answer: If you’re using it on a PC, a regular SSD will pretty much always be noticeably faster. On consoles a this will give about the same load times on games once you’ve loaded the game a few times(due to the consoles not being able to fully take advantage of a SSD’s speed), in order for the drive to store frequently accessed files onto the flash part of the drive.
Question: mb or 64mb cache
Answer: According to the datasheet, this new drive has 256MB of Cache
Question: What’s the difference between this “newer model” and st2000lx
Answer: Doesn't seem that there is much of a difference except a "refresh" of the tech.
Question: Will this work in a PS
Answer: I put this into my PS4. When loading missions and such in Destiny 2 I have been loaded in about 10-15 seconds faster than my friends since installing. The drive went bad after 1 year and was replaced under warranty.
