14 best solid state drives

Solid State Drives (SSDs) are a type of data storage device commonly used in computers and electronic devices. They have gained widespread popularity due to their speed, durability, and reliability. Here's what you should know about SSDs:

  1. Technology: Unlike traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) that use spinning disks to store data, SSDs are based on NAND flash memory technology. This technology allows data to be stored in memory cells, which are not only faster but also more durable because there are no moving parts.

  2. Speed: SSDs are significantly faster than HDDs. They offer faster data access, faster boot times, and quicker application loading. This speed advantage makes SSDs an excellent choice for improving the overall performance of a computer.

  3. Durability: SSDs are less susceptible to physical damage than HDDs because they lack moving components. This means they are less likely to fail due to shocks or drops.

  4. Reliability: SSDs are known for their reliability and data retention capabilities. They are less prone to data corruption and do not suffer from bad sectors, a common issue in HDDs.

  5. Storage Capacities: SSDs are available in various storage capacities, ranging from smaller drives suitable for laptops and tablets to larger drives suitable for desktop computers and data centers. Capacities can range from a few hundred gigabytes (GB) to multiple terabytes (TB).

  6. Form Factors: SSDs come in different physical sizes and form factors to fit various devices. The most common form factors include 2.5-inch drives (similar to laptop HDDs), M.2 drives (smaller and commonly used in laptops and desktops), and U.2 drives (larger and often used in enterprise settings).

  7. Interface: SSDs connect to a computer's motherboard via various interfaces, including SATA (older and slower), PCIe (faster and more common in modern systems), and NVMe (a protocol that uses the PCIe interface for even faster speeds).

  8. Use Cases: SSDs are used in a wide range of applications, including as primary storage in laptops and desktops, as cache drives in servers, and as high-performance storage in gaming consoles. They are also used in data centers and cloud computing environments due to their speed and reliability.

  9. Cost: While SSDs offer many advantages, they are generally more expensive per gigabyte compared to HDDs. However, SSD prices have been decreasing over time, making them more affordable for consumers and businesses.

  10. Maintenance: SSDs typically require minimal maintenance compared to HDDs. They do not need defragmentation, which is a common task for HDDs, and they have a longer lifespan.

In summary, Solid State Drives (SSDs) are a type of data storage device that offers faster performance, durability, and reliability compared to traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). They come in various capacities, form factors, and interfaces, making them suitable for a wide range of applications in computers and electronic devices.

User questions & answers

Question: What am i missing, when i plug it in, nothing happens - my computer doesn't show it at all. do i need to download something
Answer: I have two of these and am about to get a third. No, you don't need to download anything (at least on windows and linux computers). I reformat mine to NTFS because I switch between OS's. One thing to note the usb "A" adapter is "notched" and will only fit on one way completely, you probably got a bad one, it happens, send it back if no luck.
Question: Can I use this to backup my PC AND also save files from my macbook? Id like to save files from both on one HD?!?! (2012 macbook & HP Desktop
Answer: Basically, my home setup is an all-Mac setup. What I did immediately after I got it out of the box was to format it and partition it 200 GB HFS+ and 800 GB APFS. The HFS+ partition is used for Time Machine, and the APFS partition has four volumes (capacity is allocated dynamically between volumes within the APFS partition). How I would use this in a mixed environment: one HFS+ partition for Time Machine (you can't use APFS partitions for Time Machine); one APFS partition for the files that will be used only with a Mac; and one ExFAT partition for instances where you need to be able to access the file in Windows and on a Mac. Also, make sure you keep that USB-C to USB-A connector that comes with the drive; it comes with about a 6-inch cable with USB-C connectors at both ends.
Question: Is this drive good for running an OS from
Answer: YES! I have 2 that I use for this, be aware you may have to change your system setup to use, On mine I have to change SATA controller mode to AHCI from RAID and UEFI to Legacy support and boot priority to Legacy first (Lenovo). Once you have those setting fixed you will be amazed how fast it will run. I run fedora on a 1TB for storage and Fedora Securrity Spin on a 500 GB drive to use to recover data and fix customers machines. I have also run CentOS and Linux Mint with no issues.
Question: Can you please tell me if this storage is in Solid state or is it a spinning disc? Thank you
Answer: The name of this item is: "Sandisk Portable SSD (SOLID STATE Drive)"......... That clearly means it's NOT SOLID STATE. No they're/I am just joking. In all serious-ness though: it is indeed a "Solid State drive" with no moving/spinning disks.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this one have the option of Transferring files or photos from phone directly onto drive or is computer needed
Answer: You should be able to access it thru the files app on an iPad or an iPhone as long as you have the correct cable. My iPad Pro will work great with it.
Question: The posted dimensions do not seem correct when looking at user photos (4.34 inches x 2.24 inches x 1.68 inches). Is it really 1.68" high
Answer: No - correct dimensions are 4.345" x 2.254" x 0.45" (just measured with my calipers) No clue how anyone could come up with 1.68 inches high. It's pretty small and faster than anything I've ever used.
Question: Can I transfer smaller files
Answer: Yes; you can think of 500GB as the drive's capacity (although the operation system will use up a tiny fraction of that total). You can use is just like any other hard drive. The only real difference is that it has no moving parts and the transfer rate is FAST!
Question: Can this be used to provide cctv video storage (constantly reading/writing............forever
Answer: No; nothing is forever. Solid state disks have a maximum number of writes, referred to as TBW (terrabytes written) which are typically 65 to 150 TBW. SanDisk estimates about 65-80 TBW depending on device. Putting this in perspective, TBW stands for Terabytes Written. It can also be referred to as “endurance”. It is a metric indicated by hardware manufactures to state how many terabytes could be written to the solid state disk (SSD) during it’s lifetime. The TBW metric is an important one to look out for when buying an SSD as it indicates how long a drive can be operational and useful before needing to replace it with a new one. For example, if your drive has a capacity of 100 GB's, and the drive was rated at 100 TBW, then this means that the drive can be fully rewritten 1024 times! (1 Terabyte = 1024 Gigabytes). Reading is forever, but writing is the limit... Solution: plan to replace the SSD when you approach the capacity metric for TBW... use the "old" drive as a read only archive. I used to do this for databases - put the data which is static on the SSD's for fast access and the dynamic data on the hard drives. The TBW rates are constantly improving and someday may be infinite, but we're definitely not at that point.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you format this and why is that necessary for new drives? What stops me from plugging it right into my system and getting started
Answer: Depends on what you're doing. You can connect this to your system but new drives will not be functional until you initialize them and create a partition under Disk Management. Your other option (what I did with this drive) is to disconnect your existing drive and then install this (while PC is off if that's not obvious). Then you have a blank drive in your system and can boot from an OS disc like Windows 10. A fresh Windows 10 installation will still recognize the drive and be able to initialize it properly as well as create the necessary partitions. Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
Question: Hi i have questions how the better samsung evo 970 or wd black 250gb high-performance nvme pcie gen3 8 gb/s m
Answer: Reviews have suggested that the two drives are VERY close in performance (nearly within margin of error of tests). The WD Black gen3 devices were the first ones to actually challenge the 960 EVO NVMe drives for dominance of the high-performance consumer grade SSDs. You can't go wrong with either one, as far as I can tell, at least from reviews. They'll provide insignificant differences in speed/performance between the two. Therefore, you should purchase based on price and (if it's important to you) warranty. Note also that the WD drive caps at 1TB in size (vs. 2 TB for the 970 EVO), so if you wanted to go that route, there's only one choice. As far as "best high-performance consumer level" NVMe drive, the 970 EVO and the 3rd generation WD black are on an even playing field, and both at the top of the stack (this ignores the "prosumer" market devices like the 970 Pro where prices are much higher per gigabyte). Note that it's possible that you won't notice any performance difference between these high-performance NVMe drives and, say, a high-quality SATA drive.
Question: I want the 2 TB, is it possible
Answer: If you find someone with TB, you can have as much of it as you want!
Question: Whats the difference between this one and the 960 pro
Answer: The 960 Pro is from the previous generation. The newer one is the 970 Pro. Comparing the 960 Pro to the newer 970 EVO is a bit difficult because they aren't in the same class. The Primary difference between the Pro and the EVO is the Pro uses MLC (Multi Level Cell) whereas the EVO uses a Triple Level Cell. Case and point with the EVO. You can get a 2tb EVO drive but the Pro tops out at 1tb. The silicon is able to get more storage space for the real estate with TLC. On the other hand MLC is more reliable and more hearty than TLC which is why the Pro is using the MLC. Maybe you want to know about write endurance. One thing to keep in mind about write endurance is you will probably never come close to hitting it's limits unless you are using the drive all the time to save and load large files like a professional would. Also, the write endurance of the 1tb 970 Pro is double the write endurance of the 512gb 970 Pro. hardware review sites and done tests of the actual write cycle longevity of these drives and these drives last longer than what they're rated for. More than likely in your case, these drives will be long obsolete by the time they're half worn out. The write endurance of the 500gb 970 EVO is 300TB write cycles. Sequential R/W of the 970 EVO is 3400MB/s read and 2300MB/s write. I believe the 970 evo uses a Single Level Cell cache to boost write speeds. The write endurance of the 512gb 960 Pro is 400TB/wc. Sequential R/W of the 960 Pro is 3500MB/s read and 2100MB/s write The 970 series is more refined. Both use the updated Phoenix controller whereas the 960 series uses the Polaris controller. Both the 960 Pro and 970 EVO have a 5 year warranty. The older 960 EVO only has a 3 year warranty. The answer to this question between the 960 Pro and 970 Evo is simple........... get whichever is cheaper.

User questions & answers

Question: I just bought i want to use with an imac and a pc should i plug it in when i get it to imac first and if i do can i drag pc files to it after
Answer: I would do a clean format of it on the imac first, you can choose exFAT (it will work on both PC and mac) or you can choose Mac OS Extended (HFS+) which is more stable than exFAT, but you will need software on your PC to read/write to the drive. If the PC is your main machine I would just choose exFAT.
Question: How long is the usb cable
Answer: Measured at 16 inches.
Question: Should the cable go in smoothly, or does it kind of snap in and need some pull to come out? Just got mine and wondering if that is normal
Answer: The first one I got the cable did not fit well and Samsung replaced the drive. The second one has been fine
Question: If i use this drive on my 2012 imac with usb 3.0, will the transfer speeds be less than 540mb/s
Answer: Your iMac has USB 3.0 which is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1. That has about half the theoretical maximum transfer rate of USB 3.1 Gen 2, which is the interface used by this drive. On the upside, it is still fully compatible with USB 3.0/3.1 Gen 1 and while the transfer rate you’ll experience will be lower than if you had a computer with Gen 2 USB, it really isn’t that much slower in actual use. If you’re moving from any spinning platter drive to an SSD regardless of the interface you were using with the platter drive, you will see a HUGE performance improvement using this external SSD drive.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the endurance rating for this drive? (pny cs900 480gb ) in dwpd or tbw (if you don't know the number, please don't answer
Answer: You would have to read/write over 300 terabytes, yes TERABYTES, for the ssd to fail. Unless of course you get a bad drive from the start.
Question: will this work with dell Optiplex 790 minitower pc
Answer: If your computer has a free 2.5" hard drive bay and can accept SATA II or greater hard drives this should work.
Question: my laptop only has one slot for an ssd how exactly would I go about cloning my OS onto this new ssd using the included cloning software
Answer: With the SSD you do get a free OEM version of Acronis True Image(available for Windows only, for Mac you can use Time Machine) to clone the SSD with. You would need to have means of connecting the SSD or hard drive to the laptop such as a SATA to USB adapter or USB SATA dock. The best method would be to Download and install Acronis. Once Acronis is installed and activated, get a USB flash drive(at least 2GB in capacity) and use that to create a rescue media drive (instructions on how to do that can be found here, https://kb.acronis.com/content/60820 ). Once the rescue media drive is created, install the new SSD into the laptop and have the original drive connected externally then boot the laptop from the rescue media drive and the clone process will start.
Question: Mlc or tlc
Answer: MLC is no longer used in cheap consumer SSD. In a few years TLC won't be either as it will be mostly QLC. Most people want cheap $/GB, not 50-100+ years expected lifetime when 5-10 is more than enough.

User questions & answers

Question: Clone software available or not? desc "ssd dashboard and cloning software download (4) " would like to clone my c drive to it
Answer: Yes. It should work just fine in any laptop that accepts 2.5" SATA drives. For MacBook Pros, that means machines through the mid-2012 model. Don't forget to move your Torx screws over to the new drive!
Question: Is this compatible and does it fit a late 2011 macbook pro to replace the sata disk hard drive
Answer: Yes you can download the Samsung Magic Data Transfer software that will transfer ALL the data including the operating system. . A 250 will work fine for only 100gigs of data. If it was me I would get the 500GB drive because it will hold so much data you can always transfer the drive to your next computer. My belief is it's better to have to much than not enough. I currently own the 1 TB Evo and the 1 TB Pro both Samsung. If you are on a budget go with the 250. Good Luck! If you have the cash go long term you are bound to gather more data!
Question: Does it come with the required sata cable
Answer: Yes windows 10 is supported I just added this to a new Acer Laptop that has Windows 10 Home. It did not come with a disk for any software. You will need to go to their website and get the Data Migration software and load that to clone the drive. Also get the SAMSUNG MAGICIAN software, that will optimize the drive with a number of settings and let you know about firmware updates for the drive. https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/
Question: Mlc or tlc? thanks
Answer: I used the “Apricorn Notebook Drive Upgrade Kit”. It is available on Amazon under: “Apricorn SATA Wire Notebook Hard Drive Upgrade Kit with USB 3.0 Connection ASW-USB3-25 (Grey)”. Even though it says note book upgrade kit, it works for a PC as well. I used it to upgrade my Laptop and my desktop. I like it because it comes with the cable and the cloning software to make a copy of your current hard Drive. All you have to do is connect your SATA SSD drive to the Apricorn cable, and plug it in to your USB port (use USB 3.0 port if you have it), then run the cloning software on the CD it comes with. The software will ask for the source drive (which is the drive you want to copy) and the destination drive (which is the new SSD). After that, you just start the clone and it does a bit-for-bit clone of the source drive. When it completes, just shut down your computer and swap the drives.

User questions & answers

Question: I want to add this as a 2nd drive. Does it come with cables
Answer: I routinely use it with my S9. No additional hardware needed. Samsung designed it to work well with Samsung devices.
Question: Does it comes with cloning the old drive software like samsung evo
Answer: Yes. You might need to Google how to use an external drive, but the read/write speeds on this are exceptional (1GB/s), and the USB-C to USB-C cable it comes with is top-notch (as is the USB-C to USB-A cable). Obviously, you're going to want to be vary careful not to move the cables when in-use.
Question: Besides the price point, what is the difference between this and the samsung 1tb
Answer: Yes, you should be able to use this as an external drive for the PS5 and get full speed on it as long as you plug it into one of the USB 3.2 ports. However, you will still not be able to play PS5 games off of it. You can play PS4 games off of it with improved load times. Per Daniel Bastian's answer regarding the Xbox Series X. You can use the T7 on Series X, but you will not get the full speed. Series X uses USB 3.1 gen 1 ports, which are slower than this SSD. For Series X, you would be better off buying the T5 SSD.
Question: Never heard of this brand are their products Reliable? Do they have good customer service and return policies
Answer: Reformatting this external SSD will not do anything to its cache. In any case, the cache is used only during read/write operations, you can’t directly address it as a user and don’t have to think about it at all. You can reformat in APFS for best Mac performance or use any other scheme you need, including multiple partitions each formatted differently.
