14 best western digital hdd media players

Western Digital (WD) HDD Media Players, also known as WD Media Players, were a series of multimedia devices produced by Western Digital. These devices were designed to provide an easy way to play media files stored on external hard drives or other storage devices on your TV or home theater system. Here are some key features and information about Western Digital HDD Media Players:

  1. Media Playback: WD Media Players supported a wide range of media formats, including video, audio, and image files. They allowed users to play movies, music, and view photos directly on their TV screens.

  2. HDMI Output: Most WD Media Players were equipped with HDMI ports for high-definition video and audio output. This made it easy to connect them to modern HDTVs and AV receivers.

  3. USB Ports: These media players typically featured USB ports to connect external hard drives, USB flash drives, or other storage devices. Users could simply plug in their storage device, and the media player would recognize and play the content.

  4. Network Connectivity: Some models offered network connectivity options, such as Ethernet ports or built-in Wi-Fi.This allowed users to stream media content from networked devices or online sources like Netflix and YouTube.

  5. Remote Control: WD Media Players came with remote controls, making it convenient to navigate and control media playback from the comfort of your couch.

  6. User Interface: They had user-friendly interfaces that made it easy to browse and select media files. The interface often included options for creating playlists and organizing content.

  7. Subtitle Support: Many models supported subtitle files, making it possible to watch movies and TV shows with subtitles.

  8. Dolby Digital and DTS Audio: These media players often supported popular audio formats like Dolby Digital and DTS, providing a high-quality audio experience when connected to a compatible audio system.

  9. Firmware Updates: Western Digital periodically released firmware updates to improve device performance and add new features. Users were encouraged to keep their media players updated.

  10. Discontinued: It's worth noting that as of my last knowledge update in January 2022, Western Digital had discontinued its line of HDD Media Players. The company shifted its focus to other storage products, including external hard drives and network-attached storage (NAS) devices.

Please keep in mind that the information provided here is based on my last knowledge update, and the status or availability of Western Digital products may have changed since then. If you are interested in purchasing or using a Western Digital media player, we recommend checking the official Western Digital website or contacting their customer support for the most up-to-date information and product availability.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it play ISO fully with DVD menus? I know some of them can read ISO files, but you lose the DVD menu options and special features
Answer: Yes, this will play movies from an ext hard drive.
Question: Has cinavia infected the firmware on this yet
Answer: Yes sorta. Netflix is based on your location so if your outside of the US you won't get US content. I've used mine in both Canada and the US and you will get the content based on your location. To get US content outside the country you need to use a US Proxy service.
Question: I guess ive been sleeping under a rock. but, what does this box do
Answer: Hi One Builder, I have had every generation of these WD units and I have not seen that option you are asking about. I know exactly what you meen. If you had a ripped standard dvd in a folder with a VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folder the machine will automatically cycle through the 0.99GB .VOB movie files in order without any pause. You can do some other little tweaks like when browsing the video movie files, the unit gets the case artwork and movie plot, cast and when you highlight a film the background will randomly transition through very High Quality Wallpapers for that film but the cast names you can add your name,etc.. Once the WDTV unit writes a few folders on any inserted usb storage you can remove the storage device and take a look at the factory written folders in the root of your device from a computer or even an android tablet or smartphone with OTG USB port capabilities, if you know LINUX OS you can make things happen with some notepad code. There are a couple forums with custom launchers, so replace the factory firmware, I only see what you are looking to do being added as a feature with a launcher by a code writing individual or you may get lucky and request this add-on in the forums and someone writes new code and releases a new firmware update with the feature. I Like Your Idea Though.
Question: Will this play a movie from an ext USB hard drive via USB cable? The movies I have are on there. My DVR only works with thumbdrives
Answer: Just wanted to put my two cents in too! I just received mine last night - I have a 3 TB hard drive connected to it - I got it because not all tvs (or game systems) play all the different movie formats - this thing plays them all - I am VERY IMPRESSED, and based on the fact of seeing two USB ports I'm positive I can hook up another hard drive (the cartoon one for the kids). There wasn't any lag works perfect. If they ever add more options to the home menu that would be a bonus!

Question: Does this device playback any type of digital video or audio format
Answer: Adapter Model # WA-18G12U, Output 12V ---1.5Ahttp://www.amazon.com/Asian-Power-Devices-WA-18G12U-External/dp/B0
Question: Are the rca output or inputs
Answer: The problem I found with this is that most TVs only have 2T memory,,, and regardless how big your ext HD is,, the TV will crash after reaching it's 2T limit. So your max ext HD memory has to be 2T.... Box works fine though
Question: I lost AC adapter, what voltage can I use
Answer: You can press the "OSD" button to set the time when it plays the photos.
Question: will it play from Seagate 4TB backup plus ext hd
Answer: No, it is not necessary, you can get audio from HDMI also. The optical port is an option for you to connect to other devices without HDMI port.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I download kodi on those device
Answer: I am pretty sure that the WD player I have plays Avi files. WMV files didn't play though. Do a search for a program that converts mp4, mpeg, wmv, etc to avi or a file that you know the WD plays. The conversion programs are generally free. Good luck.
Question: I bought this device 8 or 9 years ago for U$ 80 (or less)... Why is this obsolete device so expensive now
Answer: It plays everything exactly like a DVD. I have all the DVD menu and bonus features of my movies from the portable hard drive. I asked the same thing before I got it.
Question: This does not need wifi, does it? i just want to play videos from my 8 tb sea gate external drive through hdmi, best buy website mentioned this device
Answer: WDTV won't support Cinavia EVER cause it does not need a BD license.
Question: Just got this! A note on top from seller said it won't play avi files. I bought it because it supposedly played everything. Is a workaround
Answer: I guess I was sleeping under the rock next to you cause I just heard of this device last week when my tech guy on my job requested my workplace get this for a TV we wanted mounted. Never heard of this item before. Also, i am a gadget queen and collect pretty much useful gadgets so I wasted no time to purchase this for home, even though it wasn't on my wish list. Have not received it yet, but by the readings, it sounds like it would do pretty much the same thing as a wifi blu ray player with the exception of having the drive for the DVD. It will play movies, movie, photos, etc from the USB drive and the capability to stream specific internet applications. Sounds like an entertaining and useful device that I will use once I receive it.I have now received this item and use it everyday. I use it to play movies from my external hard drives and it plays those movies in which my Blu ray player even couldn't read. I like it much better than my Blu ray player. It has a gorgeous background versus my Blu ray which has a very simple background display. I do mot play DVDs anymore since my movies are stored. But we device is so cute and not to mention all the streaming you can do with the built in apps. In conclusion, I purchased a used one cause I always do that since the used and refurbished items works just as good and at half the price of new items.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this model support Netflix account profiles
Answer: the WD TV Media player has a usb access on the side which you can connect your hard to or you can access media on your computer through the wifi network. I have windows seven and it is not user friendly, although I got it to work it takes a while to set and not worth the head ache. So I just transfer movies on to my portable hardrive then plug it into the WD player. hope that helps. Menu is very slow though but it works.
Question: I want to have my 2TB external hard drive hooked up into my computer in my office, my understanding is that this can access my hard drive and play the movies that are on there, is that correct and if so how
Answer: No, I don't believe you can.
Question: will this unit let me loop a video continuously? (to be used as a lobby display
Answer: Because it's a good product. Quality stuff cost $$
Question: must you be connected to internet/wifi to watch owned movies stored on a WD hard drive
Answer: No wifi necessary, I use this as a standalone media player. I use an external hard drive that has its own power supply. Not sure if this device can power an external hard drive without a separate power supply.

User questions & answers

Question: mkv
Answer: Yes you can do this. You will need to use a media server in order to do this. Microsoft has one that is built in to most Operating Systems if you have windows Vista, or 7 you can use Windows Media Player and there are setting in there that allow you to setup a media server. You would then just choose a directory (aka your 2TB drive) to share and when you use the WD Play you go in to the storage app and chose the media server you setup and all the files will be on there. Now personally I have found Plex to be better and easier Media Server to use so I would recommend downloading Plex Media Server. (It is free)You do the same thing add the files and then the Plex Server will show up on your WD Box under the Storage App.
Question: How big is the external hard drive mine is 4tb will it work
Answer: Yes it does. Go to Video Playback Options -> Play Mode -> there are Shuffle and Repeat all and Repeat One options available. Here is the link to the manual of the device. www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705073.pdf Go to page 52 you will find the details related to it.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I plug this in as an external hdd enclosure with usb 3.0 capabilites and have it function on an xbox one
Answer: Yes, the only requirement on the Xbox One side is that the connection be USB 3.0 and the drive be a minimum of 500 Gb. Other than that purchase a reliable enclosure kit that also supplies power and uses the SATA connection already on the HDD.
Question: On the picture it shows the hard drive's insides, do I need a special enclosure besides me computer case for this
Answer: If your are installing in a Windows PC, that is a new-ish computer (probably any that came with vista and many that came with XP) it will support Serial ATA hard drives, open abbreviated to SATA drives. You should look up the specs on your computer to insure compatibility. This hard drive is a SATA drive so it will install and replace your other computer. I purchased this drive, and also bought an external case. This would allow this internal hard drive to work as an external drive. It plugs into an external power supply and connects to the computer with a USB cable. The external case I purchased here on amazon is a: Sabrent USB 3.0 To 3.5-Inch Sata Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Black Case.I was installing Windows 7 on my PC. I stalled the WD 1 TB drive in the PC, installed the Windows 7 software, then installed my older smaller drive in the external case.
Question: Is this the retail version (boxed) or is it an OEM bulk drive
Answer: What do you think you get for $86/4TB? It's OEM without a warranty. If you want that spend $20 more for 2 years with the retail version. For my use I don't need a warranty anyway, odds are it will fail decades from now since I use these as storage mostly sitting unpowered on a shelf 95% of the time (with LTO backups just in case I'm unlucky). The 4 in my PC are the same drives in an 8TB raid1, and they have been spinning 24-7 for 3 years now with no HDD replacement needed.
Question: Which 1 TB hard disk you recomend between the Western Digital Blue WD10EZEX or the Seagate Barracuda ST
Answer: I have bought and used WD and Seagate hard drives. I have never had an internal WD hard drive fail on me yet, but I have had one of their older Elements external hard drives fail on me. As for Seagate, I purchased an ST2000DM001 (which is the 2tb version) several months ago that has now failed. I lost everything and got a clicking sound, as if it were stuck. Only lasted 5 months. In comparison I have had my 1st WD blue WD10EZEX for more than two years now and I have not had a failure at all. It's extremely reliable, so much so I decided to replace the Seagate one with a another one of the WD10EZEX's. I have 4 hard drives in my computer 1 SSD (For operating system), 2 WD Blues 1tb and an older Seagate one from an older computer (a dell dimension) with about 250gigs of capacity. I'm planning on getting another blue or black 1 tb to replace it later. I definitely would recommend the blues. It's not that expensive, it's reliable and comes with a decent warranty. I would not recommend Seagate. Just can't trust it. No matter what hard drives should last past the warranty, not even a year and it fails? What kind of QC are they having at Seagate?

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with the power adapter
Answer: Yes ma'am that is exactly why I bought this cable to transfer from hard drive to hard drive (20gb to 150gb) for the same Xbox 360. this is exactly what you are looking for :) merry Christmas
Question: Is this compatabible with the ps
Answer: Sure, you have to connect the new drive to the Xbox 360, then you turn on the console, and the assitant appears after login, then the assistant itself guides you in this operation is very easy. One thing the process erases the content of the old disk.
Question: Will this work with a system that only has USB2.0 ports
Answer: usualy the PG read out should be between 100ms and 500ms. the PG being 70 means that the power good signal is being broadcast every 70ms if all the voltages are good the PSU should in theory still be suitable for use. the PG delay tells the computer that the power supply is still functioning properly at certain intervals and helps the emergency shutoff circuitry that is built in to motherboards to know when the powersupply has gone bad.
Question: which one is better? elements 8tb or my book 8tb
Answer: In other words, it does NOT support testing Watts.

User questions & answers

Question: Would this be a good choice for a replacement internal drive on a hr-24 directv dvr? any recommendations
Answer: Yes
Question: What would be the primary reasons for buying this one over the 5400rpm drive
Answer: I guess it depends on amazon's stock. Mine were manufactured a month before I received them. If you order now I'm confident you get 2020 drives.
Question: What is the difference between 3tb purple wd30purz and wd30purz, very confusing
Answer: The drives I purchased were manufactured about a month before I received them. I believe these drives are still manufactured in the same factories which belonged to Hitachi before they were bought out by WD. But I don't know whether the particular drive you are looking at was on stock at Amazon or the supplier for longer than that. However, I would suggest you don't need to worry about the manufacturing date, as the warranty will start on purchase date. Let me tell you, these are the best and most reliable drives you can buy. I have Ultrastars running in my servers since over 10 years (yes, never replaced), none of those ever failed me.
Question: can it replace older hhd in nightowl dvr
Answer: Hi, The warranty is 5 Year Manufacture Warranty which can be claimed by going on WD.com under warranty claim. If you purchase from us Serverpartdeals and you have a failure we would be happy to assist you in getting a quick replacement. As a seller of these drives, we do not see failure rates to be alarming. More often with Enterprise Drives you have the quality to last you past 5 years of use. Shipping is also very important to make sure there is no damage to your drives, hence we use suspended HDD boxes custom made for these drives do avoid failure and intern warranty claims.
